The Kekova region was declared a Specially Protected Area in 1990 to protect the natural, cultural and geographic richness of the island and its surrounding coast.

The ancient sunken city of Simena was flooded after an earthquake in 5AD. Boat trips run to take visitors past the half-submerged ruins and through Kekova sound where there is ample snorkelling in the clear azure waters. Staircases descend into the water where the foundations of the houses can be seen, now beneath the sea.

Amidst the ruins inland, stands the 4th-century BC fortress perched above the village; and within it, the world’s smallest amphitheatre sits cut into the rock. There’s not only magnificent history to see from here, but also magnificent views over the entire village.
