During summer the weather in the Swedish mountains is usually between 15°C and 20°C, but this can change quickly with the possibility of rain and wind. Nights are often cool.

In most cases, yes. If you do have allergies, or a specific diet, please let us know when you book. All participants will also be contacted before the tour starts to ensure that the planned food will work for everyone.

As everything has to be carried in, food will be tasty, lightweight and offer lots of energy. Breakfast usually consists of granola or porridge, with a choice of tea, coffee or hot chocolate. Lunch is typically hot soup, or a sauce with pasta, rice or mashed potatoes. Dinner meanwhile usually consists of cheese, crackers and cold cuts (often reindeer meat) for starters, followed by a main course of pasta bolognese, chilli con carne with rice or Thai style chicken curry (or similar) and chocolate pudding or pancakes for dessert.

A detailed packing list will be sent out to you before your trip, however you should include rain gear, a water bottle, comfortable hiking boots, headlamp and clothes suitable for hiking, including both base and warm layers.

No special skills are needed, although a moderate level of fitness is recommended, along with the ability to walk for around 5-6 hours a day across mixed terrain carrying a 12-20 kg backpack.

The only extra costs are:

  • Flights to and from Kiruna
  • Your first nights accommodation in Kiruna (we recommend Abisko Turiststation which has dorms and private rooms)
  • Any personal expenses

Set in the Arctic Circle, Swedish Lapland is in the far north of Sweden, home to the Sami people and a diverse selection of wildlife, including eagles, moose and of course reindeer. During spring and summer the landscape transforms into a lush landscape of birch forests, tundra, alpine peaks and deep green valleys formed during the last ice age.

What to Expect

Day 1: Arrive in Lapland

Fly into Kiruna airport, where you’ll be driven to the remote village of Abisko, located within the Arctic Circle and home to just 85 people.

Check into a lodge, hotel or guesthouse for the night (not included) then after a briefing on the adventure ahead, join your guide for dinner.

Day 2: Trek to Nissonvaggi Valley

After breakfast, set off on foot along the Kings Trail, the nation’s most famous hiking route, taking in the alpine summer scenery of peaks, gorges and winding rivers.

Leave the Kings Trail behind you and hike a smaller, less travelled path through the forest.

Follow a plunging canyon as it rises above the treeline and then enter the beautiful Nissonvaggi valley, home to reindeer and birds of prey where you’ll camp tonight.

12km hiking

Day 3: Hike to the Lapponian Gate

Wake up early for breakfast and then hike past mountain lakes and fields of brightly coloured flowers for a view over the barren and dramatic Bessevaggi gorge.

Follow the slope of Nissoncorru Mountain as it curves around and then enter the timeless landscape of Lapporten, or the Lapponian Gate, a lush U-Shaped valley with no marked trails.

Cross the forest and camp for the night besides one of the valley’s secluded lakes.

12km hiking

Day 4: Return to Abisko

After breakfast, break camp and follow your guide downhill, taking time to enjoy the view of the huge Torneträsk lake.

Leave the valley and hike back to Abisko, before being driven to Kiruna Airport where your adventure will end.

Accommodation

Your first night’s accommodation is not included, however, we recommend staying at Abisko Turiststation, which as dorm rooms as well as singles, twins or doubles.
