This trip will take you beyond hiking as you climb, scramble and abseil your way around four of the peaks in the Rila mountain range. You’ll tackle the via ferrata route of Kuklata to the panoramic ridge with views over the valleys of Rila monastery and peaks of Malyovitsa.

This trip will run with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6.

Sure can! A lot of people do, and it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Good physical condition and previous mountaineering experience are required for this trip. Some climbing experience is an advance. Climbing difficulty grade is up to 4 UIAA, so climbing experience would also be advantageous. 4 UIAA – Holds and supports can become rare and/or small. A good climbing technique is required to climb the various rock structures (chimneys, crevices, corners, etc.) as well as a certain degree of specific training. The physical inability to overcome certain passages can be compensated by the support of your guides.

Temperatures in the high parts of the Rila mountain reach 6°C-10°C in the summer, the valleys being warmer. At night temperatures are lower with possible morning frost in September. June is usually the month with the largest number of rainy days.

Unfortunately, the minimum age to join this trip is 18.

A mountain hut dinner usually consists of two kinds of soup (beans or lentils), chips, grilled meat, omelette, salad.

For breakfast, you can expect fried bread with eggs, cheese, or jam.

You’ll take a packed lunch with you during the day usually consisting of sandwiches, fruit and a sweet snack.

The Rila mountain range is the highest range of Bulgaria and the Balkans, with its highest peak, Musala, at 2925m. Rila is abundant in glacial lakes, waterfalls and hot springs and is the origin of some of the longest rivers in the Balkans.

Malyovitsa is a 1½-hour drive from Sofia. It is one of the most spectacular and alpine areas of Rila with a concentration of rock giants and vertical walls overpassing 400m. It hosts some of the most legendary alpine, hiking and ski touring routes and is equally popular in summer and winter.

Start point

You will be met at Sofia Airport (SOF) where you will be transported to Malyovista. Your transfer will meet all flights scheduled to land by 18:30. If you’d prefer, you can discuss with your host the option of being collected from the city centre of Sofia.

Finish point

Your tour will end in Malyovista, where you will be transferred back to Sofia Airport (SOF). You are free to book any flight departing after 17:30. If you’d prefer, you can discuss with your host the option of being dropped off in the city centre of Sofia.

What to Expect

Friday: Arrival and Transfer to the Mountain hut

Your host will meet you at Sofia Airport at around 18:30 and transfer you close to the Malyovitsa hut (1½-hour drive).

You’ll hike the rest of the way to the mountain hut where you will stay tonight and rest ahead of some challenges tomorrow.

1 hours hiking, ascent 300m

Saturday: Hiking and Abseiling

After breakfast at the hut this morning, you’ll hike for approximately 2 hours to a col between the two peaks Zliya zab (2678m) and Lovnica (2695m); this is your start point for some real climbing.

The climb to the peak of Zliya zab will take around 3 hours. After a short break, you’ll descend by abseil down the south side of the mountain and continue on to tackle two more peaks – Orlovets (2685m) and Petlite.

Feeling weary, you hike back down to the hut for dinner and a good night’s rest.

8-9 hours hiking, ascent 800m, descent 800m

Sunday: Via Ferrata

Fuel up on breakfast at the hut before you begin a short hike to the bottom of Kuklata rock (2257m) in preparation to take on the via ferrata.

The via ferrata route will take 2-2½ hours, after which you’ll reach the ridge with panoramic views of the neighbouring peaks and valleys.

After a short break, you ‘ll descend back down where your transfer will be waiting to take you back to the airport for your forwarding journey home.

6-7 hours hiking, ascent 300m, descent 600m

You will stay in a dorm room with shared bathroom facilities in the Malyovitsa hut. Please note that the bathroom in the mountain hut is fairly basic.
