Key Information
Day 1
Welcome to the Azores

Catch your first glimpse of the beautiful Azores archipelago as you approach Ponta Delgada on the island of Sao Miguel. Depending on your trip date, you'll either transfer downtown to your hotel in Ponta Delgada itself or transfer a half hour along the coast to Vila Franca do Campo. Settle into your accommodation and meet up with your fellow adventurers and guide for a welcome dinner and a chat over the epic trip ahead.
Day 2
Hike to Fogo Lake

Hiking
Kick start your Azores adventure with a hike to Fogo Lake, following epic trails in the wilderness area in the center of Sao Miguel island. Setting off from the north side of the island, you'll enjoy amazing views along the trail towards Vila Franca do Campo on the coast, as well as its famous islet which you'll be kayaking around later in the trip. After an ascent over open pastures, you'll descend down to the lake flanked by high walls of thick, lush vegetation until you reach the water. Enjoy a leisurely picnic lunch by this stunning lake before continuing the hike later in the afternoon. Finish the day with a sundowner on a local beach near your base.
Day 3
E-biking Sete Cidades and coasteering by the Atlantic

Cycling
Coasteering
Sete Cidades is one of the Azores' picture-postcard spots and one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. You'll explore this stunning geological wonder on two wheels as you hop on an e-bike, pedaling along easy dirt tracks to reach a series of epic viewpoints. There's a long ascent where your e-bike will be your aid to reach the highest spots before rolling along a summit rim and a fun descent back down to Sete Cidades village. In the afternoon, you'll hit the coast for a truly wild time of it in the Atlantic Ocean. Your expert guides will take you coasteering along this rugged section of coastline as you navigate the route by swimming, climbing and jumping from cliffs, exploring the ocean and the incredible volcanic rock formations.
Day 4
Kayak to Vila Franca islet and go whale watching

Kayaking
Wildlife Watching
An unforgettable paddle awaits as you hop in a kayak this morning, setting off into the great expanse of the Atlantic bound for the iconic islet of Vila Franca do Campo. The islet is a marine protected area and was formed by a submerged ancient volcano – its flooded crater has formed a semicircle above the ocean's surface. Explore this incredible islet before kayaking back to Sao Miguel to enjoy lunch before a must-do Azores experience: witnessing the huge congregation of ocean giants in the waters around Sao Miguel on a whale watching trip. Settle on board and travel to deeper waters with a marine biologist for company to help with sightings. Sperm whales are a resident species in the Azores; while fin, blue, and sei whales migrate through the Azores and are often possible to spot at various times of the year.
Day 5
Canyoneering, open water swims and an Azorean barbecue

Canyoning
Head into one of Sao Miguel's canyons today: at either Salga or Salto do Cabrito, two of the most beautiful places on the island and the scene for another amazing few hours of adventure. Spend the morning exploring streams, natural pools and waterfalls using different canyoneering techniques, such as jumps (optional), rappels, and natural water slides. Dry off and enjoy lunch before heading to the northeast corner of the island, creatively called 'Nordeste'. Here you reach your camp area in a beautiful spot with a nice stream nearby. With camp already set up by your guides, head off to explore the village of Nordeste to perhaps grab a swim in the local harbor, or feel free to relax at camp. This evening your guides are laying on a special Azorean barbecue to tuck into around the campfire, before a night under canvas.
Day 6
Secret sunrise spot, hike to waterfalls and nighttime hot springs

Hiking
Embrace an early start today to catch sunrise in one of the best spots on the island at Ponta da Madrugada, waiting for the light to hit the dramatic coastline to kickstart another day in this beautiful archipelago. Grab breakfast in your host's favorite coffee shop nearby, before bidding farewell to Nordeste. Today you're tackling another hike, this time through Faial da Terra. You'll set off from the small village on the south coast and into the forested valley, bound for two stunning waterfalls: Salto do Cagarrão and Salto do Prego. Reaching each one you can spend some time taking in the spectacle and grab a wild swim (brace yourself, the water is very fresh!). Continue on to Sanguinho, a small rural village where the hike ends. Hop back in the van and head to your final base of the trip at Furnas. This is in the heart of the most active volcanic region of the Azores, home to over 30 geothermal pools and geysers dotted around the Furnas Valley. After settling into your beautiful hotel, you'll have the chance to head off to a nearby hot spring for a relaxing soak in the naturally thermal waters.
Day 7
Exploring Furnas

On your final full day of the trip, it's time to explore the Furnas Valley more deeply, hiking along a network of trails to reach fumaroles, geysers, and hot springs and taking in the forested hillside backdrop. This evening your host will take you to a local restaurant for a farewell dinner of local Azorean specialties.
Day 8
Adeus to the Azores

Enjoy a final breakfast on the Azores before heading back to the airport in Ponta Delgada in time for your flight home.

Your host will meet you on arrival at Ponta Delgada Airport on Day 1 to start your adventure. On Day 8, your host will drop you back at the airport in time for your onward flight. If you plan to extend your trip and arrive or depart outside of these days, your host can arrange airport transfers for an extra cost.
Travel options
There are regular flights to Ponta Delgada Airport from airports across the UK and Europe, while North American travellers can fly direct from New York, Boston, Montreal and Toronto. Lisbon is a common transit point if your flight route does not have direct options to Ponta Delgada. UK travellers: please note that low-cost carriers such as Ryanair (who offer direct routes from London to Ponta Delgada) release their flights less far in advance than the likes of TAP Portugal. If you are searching eight months or more ahead for flights, you may see the TAP flights via Lisbon but not the Ryanair direct options. In this case, you can wait until the Ryanair flights are released in order to book the direct flight option.

This trip has been rated as Easy
This trip is all about a fun mindset rather than needing any previous experience or a high level of fitness. You just need to enjoy being active for a large part of the day, in an outdoor environment with some moments of adventure and adrenaline. The canyoneering and coasteering on the trip don't require any huge fitness levels or prior experience, but a fondness for getting wet will help! Your expert guides are there to help on any sections where you might feel less confident.
What if i need to skip an activity?
You are welcome to skip any activity at any stage of this journey.
What will I need to carry?
Your main luggage will be transported for you throughout the trip and can remain in your hotel room whenever you are out and about doing activities. You'll just need a daypack of 20-30 liters to carry water, snacks and waterproofs each day.
Being surrounded by a vast expanse of sea and influenced by the warm Gulf Stream gives the Azores a mild climate that's pleasant year-round with relatively small temperature variations.
April can be somewhat unpredictable, with a mix of sunny and cloudy days and chances of rain. Temperatures are 55°F to 64°F and the ocean is still cool, with water temperatures around 61-63°F.
May and June warm up a little with temperatures from 57°F to 72°F and less rainfall. The sea warms up to 66°F.
September and October are two of the best months to visit the Azores. The weather is typically sunny and warm, with relatively low chances of rain. The sea is at its warmest, around 73-75°F, perfect for swimming and other water activities. In October, things start to cool a little, with more chance of rain.

A great way to see the island
A great trip, well organised and fabulous guides. Nice to be able to do various activities and offers various ways of seeing and experiencing the island. The pace of the activities were very relaxed - nice for those less confident or experienced but for those wanting a faster pace/ more challenging trip then may not be for you. Some tips for packing: bring a quick dry / micro fibre poncho for getting changed in public areas & sturdy sandals for walking over volcanic rock to hot springs.
A unique island adventure!
This trip was my second with MBA and a very memorable one! It was an active week packed with several hikes, biking, kayaking, whale watching, canyoning and coasteering. I found it was a bit more challenging physically than I expected and we had to factor in the unpredictable weather but it was manageable in the end. We had the most dedicated guides who went above and beyond to give us the most enjoyable experience. The scenery was incredible, we had a great group, and I’m already thinking about traveling again with MBA next year.

Completely epic
This trip was action packed. The island is incredible, so much to do and see and all a short drive away! The team from fun activities Azores worked so hard to adjust what we did to make the best of the changeable weather. They communicated clearly throughout and gave us choices. They also surprised us with a fancy lunch and taught us about Azorean culture and history. Do not hesitate to book this trip! I’m planning on returning.
great experience despite bad weather.
great experience despite bad weather. The guides really did their utmost to adapt the itinerary to accommodate. i only have some constructive criticism to make the trip even better;
- splitting the group from 12 to 6+6 would help across the majority of activities given those with more confidence/skills a little more freedom and those with less, more time to develop skills in a safe environment - without 11 other people looking on, even with best intentions at heart - this creates added nerves for some i. e. coasteering jumps with the added 'peer' pressure.
- more time to walk round the lake in Furnas rather than a jump on/off bus tour. Give more choice to those who fancied stretching legs.
- ebikes - starting with flat and then building to hills up and down, again to gain confidence.
- weather hampered the hike one day and the decision was made to drive the group to the top of the peak, rather than hiking in the rain. i think that 90% of the group would of happily hiked; good intention meant, but perhaps allowing the group to decide.
- more time at canyoning - as we only really did one slide, one rappel, one zip and 3 jumps. i think most people would have enjoyed doing it all again, and in smaller sub-groups, so you didn't get cold waiting your turn
- Hikes were easy (easier than i expected if you have a general fitness) and could have been a little more adventurous, whilst the trees/riverside / waterfall were beautiful, it was a little crowded with tourists. We had probably been spoilt by the fact people on other days/activities to make this more pronounced.
- the whale watching - give choices to the group re big boat or smaller rib. . pros and cons to each, i did both, and thought rib more fun. safety focused, well organised , engagement, participation, welcoming - all of this!!! would recommend noting easy; with any challenge largely being within yourself re lack of experience in an activity, fear of water/heights. the team really encouraged everyone despite this

Fantastic week
I had such a good time on this trip. Yes the weather was iffy, but the guides changed the activities around at the drop of a hat so we always took advantage of good weather windows and did wet activities in the wet. Teresa, Riccardo and Daniella were fantastic. Pack a down jacket and lots of leggings as well as shorts.

Fun activities in the rain
The main team worked tirelessly to provide a real Azores adventure. They showed us hidden gems and communicated well throughout. Activities were loads of fun and not too hard yet exhilarating! Take heaps of warm, weatherproof wear. Book Porta Delgata restaurants in advance or plan to eat grab and go (while the provided suggestions were lovely, several restaurants turned four of us away before we ate outside - a chilly but bonding experience). Hotels were clean and basic (Furnas’ stay was much brighter). One canyoning guide was more interested in taking pictures badly than safety, which was unfortunate for my ankle. However, I’m thankful that I got to explore and have fun with a wonderful crew!

An Unforgettable Azorean Adventure!
This trip was nothing short of spectacular—from the breathtaking coastal views and lush forests to the charming, picturesque towns, every moment felt like a postcard come to life. The itinerary struck the perfect balance between high-energy adventure and relaxed exploration. Thrill-seekers will love the canyoning, coasteering, biking, and hiking, while those looking to unwind will enjoy scenic walks, peaceful whale watching, and serene nights of camping. The local cuisine was delicious throughout, and the guides truly made the experience—knowledgeable, kind, and always up for a laugh. An incredible way to discover the magic of the Azores!

A week in Azores
We had a lovely activity week in the Azores. The island is beautiful and offers a great setting as a perfect outdoor playground.
We loved all the activities. Nothing too challenging but plenty of variety and lots of fun. Exactly what was described. The guides were great, the equipment was in good nick and the mini buses good.
Accommodation and food was ok. Nothing fancy but the hotel locations and views were perfect. The overnight camp was good fun too. Great bbq in the evening and a delicious breakfast in a local cafe the next morning. We were hoping for a fun loving activity week with a bit of time to relax in the sun and that's exactly what we got. 5 stars.
Well organized different activities
I had quite a few much adventure tours, usually with one or two types of activities. This one definitely caught my eyes simply because of all 6 different activates. After having been on this amazing tour, I can tell it was not a boast. The activities are not just scrambled. They are very well organized. Each activity had a reasonable length and difficulty level. If you love all these activities, the tour offers the full-scale satisfaction.
The host also match the number of participants and difficulty level with the right number of guides. So the participants feel very safe and well guided. They host is well equipped, not just the necessary activities equipment, but also the video/photo devices. It is always such a sweet memory to look at these exciting moments afterwards. The guides are really nice and friendly. We had a great time together.
Besides the activities, the chosen base sites are well thought through. We were based in Vila Franca, Nordeste and Furnas. Those spots are really beautiful. In Nordest, we had camping. The camping site is really "luxury" in my standard. All the tents, mattress, sleeping bags, even pillows are already prepared neat and clean. The camping site even cooked great BBQ for us.
The difficult rating is easy. I'm a regularly trained person with a handful outdoor experience and used to be amateur athlete. I would say I'm within 10% percentile physical level among all ages considered. I would say the difficult rating might be medium to most people.
All in all, the tour is a great experience and leave me one of the best experiences with much better adventures. Thanks for the great job!
Activity filled, shame about the rain!
Plenty of activities in beautiful location!
Views were compromised by the weather on first few days - make sure to bring waterproofs but we saw whales, dolphins and sun and steam on the last few days. Final meal and hotel was fabulous, earlier ones not as good. Lovely attentive guides.
Love at first site
It was a perfect way to get a taster of all the wonderful things the Azores can offer. Completely fell in love with the place - already planning a return trip to see all the other islands!

Great adventure in the Azores!
Azores islands are full of beautiful scenery and there was a lot of fun activities that we did together as a group! Highly recommend this trip 😇 it’s not very hard in terms of fitness requirements and the local guides did a great job as well

Azores fun !
Well balanced trip ! We were kept busy and had fabulous guides for all activities! Could recharge batteries , see the island and experience a range of actiivities and moderate hikes. Met a great group of people and tried loads of excellent activitites. My favourite was the day of canyoning!

Really fun activities in a beautiful place
This was a great trip! The Azores are stunningly beautiful, from volcano top down to the ocean. The people are wonderful, food and wine delicious, and a very clean and safe place. The range of activities was varied and enjoyable. The coasteering and canyoning were fun for the more experienced and complete beginners alike, especially under the care and leadership of the fantastic guides. I loved the hiking, especially the days with an opportunity to swim in the waterfalls. Overall, the trip is rated as easy and I think that is fair. Nothing was too challenging or inappropriate for novices. A basic level of fitness to be able to walk up hill for 6km is all. My additional recommendations for the packing list: earplugs for camping as the wildlife is "enthusiastic" at night; sandals for some of the easier, flat hikes; a towel poncho for post-water activities to help get changed and stay warm; power bank for your phone - you'll take a lot of pictures and videos! FYI check trip advisor reviews of the different hotsprings. We found the one within the botanical gardens to be better than the ones open later into the evening. And I enjoyed using some of my free time to get a cab to Ponta Delgada to explore, shop and enjoy the cafes. Also stop at a supermarket before camping so you have snacks and refreshments.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 183kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
Your host is a true Azores specialist, with many years of experience operating a variety of activities on all parts of Sao Miguel. They use their knowledge and experience of adventure activities on the island to carefully manage each trip, tracking the weather and ocean conditions to check whether activities can go ahead. This trip has a variety of activities in different parts of the island, so the itinerary is subject to some reordering depending on weather conditions, if required. For example, if sea conditions are great at the start of the trip, but forecast to be poor later on, you will do the kayak trip to islet Vila Franca earlier than planned.
You'll have a tour leader throughout the trip as your main guide, plus additional activity guides will join the group at various stages throughout the trip as you enjoy the variety of activities on this adventure.
Your luggage can be safely left in your hotels while you're away doing activities. You'll just need a daypack and/or dry bag for the daytime.
Tap water in the Azores is completely safe to drink, so you can fill your bottles up at the hotel and at various points throughout the trip. Your guides will factor in water refill spots during the hikes and activities.
This trip takes place in environments where wild animals are present in their natural habitat, where protections and controls on their movement may be limited or non-existent. Some species may be dangerous, venomous, or unpredictable. Sightings are a privilege – but safety is key. Always follow your guide’s instructions and any posted signage.
We recommend considering your comfort around wildlife and discussing any concerns with your host before travel, particularly if you have allergies, phobias, or related health conditions.
