Piatra Craiului National Park extends on almost 100km² and has been protected since 1938. Researchers have discovered here a true biological treasure: 35 world unique species of invertebrates and 91 completely new species, 216 species of butterflies, more than 100 bird species and over 40% of the mammal species from Romania. The large carnivores and the gracious chamois are top of the list.

The Piatra Craiului mountains form a narrow and saw-like ridge, which is about 25 km long. The ridge is regarded as one of the most beautiful and iconic sites in the Carpathians and is divided into two parts, northern and southern.

The mountain village of Magura sits in the middle of the national park and until 50 years ago, could only be reached by horse and cart, resulting in a rural village untouched by modern times. Close by is the famous Bran Castle, the home of Dracula.
