Your lead guide will be there to greet you when you arrive at Shotley Marina around 21:30 for a safety briefing before setting off. Your kayak and gear will be ready for you and we’ll advise you as to what to wear for the evening.

The Shipwreck Pub at Shotley Marina offers good food and drinks so it may be an idea to have your evening meal there before your trip.

The paddle is a gentle one as you glide through the water that glistens with the harbour lights. You’ll follow the shoreline and land on the sand spit for a rest and a warming glass of mulled wine.

Enjoy the tranquillity of kayaking at night for just over an hour before you reach the small harbour of Harwich in preparation for the annual firework display at midnight.

The fireworks are magnificent; the display is conducted from the barge moored in the deep water channel and lasts around 30 minutes. You’ll have front rows seats with a perfect view from your kayak – Happy New Year!

When the celebrations are over and as the mumblings of Auld Lang Syne fade, a gentle paddle back to Shotley Marina, arriving around 01:00, having had an amazing start to a new year. A once in a lifetime experience not offered anywhere else on the east coast.

Please Note

All our adventures take place in wild places. Things can go wrong in wild places. Your perfectly planned itinerary may change a bit (or a lot) if the weather turns, someone gets hurt, or a volcano erupts. Usually though, changes make it all the better.

Shotley Marina is a wonderful place to visit, with or without a boat, offering brilliant facilities and plenty of nice walks in the area, along the rivers Orwell and Stour and a seasonal ferry across to Harwich.
