What to Expect

Saturday: Travel to Vartop Ski Resort

You’ll be met by your guide at around 11:30 at Oradea Airport. Enjoy a meal at a local restaurant in the elegant city of Oradea before taking your 2.5-hour transfer to Vartop Ski Resort.

We know you’re eager to get your snowshoes on, so once you’re settled in the guesthouse, you’ll be taken on a hike to the Rusty Pit ravine; the largest natural erosion phenomenon in Romania.

Feeling a little more familiar with your surroundings, you’ll head back to the guesthouse for the evening. Enjoy dinner before relaxing in your room or perhaps in the guesthouse’ Jacuzzi – yes, there’s a Jacuzzi.

2,5 hours transfer, 2 hours snowshoe hiking

Sunday: Hike Curcubata Peak (1849m)

After a breakfast fit to fuel you for 8 hours of hiking, you’ll dive into the snow and begin your hike to the highest peak of the Western Carpathians – Curcubata Peak.

Hiking the Western Carpathians is anything but ordinary as some of the trails are over 100 years old. As you make your way to the main ridge of the Bihor mountains you’ll discover secret caves, hidden gorges and impressive frozen waterfalls.

It’s hard to believe there’s more to witness but as you reach the end of your 800m ascent, the summit of Curcubata Peak will reveal 360˚ views of the surrounding mountains and tiny traditional villages scattered among the valleys below.

When you return to the guesthouse there’ll be a well-deserved warm plum brandy, known locally as ‘palinca’, waiting for you. Enjoy dinner with new friends before you retire for a much needed night’s rest.

8 hours snowshoe hiking

Monday: Snowshoeing to native sites

Enjoy breakfast at the guesthouse before being collected for a quick transfer to the starting point of today’s hike.

The snowshoe trail today is a moderate one which will take you to a remote mountain settlement. You’ll be introduced to communities where fascinating old customs and traditions are still alive, despite the challenges of modern times.

Just above the hidden hamlet stands the 15m high iconic frozen Varciorog Waterfall; have your camera ready - you’re in for some spectacular shots as the sun glistens on its surface.

After a 5-hour hike, you’ll return back to the guesthouse for the evening. Enjoy a delicious evening meal while you relax in cozy surroundings, perhaps followed by a dip in the pool to loosen those muscles.

5 hours snowshoe hiking

Tuesday: Take the memories home

All good things must come to an end; after breakfast you’ll be driven back to Oradea Airport, arriving around 10:30, for your return flight home.

2.5 hours drive
