Build Your Own Igloo in the Swiss Alps

Sleep under the stars on a plateau of the western Swiss Alps in an igloo built by your own fair hands. 1 day off work.

This is your chance to spend a night living like the Eskimos. Equipped with a shovel and snow saw, you’ll build your own igloo and sleep under a starry sky.

After a cosy night in your self-built snow cocoon, and a warming breakfast at the nearby mountain hotel, you’ll click on your snowshoes to hike this magical winter wonderland with your local guide.

This trip will run with a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 per guide. Usually, additional guides will support you during the construction phase of your igloo.

Sure can! A lot of people do, and it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

You should be in good health but this is a gentle trip and no previous skills are required.

Forecasting the weather is sometimes difficult. If the trip has to be cancelled due to the weather, the guide will decide the day before 14:00. If the trip is deemed unsafe and has to be cancelled, your host will notify you by phone. However, it may happen that it is worse on the way than expected. We are in the midst of nature but you are in good hands with your experienced local guides. Sometimes the mountains are almost more exciting in changing weather conditions than in stable high-pressure weather.

During the trip you’ll enjoy a delicious warming cheese fondue and a traditional Swiss breakfast of bread, jams, cheese and cold meats.

We can cater for any specific diet requirements – just let us know before the trip.

The usual igloos we build are able to accommodate 4 people. Yet, should you feel like you have some spare energy and time, there is no problem of building a private igloo for 2 people.

Adelboden is a peaceful and relaxed area in the middle of the Bernese Alps, characterised by its village atmosphere. In winter, this idyllic chalet village turns into a winter sports paradise and is widely known for the ski resort of Adelboden-Lenk, host of the FIS Ski World Cup.

The Engstligenalp is a plateau of the western Swiss Alps. It lies south of Adelboden and at an altitude of above 2000m, it offers the perfect conditions to build an igloo. Since 1996 this stunning area has been protected by the Swiss Culture Landscapes of National Importance and rightly so.

Bus Station “Oey” in Adelboden - 10:00
Your adventure begins at the bus Station “Oey” in Adelboden at 10:00 where you will be met by your guide and driver. Schedule your flight to arrive the day before and spend the night in beautiful Zurich.
From here you can easily get to your start point in the morning. Take a direct train from Zurich to Frutigen (2 hours) and then continue via bus to bus stop “Oey”. Alternatively, you can fly in via Geneva Airport and hire a rental car to get to the meeting point in Adelboden (2.5 hours drive).

What to Expect

Saturday: Build your igloo

Your guide will meet you at around 10:00 in the Swiss Alpine village of Adelboden. You’ll be equipped with everything you need for the trip before heading to the station to catch the lift up to the Engstligenalp plateau (2000m).

When you arrive at the plateau, you’ll walk to the igloo village (15 minutes) and get to work on your igloo under the supervision of your mountain guide. Using a snow saw, you’ll cut the blocks before stacking them to build your home for the night; don’t worry, your guide is there to share the tips and tricks of the trade to ensure you have a habitable igloo before the sun sets.

After a warm-up break in the nearby mountain hotel, you’ll head back to your igloo to enjoy a cosy cheese fondue under the beautiful starry night sky.

Sunday: Snowshoe Hike

When you wake from your slumber, you’ll head back over to the mountain hotel for a fine Swiss breakfast.

Warmed and fed, you can enjoy a leisurely snowshoe hike through the stunning winter scenery before taking the gondola lift back down to the valley station. Back on the ground, your adventure slowly comes to an end.

You will sleep in your self-built igloo. You’ll be provided with blankets and all necessary equipment to keep you warm and comfortable throughout the night.
