This four-day kayaking trip is based on your host’s superb local knowledge gained after many years adventuring around Crete’s coastline. Along the way, you’ll explore Crete’s diverse landscapes from secluded beaches to craggy mountains and experience the warm Greek hospitality delightful cuisine of the Greek people.

You need to have some previous sea kayaking experience to undertake this trip. There will also be the opportunity to learn more skills along the way.

During the trip, you will cover 80km, roughly 20km a day, so a reasonable level of fitness is required.

Yes absolutely. It’s a great way to meet likeminded people.

If possible items should be packed into multiple drybags inside a rucksack/suitcase. Your rucksack/suitcase can be stored whilst you are kayaking.

Your local host recommends: - Swimsuit - Sun hat - Sunscreen - Sunglasses - Towel - Sandals or wet shoes (neoprene) along with an extra normal shoe for hiking. - Light clothes as well as some warmer ones (ie. fleece) - A rain jacket. - Head torch - Sleeping bag - Mosquito repellent - Any medication needed for personal medical conditions.

Your trip includes: - Kayak - Kayaking equipment - Camping stove and gas

Camping equipment can also be rented from your local host at extra cost.

Crete as a typical Mediterranean climate. Summer season is between June and September and is typically warm and dry with temperatures averaging around 29 degrees Celsius.

Spring and autumn months are slightly cooler with an average temperature of around 20 degrees Celsius and between 30-70mm of rain per month.

Winters are mild at around 16 degrees Celsius but can be wet and blustery.

The trip is run on a self-catered basis. There will be an opportunity to stock up on food before taking to the water. Usually, individuals take care of their own breakfast and lunch and then take turns cooking a communal meal in the evening.

As it is a self-catered adventure you are free to choose your own food.

You are free to book any flights that fit the start and end points of the trip.

Start point?
The trip begins at 08:00 in Heraklion where your local host will meet you. You will need to arrive in Heraklion the day before. If you are flying into Chania there is an option to make your own way to the start of the kayaking.

End point?
The trip ends in Heraklion on the evening of Day 4. From here you are free to explore some more or begin your onwards travel.

Getting there and away?
By Air: The closest airport is Heraklion International Airport (HER). There are regular flights to many European destinations served by over 60 carriers. Flights are less regular during the winter season (November-March).

This is the main airport on Crete and is 5km East of the city. A regular bus service runs to the centre for €1 and a taxi will cost around €14 and take around 15 minutes.

There is also an option to fly into Chania International Airport (CHQ) and make your own way to the start of the kayaking. Around 1:45 bus ride away. The airport serves European destinations through over 30 airline carriers.

By ferry: If you prefer a slower pace of travel a ferry from Piraeus Port in Athens to Heraklion is also available and takes between five-eight hours overnight arriving at between 05:30-06:30.

Crete, surrounded by the warm and sun-kissed Mediterranean Sea, is the perfect location for a kayaking adventure. The island offers a diverse range of scenery from white sandy beaches to craggy mountain cliffs. It is home to Samaria Gorge, which lays claim to the title of the longest gorge in Europe at 16 kilometres in length.

Crete is steeped in history. According to Greek mythology, the birthplace of Zeus is to be found in a cave on Crete. The Minoan culture began on Crete around 4000 years ago and is believed to be the first advanced society in Europe. Relics and ruins from Crete’s rich history can be found in many places throughout the island.

Anyone who has visited Greece will know of the immense warmth of the Greek people, and Crete is no different. Crete’s Mediterranean cuisine filled with fresh produce is not only bursting with flavour but is known as one of the healthiest diets in the world. Warm smiles, friendly greetings and great food top of the fantastic scenery for a truly magical experience.

What to Expect

Day 1-4: Kayak, Kayak, Kayak!

Your trip starts in Heraklion on Crete’s northern coast where your local host will meet you. From there, it’s a three-hour transfer to where the kayaking begins.

The full itinerary is something of a trade secret. But, rest assured, your host is a true local expert and has spent years exploring Crete’s craggy coastline.

Over the next four days, you’ll make the most of this local knowledge taking in secluded beaches, traditional fishing villages, ancient ruins and the dramatic Samaria Gorge.

Along the way your host is more than happy to teach you paddling skills to improve your confidence of kayaking at sea. You will enjoy swimming, hiking, kayaking and camping in some stunning locations in South West Crete.

Expect to paddle around 5 hours each day.

Note: This itinerary and the duration of the activities are subject to change due to group abilities and preferences, and weather conditions and forecasts.

Accommodation

No accommodation is included in the price of the trip. There is the option to camp out under the stars either with your own equipment or you can rent equipment from your local hosts.

A 3-4 season tent costs €30 for the duration of the trip while a camping mattress cost €10 for the duration of the trip. Sleeping bags are not available so you will need to bring your own.

If you would prefer to sleep in an apartment then please let your local host know as early as possible and they can arrange this for an extra fee.
