Hut-to-Hut Trekking in Herzegovina

Conquer the rocky peaks of Prenj whilst sleeping in mountain huts along the way. 4 days. 2 days off work.

Trek south to north across the Prenj mountain range in the Dinaric Alps. As you traverse the remote wilderness and rugged terrain, you’ll aim to conquer at least three different peaks above 2000m, including the highest peak in the range, Zelena Glava (2155m).

This trip will run with a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12.

Sure can! A lot of people do, and it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

You need to be fit and experienced – this hike is classed as a medium/high degree of difficulty.

The weather is changeable so prepare for anything. If the conditions are wet, the terrain will become slippery and more challenging. It can be scorching hot or very cold and everything in between.

Breakfast will be traditional, and dinner will be simple, as we will be in the wild. Lunch will be picnic-style. Feel free to bring any snacks you like, that can last at least three days. It is essential to bring at least 2 litres of water per person and hydrating drinks (Powerade or Isostar). Plus, energy bars, chocolate, sandwiches and fruit.

Your host will provide the following kit: - Thin foam sleeping pad - Cooking gear - Plates, cups and cutlery - First aid kit

Additional hiking equipment such as hiking poles can be provided upon request. Just let your host know.

Location

Prenj is a mountain range in the centre of the Dinaric Alps. The range comprises of at least eleven peaks, the highest being Zelena glava at 2155m. The peaks bear typical dolomitic features with vertical rock faces, soaring over green alpine valleys and dense mixed forests.

Mostar straddles the Neretva River and is known for the iconic medieval bridge Stari Most, meaning old bridge. The nearby alleys are full of shops and market stalls, and the Old Bridge Museum explores the bridge’s long history.

Start point?
You will be met at Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) where you will be transported to Rujište. Your transfer will meet all flights scheduled to land by 11:00. Your host will be in touch before your trip to finalise details.

Finish point?
Your tour will end in Mostar, where you will be transferred back to Dubrovnik Airport (DBV). You are free to book any flight departing after 19:30. Your host will be in touch before the trip to finalise details.

What to Expect

Saturday: Trek to Bijele Vode Mountain Hut

Your host will collect you from Dubrovnik Airport at 11:00 and take you to Rujište, at the southern edge of Mt. Prenj (2-hour drive).

You’ll take a short and easy hike up to Bijele Vode mountain hut where dinner will be waiting for you to enjoy while you get to know your new hiking buddies.

Sunday: Summit the Twin Peaks

After breakfast, you’ll start your hike towards the highest peaks of Prenj; the route will take you through a valley logged between high rocky peaks.

Nearing the end of the day you will have your final ascent to the twin peaks, Zelena glava (2155m), and Otiš (2097m). From here you will have a 360-degree panorama of the peaks and valley of Prenj and Bosnia’s other major mountains.

You’ll then descend to your next mountain hut, arriving in time for dinner. In the evening there is a possibility to climb the small peak of Taraš, just for bonus points.

Monday: Summit Velika Kapa

After breakfast this morning, you’ll start your hike to the next hut, Vrutak. You’ll pass through endemic Bosnian fir forests, before getting to a pass with views of Tisovica valley.

After a short break at Vrutak hut, you’ll continue trekking towards Konjička Bjelašnica to reach Velika Kapa (2007m), a peak situated above the small town of Konjic.

After a picnic on the peak, you’ll start descending towards the northern edge of the mountain and towards your last hut stay at Rapta where dinner will be waiting.

Tuesday: Tour of Mostar

After breakfast in the hut, you’ll take a drive to Mostar for a walking tour of the capital of Herzegovina. The walking tour will take you around the UNESCO protected old town and to the rebuilt 16th-century Stari Most bridge.

From here, you’ll visit Blagaj with the largest natural spring in Europe, where you’ll enjoy local trout for lunch before departing for Dubrovnik Airport, arriving around 19:30 for your return journey home.

Note: This itinerary and the duration of the activities are subject to change due to group abilities and preferences, and weather conditions and forecasts.

Accommodation

You will stay at three different mountain huts during this trip; Bijele vode (1450m), Jezerce(1650m), and Rapte (1400m). Each offers basic dorm rooms with no or shared washroom facilities. These are unguarded mountain huts, meaning they will be in very basic condition. You can bring your own sleeping bag or rent one from your host.
