This adventure takes place around the island of Herdla, around 45 minutes’ drive North of Bergen. The region is home to many of the fjords that Norway is so famous for. The rugged landscape is filled with green-topped islands fringed by rocky coastline down to the clear waters of the Norwegian Sea.

One of the best ways to explore this region is by sea kayak. With difficult access, many of the islands retain a tranquil and remote feel – the perfect place to escape from the hustle and bustle of day to day life. Because of their remoteness many of the islands have a rich birdlife, sure to pique to the curiosity of any avid twitchers. Herdla itself has a nature reserve that is home to 220 species of bird.

During your trip, you’ll climb and camp on the region’s highest mountain, Eldsfjellet. Standing at 324 metres above sea level, the summit is relatively diminutive by mountain standards but nonetheless provides outstanding panoramic views. You will also have fantastic views from your unique bed for the night, nestled high on a cliff in your portaledge accommodation.

This adventure begins near the Tourist Information Office in Bergen at 09:30 where you will be collected by your local host.

Finish point

You will be transferred back to the Tourist Information Office in Bergen around late afternoon/early evening on day 2.

What to Expect

Day 1: Sea Kayaking and Portaledge Camping

Departing Bergen at 09:30, it’s a 45-minute transfer to your host’s base on Herdla. Your guide will give you a quick briefing then it’s time to hit the water for some safety training. Today, it’s a 10-20km kayak through beautiful island scenery to Eldsfjellet mountain.

Swopping kayaks for boots it’s a hike to the 300-metre summit with panoramic views all around. To prepare you for your portaledge experience, your guide will go through some rope safety training before dinner. There is also the option of another short hike if you feel like it.

While you relax your guide will establish your unique cliffside accommodation. A portaledge is a thrilling way to camp, both exhilarating and peaceful with outstanding views - abseiling into bed is a unique experience not to be missed.

Day 2: Sea Kayaking

You’ll wake in your cliffside canvas nest. Take a moment to appreciate your fantastic position and breath in the fresh sea air. When you’re ready to depart, a freshly prepared breakfast and hot drink await to kick-start your day.

The exact route will depend on the group, but you can expect another 10-20 km of fantastic sea kayaking around the regions stunning green-topped craggy islands.

The journey ends back at your local hosts base. There’s a chance for a shower to freshen up and a hot drink. Then it’s time to head back to Bergen wishing your fellow travellers and guide a fond farewell.

During this trip you will be sampling some truly unique accommodation, camping on a portaledge. A portaledge is a metal frame and stretched ripstop nylon platform tent hung from a cliff. They were designed to allow intrepid mountaineers to tackle the world’s gigantic ‘big walls’, sometimes spending weeks in a vertical rock world. This is a fantastic opportunity to experience portaledge camping and what better location for it than a remote Norwegian island.

Your experienced guide will establish the portaledge for you and provide a full safety briefing to ensure that you are completely safe at all times. Whilst you are camping, they will also prepare your meals so all you have to do is kick back, relax and make the most of your peaceful surroundings.
