On this weekend adventure, you’ll discover the breath-taking Yorkshire Dales whilst learning all the fundamentals of rock climbing as you go. Get ready to feel your adrenaline pumping as you take on iconic climbing challenges in the area, putting your new skills to the test.

Need To Know

The following are not included in the tour price:

  • Personal clothing, including waterproofs and adequate footwear

The course is designed for people with little or no previous climbing experience, but you should have a good level of general fitness to take part.

Of course! Many people who book our trips are solo travellers. Just be aware that the course requires a minimum of three people to book on in order for it to take place.

Your guide suggests that you bring:

  • 30-35L rucksack to carry all the equipment (please let your guide know in advance if you’ll need to borrow one)
  • Climbing shoes (good trainers, walking boots or rock shoes)
  • Suitable clothing
  • Waterproofs
  • Spare warm layers
  • Hat and gloves
  • Additional snacks and water
  • Optional: Chalk bags, harness or helmet, if you have your own

You will be provided with the following:

  • Harness
  • Helmet
  • Ropes
  • All technical climbing equipment

The course takes place during the summer months, so it’s usually warm and hopefully dry. Conditions can be unpredictable, though, so you should pack for all eventualities. If the weather is too wet, there’s the option to change venue or use a local indoor facility for further training and indoor climbing.

Breakfast at the hostel is a selection of cereals, toast and fruits and your packed lunch each day will include a variety of sandwiches and snacks.

Evening meals are traditional dishes such as chilli con carne, spaghetti bolognese, Lancashire hotpot or chicken with Mediterranean vegetables.

There’ll be a minimum of three and a maximum of 12 participants.

Yes, 12 years old. All under 18s must be accompanied by a participating adult.

Unfortunately, livestock in and around the climbing locations means this trip is unsuitable for dogs. Also, only registered assistance dogs are permitted to stay at the hostel.

Ingleton is easily reached by road. It’s just 10 miles off J36 of the M6 if you’re travelling from the north, or 15 miles off J34 from the south. The hostel is just off the A65 Skipton to Kendal road.

By rail, Clapham, Bentham and Ribblehead stations are all within a 10-minute drive. But for easy bus connections to Ingleton, take the train to Settle or Lancaster.

Ingleton is the gateway to some of the best rock climbing in the Yorkshire Dales. The charming village is surrounded by mountainous countryside, gushing waterfalls and impressive caves. It’s the perfect base from which to begin your rock climbing adventure.

The surrounding Yorkshire Dales boast a landscape of limestone and gritstone cliffs, ideal for novice and experienced climbers alike. The different rock types make for interesting and varied climbs, all within such a beautiful setting.

The whole area is rich in climbing history and is home to a number of iconic spots, such as Twistleton Scar, which climbers of all abilities will love.

Borwick Hall Outdoor Education Centre - 18:00
Your adventure begins with a brief introduction at the Outdoor Education Centre in Borwick at 18:00. Getting there by car is the easiest option. Should you arrive by train, the closest train station is Carnforth. From here it’s 15 by taxi.

Finish point

Climbing location in Yorkshire Dales (varies per day) - 17:00
Your adventure ends at the chosen climbing spot of the day at 17:00. Therefore the exact location cannot be provided yet.

What to Expect

Friday: Arrival and Introduction

After making your own way to the Yorkshire Dales, you’ll head to Borwick Hall, your accommodation for the weekend. At 18:00, you’ll be met by your hosts, who’ll show you around and help you get settled in.

You’ll be briefed on each of the climbing venues you’ll be visiting and find out what the aim is for each day.

Introductions all done; it’s time to tuck into your first big meal of the weekend, before walking it off as you explore Ingleton.

Saturday: Learning the Ropes

Wake up bright and early, ready for your first full day. Make your way down to breakfast at the hostel and tuck into a continental spread, setting you up nicely for the day ahead.

Today, you’ll head out into the Dales, where your qualified instructors will teach you all the basic rock climbing skills. You’ll be learning rope-work, belaying, basic knots, climbing communication, guidebook interpretation and how to safely use the climbing equipment.

In the evening, return to the hostel, kick your boots off and enjoy another tasty evening meal with the group.

Sunday: Climbing and Abseiling

After breakfast, your instructors will pick out the best of the Yorkshire Dales’ iconic climbing locations to go and put your newly learnt skills into practice.

You’ll have plenty of opportunities to try different climbs, each with varying levels of difficulty. You’ll also be given a lesson in abseiling and get to try that too.

At 17:00, the course will end and you’re free to head home from your location, ready to book your next climbing adventure.

You’ll be staying at the magnificent Borwick Hall, located right on the edge of the stunning Yorkshire Dales. The Victorian property is perfectly situated for all the great climbing spots that you’ll visit throughout your trip, so you won’t have far to go to get to them. The hostel will set you up for the day with a continental breakfast and refuel you with a deliciously filling dinner each evening, plus provide packed lunches to take away with you.

You’ll be booked into dorm rooms with shared facilities for the duration of your stay, but there are private rooms available at an extra cost. All bedding is provided and towels are available to hire from reception, or you can take your own.
