Location

View map

The county of Donegal sits on the north-west tip of Ireland and boasts more rocks and climbing routes than Ireland in its entirety; 3000 recorded climbs on over 170 cliffs. This part of Ireland is beautiful in its remote location, unspoilt with many rocks untouched. The landscape here is isolated and wild, so much so, the reintroduction of golden eagles has been possible.

To visit Donegal is an escape; The Rosses area is bounded by rivers and presents a rocky barren landscape, studded with lakes and inlets of sea with storm beaches. There is very little industry in The Rosses; it has its own indigenous supermarket and otherwise relies heavily on tourism.

What to Expect

Day 1: Arrive in Donegal

You’ll arrive at the beautiful Donegal Airport in the early evening and be met by your host who will transfer you to your accommodation.

Get an early night and plenty of rest ahead of two big climbing days.

Day 2: Climbing on Cruit Island and Bristi Sea Stack

This morning, you’ll visit one of the most developed rock climbing spots in Ireland, Cruit Island. The granite cliffs on the island offer many orientations so you are guaranteed plenty of climbing practice regardless of the tide.

From here, you’ll visit Bristi Sea Stack – your first sea stack of the trip; a 25m high Arch Stack sitting 100m from the shore making it the ideal introduction to sea stack climbing.

After a long day, you’ll head to the guesthouse where you’ll stay tonight ahead of your second climbing day tomorrow.

Day 3: Visit Glenlough Bay and the ‘End’s of the Earth’ crag

Today, you‘ll take the journey to Glenlough Bay to one of Ireland’s most remote rock climbing spots, the ‘Ends of the Earth’ crag.

After a 3km clifftop walk, you’ll abseil down ‘Groovey Gully’ to the hanging base of the crag. All 13 routes can be climbed as single pitches from a ledge which runs the width of the 40m high crag.

With aching limbs, you’ll return to the guesthouse for a final night ahead of your flight home in the morning.

Note: This itinerary and the duration of the activities are subject to change due to group abilities and preferences, and weather conditions and forecasts.
