This off-season trip will show you Norway’s spectacular fjords form a truly unique perspective. Without the hoards of tourists, you’ll make your way from Stavanger to Bergen, hiking the majestic terrain with an air of peace and solitude like nowhere else.

Along the way you’ll join a guided winter hike to Preikestolen and Trolltunga; these viewpoints offer the most dramatic scenery of the Fjords and a panoramic view that’s hard to beat.

If you add a rental car to your trip, you can pick up your car at Stavanger Sola Airport at the following times*:

  • Weekdays: 7am to 9pm.
  • Saturday: 9am to 1pm.
  • Sunday: 1pm to 6pm.

You can drop off your car at Bergen Flesland Airport at the following times:

  • Weekdays: 7am to 11:30pm.
  • Saturday: 7am to 5pm.
  • Sunday: 12pm to 12am.

*All reservations arriving outside opening hours of the location will be charged 450 NOK (£40-£45) (including tax) when collecting the vehicle. Out of hours fee will also apply all day on public holidays.

This trip is suitable for adults who are in very good condition, and have previous hiking experience.
Here’s the distances again for you:

Kjerag boulder:

  • Total Distance: 8 kilometers (day 1); 9 kilometers (day 2); 8 kilometers (day 3)
  • Total Ascent: 825 meters (day 1); 375 meters (day 2); 75 meters (day 3)


  • Total distance: 2×4 km. Total ascent: 500m.


  • Total distance: 2×13 km. Total ascent: 1,200m.

This is a winter expedition to a remote part of the Fjords not accessible by car. You should expect and be prepared for snowy conditions and below freezing temperatures. Your guide will be on hand at all times to help while on the trek and can answer any questions you have when booking/before arriving.

Please note: due to the possibility of rapidly-changing weather conditions, it may be necessary to make changes to scheduled trips. In the event that your trip needs to be rescheduled for another day or cancelled on short notice, you may choose between joining the rescheduled trip or getting a refund. In the event that weather conditions deteriorate during your trip, it may be necessary to turn around on the trail or head back earlier than planned. If this happens, no refunds will be given.

Your guide will prepare a hearty Norwegian foods to keep you warm and your energy levels high. Expect stews that will warm both your body and soul.

During much of the winter and springtime, Fjord Norway’s majestic mountaintops are blanketed in thick layers of snow. Those who venture up the trails to Preikestolen, Kjerag, and Trolltunga during the off-season encounter peace and solitude unlike anywhere else.

Start point?

Pick-up at various locations in and around Stavanger.

We recommend that you arrive in Stavanger at least one day before the trip starts. Direct flights from the UK are available from Manchester, Gatwick, Heathrow and Aberdeen airports.

Finish point?

You’ll finish this trip in Bergen. Bergen airport also has direct flights to Manchester, Gatwick, and Aberdeen.

What to Expect

Friday: Fjord Cruise / Guided Hike to Kjerag Basecamp

You’ll be met by your guide this morning in Stavanger city-center for a briefing to prepare you for the trip before a short scenic transfer to the base of the fjord.

Hitting the water, you’ll take a ferry cruise along Lysefjord passing the towering Preikestolen and getting your first glimpses of the Kjerag Boulder.

Once back on dry land you’ll begin your first hike; 8km starting at the fjord’s edge and upward to an altitude of 825 meters above sea-level.

We’re not breaking you in gently; this trail follows a winter-closed road with 26 hairpin turns that takes you from the village of Lysebotn, up to the Sirdal mountains. The last leg of the trail is off-road with one awesome reward at the end as you reach Kjerag Basecamp, nestled in the beautiful snow-covered valley.

Unwind and enjoy the stunning sunset over the fjord as your guide prepares you a hearty Norwegian stew that will warm both your body and soul.

8km hike, ascent 825m, descent 75m

Saturday: Winter Day-Hike to Kjerag

An early start this morning and while the sun rises over the mountains, you’ll hike your way up to one of the absolute highlights of the trip - the Kjerag Boulder. There’s no shortage of dramatic scenery to indulge in along the way, and to see the mammoth glacial deposit close-up, suspended above a 984m deep abyss, is truly mesmerising.

After lunch, you will return to Kjerag Basecamp for another cozy night in this winter wonderland.

9 km hike, ascent 350m, descent 350m

Sunday: Guided Hike to Lysebotn / Drive to Preikestolen Mountain Lodge

A slower start this morning will give you the opportunity to enjoy the tranquility of the camp and participate in some snow activities.

After lunch, you’ll attack the 8km descent back to civilisation to catch the ferry back out to the mouth of the fjord, followed by the drive back to Stavanger.

From here, your guide will direct you to catch the ferry from Stavanger and Tau and take the forwarding 1-1.5 hour drive to your accommodation at Preikestolen Mountain Lodge. Your guide will drop you off at the car rental office and give you directions to the lodge.

When you arrive at the lodge it’s time to relax; shower, eat and rest while overlooking the tranquil Refsvatn Lake, ahead of tomorrow’s adventure.

8 km hike, ascent 75m, descent 825m

Monday: Preikestolen Winter Hike

After breakfast, your professional guide will meet you at the lodge and your hike will begin; you’ll travel up through the shifting terrain and onward to the mountain’s plateau.

After 2.5-3.5 hours of trekking, standing atop the 604-meter-high cliff, you’ll be rewarded with a simply awe-inspiring panoramic view of the Fjord-Norway at its best.

Take a moment; catch your breath and appreciate the privilege of being one of the very few people to have experienced Preikestolen during the tranquility of off-season.

Your guide will lead you back down to the trail-head, which will take about 2 hours before saying farewell.

You’ll now make your own way from Preikestolen Mountain Lodge to Trolltunga Hotel. This 4-hour journey is another great opportunity for more beautiful photography as you travel among the stunning range of fjords, mountains, lakes, and waterfalls before arriving at your accommodation for the next 2 nights.

8 km hike, ascent 500m, descent 500m

Tuesday: Trolltunga Winter Hike

After breakfast, the hotel shuttle will take you to the trailhead in Skjeggedal (20 minutes) to meet your guide and start the hike.

You’ll complete the first part of this trail on foot but then you’ll switch to snowshoes or skis as you continue up the mountain to Gryteskar, enjoying spectacular views towards the Folgefonna glacier along the way.

After approx. 6 hours of trekking, you’ll reach the famous Trolltunga rock formation. Take time to enjoy the stunning views of Ringedal Lake and Folgefonna Glacier.

With your camera full of unmissable shots, your guide will lead you back down to the trail-head, which will take about 5 hours.

26 km hike, ascent 1200m, descent 1200m

Wednesday: Self-drive from Trolltunga Hotel to Bergen

There are so many scenic routes to choose from for this journey; your guide will provide you with some route descriptions but from there the difficult choice is yours.

You’re likely to have some time to spend in Bergen before your forwarding journey home and if this is the case, be sure the main attractions are on your to-do list; Bryggen, Fløibanen Funicular, Bergen Aquarium or the famous Fish Market are all well worth a visit.

3-hour drive


You will spend the first two nights camping on snow and under the stars in the comfort of a pre-setup Basecamp Kjerag, consisting of high-quality spacious winter tents.

Included in this package is a night at the magic Preikestolen Mountain Lodge. The mountain lodge is widely known throughout Europe, as it is architecturally unique and environmentally friendly. The special character of the building and its harmonious interaction with nature gives all visitors a special experience.
