The Durmitor is a spectacular limestone massif in North-Western Montenegro, among the Dinaric Alps. The area is famous for its 18 glacial lakes, commonly referred to as the “Eyes of the Mountain” as well as its abundance of wildlife, including brown bears, grey wolves and golden eagles. The lower slopes are covered in beautifully preserved forests of old growth Black Pine, making the area particularly stunning.

Zabljak is a small mountain town with a population of about 2000. It is one of the best places to see Montenegro’s ‘Black Mountains’ and has an abundance of mountain restaurants. It’s the perfect place to get away from the crowds and immerse yourself in mountain life.

Sure can! A lot of people do, and it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Much Better Adventures are very social in nature and we’ve seen lots of new friendships born out of them. Expect a mix of solo travellers and very small groups of 2 or 3, all with a shared appreciation of escaping the city for the great outdoors to try something new and meet new people.

As you will be snowshoeing for five to six hours each day, you will need a moderate level of fitness. But don’t worry, your guide will be with you at all times and help you during any rough parts. Besides that, the trip is absolutely beginner friendly.

All of the food is local and freshly cooked mountain food meals to fill you up for those long days of snow shoeing. These include domestic cheese and other local milk products, dry meat specialties, fish, local fruit and vegetables. Drinks are not included.

Please contact your host upon booking, so all needed preparations can be made.

Absolutely! Just let us know when you book onto this adventure.

Unfortunately, this is dependent on the weather. If there isn’t sufficient snow, it is difficult to build a good shelter. Also, if it’s raining that very day it won’t be possible to dig and build a shelter. But no worries the last years, this hasn’t been a problem.

As this is a winter adventure, the average temperature in Montenegro will be around zero degrees. However, it can get colder in the night, even as low as -10°C to -20°C, so make sure you bring extra layers of clothing to keep you warm. During the day, it can be pretty sunny with clear skies.

No problem! There are several ski slopes around. Your host will show you where to rent skis and a ski pass if you need. Just let us know in advance!

It costs around 25 euros per day for a full ski pass and ski rent.

Your host will provide you with:

  • Snowshoes
  • Snowshoe poles

Your host recommends that you pack:

  • Backpack (about 30 ~ 40l)
  • Warm trekking trousers
  • Gore-Tex or similar jacket
  • Down jacket
  • Warm winter boots
  • Socks (thermal + cotton)
  • Woolen cap (or polar)
  • Clothes in layers
  • Winter gloves
  • Sunglasses
  • Sun-cream (sun protection SPF 50)
  • Water bottle (thermos recommended)
