Location

View map

This adventure will take you through the Alp’s most beloved peaks, valleys and lakes. The area is dotted with quiet, quaint villages with snow-covered chalet roofs, and it straddles France, Italy and Switzerland.

The Matterhorn, the mountain that the route encircles, is Europe’s most distinct mountain peak. Its pyramid-like summit changes and catches the light throughout the day. It’s no wonder Victorian climbers became obsessed with the peak when they first attempted to conquer the Alps in the 1850s.

Start point

Zermatt Train Station - 08:00
Your adventure begins at Zermatt Train Station at 08:00 where you will meet your guide. Your host suggests arriving a day before to spend the night in Zermatt. It is very easy to make your own way to Zermatt via train: 3.5 hours from Geneva Airport (GVA), 3.5 hours from Zurich Airport (ZRH) and 4.5 hours from Milan Airport (MXP). Alternatively, you can fly in via Geneva or Zurich Airport and hire a rental car to Zermatt (2.5 - 3.5 hours).

Finish point

Zermatt Train Station - 17:00
At the end of your adventure, you will be dropped back at Zermatt Train Station at 17:00.

What to Expect

Day 1: Trek through Zermatt, Täschalp, Charles Kuonen Bridge and Randa

Meet your guides at Zermatt train station at 08:00. Then cross the Charles Kuonen suspension bridge, the longest in the world, and begin your hike. You’ll already be able to see the peaks of the Weisshorn, Matterhorn and Täschhorn as you ascend through Zermatt. After a steep traverse of the Mattertal Valley, you’ll arrive in Randa, where you’ll stay the night in a traditional Swiss hotel.

Approximately 8 hours trekking across 9.5km.

Day 2: Trek through St. Niklaus, Jungu and Gruben

Wake up bright and early, and take a cable car to Jungu, a village known for its traditional farms. The trail starts off easily enough and you’ll pass through woodlands before the path opens up onto rocky terrain. Make the descent to Gruben and stay overnight in a delightful mountain hotel’s dorm.

Approximately 7 hours of trekking across 15km.

Day 3: Trek from Gruben to Zinal

Today you’ll get a taste of the Alp’s international identity. You’ll set off from Gruben to Zinal in Val d’Anniviers, where you’ll then enter the French-speaking area of the Valais. You’ll cross the Meidpass (2,790 meters) and then follow the sloping path until you reach Zinal.

Stop along the way at the historic Hotel Weisshorn and then try your chances at the Sierre-Zinal mountain marathon race trail. Spend the night in the village in a cosy guest house. If you’re a fan of locally brewed beer, Zinal has a number of craft beers worth having a sip (or pint) of.

Approximately 7.5 hours trekking across 20km.

Day 4: Trek from Zinal to Arolla

Hopefully, you didn’t drink too much beer last night because today’s a long’un. Take a cable car from Arolla to Sorebois, before embarking on your first mountain pass to the Col de Sorebois (3000m). A short downward track leads you to one of Switzerland’s biggest dams, Lac de Moiry, where you’ll then make your way back up to the Col de Torrent.

Take a plunge into Autannes lake, before heading to the small village of Les Hauderès. Then hop on a bus to Arolla and your overnight accommodation.

Approximately 10 hours of trekking across 18.5km.

Day 5. Trek from Arolla to Prayaer

Wake up and step into Italy. Today you’ll trek across the glacier Collon and its beautiful pass, before arriving in Rifugio Prarayer. You’ll spend the night here in a refuge run by a lovely local family, the Bionaz. Rest up for tomorrow’s climb or explore the nearby reservoir lake of Place Moulin.

Approximately 8 hours of trekking across 17km.

Day 6: Trek from Prayaer to Breuil/Cervinia

Trek from the Colle di Valcornera and suck in the panoramic views from Mont Dragon and the Grande Lago. Make sure you rest up when you arrive at Colle di Valcornera’s Rifugio Perrucca-Vuillermoz. The final descent to Breuil Cervinia takes around 4 hours, so you’ll need the energy.

Approximately 9 hours of trekking across 16km.

Day 7: Trek from Breuil/Cervinia to Plateau Rosa

Today’s trek is a little easier and you get to explore Zermatt, an authentic mountain village. You’ll either stay in Rifugio Teodulo or at Rifugio Guide del Cervino – the latter claiming the title of being the highest point on the Tour Matterhorn (3,480m). From Breuil-Cervinia, you’ll then jump on a lift to Plan Maison where you’ll travel along the Teodul pass (3,301m) ends.

Approximately 6 hours trekking across 8km.

Day 8: Trek from Plateau Rosa to Zermatt

It may be the last day, but it still packs a punch. Today you’ll see the marvellous Matterhorn in all her glory, all day and right from sun up. If there’s time, you’ll explore the Gorner Gorge. If not, you’ll make your way back to Zermatt, where you’ll be dropped off by your hosts.

Approximately 5 hours of trekking across 11km.

Note: This itinerary and the duration of the activities are subject to change due to group abilities and preferences, and weather conditions and forecasts.

Accommodation

You’ll be staying in a mixture of dormitories scattered across the Alps, as well as spending a few nights in a cosy hotel. No private rooms are available. The refuges are expectedly basic, but you do get to wake up 3000m up, poke your head out the window and be greeted by countless peaks and hidden valleys.
