You will be provided you with a wetsuit and surfboard to use for each surf lesson. For those who have never surfed or who have only surfed a handful of times, your hosts use the beginner, specific soft boards, making it easy to catch waves and stand up. As you progress through your lessons, the coach may move you onto different boards and you may even find yourself riding a regular ‘hard’ board by the end of the camp. For those who have surfed before and have an understanding of how to catch waves and handle a board in crowded conditions, your hosts can offer regular epoxy or fibreglass boards.

Your hosts use 4:3mm wetsuits that are well maintained and are sure to keep you warm for the duration of each 2-hour session.

All equipment for sand boarding will also be provided.

Your host recommends to pack:

  • Waterproof sunscreen (zinc and or ‘Island Tribe’ recommended)
  • Towels x 2
  • Bathing suit/boardshorts
  • Warm jacket
  • Sandals
  • Bottle of water

Other recommendations are: - Camera - Mobile phone - Personal medicine if required (please inform your guide in case of any specific allergies.)

We do cater for dietary restrictions, however we mean actual restrictions, such as vegan, vegetatian, lactose intolerant and allergies and not simple preference.

You will be allocated a unisex dorm room.

Simple answer, no.

Muizenberg beach has a shark warning system in place, with spotters located at high lookout points. If a shark is seen nearby, the water is cleared until it swims away from the area.

Muizenberg Beach is the safest beach at which to learn to surf in South Africa for two reasons. Firstly Muizenberg has spotters on the lookout and a shark warning system in place. If a shark is spotted anywhere near the water is cleared until the shark is gone. Secondly, the shallow sandbank that creates the gentle breaking waves also ensures the sharks stay out at sea - far away from any surfers!

There’s nowhere quite like Cape Town in its unique combination of cultures and landscapes; craggy mountain ranges meet white beaches, and spotting a zebra grazing on the slopes of Table Mountain can be a normal occurrence. Moving into the hustle and bustle, Cape Town has a real urban edge too with plenty of art galleries, bars, restaurants, and shops.

Arniston is a village nestled between sand dunes and farmland just a 2½-hour drive from Cape Town. With the warmer azure blue waters of the Indian Ocean lapping on its shores, the surf here is great for beginner to intermediate surfers all year round.

What to Expect

Friday: First Surf Lesson and Coastal Drive

Your host will collect you from the city for the beautiful coastal drive to Hermanus. You’ll stop at one of the many beaches en route for your first surf lesson where you will learn the basics of surfing and ocean awareness.

You’ll enjoy lunch in Hermanus before continuing your journey through the canola fields to your accommodation in the seaside village of Arniston.

Tonight, you’ll enjoy a home-cooked dinner as you get to know the group and your guides.

Saturday: Surf, Shipwrecks, and BBQ on the Beach

After breakfast this morning, you’ll grab your board and stroll down to the beach for your second surf lesson. During this lesson, you will consolidate the skills you have learnt so far and should feel more comfortable in the surf.

After lunch, you’ll take the back roads to the southernmost tip of Africa to explore a nearby shipwreck which offers some great photo opportunities. You’ll return to Arniston via farm roads; be on the lookout for ostriches and zebra along with some amazing bird life.

When you arrive back, you’ll grab your sand boards and head for the nearby sand dunes to ‘surf’ the sand whilst watching the sunset before enjoying a South African braai (barbeque).

Sunday: Final Lesson and Exploring Sea Caves

After breakfast, you’ll walk down to the beach for your third surf lesson where you’ll learn how to turn on unbroken waves.

You’ll then take a nature hike along the dunes to an impressive sea cave for which the area is famous; there may even be the opportunity to swim in the many rock pools along the way.

After lunch, you’ll head back to the city via Sir Lowry’s Pass offering sweeping views across the Cape Town metropolitan area. You’ll arrive back in Cape Town by the early evening feeling like you’ve found your home.

Please note: The order of itinerary may be altered to suit prevailing surf conditions in order to ensure you have the best surf camp experience possible.

Your accommodation will be a cosy beach house designed for surfers. It offers two rooms with dormitory-style beds, one double room, an outside barbeque area, a fully equipped kitchen, a chill-out lounge and outdoor and indoor shower facilities.
