What to Expect

Day 1: Summit Pedra do Sino

Meet your guide and fellow hikers in Teresópolis, a city in the foothills of the Serra dos Orgãos National Park, once home to runaway slaves from the sugar plantations of Rio de Janeiro.

Head to the trailhead and begin your hike through the rainforest, passing waterfalls and keeping an eye out for monkeys in the canopy above, as well as the many plant species unique to the region.

Climb up through the forest and onto the rocky outcrop above, with plenty of breaks to rest and enjoy your surroundings

Enjoy the panoramic views over the entire national park from the 2,255-metre high summit of Pedra do Sino and on a clear day, see Rio de Janeiro and Guanabara Bay in the distance.

Stay for sunset and then make your way to a mountain lodge where you’ll stay tonight in time for a hearty meal and some serious stargazing.

Total distance walked – 11km, 4-5 hours

Day 2: Orchids and the Devil’s Needle

Rise with the sun in your mountain shelter and eat breakfast, before setting off on the Caminho das Orquídeas trail, home to rare orchids.

Reach the Mirante do Inferno viewpoint and rest and recharge whilst enjoying the views of the Devil’s Needle – a favourite rock climbing spot that resembles a finger reaching towards the sky.

Follow the trail back through the forest to Teresópolis, where your trip will end.

Accommodation

You’ll be staying in a mountain lodge inside the Serra dos Orgãos National Park. Accommodation is rustic and simple, with bunk beds in a dorm and shared bathrooms. Hot showers are available depending on the weather - and it goes without saying there’s no wi-fi or phone signal.

Located just be an hours drive from Rio de Janeiro, the Serra dos Órgãos National Park feels a world away from the bustle and traffic of the city. The park was named by Portuguese settlers, who thought that the granite peaks in the area looked like the pipes of an organ - or órgãos in Portuguese. Home to thousands of species of birds, mammals and insects, along with hundreds of plant species unique to the area, the park contains winding valleys, plunging cliffs and rocky granite outcrops that jut out above the rainforest covered slopes. At 2,255 metres The summit of Pedra do Sino is the highest point in the park, with views over the surrounding mountains and forests, as well as Rio de Janeiro and Guanabara Bay in the distance.
