Starting at sea level, you’ll ascend to two of the highest points of the Madeira Islands, Pico Ruivo (1861m) and Pico do Arieiro (1816m).

This trail is not technical but does have a fair amount of climbing. You’ll negotiate paths with sheer drops and traverse through tunnels; along the way experiencing views that are simply breathtaking.

This is a challenging hike; a good level of fitness is required.

Funchal sees very little rainfall with June, July and August being particularly dry months.

Temperatures are high all year round, rarely dropping below 16°C (January) and reaching as high as 25° (August). However, temperatures will drop as you hike to the summit so be prepared with layers.

Lunch will be simple and energizing; bean and tuna salad, or chicken with pasta. Chocolate and juice will keep you going on the hike.

The restaurant at the São Paulo and Alegria apartment blocks serves traditional Alentejo cuisine as well as tasty Portuguese tapas.

Funchal is the capital city of Portugal’s Madeira archipelago. Backed by hills, it’s known for its harbour, gardens and Madeira wine cellars.

The Pico Ruivo is the highest point on the mountainous Madeira. Standing at 1862m above sea level, the summit provides spectacular views over the entire island.

The climb to the top is a challenging hike to say the least and there are two excellent routes of varying degrees of difficulty, making it a popular destination for those looking to challenge themselves.

What to Expect

Saturday: Sea to summit and back

Your host will meet you at 08:00 this morning in Funchal or Caniço, depending on your overnight stay, and head straight to Calhau de S. Jorge to start today’s challenging ascent to the top of Pico Ruivo (1861m).

The route is tough as you head out on dirt tracks and paths of endless steps etched into the steep hillside. As you approach the highest point, you’ll hike through the immense greenery and crashing waterfalls of Laurissilve Forest.

When you reach the top, you’ll be met with views of the entire island and beyond on a clear day. You’ll then hike back down to sea-level and to your accommodation for the night.

7 hours hiking, 26km, elevation 2800m

Sunday: Hike Pico do Arieiro

Today you will hike Pico do Arieiro, the third highest peak of the central massif (1816m).

Today’s route surrounds you with vertical drops and takes you through tunnelled paths. The views are spectacular once again, with views as far as the neighbouring islands on a really clear day.

Back at sea level, you’ll say goodbye to your guide in Funchal at around 17:00, ready for your forwarding journey home.

6 hours hiking, 22km, elevation 1700m

Accommodation

You will stay at the São Paulo and Alegria apartment blocks in Funchal. The apartments offer free WiFi, an on-site restaurant, rooftop terrace, gardens and shared barbeque.

Just 14km away from the airport and a 5-minute walk away from Funchal Cathedral, there are many local restaurants accessible within a 10-minute walk.
