Sea Kayak and Wild Camp Norway's Islands and Fjords
Join a mini adventure to explore the remote islands and fjords of Norway's Askoy Region, just north of Bergen. 2 days.
Day 1: Kayak and Summit Mt.Eldsfjellet
Your adventure begins at 10:15 at the host’s base on the island of Herdla, just 45 mins north of Bergen. An optional transfer from the city center at 09:30 is available for you to add to the tour. You’ll meet your guide over tea and coffee before loading the boats and hitting the water. After some introductory safety training, it’s time for the off.
Day 1 is a 10-20 km paddle around the green-topped craggy edged islands around Herdla. Once arrived, you’ll swop kayaks for boots and head up Eldsfjellet. The summit sits at a modest 324 metres, but as the highest mountain in the islands, it offers a commanding view.
As you relax and take in the view, the team will establish the camp for the night. There is an option of a further small hike then your guide will prepare dinner. The mountain is a tranquil setting to spend the night, far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
Day 2: Sea Kayaking
Awake to the sound of the birds and arise to a freshly prepared breakfast in your mountain campsite. Take a minute to breathe in the fresh air and appreciate your surroundings before packing up ready to hit the water once again.
The exact route will depend on the group but you can expect another 10-20 km of fantastic sea kayaking through beautiful surroundings.
The journey ends back at your local host's base. There’s a chance for a shower to freshen up and a hot drink. Then it’s time to head back to Bergen wishing your fellow travellers and guide a fond farewell.
Note: This itinerary and the duration of the activities are subject to change due to group abilities and preferences, and weather conditions and forecasts.
All our adventures take place in wild places. Things can go wrong in wild places. Your perfectly planned itinerary may change a bit (or a lot) if the weather turns, someone gets hurt, or a volcano erupts. Usually though, changes make it all the better.
This adventure takes place around the island of Herdla, around 45 minutes’ drive North of Bergen. The region is home to many of the fjords that Norway is so famous for. The rugged landscape is filled with green-topped islands fringed by rocky coastline down to the clear waters of the Norwegian Sea.
One of the best ways to explore this region is by sea kayak. With difficult access, many of the islands retain a tranquil and remote feel – the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of day to day life. Because of their remoteness many of the islands have a rich birdlife, sure to pique to the curiosity of any avid twitchers. Herdla itself has a nature reserve that is home to 220 species of bird.
During your trip, you’ll climb and camp on the island’s highest mountain, Eldsfjellet. Standing at 324 metres above sea level, the summit is relatively diminutive by mountain standards but nonetheless provides outstanding panoramic views. Camping in the wilds of Norway with nothing but the sound of birds and the lapping of the waves is an experience not to be missed.
This adventure begins at 10:15 at the host’s base on the island of Herdla. An optional transfer is available from near the Tourist Information Office in Bergen at 09:30.
You will finish back at the base on Herdla. If you purchased the (optional) transfer, you will be returned to the city centre.
