This trek is set among the northern parts of the Swedish mountain range in Swedish Lapland above the polar circle. This area is Europe’s last true wilderness and the stretches from town to town are often deserted. This vast, uninhabited, roadless area is defined as the ‘wilderness’ due to the preservation of the land’s near-natural state in which only traditional means of livelihoods, including fishing or hunting, can be practiced.

Natural phenomena are at their strongest here; the midnight sun in summer; the northern lights in winter; and the extreme temperature changes between seasons from -40°C to +30°C.

The terrain offers arctic birch forest, tundra, alpine peaks and green valleys formed during the last ice age. There will be plenty of eagles to spot and other birds of prey, as well as moose and you are almost certain to see wild reindeer.

What to Expect

Monday: Arrival Briefing and Welcome Dinner

You’ll arrive at Kiruna Airport before 14:00 and be met by your host who will transfer you to Abisko. You’ll be taken to your accommodation which you will need to arrange yourself for this first night, but your host recommends Abisko Turiststation.

Your guide will hold a briefing at Abisko Turiststation at 16:00 before you enjoy a welcome meal with the group.

Get an early night ahead of the hike tomorrow.

Tuesday: Hike the King’s Trail to Camp

Breakfast will be available at Abisko Turiststation at 07:30. If you choose to stay at an alternative hotel, you will meet the group at Abisko Turiststation at 08:30 to start the hike.

The first section of the hike will take you on the notorious King’s Trail, along the Arctic river Abiskojokka in the birch forest. You’ll then leave the trail and take a smaller path uphill towards Ballinvaggi valley.

The narrow path will eventually disappear and you’ll continue down on pathless terrain to set up camp in the middle of the valley.

12km hiking, elevation +650m

Wednesday: Creek Crossing in Gardenvaggi

Wake early for breakfast this morning before continuing to hike deeper into Ballinvaggi on a challenging, pathless route towards the next valley, Gardenvaggi.

You’ll remove your boots to ford Siellajohka creek before continuing on the northern side of Gardenvaggi to an impressive viewpoint of lakes and peaks.

You’ll set up camp for the night at this viewpoint on the hillside and enjoy dinner around the campfire with the group.

13km hiking, elevation +250m -300m

Thursday: Venture to Vistasvaggi

This morning, you’ll rejoin the King’s Trail along lakes Radujávri and Alisjávri where you will be able to take a swim. Soon after, you’ll take a break at a mountain cabin where you can stock up on energy snacks and supplies.

Leaving the cabin, you’ll head away from the King’s Trail to the opening of the next valley, Vistasvaggi, passing a traditional Sami village on the way.

A demanding climb will take you up to a barren plateau where you can find a spot by the lake to set up camp.

18.5km hiking, elevation +250m -250m

Friday: A Campsite With a View

After three days above the tree line, this morning you’ll hike down into the birch forest of Vistasvaggi and follow the valley south for the day.

As you make your way to the next campsite, you’ll tackle a climb that you will certainly feel. The end reward is a campsite with views into Vistasvaggi and Stuor Reidavaggi.

Set up camp and get dinner on the go while you enjoy the views.

14km hiking, elevation +200m -400m

Saturday: Camp by River of Vistas

After breakfast at camp this morning, you’ll continue hiking south into more birch forest and swamps surrounding the river of Vistasvaggi.

The valley is framed by the walls of the Kebnekaise massif to the west and lower landscape to the east.

You’ll find a spot to set up camp by the turquoise glacial river which looks far warmer than it actually is but you are welcome to take a dip regardless.

14.5km hiking, elevation +250m -400m

Sunday: Final Hike Downstream

Enjoy waking up in the wilderness for the last time this morning before you head upstream to Nikkaloukta.

At Nikkaloukta, your transfer will be waiting to take you back to Kiruna Airport for your forwarding journey home to civilisation.

6-11km hiking, elevation +70m -70m

Note: This itinerary and the duration of the activities are subject to change due to group abilities and preferences, and weather conditions and forecasts.

Accommodation

For your first night in Abisko you will need to book your own accommodation. Your host recommends the Abisko Turiststation mountain station where a number of room types are available for a clean and comfortable stay.

During the hike, you will camp at a number of predetermined camping spots along the route.
