Touch down in Norway’s far north and meet your host at the airport before heading to the remote coastal town of Alta, tucked into the inner reaches of the Altafjord. Settle into your Arctic dome, your Standout Stay of the trip, surrounded by quiet woodland, then join your guides for a welcome briefing. Once you're all set, hop on an electric mountain bike and follow your guide along forest trails beside the Alta River. Expect winding paths, peaceful scenery and plenty of fresh Arctic air. After stretching your legs, head back to base to unwind in the sauna and dig into a three-course dinner made with local ingredients, served in the cozy lounge.

Start your day with a sumptuous Nordic breakfast before heading out to paddle canoes along the calm waters of the Alta River. The river flows through the stunning Alta Canyon, which is the largest in northern Europe at 7 miles long and up to 1,378 feet deep. Pause for a riverside lunch, then head back to base for some downtime before dinner. Later this evening, lace up your boots for a hike to a nearby peak, timed to catch the golden light of the midnight sun. At this latitude, the sun never fully sets in summer, casting a soft, dreamlike glow over the landscape – the perfect backdrop for an unforgettable evening hike.

After a late night chasing the midnight sun, enjoy a slow start with coffee beneath the trees and a relaxed breakfast at base. Then it’s off to Alta Canyon for a fresh perspective on the dramatic landscape. Hike a trail that gradually climbs above the tree line, opening up wide views from the edge of the canyon. There’s a twist to today’s hike, as you’ll be joined by local huskies. These working dogs lead sled adventures in winter, but in summer they love exploring the trails and make brilliant hiking companions. Later, join your host for a fire-cooking masterclass and settle in for dinner in a traditional lavvu tent, swapping stories around the flames.

Today's all about adventure on two wheels, with a full day of e-biking through hidden corners of the surrounding wilderness. The goal? Reach a remote lake that's perfect for a wild swim. Stop for lunch cooked over an open fire, then wrap up the day with a bracing dip in the crystal-clear Arctic water. Back at base, the Singletrack Pub opens its doors and another three-course feast awaits in the lounge.

Say goodbye to your cozy Arctic dome and make the most of your final moments in Alta with a short stroll or one last sauna. Then it’s time to join the group transfer to Alta Airport.

Your host will meet you on arrival at Alta Airport and transfer you to the base, just a short drive away. There will be a welcome briefing at 3:00 PM, followed by your first activity later that afternoon. If you're arriving on one of the flight options from Oslo or Frankfurt that land in the evening, your host will still collect you, but you'll miss the e-biking activity and first dinner on Day 1. We strongly recommend booking a flight that arrives in the morning or early afternoon.

On the final day, your host will transfer you back to Alta Airport in time for onward flights. Most departures are in the early afternoon, and as it’s a small airport, you’ll only need to arrive 90 minutes before departure – leaving a little time in the morning to relax at base.

Travel options

There are no direct flights to Alta from the UK or most European cities, so you'll need to connect via Oslo or Tromsø. The flight from Oslo to Alta takes just over two hours, while the Tromsø route takes around 40 minutes. From late 2025, a new direct route from Frankfurt will offer more options, particularly for travelers connecting with Lufthansa. This is especially useful for those coming from North America, with several direct flights into Frankfurt. Oslo is also accessible via direct flights from New York.

What is the food like?

Tables set inside a traditional Lavvo tent, Alta, Norway.

Breakfast at base is a relaxed, help-yourself setup served in the cozy lounge, with fresh coffee on hand to ease you into the day. Expect a generous continental spread featuring local smoked salmon, crusty bread, regional cheeses, homemade jams, muesli, yogurt, fresh fruit, and cold cuts. Lunches are picnic-style while out exploring, with sandwiches, snacks, hot drinks, and a scenic spot to enjoy it all. On Days 1, 2, and 4, you’ll be treated to a hearty three-course dinner of local cuisine, including specialties such as fresh cod and halibut, salmon, moose, reindeer, and king crab. Dinner on Day 3 is a memorable affair as your host teaches the group about traditional fire cooking methods, finishing with a feast inside a traditional lavvu tent.

Vegetarians, vegans, and other dietary requirements and allergies can be catered for – please just request this on your passenger info form.

What is the accommodation like?

Standout Stay: Cozy Arctic Domes in Norway's Far North

A magical base awaits for your Arctic adventure, with every night spent in an Arctic dome tucked into a pine forest just outside Alta. These purpose-built domes are made from aluminum and canvas, with underfloor heating and a wood-burning stove to keep things cozy. Designed to bring you closer to nature, each dome has a roof panel that opens - perfect for soaking up the soft hues of an Arctic summer, when the light barely fades. All electricity here is 100% renewable, drawn from hydro power generated by the nearby Alta River. You’ll stay in twin-share domes, with couples automatically allocated a private dome. Each one has a connected private toilet, while the showers and sauna are in the main building, a short walk away.

Upgrades

Due to the limited number of Arctic Domes, it is not possible to request a private room upgrade for this trip.

This trip has been rated as Easy

No previous experience is needed for any of the activities, just a basic level of fitness and a sense of adventure. The itinerary is busy to make the most of your time in Alta, but all activities are relaxed and non-technical.

You should be comfortable hiking for up to four hours on varied trails, with some moderate elevation gain and descent. The hikes are easygoing, with plenty of breaks and no long distances.

E-biking and canoeing are suitable for first-timers. An introductory briefing and training will be provided. You’ll need to know how to ride a bike, but no prior e-bike experience is required. The cycling takes place on mostly flat terrain, with regular stops and no technical mountain biking.

The canoeing is on gently flowing water, with no rapids to navigate. For safety reasons, you must be able to swim and feel confident in the water, as the trip includes water-based activities.

What if i need to skip an activity?

You are welcome to skip any activity you like on this trip. The base is there for you to relax in instead.

What will I need to carry?

You'll just need a small daypack of up to 25 liters to carry your personal items and a rain jacket on the days out.

Alta sits well above the Arctic Circle, bringing long summer days and shifting light as the season progresses.

From early June to late July, the midnight sun means 24 hours of daylight. Temperatures range from 46–59°F, with crisp mornings and mild afternoons. Rivers run high from the snowmelt, ideal for canoeing.

July and August are the warmest months, with average temperatures of 50–63°F and occasional highs around 68°F on sunny days. Wildflowers are in bloom, and it’s a great time for hiking, biking, and swimming. Near-endless daylight continues through early July, gradually giving way to golden twilight by late August.

September brings cooler, quieter conditions with temperatures between 41–50°F. The tundra starts to turn with early autumn colors, and the longer nights may offer a chance to spot the Northern Lights.

Fjord and lake water temperatures sit between 46–54°F - refreshing for a quick dip or ideal in a wetsuit for paddling. Rain is always possible in a Nordic summer and the weather can shift quickly, so pack layers and waterproofs.

Your insurance should offer adequate coverage for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and gear, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment coverage, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.
Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travelers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield, both of which offer coverage for a wide range of adventurous activities.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 43kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

This itinerary is fully flexible, thanks to having a single base and a host who knows the area inside out. If conditions aren't suitable for any of the activities, alternatives will be sourced or the program may be adjusted to do certain activities on certain days to allow for the best combination of conditions.

You'll have a main guide leading the group throughout the trip, and additional guides will join for certain activities such as the E-biking and canoeing.

This trip has a single base, so you can leave your main luggage at your base to stay with you throughout the adventure.

The water in this part of Norway is perfectly safe to drink. You can fill up at your base and take water out with you in a bottle in your daypack for any of the activities.

You'll ride either a Scott Estrike 930 or a Trek Rail 5. Both are full suspension mountain bikes with 150mm travel at the front and rear.
