Sure can! A lot of people do, and it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

While the weather in Tromso can be rather unpredictable, Tromsø is a ‘mild’ Arctic destination due to its position next to the Gulf Stream which brings warmer air to the North. The average winter temperature in Tromso is around -4°C, though if you travel inland it can get as low as -25°C. The weather can be very changeable so you should be prepared for all eventualities!

This trip is only suitable for children age 6 and over. If you’d like to bring the whole family, including children of any age, then a private tour can be arranged.

On this trip you’ll catch your own fish in the Arctic fjords, spot Eagles soaring overhead in search of prey, large flocks of migratory seabirds, along with seals, dolphins, and if you’re lucky - whales.

While we can never guarantee that you’ll see the spectacular Northern Lights, if you’re travelling from September to March we have a 88% success rate in spotting them.

The Northern Lights start appearing above the Arctic circle from the end of August until the end of March. The strongest lights can be seen when the seasons are changing, during September and March, however from October to February are also excellent times to see the Northern Lights. They are unpredictable and can be seen at any time from 18:00 to 06:00, with the most ‘popular’ viewing time between 20:00 and 02:00.

Yes! Tromsø is a fantastic Arctic destination and there’s a whole host of other adventures you can enjoy if you have a little more time, including chasing the Northern Lights by minibus, snowshoe hiking, dog sledding and reindeer sledding - just ask your host for more information.

The weather in the Arctic can be rather unpredictable, so you should be ready for anything. Layers are the best way to keep warm and your host will provide you with safety equipment, warm sailing suits and slippers to wear. Your host recommends that you also bring:

  • A small bag (hand luggage size) for your time onboard the boat. Space is limited, so any larger suitcases can be stored securely at the base camp office in Tromsø.
  • Base layers - thermal leggings and a long-sleeved top
  • First layers - Tracksuit bottoms or hiking trousers, a warm jumper and a soft shell jacket e.g. a fleece or a down jacket (or both if you feel the cold)
  • Top layers - an outer weatherproof jacket and trousers e.g. ski or all-weather hiking clothing
  • Waterproof boots e.g. hiking boots
  • Trainers
  • Small day pack
  • A hat that covers your ears
  • Scarf or Neck Gaiter
  • Insulated or Gore-tex gloves
  • Wool socks
  • Camera (and a tripod if you’d like)
  • Personal toiletries
  • Swimming costume
  • Hand lotion & lip balm
  • Spikes for shoes (can be purchased in Tromsø)
  • Spare batteries - the cold means that devices run out much quicker than normal

What to Expect

Day 1: Set sail on the Arctic Fjords

Meet your guide at base camp in central Tromsø and walk alongside your small group to the town’s harbour, 200 metres away.

Climb onboard your home for the night – a modern and comfortable catamaran and get settled into your lovely double cabin.

Sail out onto the Norwegian Fjords under a starry sky and learn about the adventure ahead from your experienced local guides.

Travel into the wilderness, far from any light pollution, for your first chance to witness the legendary Northern Lights.

Try your hand at night navigation alongside the skipper, before sitting down for a homemade Norwegian meal in the saloon, whilst the crew keeps watch for the aurora.

Relax on the catamaran’s nets, surrounded by warm blankets and comfortable pillows and enjoy the rest of the evening on deck. You’ll have plenty of time to spot the Northern Lights, take photos and enjoy being surrounded by the Arctic wilderness, before settling down in your warm and cosy cabin for a good nights sleep.

Day 2: Travel through the Arctic wilderness

Wake to the sound of lapping waves and the smell of fresh coffee, then start your day with breakfast in a hidden bay.

Experience the beautiful Norwegian Fjords by day, as you spot wildlife, including seals and dolphins and reindeers grazing on the shoreline.

If you’re travelling before mid-January you’re in for a special treat as your chances of spotting Orcas and Humpback whales close-up are especially high.

On the way back to Tromso, try your hand at fishing*, with a 99% success rate, and then learn the basics of sailing and navigation in the far North alongside the crew before taking a spell as captain.

Relax in the saloon while the chef cooks your catch to perfection and taste the freshness of the untouched Arctic wilderness, including a traditional Norwegian fish soup, cooked to the chef’s secret recipe.

Return to Tromsø and say goodbye to the crew, before returning to base camp where your Arctic adventure will end.

  • Depends on the day’s weather conditions

The catamaran comfortably accommodates up to ten people, so it’s nothing like the huge cruise ships. It is spacious and comfortable, and all cabins are doubles with a small en-suite bathroom (an extra bed can be arranged in the cabin for children between 6 and 12). The boat itself has a warm indoor saloon with a fully equipped kitchen where your meals will be prepared, and a partly heated outdoor saloon to keep gear, boots and the warm safety suits which will be provided. A large outside deck has comfortable pillows and blankets to sit on when enjoying the Northern Lights, or to relax while cruising through the mystical fjords of the Arctic.

If you’re a solo traveller, please note that you’ll have to share a double bed (with 2 single duvets) with another solo traveller due to the limited space onboard. Should you not feel comfortable sharing a bed with another solo-traveller, please let your host know when booking. A private cabin can be arranged for a NOK4000 supplement.
