Location

The Grossglockner is the highest peak of Austria and one of the 7 summits of the Alps. The summit lies on the border of the provinces of Tyrol and Carinthia.

At the foot of the mountain flows the Pasterze glacier; at 9 km, the Pasterze is currently the longest glacier in the eastern Alps but, as with so many of these awesome marvels, the Pasterze is rapidly melting.

What to Expect

Friday: Trek to Stüdl Hut

You will meet your guide for the weekend at the Lucknerhaus close to Kals. Once the group has gathered and all equipment has been issued, you’ll start your first hike up to a modern mountain refuge hut, Stüdl Hut (2801m).

This is an easy hike which will take around 3 hours. On arrival, you will enjoy a dinner prepared by the refuge hosts before getting a good night’s rest ahead of a big day tomorrow.

3 hours hiking

Saturday: Summit Grossglockner

A 5am start this morning and a good breakfast, to have the best chance at today’s challenging climb.

You’ll have a frosty start as you leave the Stüdl Hut to cross the ice-field of the Koednitz-kees glacier. From here you’ll be making your way up to Erzherzog-Johann-Hut (3454m).

To reach the hut you’ll have to work your way to pass the Mürztalersteig; expect a rocky via ferrata (category c) for about an hour.

After around 3 hours of challenging hiking you will reach the Erzherzog-Johann-Hut. From here you will follow a flat ridge for a time but it’s not long before the trail becomes steeper and rocky again as you lead up to the saddle; and from the saddle you’ll climb a flat rocky ridge on the Kleinglockner (3770m).

From the Kleinglockner, hold those nerves as you descend into the gap between Kleinglockner and Großglockner with a cable to facilitate the overpass. The challenge hits a new level as you climb (UIAA rock climbing level) up to the summit (3798m).

The views from the summit are simply astonishing and, given that you’ve just climbed the highest mountain in Austria, so is your feat. Take a moment for it all to sink in before you head back to Stüdl Hut suitably proud.

7-11 hours hiking/mountaineering

Sunday: Descent down to the valley

In the morning you will descend back down the valley, giving you the chance to admire the incredible mountain views one last time before you go home.

You will part ways with your host at the Lucknerhaus around 11:00 and continue your forwarding journey back to Salzburg Airport with a big tick on your summit list.

2 hours hiking

Accommodation

You will stay 2 nights at the Stüdl Hut. The mountain hut offers a cosy stay in a dormitory or shared room. Evening dinner and breakfast will be included for both nights and will be cooked by the friendly hosts of the hut.
