Need To Know

Please book your inbound flight to Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) for 13:00 or earlier. Your departure flight will leave from Podgorica Airport (TGD) on Sunday after 10:30. You can book any flights you like, providing they align to these times.

You’ll have your fill of fresh, home-cooked delicacies. Expect to sample the region’s famed cheeses and other dairy products, as well as dry meats, fish, freshly baked bread and pastries. Oh, and plenty of locally sourced fruits and veggies too. Dietary requirements can absolutely be catered for, just let your host know in advance.

Montenegro’s summers are lovely, and temperatures range from 24 – 30 °C. At night it tends to get cooler owing to its high altitude, so be sure to bring some layers of clothing to keep you cosy.

Your host asks that you pack:

  • Hiking trousers
  • Hiking shoes
  • Wind stopper/jacket
  • Breathable, quick-drying, sport clothes
  • Sandals/trainers
  • Sun protection (hat, sunglasses, sun cream)
  • Warm layers
  • Backpack (30L minimum)
  • Shorts and summer clothes

The following are not included in the tour price:

  • Flights to Dubrovnik/from Podgorica
  • Accommodation before or after the trip
  • Travel insurance
  • Drinks

Of course! There is a single room supplement of 30 EUR, mind.

You’ll need to be able to hike 5 - 6 hours and make 700 m ascensions at a reasonable pace, so good fitness is necessary. You don’t need any hiking experience, though.

Montenegro’s coastlines may get most of the attention, but it’s the highlands that really deserve it. In this lesser known corner of the Balkans, you can experience all the Alps’ and Pyrenees’ beauty (and then some) without battling the crowds. Picture serrated, black peaks sprinkled with the winter’s remaining snow. The mountains’ basins are hugged by pine forests and luscious green meadows and are littered with deep canyons and emerald glacial lakes.

Durmitor national park’s World UNESCO’ status is well earned; it’s home to innumerable ecosystems and habitats, some 314 protected animals – including 163 birds – while Tara Canyon, Lake Zaboljsko and its fir forests are worthy destinations in themselves. As well as natural wonders, the area is also steeped in history, such as its eight historical monuments that are scattered across the park.

Start point

You will be met at the Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) on Friday. Please arrive by 13:00 or earlier. Your host will be in touch beforehand to finalise the details.

Finish point

You will be dropped off at Podgorica Airport (TGD) on Sunday. Book any flight you wish after 10:30.

What to Expect

Friday: Explore Montenegro’s Black Lake

Meet your guides at Dubrovnik Airport. You’ll be transferred to Nikšić, where you’ll stop for a welcome lunch before driving to your accommodation in Central Montenegro’s Durmitor National park.

Settle in, then it’s time to see the Black Lake – but don’t let its name fool you, as it is famed for its clear, turquoise waters. Immerse yourself in its untouched beauty as you hike its circumference while encircled by rugged mountains and pine forests. Return to the chalet for dinner and unwind after the day’s activities.

Saturday: Climb Durmitor’s Highest Peak

Today’s the day – wake up bright and early, and depart for the Katun Dobri Do trailhead (1700m), where you’ll begin the day’s hike. The trail is one of Durmitor Massif’s most beloved, due to its quiet, natural beauty and outstanding views of the surrounding park.

Once you reach the summit, you’ll be greeted with awe-inspiring panoramic views of the glacial lakes known as the “Eyes of the Mountain”. Ascend the peak and head back to the accommodation.

Sunday: Departure Day

Pack up and tuck into the trip’s final breakfast. Then you will be driven to Podgorica Airport where you’ll fly either home or to your adventure’s next destination.

Note: This itinerary and the duration of the activities are subject to change due to group abilities and preferences, and weather conditions and forecasts.

You’ll spend two evenings in a quaint mountain chalet. You’ll wake up to views of the highlands, an area prized for its rich biodiversity and unparalleled landscapes. The chalet has a delightful in-house restaurant that serves traditional dishes. Meanwhile, the rooms are comfortable and basic. Two rooms have their own bathrooms. There is Wi-Fi across the whole building.
