Location

View map

Chapada Diamantina (literally “Diamond Plateau”) National Park sits deep inland, surrounded by table mountains, semi-desert, canyons, gorges, and some of the most beautiful caves in the world.

In the heart of the park, lies Pati Valley, a remote wilderness of rivers, waterfalls and hidden diamond history. Totally isolated from the modern world, locals travel to and from town by donkey. It takes about 5 hours on foot to reach the first neighbouring village.

Lençóis is a small, former diamond-mining town in Bahia. The cobbled streets are lined with 19th-century buildings and hold some nice examples of colonial architecture. There’re plenty of accommodation options in Lencois, from high-end hotels to backpacker hostels.

Start point? Your guide will meet you at 08:00 in Lençóis, Chapada Diamantina, Bahia. Your host will be in touch before your trip to finalise details.

What to Expect

Day 1: Mirante do Pati

You’ll be met in Lençóis at 08:00 and take the 2-hour drive to the path to Pati Valley.

The first part of the hike is steep and will take you to 1300m. After 40-minutes you’ll reach a wide plateau; if the weather has been wet, prepare for a small river crossing. Another 90 minutes of hiking and you’ll reach your lunch spot, a magnificent viewpoint out over Pati Valley.

You’ll continue your hike with time to stop for a dip in one of Pati Valley’s many streams. By late afternoon, you’ll reach the home of local residents who will host your stay for the night.

5-7 hours hiking, 15km 2 hours driving

Day 2: Cachoeirão Valley

Today, you’ll explore Cachoeirão Valley on a 20km hike. The trail starts with a challenging climb to 250m which makes the rest of the day a mostly flat and downhill route.

Around noon, you’ll arrive on the great canyon of the Cachoeirão Valley. From here you’ll have a clear view of the Cachoeirão Waterfall and the sheer 300m drop to the bottom. On your return to Pati Valley, you’ll have time for a swim before heading back to your homestay for dinner.

6-7 hours hiking, 20km

Day 3: Castle Mountain

After breakfast, you’ll start today’s hike to Castle Mountain. You’ll start with a challenging, rocky climb through the forest. The descent is even more difficult than the climb; the terrain is rocky and the mud can become slippery, but the trees will aid you along the way.

As you continue down into Pati Valley, the trail eases and you can choose to finish the day with a swim in one of the forest streams before heading back for dinner.

5-6 hours of hiking, 14km

Day 4: Blue Pool Cave

This morning you will take a steep hike out and look back over Pati Valley before leaving on the trail to Andarai. When you arrive, a jeep will take you to the Blue Pool Cave.

The water in this cave appears bright blue and is so clear, you can see rock formations 20m below. Borrow a mask and snorkel and enjoy a swim.

At the end of the day, you’ll be taken back to Lençois, arriving between 19:00 and 20:00 for your forwarding journey home.
