What to Expect

Day 1: Snow Shoeing and Aurora Camping

In the evening, your guide will meet you in Tromsø and take you on your first night to the Tromsø Wilderness Camp.

Once you reach the camp, your guide will kit you out with snowshoes, before taking you out into the Arctic tundra.

As you snowshoe through the region, you will see spectacular views of the mountains surrounding Tromsø and towards the Balsfjord and Malangen peninsula.

When you return, sit back and relax by the fire in the Wilderness Camp while you enjoy a traditional Norwegian meal made of local stockfish to warm you up.

When you are ready you go to sleep, you can get comfortable in the big Sami tents, equipped with sleeping bags, reindeer hides and a wood-burning stove.

Make sure you take a look at the sky before you go to sleep, as you might even be lucky enough to stop the elusive Aurora.

2,5 hours snowshoeing, evening around the campfire

Day 2: Dog Sledding with Alaskan Huskies

After a delicious breakfast, your guide will take you to meet the dogs!

Get up close and personal with the 300 puppies and dogs before you take a dogsled out with the professional mushers. There will be guides on a 2:1 basis for the dog sledding, but if you’d like to drive the sled yourself, just let them know in advance.

You will ride into the heart of Tromsø Villmarkssenter with your four-legged friend, before stopping off for a traditional Sami meal called “Bidos” a delicious reindeer stew, that will be served around the fire.

Head back to the Tromsø after lunch, as you bid your furry friends farewell!

Accommodation is in a traditional communal Sami tent. The tent is a peaked wooden structure, nicely heated by a wood-burning stove, with room to sleep 10-12 people. Sleeping bags and reindeer hides are provided to keep you extra warm. Toilets are in an adjacent building. A private tent that sleeps up to 4 people can be arranged at additional cost. Yes! On this trip, you’ll be able to meet over 300 dogs, of which many are puppies.

Throughout the winter season, there will be puppies born the previous summer which will be 6 months old, whereas the newest additions will appear from around February onwards.

No, unfortunately, the Northern Lights are notoriously unpredictable so it is impossible to say that you will definitely see them. The chances are highly dependent on the weather and visibility, as you will need clear skies to view them properly.

However, this trip will definitely increase your chances to see them as you will be in a remote location, away from light pollution.

The best time to do this trip and to see the Northern lights is between mid-December and February/early March, known as the “Polar Night”. This is when nights are longest and days shortest, giving you the very best chances to witness the unforgettable Aurora Borealis.

As this is an active tour, you will need a moderate level of fitness. However, you can always relax as a passenger. You do not need any previous experience in dog sledding.

Winter temperatures in Norway are cold, but due to the warm Gulf Stream current it’s much more pleasant than other countries at the same latitude. Daytime temperatures average just below freezing, but can drop to -20 °C, even when it’s sunny out.

The weather in the Arctic is variable and can change very quickly but in general, you can expect snow and long polar nights.

If weather conditions do not allow dog-sledding to take place you will be offered a number of alternative activity options including whale watching and husky-hiking. In the event of a change of activity, you will receive a part-refund.

Your food on this trip will be Traditional Sami cuisine. This is based on a diet of fish, reindeer and berries and includes such foods as Bidos, Bacaloa, bread, cloudberry jam and salted fish.

Coffee and cake will also be provided.

This trip is designed to be a 1-night-only overnight experience. Longer trips are possible, but will require you to book a private 4-person tent for an additional £100 per night. Extra activities are available on request, but are subject to availability.

This trip will run with a minimum of 4 people and a maximum of 10.

Please note, this trip may be rearranged or cancelled if fewer than 4 people are booked.
