Key Information
Day 1
Welcome to Sri Lanka

Ayubowan! Your Sri Lankan journey begins in Negombo, a vibrant coastal town just a short drive from the airport in Colombo. On arrival, meet your host for your transfer to Jetwing Blue – the ideal spot to rest and reset after your travels. This contemporary beachfront hotel has direct access to the dazzling Indian Ocean, as well as two beautiful pools and a relaxing spa. Spend the afternoon relaxing at your own pace, and later meet up with your guide and fellow travelers for a welcome briefing. If time and energy allow, enjoy a gentle stroll along Negombo’s lively beach road for a glimpse of local life.
Day 2
Into the highlands of Kandy

Hiking
Driving
After a relaxed breakfast, you’ll begin your journey inland with a scenic drive to the cooler highlands of Kandy. Your base for the next three nights is Simpson’s Forest, a boutique heritage-style lodge tucked among tea estates and dense forest canopies, just outside Kandy. With sweeping views, characterful rooms, and a serene hill-country setting, it’s a peaceful retreat to unwind in between daily adventures. This afternoon, stretch your legs on the lodge’s Nature Trail – a gentle 2-hour hike which starts right at the lodge. Meandering through lush evergreen forest, a spice plantation scented with cloves and pepper, and a working tea estate, you can try your hand at traditional tea plucking. Along the way, you'll spot plenty of wildflowers, butterflies, and native plants, and drink in the incredible views over forested valleys from a quiet hilltop vantage point. Dinner is not included tonight, but you'll dine a la carte at the hotel’s restaurant – it's a celebrated spot that blends Sri Lankan and international flavors, with a side of panoramic views across the surrounding misty mountains. Expect beautifully prepared, seasonal dishes – a memorable introduction to the region’s culinary richness.
Day 3
Hike through hill country & Tamil villages

Hiking
This morning, pull on your boots and set out on a guided Tamil village walk – a fascinating blend of gentle hiking and cultural immersion through the surrounding Meenawatte Estate. This 3–4 hour trail winds through tea and spice plantations, offering glimpses into daily life in Sri Lanka’s hill country. You’ll begin on a shaded trail of rolling terrain, passing clove trees, pepper vines, and tea bushes before reaching a nearby Tamil village tucked into the hills. Along the way, your local guide will share stories about the region’s agricultural traditions, Tamil heritage, and the rhythms of rural life. While the route includes some gentle climbs and descents, the pace is leisurely to allow you to soak in the views. Back at Simpson’s Forest, you can spend the afternoon unwinding – perhaps with a dip in the pool, a drink on the terrace, or a stroll through the lodge’s peaceful gardens. For those keen to see a little more, you may choose to join your guide for an optional visit to Kandy’s city center (around 45 minutes away). Explore its heritage charm and lakeside setting, browse local shops and markets, or pay a visit to the revered Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic – one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Sri Lanka, said to house a tooth of the Buddha himself.
Day 4
Hike at the foothills of the Knuckles Range

Hiking
Driving
After breakfast, you’ll set off for your next hike – into the foothills of the Knuckles Mountain Range. Your day begins with a scenic one-hour drive from Simpson’s Forest Lodge, followed by a 30-minute tuk tuk ride through winding hill roads to reach the trailhead. The trail leads you deep into remote, rural Sri Lanka, through pine forests, across tea and spice plantations, and along jungle paths beside streams and rushing waterfalls. Then, the landscape shifts, and you'll walk among the rhythms of village life, with farmers tending rice paddies, water buffalo grazing, and children walking home from school. Along the way, you’ll stop at a local home, where you'll be warmly welcomed. Help prepare a traditional lunch over open fire, and share a simple but delicious meal with your hosts, perhaps with a bite of fresh fruit from the garden. Return to the lodge in the afternoon with time to unwind; take a swim in the pool, a quiet drink on the veranda, or simply soak up the views. Today is your final night in Kandy, as tomorrow you’ll set off early for one of Sri Lanka’s most scenic rail journeys through the highlands.
Day 5
Take the train to Ella and relax in the tea hills

Train Ride
After breakfast, you’ll head to Kandy and hop aboard one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic train rides – the laid-back, scenic journey to Ella. Sit back, relax, and watch as the lush landscapes roll by. As you pull into the station at Ella, you’ll continue by road to your base for the next two nights: Anasa Wellness, a chilled hilltop retreat tucked away in the misty forests above Bandarawela. Anasa embraces minimalist design and natural textures – think polished concrete, local stone, and warm timber – and its rooms have large windows and private terraces that open onto sweeping mountain views. The spa and pool make it easy to switch into R&R mode. This evening, you can choose to dine a la carte at Anasa's restaurant, where bold Sri Lankan flavors meet tasty, seasonal ingredients, many sourced from the surrounding gardens.
Day 6
Yoga and a sunset trail to Little Adam’s Peak

Yoga
Hiking
Enjoy a slow morning at your boutique retreat, beginning your day with a rejuvenating yoga session (optional), then tucking into a tasty breakfast. Bask in the mountain views from the pool, unwind at the spa, or simply relax on your balcony surrounded by birdsong and forest – the quiet luxury of Anasa makes it a perfect base to relax before heading back out to explore. In the afternoon, you’ll head to the charming highland town of Ella, known for its lush scenery and laid-back vibe. Stop in at the Nine Arch Bridge, an iconic feat of colonial-era railway architecture, where you might glimpse a train chugging its way through along arches – a picture-perfect moment. Then it’s on to Little Adam’s Peak, one of the region’s most popular short hikes. The trail begins just outside Ella town, with a gradual incline through tea plantations and small villages. It typically takes about 45–60 minutes to reach the summit, which sits at an elevation of around 3,609 ft. The effort is well worth it: at the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over Ella Gap, the surrounding mountains, and the far-reaching southern plains – especially striking at sunset, when the sky turns gold and pink. After your descent, enjoy a free evening in Ella, where you can explore the town’s vibrant cafe scene or try one of the local restaurants for dinner. Later, you’ll return to Anasa for a restful night.
Day 7
Into the wild: safari & luxury camping in Yala

Wildlife Tracking
After breakfast, you’ll leave the highlands behind and make your way to the wild southeastern plains of Yala National Park. Tonight’s home? Ceylon Wild Safaris – a tucked-away jungle camp with just six safari-style tents, each with its own deck, plunge pool, and outdoor shower. It’s the perfect mix of off-the-grid adventure and laid-back luxury. In the afternoon, hop in your private jeep and head out into Yala Block 5 – a quieter corner of the park known for epic wildlife encounters without the crowds. With your expert naturalist guide leading the way, keep your eyes peeled for elephants, sloth bears, crocs, vibrant birdlife – and if you're lucky, a glimpse of the elusive leopard. As the sun sets, return to camp for a relaxed evening under the stars – where a surprise awaits for a special way to round off your day in the wild. Then drift off to sleep in your tent, with the sounds of the jungle all around.
Day 8
Elephants, temples & the Indian Ocean

Hiking
Driving
Rise early for a final bush walk with your naturalist guide – exploring Yala’s wilderness quietly and on foot, spotting animal tracks, birds, and learning how to read the land. After breakfast, begin your journey south to the coast. En route, enjoy an authentic Sri Lanka buffet before stopping at the Udawalawe Elephant Transit Home, a government-run conservation center that rehabilitates orphaned elephant calves and prepares them for life back in the wild. Unlike many elephant attractions in Sri Lanka, this center prioritizes ethical care – touching the elephants is not permitted, nor are performances. You will observe the young elephants from a distance during their scheduled feeding, keeping human contact to a minimum to ensure a smooth reintegration into their natural habitat. Next, make a short detour to Mulkirigala Rock Temple. Often overlooked, you'll climb a series of stone staircases to reach hidden cave shrines, centuries-old frescoes, and large reclining Buddha statues. At the summit, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views over the surrounding jungle and southern plains. In the late afternoon, you'll arrive at Ananya Beach Hotel, your base for the next three nights. This serene hideaway sits on a quiet beach near Tangalle, and our evening is free to unwind – swim in the pool, stroll along the shore, or relax as the sun sinks into the Indian Ocean.
Day 9
Free time in paradise and sunset kayaking

Kayaking
After days of exploration, today is yours to enjoy at your own pace. With no activities scheduled until late afternoon, you’ve earned this chance to slow down and soak up the coastal calm. Lounge by the pool, take a stroll along the quiet beach, or simply relax in the comfort of Ananya Beach Resort – your boutique hideaway with warm Sri Lankan hospitality. As the day mellows, slip into a kayak and paddle out onto the calm waters of a nearby lagoon. Led by a local guide, paddle silently through golden reflections and tangled mangroves. Watch for flashes of color as kingfishers dart by, spot monkeys along the banks, and soak in the quiet magic of dusk settling over the water. It’s a serene way to wind down a day spent by the sea.
Day 10
Ride the waves, plus sunset yoga in Tangalle

Surfing
Yoga
Start your day with an energizing surf lesson at the beautiful and quiet Kudawella Bay. Whether you’re a complete beginner or looking to sharpen your skills, the calm, consistent waves here provide the perfect playground – your expert instructor will tailor the session just for you. After catching some waves, unwind with a leisurely beachside lunch and enjoy some downtime by the pool or treat yourself to a soothing massage at the hotel spa. As the sun begins to dip, roll out your mat for a sunset yoga session. It’s the perfect way to stretch out and reconnect with body and breath, framed by the sound of waves and the soft hues of golden hour. Finally, gather for a special farewell dinner under the stars (weather permitting) at Ananya Beach Resort – a delicious way to toast the end of your unforgettable Sri Lankan adventure.

What is the food like?

Sri Lankan cuisine is a fascinating reflection of the island’s heritage: fresh local produce fused with spices brought to the island over the centuries. Though Sri Lankan food has some similarities with South Indian cuisine, it remains distinctively unique. Contrasting flavors of coconut, chili, curry leaves, cinnamon, and garlic dominate the main dishes, as well as a variety of deep-fried tasty snacks. ‘Rice and curry’ is the Sri Lankan staple, which in reality means a huge variety of curries, dhal, and vegetable dishes, often served with roti-style flatbreads. There is also an abundance of fresh seafood and fish, usually cooked in curries with coconut and fresh herbs. Many hotel restaurants on this trip elevate traditional flavors with gourmet twists and thoughtfully curated a la carte menus, allowing you to pick your favorite dishes when meals are not included. Picnic lunches will be simple yet full of flavor, offering fresh, wholesome ingredients that reflect the local palate – perfect for enjoying the scenery without fuss.
Vegetarians, vegans, and most dietary requirements are well catered for; just speak to your host upon booking.
What is the accommodation like?

Spend your first night in laid-back comfort at Jetwing Blue, located right by the ocean but just minutes from Bandaranaike International Airport. This contemporary beachfront resort offers two swimming pools, a full-service spa, and direct access to golden sands lapped by the Indian Ocean – perfect for unwinding after your flight. The elegant rooms blend modern design with coastal touches, offering sea views, air-conditioning, minibars, TVs, and free WiFi. Jetwing Blue offers a relaxed, upscale welcome for your adventure ahead; you can start your stay with a scenic walk along Negombo’s lively beach road or take advantage of warm hospitality at the resort’s restaurant.

You’ll spend three nights at Simpson’s Forest Lodge, a special hill country retreat nestled just above Kandy amid tea estates and verdant forest canopies. The boutique lodge’s twin-share rooms are warm and inviting, designed with traditional Sri Lankan touches and modern comforts, each offering lovely views of the surrounding hills. Facilities include a stunning infinity pool overlooking misty mountains – ideal for unwinding after your daily adventures – plus a spa, offering relaxing treatments inspired by local wellness traditions. The peaceful gardens and nature trails right on the property invite quiet hikes and moments of calm. Dining at Simpson’s is a real treat, with a restaurant that combines fresh, seasonal Sri Lankan ingredients with international flavors, served in an elegant yet relaxed setting with panoramic views. Whether starting your day with breakfast or enjoying dinner as the sun sets over the hills, the cuisine perfectly complements the lodge’s tranquil ambiance.

Tucked away in the misty highlands above Bandarawela, Anasa Wellness Resort is your peaceful escape from the bustle of Ella. You’ll spend two nights here among cloud forest, soaking up calm and comfort, surrounded by tea estates and fresh mountain air. The resort blends modern design with natural textures – think polished concrete, warm timber, and floor-to-ceiling windows that open onto sweeping valley views. The twin-share rooms are bright, spacious, and thoughtfully designed, with private terraces and all the comforts. Wellness is at the heart of the experience: you can unwind with a massage in the full-service spa, dip into hydrotherapy pools, or stretch out in the yoga pavilion. There’s also a modern gym, squash and tennis courts, and plenty of quiet corners for reading or reflection. Dining is a highlight – at Alwan restaurant, nourishing Sri Lankan dishes are given a refined, contemporary twist, while the Mezze Bar serves up fresh juices, smoothies, and light bites throughout the day.

Yala National Park
Spend a memorable night in leopard territory, on the wild edge of Yala National Park. Ceylon Wild Safaris is an intimate eco-camp offering a crowd-free, conservation-focused safari experience. With just a handful of thoughtfully designed tents, this stylish camp combines comfort, sustainability, and expert guiding in one unforgettable stay. Each air-conditioned canvas tent features a private plunge pool and wooden deck, perfect for relaxing after an afternoon game drive. Inside, you’ll find a king-size bed or twin beds, an en suite bathroom with hot shower and flushing toilet, twin sinks, and details like bathrobes, charging points, mosquito repellent, and ample storage. Dinner is freshly prepared and served in a unique setting, and the camp’s experienced guides – who have backgrounds in wildlife research and conservation – are always on hand to share their knowledge. Ceylon Wild Safaris is deeply committed to sustainable tourism and habitat protection, so your stay also directly supports local conservation efforts. A truly wild yet comfortable night in one of Sri Lanka’s most iconic wildlife zones.

Tangalle
Spend your final three nights of the trip at Ananya Beach Resort, a peaceful, comfortable escape tucked along a pristine stretch of Sri Lanka’s south coast near Tangalle. Set on a long, virtually deserted beach – shared only with a few fishermen and the occasional passing stilt crab – this is a place to truly switch off and unwind. Ananya blends barefoot beach living with thoughtful comfort. Spacious, simply decorated air-conditioned rooms open onto lush gardens or ocean views, while the resort’s minimalist design flows into shaded lounge areas and a serene infinity pool overlooking the Indian Ocean. The vibe is intentionally low-key and peaceful – perfect if you’re after quiet seclusion far from the crowds. There’s a small spa offering Ayurvedic treatments, and the open-air restaurant serves nourishing Sri Lankan-inspired dishes made using local ingredients.
Upgrades
Solo travellers seeking their own space can opt for a private room for an additional charge – see Optional Extras for pricing, and request this when booking. Please note that due to the small size of some of the properties, availability is limited and the private room option is only available for nine nights of the trip: at Ceylon Wild Safaris, accommodation will be in twin-share tents only, as the intimate camp setup does not allow for single occupancy.
This trip has been rated as Easy
This trip is designed for travelers with average to good fitness who enjoy a balance of gentle adventure and relaxation. The individual activities are generally easy to moderate. A spirit of adventure and flexibility will enhance your experience, especially during wildlife excursions and local village visits, but overall this trip offers a comfortable and authentic way to connect with Sri Lanka's culture, nature, and beaches.
While hiking, you'll be walking easy to moderate routes lasting between 2 to 4 hours on varied but manageable terrain such as forest trails, rolling hills, and rural paths. You’ll only need to carry a small daypack (to carry essentials like water, snacks, sunscreen, and a camera). No previous yoga or surfing experience is required, as these sessions are tailored for beginners (and are optional). While the distances and pace are generally leisurely, please note that the tropical heat and humidity can sometimes make activities feel more intense than expected. Staying hydrated and pacing yourself will help you enjoy every experience comfortably.
The itinerary includes three longer drives of up to 4 hours and a scenic train journey lasting 5-6 hours, all of which provide plenty of opportunity to relax and enjoy Sri Lanka’s breathtaking landscapes. Most days avoid early starts, giving you a chance to wake up slowly and enjoy breakfast at your own pace. It also includes downtime to unwind in premium accommodations – whether relaxing by infinity pools, indulging in spa treatments, wandering nearby villages, or simply soaking up the tranquil natural surroundings. This balance of activity and leisure makes the trip suitable for those looking to explore Sri Lanka’s diverse beauty without feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
What if i need to skip an activity?
If you've never tried surfing or yoga, we recommend giving these a go on the trip, as instruction will be tailored to first-timers. However, we understand that yoga and surfing are not for everyone, so if you prefer to opt-out from these activities, it's absolutely fine – you can just enjoy some extra leisure time in the jungle or on the tropical beaches.
What will I need to carry?
During the activities, you'll only need to carry a personal daypack containing your essential items. Your main luggage will be transported or stored for you.
This trip is scheduled to run between December and July: generally, favorable times to explore Sri Lanka's central highlands, Yala National Park, and south coast.
The months of February to April typically offer dry, sunny conditions across all regions. May and June fall within the southwest monsoon season, which can bring occasional rain, especially in the highlands and along the coast – but these are often short-lived showers rather than all-day downpours. Yala and the southeast are usually drier, even at this time of year. December marks the start of the dry season again and is a popular time to visit.
Expect warm coastal temperatures of 77–86°F and cooler conditions in the highlands (around 59–68°F). As Sri Lanka’s weather patterns have become less predictable in recent years, it’s best to be prepared for a bit of everything – sunshine, humidity, and possibly the odd tropical downpour. Lightweight waterproofs are strongly recommended.
We’re still waiting to collect any reviews from other travellers on this trip. However, all our hosts go through an extensive vetting process to ensure that your adventure is awesome.

- $30-35 (USD) for your trip leader
- $10-12 (USD) for each member of the bus crew (usually 1 or 2 drivers)

Travel insurance
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate coverage for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and gear, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment coverage, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.
Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travelers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield, both of which offer coverage for a wide range of adventurous activities.
Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.

Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice. To secure your visa (Electronic Travel Authorization, or ETA) apply via the official government website. Usually, the visa is granted within 48 hours of application. Make sure you print a copy or take a screenshot of the approval page for when you clear security on arrival.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 520kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
Tap water in Sri Lanka isn’t always gentle on the stomach. Filtered water is provided at hotels and on the bus, so it’s a good idea to bring a reusable water bottle to refill each morning.
Your main luggage will be stored securely on the bus when you're on the move and you'll have access to it on a daily basis. If there's anything that you don't need with you during the adventure, you can also store excess luggage at your local host's office in Colombo. During the activities, you'll only need to carry a personal daypack with your essential items.
In Knuckles and Kandy, you’ll experience authentic village life, meet friendly locals, and observe traditional farming firsthand. The visits are respectful and immersive, with opportunities to engage in daily activities, offering a genuine cultural connection away from typical tourist paths.
The Elephant Transit Home is a government-run rescue and rehabilitation center for orphaned elephant calves. It prioritizes ethical care – it does not offer riding, touching, or performances. Visitors observe scheduled feedings from a distance, supporting the calves’ smooth transition back to the wild.
Yala Block 5 is known for its rich biodiversity and low visitor numbers – ideal for spotting elephants, mugger crocodiles, sloth bears, and, with luck, Sri Lanka’s elusive leopards. Ceylon Wild Safaris is a low-impact, conservation-minded camp. It runs on solar power, avoids plastic waste, employs expert local naturalists, and contributes to community and habitat preservation projects, ensuring wildlife encounters are both responsible and enriching. Your park permit fees are included in the trip price, and a portion of the entrance fees goes directly to the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC) for the upkeep and conservation of Yala National Park. These funds are used for maintaining the park's infrastructure, protecting wildlife, and supporting conservation programs.

Some species may be dangerous, venomous, or unpredictable. Sightings are a privilege, but safety is key. Always follow your guide’s instructions and any posted signage.
We recommend considering your comfort around wildlife and discussing any concerns with your host before travel, particularly if you have allergies, phobias, or related health conditions.
This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme highs, where limited shade and high humidity can also be a factor. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but hydration, proper clothing, and sun protection are essential.
Before traveling, consider your ability to be active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have concerns, especially if you have any cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two prior to the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).
If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.
For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.
