Key Information

Day 1

Become a musher

Holmen Husky Lodge exterior, Norway. Photo: Host/Holmen Husky Lodge

Dog Sledding

1hr · 10km

Head to a husky lodge near the fjord-side city of Alta, known for its views of the Northern Lights. Have fun with the puppies and then climb into a thermal suit and learn how to handle a dogsled before riding it through the evening air. Take a hot shower and sit down for a delicious dinner in a beautiful, renovated barn. If you’re feeling brave, take a dip in the outdoor jacuzzi and warm up in the sauna before settling into your cosy lavvo (tipi-style tent) for the night. Watch the stars through the floor-to-ceiling window and if you’re lucky, get a glimpse of the aurora.

Day 2

Ride to a mountain cabin

Dog Sledding

3hrs · 30km

Load up the dogs and drive your pack onto the Finnmark Plateau – 22,000 square kilometres of untouched wilderness. Stop for lunch along the trail and then ride to a traditional mountain cabin. Tend to your pack, eat some dinner and then relax in the sauna. Keep a close eye on the sky, as the aurora might appear above you at any moment.

Day 3

Back to base camp

Dog Sledding

3hrs · 30km

Rise early, prepare your dogs and ride out of the wilderness, back to the husky lodge. Celebrate with a drink and another plunge in the outdoor hot tub, before spending a last night under the stars and a last search for the northern lights.

Day 4

Head for home

Enjoy the view from your window, followed by breakfast in the lodge before heading back to the airport or Alta city centre and home.

What is the food like?

Holmen Husky Lodge, Norway. Photo: Host/Holmen Husky Lodge

The Husky Lodge serves a variety of food, much of it made from local ingredients, including moose, reindeer and fish. Most dietary requirements, including vegetarian and vegan, can be catered for – just let your host know in advance.

What is the accommodation like?

Husky Lodge

You'll stay in a twin-share lavvo (a traditional Sami tent) with a wood-burning stove and heated blankets to keep you warm. Best of all, one section of the wall has been replaced with a floor-to-ceiling window that lets you look out into the night sky. The lodge also has a restaurant, bar, outdoor jacuzzi and sauna. There are no shower or toilet facilities in the lavvo itself but there are modern toilet and shower facilities just a few meters away.

The Finnmark Plateau

You'll stay in remote mountain cabins in the wilderness. These are basic and feature shared dorms and gorgeous views. There are no showers but there is a sauna.

Upgrades

If you are travelling as a pair then you can request an upgrade to the two-person luxurious Arctic Dome for Day 1 and Day 3 of your trip. The Dome comes equipped with its own private sauna and bathroom facilities. It also has a panoramic view of a nearby field and surrounding forest, as well as a skylight that covers most of the ceiling. There is only one Arctic Dome available so you'll have to be quick as they are very popular! See optional extras for prices.

Practically perfect. From the pick

Practically perfect. From the pick up to the drop off I felt we were well taken care of. There were 12 guests and 2 guides. Plus the owner did a bit of the driving around. The whats app group did help in the beginning for logistics, and was very useful throughout the trip for tipps and photosharing. We had a varied group in age and composition. from the mid 20s to late 50s. We had 4 couples and 4 singles. Americans, Danish, Brits. Well mixed, and helpful people & fun to be with. Our guides, Nick and Rasmus were excellent. Both Swedish, both experts with huskies and being outdoor guides. They were exceptional in their behaviour, their way to kick start the conversation, and keep the group happy. Always stressing that many things (like feeding the dogs) are really optional. You felt in safe hands. The lodge and equipment itself were first class. Suits, goggles, shoes, sleds, huskies, accommodation, communal area. All brand new, or super well maintained. Akin to a wonderful mountain chalet or hotel. Food was plenty, well cooked, local, and highly appreciated by the group. We tried everything from reindeer, to deer tongue to whale and Norwegian waffles (because they are heart shaped...) and famous Norwegian caramelised cheese. The pacing was relaxed, some of us could have gone on longer on each day. Starting off with getting onto the sleds straight away is great. We came off the airport, changed into pro gear and off we went. Dogs were already mounted on the lines. First day we practiced 5k, so it was important to get used to it. Made us hungry for dinner, and the guides used the time well to explain what we needed to pack for the next couple of days. The trail itself was great, it was in huskey terms super easy, still meant 3-4 hours on the sled. The overnighter in the hut was excellent, the lady there was so kind, did everything for us and served Arctic shark. That night the guides lit a fire and we saw the best Northern lights. We saw some the night before, but on track they were special. You cannot legislate for that, so it's I am sure just luck. Following day getting up was easy. Ride back was equally awesome. Landscapes, snow, sun was shining, no more than -15 degrees. Shades out, shout at Huskeys by name and off we go.

Danielle R.(April 2024)
Amazing tour, every single detail was perfection.

This tour lived up to every high expectation I had and more. The guides made sure all of our questions were answered and I felt safe and tended to. At the same time, they were funny, engaging and it was like hanging out with friends. They went above and beyond at every moment (they even got the Northern Lights to come out each night for us ;) ). The food was exceptional- as a vegetarian, I had concerns, but the food was plentiful and delicious. The accommodations were much nicer than expected and hot water was plentiful. I have so many happy memories from this tour. Most of the time, once I've done something, I cross it off my list and move on to the next adventure, but I can definitely see myself doing this tour again, and I've definitely made adventure friends for life.

Would do again

This was one of the best experiences I have been on! When we arrived the facilities were amazing, these stunning cozy tipi’s where you can see the wilderness. The guides were incredibly helpful and patient in teaching us and answering all our questions. Then there was the dogs and sledding! Absolutely fantastic!

Jessica M.(April 2024)
Everything I'd hoped for and more.

Incredible few days in Alta, the hosts were friendly, informative and accommodating, giving everyone chance to get involved. Accommodation was cosy, comfortable and warm (the mountain cabin does have showers). The dogs are so friendly, well looked after, and love cuddles. Incredible scenery, we got to see the northern lights. Couldn't recommend it more.

Holmen Husky Lodge

What a lovely 4 days of peace and relaxation. From the moment we arrived to the afternoon of leaving we have enjoyed ourselves. Learning to sled and mush is an awesome experience. The overnight sled journey was a mix. Day 1 headwinds, freezing winds, and tough uphills, contrasted to clear blue skies and downhill runs on the return leg. The highlight was the Northern Light show, along with the knowledge you had a sauna, jacuzzi and Nordic Ice Bath to dip into on return. The food is all locally made and prepared. Cod stew, Reindeer Stew, fresh deserts, coffee and tea always available. The facilities are second to none, and every member of staff (including the dogs) are very welcoming.

Go on this trip!

This was one of the best trips of my life! Our guides, Niklaus & Rasmus were brilliant, they’re experts at what they do, funny, friendly and put all of us at ease. I loved learning how to work with the dogs, the accommodation was great, and sledding the plateau & the campfire with the northern lights were a dream come true. My group got so lucky with the weather and the aurora and I was genuinely sad to leave the trip & my dogs when it was over. Highly recommend.

Rob G.(April 2024)
Another great experience with the MBA team.

This was our 2nd MBA holiday and they just keep getting better. From the pre-start WhatsApp group chatter, Nick and Rasmus were great hosts and guides, taking the time to make sure everyone was informed and happy with everything we needed to make the husky sledding safe and enjoyable. The tipi accommodation at Holmen Husky lodge was great, and watching the sunset in the hot tub was a great way to meet new friends. Getting to know your own husky team and how to harness them before setting off into the most amazing wilderness of clear blue skies and sun kissed virgin snow is a memory that will last forever. Then sitting around a camp fire watching the northern lights whilst cuddling a Husky is something most of us don’t do every day. I can thoroughly recommend this trip if your bucket list includes any of the above experiences as you won’t be disappointed.

Johanna M.(April 2024)
Probably one of the best

Probably one of the best adventures / holidays I’ve ever had.

The group dynamic was great, the guides were super helpful, patient and lovely.

The rain-deer stew and whale filet was an experience and amazing. Thank you team Much Better Adventures

Our favourite trip!

This is our 5th MBA trip and our favourite! We love Dogs and this trip is all about Dogs! The lodge is set in a lovely location in Alta and your accommodation is right night to the Dog yard! Looking out at the wonderful snowy Forrest from the Lavoo listening to the dogs howling is a fantastic experience! The staff at Holmen Husky, couldn’t do enough for us and really let us get involved with the dogs, from harnessing them, to putting there booties on and re-clamping there collars when one or two may have made a break for it! The dogs loved their job and so did the staff! We were gutted to leave, could have stayed in that dog yard all year!

Neil M.(February 2024)
This was an excellent husky

This was an excellent husky adventure. We stayed in the wonderful dome with its own sauna and shower and window out to the world. Everything is top quality including the clothing and the dog sledding was pure joy. Our team leader Nicklaus deserves a special mention. The calmest, nicest and most able person you could hope to meet.We will truly never forget this experience and in particular the incredible dogs.

Daniel B.(February 2024)
Great fun in the Arctic!

A great trip for getting a taste of this part of Norway, and also to experience it in great company - enthusiastic dogs, knowledgeable and helpful guides (Romain & Nik) and a good bunch of fellow travellers. Right from the start we were straight out on the sleds, making the most of our short time at Holmen, before setting out on a longer excursion for Days 2&3. Accommodation was excellent, as was the food (including unexpected treats such as homemade waffles and hot chocolate). We were encouraged to get stuck in - handling the dogs before & after the runs, as well as helping with feeding, and the dogs were more than happy for us to join in. The supplied equipment was of very good quality, and at no point did I feel we were not prepared for the conditions. The sauna/ice bath/jacuzzi experience is not to be missed. The added bonus was a brief display of the Northern Lights, which is always a matter of luck.

Katie W.(February 2024)
Such a fantastic trip, I’m tempted to book again!

What a phenomenal trip. Perfect in every way! The accommodation & food were fantastic, the jacuzzi sublime & the ice plunge, erm, invigorating. The stars of the show, the dogs, are truly beautiful. So affectionate, & so eager to run. I could happily have taken every one of them home! Wild weather on the plateau forced a change of plan, but Niklas & Andre took everything in their stride, guiding us through pristine forests & across sparkling snow covered rivers. As the Northern Lights danced & the huskies howled, I felt like the luckiest person on Earth. AMAZING place, AMAZING people, AMAZING dogs! I could’ve stayed forever!

Rachel N.(February 2024)
Incredible few days!!

I would recommend this trip to absolutely anyone. From the moment we arrived at the lodge, the hosts were all friendly and helpful, the dogs were playful and adorable and the scenery was stunning! The teepees at the lodge are amazing- very cosy! And the mountain cabin was so much better than I was expecting from the description! The food was incredible the whole trip. This really was a trip that dreams are made of and I am already planning to come back next year!

Jane H.(February 2024)
Incredible experience!

Incredible trip. And wonderful guides. Even though the weather changed our plans it was a magical time. Northern lights, spectacular location, amazing food and just incredible people and dogs. Thanks so much to the team at Holmen Husky Lodge (including the beautiful dogs!) for ensuring our stay was more than I'd hoped for. Good luck for the race!

Richard H.(February 2024)
Absolutely amazing experience sledding in

Absolutely amazing experience sledding in the Arctic Circle, getting to interact with the dogs and drive your own sled made it even more incredible. The accommodation and food were first class, and the experience was made even better by the incredible guides.

Claire R.(February 2024)
Hands down the best tour

Hands down the best tour I've been on!! Huge thanks to Niklas, Rasmus and the whole Holmen crew for a fantastic weekend. Well organised from start to finish, our guides were so informative and patient. The dogs were well cared for, so keen to run and loved a fuss. A highlight of the trip being how involved we were with our pack and getting to know the dogs personalities. The sledding was fantastic and despite the cold temperatures the kit kept us warm. Infact it would have been great to have another day's sled. The accomodation was amazing and the mountain lodge not as basic as led to believe. The food was also a highlight, local produce and the world famous fish sauce really lived up to the bill! I really can't recommend this trip highly enough

Cerreta G.(February 2024)
Fantastic experience

We had a GREAT time! Accomodation was the best we could expect in these conditions, landscape is superlative, hosts and guides were professional.. an patient! But most of all I liked the dogs, all of them, and we learned a lot. Suggested for lovers of adventure, good company... and low temperatures.

Polly M.(February 2024)
Beautiful Husky Arctic Adventure

Beautiful, super fun adventure with cute huskies. The dogs were so lovely, wanting cuddles and to be friendly, and were clearly very happy and had great relationships with everyone. They love to run. And get a reward hug! We got to help feed and harness and then reward with play time at the end. We had some time before our afternoon flight and they let s spend the morning at the lodge relaxing and more dog time. I wanted to take Torres home! The sledding was incredible. Such beautiful scenery and a good length (aways want to do a little more!). The kits was great, you don't need to bring much. I did appreciate dmy hand warmers and electric socks, but the suit kept my body warm- and I am always cold. The organisation from Holmen, the food and accommodation (far less simple than described!), our guides Romain and Niklas and other travellers were all perfect too.

Olivia T.(February 2024)
Out of this world

My first MBA trip and wow - what an experience. Beautiful scenery, the best dogs in the land and the local company Holmen Huskies had thought of every little thing! Hot chocolate and waffles after getting in from a cold day sledding, electric blankets in the beds, and even our own team sheet of dogs so we could learn their names. I absolutely loved this trip and highly recommend.

Abhishek S.(February 2024)
Sign up for this trip today!

Simply amazing! Nick and Oda were excellent guides and all of us had a great time. And we even saw the lights! Food, huskies, snow, sleds, sauna, cozy lodge, Northern Lights… what more can you ask for!

Paulina B.(February 2024)
Thank you Niklas, Rasmus, Eric,

Thank you Niklas, Rasmus, Eric, Joanna, Matilda, Jo, and all the staff at Holmen Husky for going over and beyond to ensure we had a fabulous time. The trip exceeded my expectations, it was very well organized, and the service was excellent. It was an honour to learn how to mush and spend a weekend in the Finnmark.

Federico F.(February 2024)
Amazing experience with the dogs, great food and wonderful location. An unforgettable weekend!

What a great weekend it was. Thank you to Niklas, Rasmus and the team for organising such an amazing expedition. The location was stunning, the dogs were brilliant, the food is amazing, and the team was always there to make sure we had the best experience possible. Definitely recommend going on one of their adventures, will be coming back here soon!

Maira V.(February 2024)
This trip is a wonderful

This trip is a wonderful experience that I would recommend to all dog lovers and outdoor adventurers. Be aware that the weather can be unpredictable, we had -25 C and a stormy first day, but the suits keep you warm and guides ensure you are safe. My only wish is that the trips were longer, as you are definitely left wanting more.

Jeremy G.(February 2024)
Fantastic Experience!

Everything from the accommodations to the dogs themselves were amazing. The guides and staff were very friendly and made sure each and every one of the group was taken care of when needed. The dogsledding was fantastic, but the hidden gem was the camaraderie formed with the rest of the group. Fantastic experience for solo travelers! Definitely don’t underestimate the cold and level of physical fitness required. The northern lights are kind of luck of the draw. I’d say there’s a decent chance of seeing them at night when the sky is clear, but you’ll have to get really lucky to see them vibrantly pop with color. Highly recommend and would definitely come again

elizabeth c.(January 2024)
Happiness is a pack of huskies

such an incredible time. it was a slickly organised and the experience was hard to describe. Its hard work harnessing up those huskies so be prepared and I wasn't keen at being at the back of the pack so ask to be up front if you are unsure. accommodation etc was also so lovely. Snow and landscape incredible . I will be back !

Benjamin H.(January 2024)
Just might have to come back

I absolutely loved this trip. I never know how amazing things would be. I loved the food, the people, the views! Romain and Nick were amazing. The weather was cold but once you get past that, the scenery was absolutely sensational. The Husky Holman lodge provides everything you need on their kit. I recommend packing light and enjoy how amazing it all was

Tong Q.(January 2024)
Amazing arctic adventure!

I loved this trip. It was fun, challenging, rewarding and full of warmth despite the -30 degrees temperature. The guides very friendly and looked after us well, and the group was just great - a mix of solo travellers and couples, across a wide range of ages and backgrounds. It was a wonderful chance to meet and bond with people you wouldn't normally come across. We sled across the most beautiful mountain plateaus, the moon in the pink sky over pristine tundras of snow - a completely breathtaking sight. We were also lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the aurora the second night up in the mountain cabin. Although it's quite a short trip, it felt completely packed and full of the best experiences, so if you're thinking of booking, just do it!

Victoria C.(January 2024)
Husky Heaven

A truly magical few days at Holmen huskies. All the stress of getting to Alta with cancelled flights and missed connections were all forgotten on arrival at the lodge. We were greated by hugely hospitable staff and the most cuddly huskies. I was very impressed at how accommodating the staff were to those that arrived late to the trip, and every effort was made to insure that all guests had the most fulfilling experience. Though my trip was slightly shorter than planned, I did not feel I missed out in the slightest. The days are action packed and hands on, and you really do become a musher for a few days. You get involved with kitting up and feeding the dogs, driving the sledges, and there are plenty of time for cuddles too. Accommodation and food are top notch and feels like luxury with sauna and jacuzzi! The scenery, company and adventure on this trip made it worth every penny, I cannot recommend this trip enough. Thank you Holmen huskies!

Claire P.(January 2024)
Dreams can come true!

We had the best time ever! We had such fun. Laughter is the best medicine, having flipped the sled within 15 minutes and falling down a ravine, Nick (Thor) had to come and save me. We obviously set the precedent because 4 sleds then followed. Several more incidents ensued which resulted stories being regailed and many giggles around the fire with hot chocolate following a long day out on the sleds. Whilst settling down for local cuisine for dinner lovingly prepared at the lodge we were lucky enough to experience a few glimpses of the Northern lights. The whole experience of getting the dogs ready, fully immersed us in the experience. Our guides, Romain and Nickholas were amazing, kind and helpful. The team kept us fed and comfortable. We stayed in the igloo and can't recommend it enough. By the end of day 2, a very tired set of guests take rest in the sauna and jacuzzi. What a lovely way to end the day chatting with new (hopefully) lifelong friends about the beautiful scenery we had seen including a sunrise (Romain was very excited about that). This trip has made some everlasting memories for us. A huge thank you to the Holmen Husky team and Much better adventures for making our dreams come true.

Ann(June 2023)

Husky Sled and Northern Lights Expedition was a splendid adventure. We had planned to go in 2020, but, because of COVID, it was 2023 when we actually went. Much Better Adventures kept us booked year after year as we waited for restrictions to lift. The Arctic Dome suite was amazing with a view of the sky from our bed and a private bath! Phil and Trina were the best guides and great company. We loved the other guests on the trip, as well! We highly recommend this trip!

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 50kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000miles/1609km would be approx. 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person if there was 2 of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight London - New York would be approx. 1,619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approx. 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

Once your guide has given you sufficient instruction, you'll drive for around 5-6 hours per day, with two people per sled. You will also learn to take care of your pack by putting on their harnesses, feeding them and most importantly, keeping them motivated.

Unfortunately, the Northern Lights are notoriously unpredictable so it's impossible to say for certain whether you will see them as the chances are highly dependent on weather and visibility, with clear skies needed to view them properly. However, this trip will increase your chances as you will be staying in a remote location, far from any light pollution and in a tipi bungalow where you can watch the sky all night if you wish.

No previous dog-sledding experience is needed, just a reasonable level of fitness to handle the sled. Your host will ensure that you learn all the skills you need throughout the trip.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

The cold season in Alta lasts for over four months, from mid-November to mid-March, with temperatures reaching lows of -10°C, however, you can expect an average temperature of 0°C

Absolutely. Our host uses a local family outfit called Tristi & Trina who have a lot of experience looking after the dogs and running a small scale sledding business in the local area. The dog's welfare has been and always will be their top priority. The breed of dog they work with is a polar type of dog called the Alaskan Husky. They are born outside, and are happy to live outside all their life - but of course, they are provided with insulated huts full of warm straw and hay to sleep and retreat into.

As this breed was bred to run, they need to have a lot of activity to stay happy and healthy. This is why your host ensures that every dog has enough possibility to move every day, depending on the dog's individual age and state of health. Young dogs, veterans or disabled dogs have reduced running. They will do a run on 5-20km running 4 to 5 days a week, with 2-3 days of rest. Normal dogs can run up to 40-50 km per day, depending on the day and conditions.

To make sure that every dog needs the care and attention they need, our hosts have a daily staff of dedicated employees tending to them. Every morning and afternoon they are trained in and provide the medical care of the dogs. They also work closely with local veterinaries in Alta, who take over where their medical expertise comes to an end.

Any excess luggage can be safely left at the Husky Lodge at the start of your trip.

We also strongly recommend it includes cancellation and curtailment insurance, should you be unable to join your trip for specific reasons such as illness.

We fully endorse Campbell Irvine as their insurance offers all of the above, so get in touch with them or call on 020 7938 1734 to get your insurance sorted. We suggest that you book travel insurance as soon as you book your adventure, just to cover you for any last-minute life changes. We know you’re an active lot and injuries do happen!

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates on a daily basis so this does mean that prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy (18+) as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. Children can be accommodated on some private departures.

You're always in good company on one of our adventures.

Our trips are typically made up of a mixture of solo travellers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.

Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.

It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.

Don't just take our word for it:

  • 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
  • 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
  • 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends
