What is the food like?

Tagine, Morocco

Food in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains is shaped by Amazigh (Berber) traditions and historic trade routes, giving it a distinctive mix of sweet and savory flavors, with staples like tagines, couscous, and pastilles, often spiced with cumin, turmeric, and ginger. While on the trek, your meals will be cooked by the Berber muleteers. The food is fresh and healthy, and will consist of things like bread, jam, cookies, fruit, juice, and coffee for breakfast; salad, tomatoes, carrots, lentils, beans, rice or pasta, and fish for lunch; soup, classic Moroccan tagine, couscous, olives, nuts, and seasonal fruit for dinner.

If you have any dietary requirements, intolerances, or allergies, please check the FAQ below: ‘Can my dietary requirements be catered for on this adventure?’ for specific advice relating to this trip. The availability of foods you may get at home varies in different destinations, so please read the FAQ in full before making your booking to ensure that this trip can accommodate your dietary needs.

What is the accommodation like?

riad
Marrakech

In Marrakech, you'll stay in a beautiful riad—traditional Moroccan houses with an interior garden or courtyard. The exact riad you stay in will be confirmed closer to the time based on availability and group size. All are chosen for their excellent reputation, location, beautiful decor, and welcoming service.

The Atlas Mountains

You'll stay in local Berber homes known as a Gite d'Etape or just gite. Translating roughly as 'staging post,' these gites are home to Berber families who will be your hosts. Amenities are basic, but there's no better way to see the real Morocco.

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room can be booked for an extra charge, see Optional Extras for the price. Please note that this applies only to the nights in Marrakech; it's not available for the Berber gites. We recommend that you request this at the time of booking, as this is subject to availability.

From April to October, daytime temperatures in the valleys are typically warm (77-86°F) but cool off considerably at night, and the higher you go, the cooler it gets. In the winter, daytime temperatures are still warm (50-68°F), but nighttime temperatures can drop below freezing. Afternoon storms are always possible in the Atlas Mountains during the summer months, but typically the winter months are wetter.

It rains a little in the valleys and snows on the peaks for a few days a month in the winter. Still, the amounts are small and generally, they don’t prevent anyone from enjoying the trek. The valleys are still warm and the snow on the high peaks makes the scenery that much more beautiful!

View detailed weather for the area here on Mountain Forecast.

In Marrakech, spring and fall temperatures average 50-77°F, and it rains a small amount (roughly seven days each month). From June to September it gets quite hot in the city, averaging 59-95°F, and it only rains a few days each month. In the height of summer, daytime temperatures in Marrakech have been known to approach 113°F on occasions so please ensure that you come prepared with sun protection, light and airy clothing and electrolytes/rehydration solutions if traveling at this time of year.

I recommend this trip without reservation! I'm a solo traveler and found the group to be made up of adventurous and like-minded people. Our guides were encouraging, patient, organized, and adaptable. The hiking was challenging but manageable and appropriately graded. Stunning views! I thoroughly enjoyed the meals everyday, and the accommodations were modest (as described) and comfortable. This was an ideal holiday because I was physically challenged, learned about a new culture, and was inspired by the landscape and the people I met.

Great Experience

This was my first time doing a solo trip and I could not have asked for a better experience. The guides were informative, kind, and most importantly, supportive and helpful through the hikes. The fitness level was as described and the accommodations were fine - shared rooms but very comfy and WiFi at each Gite! Food was fantastic - the dedicated support group traveling with us served delicious food and gave unique dishes for each meal. Also, tea was always available.

The people, both the Aztat Team and the fellow hikers in my group, stood out the most. Everyone was kind and welcoming and incredibly supportive of the team despite different backgrounds and strength levels. I will definitely be booking another MBA trip soon!

I was really nervous about this trip, as 50+ recently single solo traveller. I was really unsure about travelling alone for the first time in over 30 years and travelling with people I didn’t know but I had nothing to worry about and anyone worried about should be reassured that it will be fine.

Meeting and getting to know the group was easy and we had a wonderful group of people, a mixture of ages and abilities and it was fantastic to get to know them all individually.

MBA was fantastic organisationally giving us all the information we needed by email, setting a WhatsApp up so we could all chat beforehand to get to know each other a little bit made things easier too.

While in Morocco, our guides Hussain and Hassan were unbelievable. Nothing was too much trouble and it appeared as though they were able to make traditional Moroccan experiences appear Just as we took a break, mules passing on a mountain track, goatherds moving the animals onto high ground and Moroccan ladies passing on a mountain pass with bundles of straw for animal feed, the timing was impeccable almost like it had been planned in advance.

I have no idea how the cooks are able to produce such good food sat on a mountain pass, It is absolutely incredible and Morocco can only be described as delicious. Accommodation was basic but fine, the amount of time walking, pace and the difficulty level was to be as expected and the group supported each other along with the guides all the way.

I can’t say a bad word about the whole experience. I had an amazing time. I met some lovely, wonderful people and saw, ate and drink some amazing things. Thank you to both MBA and the group.

As a complete newbie to

As a complete newbie to trekking, I had the most amazing experience. The trek was very well organised. You’ll never go hungry. Great communication and so welcoming. Met the most amazing people, the group, the guides, riad staff, gite staff, cooks, drivers, mules. Such a great privilege to join this family. I would defiantly use Trek Atlas/Much Better Adventures again. I traveled with a friend but would not hesitate to go alone next time. My tips would be: Ask lots of questions and you’ll get to know much more about what you’re seeing. Check the fitness level of the trip as you will be pushed if you want to. Use poles as they really helped me as I do not like heights but I made to 2700 FT. Nights can be cold so hot water bottle was a great choice. And travel as light weight as you can as lots of packing and unpacking. It’s very basic and I loved it. (Great WiFi at each gite) Snacks can be bought locally before you begin if you have time as the riad is in a great location in Marrakech to walk to shops etc.

Absolutely fantastic adventure

We had such a brilliant time on this trip. We were a group of of 14 (one couple, two pairs of friends, 8 solo travellers) and were so well looked after by our guides Hussein and Hassan. Everything ran completely smoothly, leaving us to enjoy exploring the beautiful Atlas Mountains. Gorgeous views, incredible weather, beautiful mountain passes and great chats with the rest of the group. The accommodation is simple but the food is great - delicious lunches on the trails and a feast every evening in the gites. The difficulty level was about what we expected - a decent level of fitness helps to enjoy it more, I think, but our guides were so kind and supportive in making sure everyone was welcome. We've all been looking up our next MBA trip already - we're hungry for more! This is a fantastic trip, hugely recommended.

Our super guides Lashan and Mohammed did a great job adapting our itinerary due to heavy snowfall.

Stunning scenery, authentic accommodation, great meals - even hot food prepared on the mountains every lunchtime…felt really well looked after by our team - 2 guides, cook, muleteers. We even had our very muddy hiking boots brushed clean by the guys. They carried huge bottles of mineral water for us on the mules and toilet paper - worth taking your own paper too.

Highly recommend, came back literally buzzing from this trip. Also struck lucky with a lovely bunch of people to say goodbye to 2025 and see in the new year.

Tip : take layers of warm clothing -the local company’s kit list is explicit - especially for the nights. The authentic accommodation is very cold which can be a real surprise, for me personally that ended up being part of the unique experience, however be prepared to sleep in your hat, lots of layers and shower - or not 😉 - in cold water. Sleeping bags and thick blankets are provided. My own silk sleeping bag layer was useful.

A rain poncho could prove useful in the day too, we started off in pouring rain, plus of course sunscreen. If your overnight rucksack - as opposed to day pack - which will be carried by mules is waterproof that is a plus and have a waterproof cover for your day pack.

I found the hiking pace moderate as indicated, however as always on these trips the fitter you are the more you will get out of it. I took my own hiking poles, but they were provided.

The Riad in Marrakech was ideally situated, transfers to and from airport went according to plan and staff more than happy to help with anything. Breakfast was copious.

SUNIL G.(January 2026)
Another great trip

My second MBA trip didn't disappoint - the hiking was incredible, food was amazing and the group dynamic was great.

I give 4* because the accomodation was basic and FREEZING cold. The website does not adequately prepare you for how cold you will be all week - it was a marginal improvement vs camping where there was no heating or hot water to shower with outside of Marrakech. Also, the guides were great for hiking but it would have been nice to have learnt about Moroccan history, culture etc but this was not their remit

A great trip all in all.

Both our guides Lashan and Mohamed were brilliant and made the experience for the whole group. Friendly, knowledgable, caring and most of all a great sense of humour!

All of the staff involved from drivers, riad staff, cooks, muleteers were exceptional. They all looked after us so well and made sure we were as comfortable as we could be.

The trek itself was great, we had great weather mostly but also started with half a day of rain just to set us up!

The trek is rated moderate and that description is perfect, not easy, but a little challenging at times and a reasonable level of fitness required. Given the time of year and altitude it was cold, particularly at night. A word of warning for travelers there is no heating in the gites, literally none, in most it was colder inside than out so be prepared. You need enough warm layers at night. Having said that the sleeping bags provided were suitable for the conditions and the blankets in the gites did the job. During the day when it has warmed up a bit we were able to trek in t-shirts so you really do need layers.

Loved this trip, and highly recommend at this time of year - just be prepared for the cold so you can enjoy the experience.

Lovely few days of hiking!

A great few days at the very end of November / early December that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend. We were lucky enough to have wonderful group of people, fabulous guides (thank you Mohammad and Hassan), excellent organisation and delightfully quiet hiking - it wasn't until our last day that we even saw any other hikers!

The food was good throughout, the accommodation was basic but did the job and everywhere had hot water for showers, which was welcome.

My two recommendations would be - take your own all-season sleeping bag if you're going in the winter and also we had some unexpected snowfall that left a good few inches on the ground so those going at this time of year may want to consider proper winter hiking boots.

This was a great albeit crazy trip. Right before Christmas, the Atlas Mountains received an unprecedented snowfall days 2-3 of our hike. Our guides expertly followed the storm and adjusted the trip as necessary. While I was sorta sad to have missed out on some of the hiking, the storm made for a different- and just as great-experience. As far as other details- they were all seamlessly handled as well- airport pick up easy and quick, fabulous meals (sooo much food) prepared by the chefs along the way (including mountainside lunches on the applicable days). Bring layers and be ready for any weather, and a fabulous adventure. Other suggestions: a deck of cards or group game (no WiFi in many of the gites), a downloaded audiobook/podcast, a plug adapter (I found no USB outlets in Morrocco), a poncho (in addition to rain gear)

Fantastic trip!

I absolutely loved this holiday - walking in the Atlas was a real treat - the views were stunning, the guides incredibly knowledgeable and thoughtful, the food was excellent and everything was well thought out. Hot showers in the evening were a treat, and despite traveling at the end of November and temperatures dropping in the evenings, we were more than warm enough in our beds. The company was great too - I travelled with a group of friends but would definitely consider joining a group as a solo traveler. I can't wait to book my next trip!

Eleanor D.(December 2025)
I wish I could do it all again!

Words won't do this trip justice. Everything about this trip was seamless - we roamed across a lot of different terrains (rocky, steep, sloping but all beautiful) supported by a team of fantastic guides. Lunchtime was a real highlight - we would sit in a circle in the sunshine (not too hot or cold at the end of November!) and feast on beautiful salads, pots of lentils or tagine, and hunks of bread. I feel very lucky to have been in a group of likeminded and friendly people.

Thank you.

I absolutely loved this trip. It was a great group of people, all from different backgrounds and personalities and we had such a laugh, as well as some DMCs.

The views were incredible - some of the best hiking I've seen. I went in early December and there was a bit of snow, but the sun was out the whole time and it was so beautiful. It was also quiet - we didn't see any other hikers for days.

The accommodation was very basic and it was cold, so be prepared for that. Bring earplugs, thermals and an easy-going attitude!

The food was fantastic - lots of delicious tagines, veg, beans and lentils.

It was an amazing experience which I'd thoroughly recommend.

This trip was fabulous from start to finish - it was so well organised and a brilliant way to see the Atlas mountains. The group were great, and we were so well looked after by our guides and extremely well catered for by the chefs! The food was amazing and varied, with plenty of mint tea! The walking was incredible, challenging in bits but very enjoyable. Quite a lot of ascent and descent over passes. Spectacular scenery, and accommodation in the mountains was basic but clean and comfortable (warm showers in each place!). The group were just brilliant, we got on very well and the dynamic really worked. First MBA trip and first group trip - would recommend this trip wholeheartedly. Thanks to MBA, Aztat Treks and the rest of the group for such a great time.

Brilliant trip!

I really enjoyed this trip. We were taken to beautiful, remote and quiet corners of the Atlas Mountains. We only saw other trekkers, not part of our group, on our last day. The guides were really lovely and encouraged a great atmosphere. We were very well looked after: the food throughout was very good. The gites were simple, but were made as comfortable as possible - all had a warm shower, a bed with a blanket and sometimes a heater in the main room to keep us warm. I was doing this trip in November. The group got on very well. I would highly recommend.

Perfect trip from start to finish

Everything about this trip exceeded expectations. From booking, where the customer service team went above and beyond fixing a gift certificate issue I had and then fantastic regular communications to ensure I was well prepared for my trip and reassured that I had all the details. Pick-up from the airport was perfectly organized and the riad in Marrakech simple but very clean and welcoming with amazing breakfasts. For the hikes we were in excellent hands with Mustafa the guide in particular - he set the perfect pace for our group of 13 to be challenged but still enjoy the hikes and spectacular scenery. The Berber hospitality in the gites was second to none - they joyfully opened the spaces and shared their cuisine and culture so generously. I am of moderate fitness and found this trip well described as a moderate physical challenge. We were fuelled by the most delicious and abundant picnic lunches I have ever enjoyed - how the chefs manage to do that on top of mountains is a miracle! We went in the second half of November and enjoyed beautiful blue skies every day but it does get very cold at night (under 5C) and on the top of the mountain passes, but then very warm in the sun at the less high altitudes so pack various layers accordingly.

We are suffering from post-holiday blues having got home and will be booking with MBA again. The trip provided not only stunning views of the beautiful Atlas Mountains but an insight into Berber life. The chefs were also brilliant ensuring we ate well in the middle of the mountains. Totally recommend.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 325kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

Absolutely! We recognize that you may want to leave some of the gear you bring to Morocco somewhere safe before you start your trek. When you reach Imlil, you will be able to leave any non-essential items you don’t want to take with you at your local guide's base there.

Your host works with muleteers who collaborate with the local charity Spana (The Society for the Protection of Animals and Nature) on the AMI program (Aid to the Mules of Imlil). The charity provides training, guidance, and incentives to mule owners to encourage and support good care for their animals in all aspects of their working lives. The program also runs a monthly clinic, offering free veterinary care for the animals and distributing humane tack.

Ramadan is expected to take place from February 17 to March 19, 2026. The national holiday of Eid ul-Fitr will follow for 2-3 days. Ramadan is an Islamic festival where the religious do not eat or drink during daylight hours. While this is a really interesting time to travel, especially to witness celebrations where the fast is broken in the evenings, you can expect some business hours will be shortened, alcohol is not permitted during daylight hours, and some restaurants will be closed during this festival period. Activities for local people tend to be limited during the day, and the nights are very active in cities with lots of different foods being sold and consumed. Ramadan will not affect the inclusions on your trip, although you should be aware that dinners will be served after locals break their fast in the evenings.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND Food in Morocco’s Atlas Mountains is shaped by Amazigh (Berber) traditions and historic trade routes, giving it a distinctive mix of sweet and savoury flavours, with staples like tagines, couscous and pastilles, often spiced with cumin, turmeric and ginger. Vegetarian and vegan eating is often possible with vegetable tagines and bean dishes, and dairy-free can be managed by avoiding yoghurt, milk and butter. Coeliac disease and allergy needs can be trickier because bread and couscous are staples and kitchens may share utensils, so it helps to plan ahead with your guide and carry translation cards or safe snacks.

SPECIAL DIETS

Vegetarian Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Moroccan cuisine features plenty of delicious vegetarian-friendly options such as vegetable tagines (often with olives and preserved lemon), couscous topped with seasonal vegetables, lentil or chickpea soups, loubia (white beans in tomato sauce), bissara (fava bean soup/purée), and cooked salads like zaalouk (aubergine and tomato) or taktouka (pepper and tomato), usually served with bread and olives.

Vegan Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Vegan-friendly options include vegetable tagines cooked with olive oil, lentil and bean dishes (such as loubia or bissara), roasted seasonal vegetables, simple tomato-and-cucumber salads, and mezze-style plates of olives, salads and dips such as zaalouk and taktouka made without butter. It’s worth noting that bread, pastries and couscous can sometimes include butter, milk or eggs, so it helps to flag this clearly to your guide and host.

Kosher Fully certified kosher options are limited in Morocco and are mainly found in larger cities such as Casablanca and Marrakech. On this trip in the Atlas Mountains, kosher-supervised kitchens and ingredients may not be available, so vegetarian or vegan meals can be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above, and plan ahead with your guide.

Halal Halal diets can be catered for on this trip, provided your host is made aware in advance. As Morocco is a predominantly Muslim country, most local restaurants, hotels and suppliers prepare food in line with halal norms.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten Free (for Coeliac, please see Allergies section below) Gluten-Free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, options may be more limited compared to those without dietary requirements. While your local hosts will do their best, it’s worth knowing that gluten-free supplies are generally only available in the major cities. In more remote areas, it's harder to source specialist products, so meals will be based on naturally gluten-free dishes rather than substitutes. That said, most standard meals already include several options without gluten, even without special preparation. Please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

Lactose Free Lactose-Free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Many traditional dishes are naturally lactose-free or can easily be prepared without dairy, such as vegetable dishes, couscous, legumes, salads, and mezze based on olive oil rather than yogurt or cheese.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy (including Coeliac disease), please get in touch with our CX team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority.

*Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.
