This trip will take you on the popular route traversing the rugged Trionite ridge to Malka Musala (2902), Irechek (2852), and the highest Rila peak, Musala (2925m). You’ll experience a hike on the edge with safety ropes and a day of rock climbing the crags of Borovets.

This trip will run with a minimum of 2 and a maximum of 6.

Sure can! A lot of people do, and it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

With 9-10 hours of on and off trail hiking, you need a high fitness level for this trip. However, previous climbing experience is not necessary; in fact, this trip is the perfect introduction to rock climbing.

Unfortunately, the minimum age to join this trip is 18.

Temperatures in the high parts of the Rila mountain reach 6°C-10°C in the summer, the valleys being warmer. At night temperatures are lower with possible morning frost in September. June is usually the month with the largest number of rainy days.

Your food will be provided by your accommodation. Expected a continental breakfast and a traditional Bulgarian cuisine for dinner.

Sofia Airport (SOF) is served by flights from all over Europe. You’re free to book whichever flights you like as long as they meet the included transfer times.

You will be met at Sofia Airport (SOF) where you will be transported to Borovets. Your transfer will meet all flights scheduled to land by 18:30. If you’d prefer, you can discuss with your host the option of being collected from the city centre of Sofia.

Your tour will end in Borovets, where you will be transferred back to Sofia Airport (SOF). You are free to book any flight departing after 17:30. If you’d prefer, you can discuss with your host eh option of being dropped off in the city centre of Sofia.

Musala is the highest mountain of the Rila mountain range and the highest peak in the Balkans. The range is abundant in glacial lakes, waterfalls and hot springs and is the origin of some of the longest rivers in the Balkans.

Borovets is the gateway to numerous ski runs on Rila National Park’s Musala ridge. There are many cycle routes through the alpine landscape and footpaths leading through the valleys.

Start point

You will be met at Sofia Airport (SOF) where you will be transported to Borovets. Your transfer will meet all flights scheduled to land by 18:30. If you’d prefer, you can discuss with your host the option of being collected from the city centre of Sofia.

Finish point

Your tour will end in Borovets, where you will be transferred back to Sofia Airport (SOF). You are free to book any flight departing after 17:30. If you’d prefer, you can discuss with your host eh option of being dropped off in the city centre of Sofia.

What to Expect

Friday: Arrival and Transfer to Guesthouse

Your host will meet you at Sofia Airport at around 18:30 and transfer you to the family-run guesthouse that will be your accommodation during the trip.

1½ hour drive

Saturday: The Three Highest Peaks

After breakfast at the guesthouse, you’ll take the short transfer to Borovets where you will take the gondola up to 2300m.

From this point, you will traverse the three highest peaks – Musala (2925m), Malka Musala (2902), and Irechek (2852). You’ll hike along the steep, narrow, rugged terrain of the Trionite ridge, secured by a rope.

With three peaks achieved, you’ll head back down to the guesthouse for some dinner and well-deserved R and R.

9-10 hours hiking, ascent 700m, descent 700m

Sunday: Climbing at Borovets

After breakfast this morning, you’ll head back to Borovets and spend the morning on the nearby climbing crag.

The crag offers 21 routes of varying difficulty; there is something for everyone from absolute beginners to intermediate climbers.

With your muscles aching with achievement, you’ll take the transfer back to the airport at around 16:00.

You’ll stay in a shared double room at a local family-run guesthouse. Single occupancy can be arranged upon request.
