Key Information

Day 1

Sa-wat dee, welcome to Chiang Rai!

The Legend Chiang Rai.

Your journey begins in the peaceful northern city of Chiang Rai, known for its lush landscapes and welcoming indigenous communities. Many international flights connect through Bangkok directly onto Chiang Rai, while others may require booking a separate domestic flight – giving you the option to spend extra time in the city if you wish. Either way, Chiang Rai is easy to reach and a beautiful place to start your Thailand adventure. Hop into your airport transfer and drive to your home for the next three nights – The Legend Chiang Rai, a stylish boutique hotel that is ideally located for exploring the city. Later in the afternoon, meet your group leader and fellow travelers for an optional orientation tour. Hop on a traditional tricycle and explore the lively night market, sampling delicious street food and browsing local crafts. If you’re arriving later in the evening, feel free to head straight to the hotel to settle in and get a good night’s rest before your adventure begins tomorrow.

Day 2

Iconic temples & rural heartlands by bike

Cycling Chiang Rai countryside, Thailand.

Cycling

2hrs · 16mi · 656ft up · 656ft down

This morning, you’ll be picked up from your hotel to set off on a gentle bike ride through the peaceful countryside around Chiang Rai. After a brief safety briefing and personalized bike fitting, you'll pedal past rice paddies, fruit orchards, rubber plantations, and teak groves – a relaxed and scenic glimpse into rural Thai life. Your first stop is the iconic White Temple (Wat Rong Khun), a dazzling creation by artist Chalermchai Kositpipat. With its shimmering mirrors and surreal details, it’s a striking blend of Buddhist symbolism and contemporary art. After lunch at a nearby local restaurant, transfer by private songthaew to the vivid Blue Temple (Wat Rong Suea Ten) – equally impressive with its rich blue-and-gold design, serene white Buddha, and intricate murals. Back at the hotel, enjoy some downtime or perhaps treat yourself to a relaxing spa treatment. In the evening, gather with your group for a welcome dinner and a taste of northern Thailand’s rich culinary traditions.

Day 3

Jungle trails, hill tribes & thermal baths

Trekking in Chiang Rai.

Hiking

4hrs · 6mi · 1969ft up · 1969ft down

Today's adventure begins with a scenic drive from your hotel into the hills surrounding Chiang Rai. From the trailhead, set off on a rewarding jungle trek through bamboo forests and along quiet paths connecting remote hill tribe villages. Along the way, immerse yourself in the region's natural beauty and get a glimpse into traditional life in the mountains. Around midday, you'll stop in a local village where you'll join a family to help prepare and share a traditional northern Thai lunch – a fun and hands-on affair. In the afternoon, continue your hike to a second village and pay a visit to a hillside tea plantation, where you'll learn how tea is grown and harvested in this part of Thailand. The reward at the end of the day? A refreshing pause at a jungle waterfall, followed by a soothing soak in natural hot springs – the perfect way to round off an epic day. You'll return to your hotel in the late afternoon, with a free evening to relax and reflect on the day's experiences.

Day 4

Dive into Thai cooking, unwind with a massage

Cooking at Ahsa Farmstay.

After a couple of active days exploring northern Thailand’s temples, jungles, and countryside, today is all about slowing down and soaking it all in – you’ve earned a little indulgence. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before heading out to the peaceful Ahsa Farmstay, nestled in the foothills of Doi Mae Salong. You’ll be welcomed with a cup of hot herbal tea before enjoying a guided walk around the farm, where you’ll gather fresh ingredients like herbs, vegetables, and eggs for your cooking session. In a hands-on Thai cooking class, you’ll learn to prepare a selection of traditional regional dishes – from a fiery chili paste to a comforting coconut milk soup, a sweet banana dessert, and a seasonal vegetable stir-fry. After all your hard work in the kitchen, sit down to enjoy the feast you’ve created, served with organic steamed rice, fresh fruit, and tea or coffee. At the farm, you'll also have the chance to enjoy an included herbal steam sauna and turmeric facial mask, followed by a full-body Thai massage using fragrant herbal oils. This afternoon, continue your journey to the luxurious Katiliya Mountain Resort & Spa, perched high in the hills with sweeping views over the valleys below. You'll end the day with a sumptuous dinner – the perfect end to a day devoted to culture, cuisine, and calm.

Midway, stop at an Akha hill tribe village, where you'll be welcomed by the local community for a traditional home-cooked lunch. In the afternoon, continue the journey to the peaceful and remote town of Chiang Dao – an authentic spot that remains largely untouched by mass tourism. Nestled at the foot of the towering Doi Luang Chiang Dao (northern Thailand's third-highest peak), Chiang Dao offers a serene atmosphere with uncrowded streets and stunning natural beauty. Here, you'll explore the incredible Chiang Dao Cave system. Accompanied by a local ranger and lanterns, you'll venture into both the illuminated chambers and the darker recesses of the cave, discovering dramatic limestone formations and centuries-old Buddhist shrines tucked within this sacred site. The trail leads to Pong Ngan Lahu Village, a peaceful riverside community beside the Mae Taeng River. After enjoying a leisurely lunch in this tranquil setting, prepare to hit the water on kayaks. Paddle gently downstream for about 1.5–2 hours, following the verdant riverbanks as they wind towards Sop Kai Village. Enjoy a peaceful visit surrounded by lush greenery before a private van takes you higher up the mountain to the iconic Wat Phra That Doi Suthep. Climb the famous 306-step Naga staircase, adorned with intricately carved serpent railings, to reach the gleaming golden chedi and a panoramic terrace with special views over Chiang Mai below. Next, descend on foot through Doi Suthep-Pui National Park, along shaded forest trails to the refreshing Montha Than Waterfall – a perfect spot to pause for a dip. After your hike, enjoy a well-earned lunch at a local restaurant before spending a leisurely afternoon relaxing or exploring Chiang Mai at your own pace. This evening, indulge in a special chef’s table experience at Chef TuTu. Set in a cozy, greenery-filled home in Chiang Mai, this intimate restaurant offers just a handful of tables – making it feel more like dining in a friend’s kitchen than a traditional eatery.

Unlike more touristy spots, this island remains peaceful and laid-back, with charming fishing villages, quiet beaches, and lush mangroves waiting to be explored. You’ll spend the next three nights at the elegant Cape Kudu Hotel, a stylish beachfront retreat oozing with island tranquility. After settling in, the rest of your day is yours to enjoy however you please – whether it’s unwinding at the spa, wandering along powder-soft beaches or simply enjoying the vibes by the pool.

Midday, enjoy a delicious onshore lunch surrounded by stunning views, before setting off again for more paddling. After a day of exploring nature’s wild side, head back to your resort on Koh Yao Noi, feeling wowed by the bay's laid-back magic.

Think hidden coves, towering limestone cliffs, powdery white beaches, and crystal-clear waters. Each island has its own vibe, and there's plenty of time to explore, swim, or just kick back in the sun. A tasty lunch is served beachside to keep you fueled for the day. After soaking up the last rays and salty breeze, you'll head back to Koh Yao Noi to relax, before coming together in the evening for one final dinner – sunset views, cold drinks, and great company to wrap up this unforgettable Thai adventure.

Koh Yao Noi, Thailand.

Alternatively, you may choose to extend your adventure, spending an extra night or two in Phuket.

Transfers

On Day 1, arrive in Chiang Rai at any time – a transfer from Chiang Rai Airport to your hotel is included when you arrive, provided you have supplied your flight details in advance. We do recommend arriving before 4:00 PM, in order to fully enjoy the hotel facilities and explore the town in the evening, together with your group and your guide. Please note that hotel check-in may not be available until mid-afternoon; but contact your local host if you wish to request an early check-in (subject to availability and fees).

At the end of your trip on Day 11, you will be transferred from your lodging on Koh Yao Noi to Phuket International Airport via a semi-private group transfer (includes a ferry journey as well as ground transfers). The transfers run at set times, depending on the season:

  • November 1–April 15, 2026: (11:00/2:00 PM/4:00 PM)
  • April 16–October 31, 2026: 11:00/4:00 PM)

The earliest you can reach Phuket Airport when taking the first scheduled boat from Koh Yao Noi is around 1:00–2:00 PM, so we recommend booking flights departing no earlier than 6:00 PM. Here’s the breakdown: you'll travel by local songthaew, then by boat from the pier in Koh Yao Noi to the pier in Phuket (which takes approximately 30–40 minutes). A private minivan transfer from here to Phuket International Airport takes around an hour, but is weather and traffic dependent. This brings your total travel time to 2–3 hours, so to allow a stress-free connection, aim for flights departing after 6:00 PM from Phuket Airport. Your host will inform you of your allocated transfer time in advance, based on your flight schedule. If you prefer a more relaxed departure, you can consider booking an additional night in Phuket independently, flying out the following day.

If you would like to arrive early or extend your stay, your host can arrange private airport transfers and additional lodging for an extra cost. See the Optional Extras section for details.

Travel options

There are no direct international flights to Chiang Rai from most European or US cities, but it’s easily accessible via a short domestic flight from Bangkok. If you’re flying internationally to start the trip in Chiang Rai, the easiest and smoothest option is to book a single ticket all the way through from your home airport to Chiang Rai (CEI) via Bangkok (BKK). This means your luggage is checked through and you’re protected in case of delays. The main airlines that offer this on one ticket are Thai Airways and Bangkok Airways (often used as a partner airline on single tickets with bigger international carriers). Even if you’re flying with airlines like Qatar Airways, Emirates, Lufthansa, or Singapore Airlines, you can often book a full journey to Chiang Rai on one ticket using their partners. Please check with the airline directly. If you wish to extend your trip in Thailand and visit Bangkok before this trip, you can consider booking your international flight to Bangkok (with plenty of direct connections worldwide), and then booking a separate domestic leg with local carriers.

On the return, you’ll depart from Phuket International Airport, which offers both domestic and international connections. While there are some direct flights to regional hubs, most long-haul routes from Phuket to the UK, Europe, or the US involve one stop. Indirect flights from the UK and major European cities typically transit through hubs such as Doha, Singapore, Hong Kong, Helsinki, or Bangkok. To the US, flights usually connect via Seoul, Tokyo (Narita or Haneda), Manila, Istanbul, Doha, or Dubai, depending on your route.

What is the food like?

Green Curry Thailand.

Thai food is one of the world’s most-loved cuisines, known for its vibrant balance of sweet, sour, salty, and spicy flavors, with aromatic herbs like Thai basil and lemongrass. On this trip, you’ll enjoy a diverse culinary journey – from Northern Thai specialties to fresh island flavors. In Northern Thailand, expect hearty, fragrant dishes such as khao soi (creamy curry noodle soup), smoky grilled meats, and spicy chili dips (nam prik). You’ll even take part in a farmstay cooking class, learning authentic recipes firsthand, and enjoy a special chef-to-table dinner showcasing local ingredients. On the island of Koh Yao Yai, the cuisine reflects the predominantly Muslim population, so pork dishes are rarely served. Instead, fresh seafood and halal-friendly options take center stage. Most meals are included in your trip cost – breakfasts will offer both Western and Thai choices, while lunches and dinners feature a variety of picnic options, local curries, soups (like tom yum), fresh salads, and delicious meat or seafood dishes – giving you the chance to truly savor the regional tastes throughout your adventure.

Vegetarians, vegans and those with other dietary requirements or allergies can be catered for – please just request this on your passenger info form.

Upgrades

This trip has been rated as Easy

This trip is active throughout but the itinerary is balanced, with plenty of chances to take it easy. No special skills or previous experience are needed. Downtime is built in to this adventure, allowing you to chill out and enjoy the amazing premium hotels and resorts – many of which offer spa treatments and other luxury extras to help you relax.

You’ll be hiking for about 2 to 3 hours at a time, trekking through jungles with some uneven and sometimes muddy paths. However, there are plenty of waterfalls along the way to cool off in and take a break. When visiting temples, expect some steps to climb – a reasonable level of fitness helps to enjoy it fully.

Cycling around Chiang Rai is leisurely, mostly flat with stops to take in the sights, so no technical cycling skills are needed but you must be comfortable on two wheels.

The kayaking adventures on rivers and on the sea are a highlight. You’ll get a safety briefing to ensure that you feel comfortable, so it's suitable for any first-time paddlers.

Getting around includes a few longer drives, plus one internal flight. However, the travel days are spread out, so you won’t have to deal with back-to-back long travel days.

What if i need to skip an activity?

If you prefer to skip an activity, no worries! The trip is designed with flexibility in mind. Just let your guides know ahead of time, and if possible they’ll help you adjust the day so you can still enjoy the experience at your own pace without missing out on the highlights.

What will I need to carry?

You'll just need a small daypack to carry personal items, snacks, and water during daily activities and explorations. Your main luggage will be transported for you throughout the trip (we recommend packing light and keeping your main luggage under 44 lbs, which is the maximum allowance for the included internal flight).

This trip runs between October and May, offering ideal conditions to explore both northern and southern Thailand.

In Northern Thailand (Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Mae Taeng, and surrounding areas), you can expect mostly dry and comfortable weather during these months. Daytime temperatures typically range from 77–91°F with cooler evenings; great for trekking, cycling, and cultural exploration. October marks the end of the rainy season, so the landscapes are lush and vibrant. By March and April, temperatures can rise significantly – sometimes peaking above 95°F – so be prepared for very hot conditions toward the end of the season.

In the south (Phang Nga Bay and Koh Yao Noi), the dry season runs from November to April, bringing sunny skies, warm seas, and gentle breezes. Temperatures typically sit between 79–90°F, ideal for kayaking, island hopping, and beach time. Occasional short showers may occur in May or October, but they’re usually brief and won’t disrupt activities.

Please note: Between February and April, northern Thailand may experience periods of haze or reduced air quality due to agricultural burning. While our trips have not been affected in the past, conditions can vary year to year. Our local team monitors the situation closely and will adjust plans if needed to ensure a smooth experience. We recommend packing a mask for outdoor activities, particularly if you have asthma, allergies, or other respiratory sensitivities. If you’re concerned, you may prefer to book outside this window.

This trip is brand new

Meals

Six dinners and one lunch are not included in the cost of this trip. This allows you to enjoy greater flexibility and explore local dining options at your own pace, especially in Chiang Rai and Chiang Mai. We recommend budgeting about USD100-150 in total to cover these meals (excluding drinks).

Tips

While tipping in Thailand is not mandatory, it’s a meaningful way to show appreciation for good service. For this trip, we recommend the following:

-THB 150 – 250 (USD 5-7) per person per day for the main tour leader, based on the level of service and overall experience. -Tipping Kitty: We suggest collecting approx. THB 1,500 per person (USD 45) for the entire program. This will cover tips for local guides, drivers, and other support staff throughout the trip.

Please avoid tipping with coins, very small denomination notes, or dirty and ripped notes; culturally, this is regarded as an insult. Of course, you are free to tip more or less, and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality – a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate coverage for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and gear, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment coverage, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.

Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travelers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield, both of which offer coverage for a wide range of adventurous activities.

Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.

Visas

Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry.

It works out on average at 752kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

Yes, a domestic flight from Chiang Mai to Phuket is included in the trip price and will be booked by your host once the trip departure is guaranteed to run. Flights are usually with airlines such as AirAsia or VietJet, typically scheduled for late morning or around noon.

Because these flights are booked early to secure group travel, a portion of your deposit becomes non-refundable after booking (unless the trip is canceled by us or your host, due to unforeseen circumstances). We recommend booking early to ensure you fly on the allocated group flight. If the group flight is full at the time of your booking, your host will inform you of alternative travel options. In such cases, you may travel on a different flight and arrive at the island earlier or later than the main group.

Tap water in Thailand is not safe to drink. Clean drinking water will be provided throughout, so please pack your own reusable bottle – it will be well used. There will be a large drinking water container provided on the vehicles for you to refill your bottle with.

Yes – burning season in northern Thailand typically occurs between February and April each year. During this time, agricultural burning in the region can cause haze and reduced air quality. The intensity varies each year depending on weather conditions, wind, and government controls. We understand this might be a concern, so here’s what you need to know:

  • Our experienced local teams monitor the situation closely and will provide updates as needed.
  • If any area is closed for safety or conservation reasons (such as sections of Doi Suthep–Pui National Park), we’ll adjust the itinerary and provide a similar alternative activity – you’ll still get the full adventure experience.
  • Bring a mask, just in case. While many guests don’t find the smoke disruptive, we recommend packing a mask for outdoor activities. This is a precaution we suggest purely to ensure your comfort.

We remain hopeful that air quality will continue to improve in the coming years, thanks to local and government efforts. Most importantly, previous travelers have continued to enjoy their trips during this season without issues.

This trip is scheduled to run from October to April to make the most of Thailand’s drier, cooler months – avoiding the peak of the monsoon season and extreme summer heat. However, due to the effects of climate change, weather patterns can occasionally be unpredictable, so it’s always best to come prepared for a mix of conditions. Minor changes to the route, order, or timing of the activities may be necessary once you’re on the trip. Your host will ensure any changes, if necessary, are kept to a minimum, and your guide will keep you in the loop as the trip progresses to ensure that you have an awesome time.

Due to the point-to-point nature of this trip, your luggage will travel with you throughout the journey. Please note that for the included domestic flight, a checked baggage allowance of 44 lbs applies. Be sure to pack accordingly to avoid excess baggage fees.

The kayaks used will be sit-on-top kayaks, all of which will be doubles. Sit-on-top kayaks are very stable and easy to paddle for everyone, from new paddlers through to experienced paddlers. Sit-on-top kayaks can be used on the sea, estuaries, rivers, lakes, and canals.

In both Mae Taeng and Phang Nga Bay, you’ll be using a mix of tandem inflatable and polyester canoes or kayaks, with an average maximum weight limit of 550 lbs.

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme highs, where limited shade and high humidity can also be a factor. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but hydration, proper clothing, and sun protection are essential.

Before traveling, consider your ability to be active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have concerns, especially if you have any cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two prior to the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).

If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.

For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
