Key Information
Day 1
Welcome to Tanzania

On arrival at Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam you’ll be met by your local host and transferred to Southern Sun Hotel. Settle into your twin-share room and relax after your flight. In the late afternoon, you might want to explore nearby cafes or stroll to the waterfront for your first taste of Tanzanian sunshine. In the evening, meet up with your host and fellow adventurers for a welcome dinner and briefing for the journey ahead.
Day 2
Journey to the largest national park in all of Africa

Train Ride
Driving
Wildlife Watching
After breakfast, you'll leave the city behind to start your adventure – heading to Dar es Salaam's central train station to board the brand-new SGR fast train, heading south. Sit back and enjoy views of Tanzania's landscapes as you journey in style toward your first safari destination. On arrival at Ngerengere train station, you'll hop in your host's all-terrain vehicles to continue the journey to reach Nyerere National Park – part of the Selous Game Reserve, which is the largest protected reserve in Africa. Here, you'll find Sable Mountain Lodge, perched on a forested ridge on the park's edge and your base for exploring the park. Take in the magical surroundings as you settle in after lunch, maybe grab a dip in the pool or relax on the balcony, looking out for wildlife to shake off the journey here. Ease into your first sundowner moment with a late-afternoon visit to the lodge's secluded treehouse and waterhole, to see if any wildlife have come to drink as dusk approaches. Enjoy dinner at the lodge and a restful night, ahead of the safari action kicking off in the morning.
Day 3
Full day of wildlife spotting in Nyerere National Park

Wildlife Tracking
Boat Ride
Awake early today before first light, with the dawn chorus rising in the forest. You're setting off for a full day of safari in Nyerere National Park – keep your eyes peeled for elephants, lions, zebras, warthogs, giraffes, and myriad other wildlife, all against a backdrop of wide-open savannah. Nyerere is known for its large population of African wild dogs, also known as painted dogs, so be on high alert for a magical sighting of these endangered animals. Enjoy a packed lunch on the shores of Lake Tagalala before heading out onto the lake on a boat safari, drifting past hippos, crocodiles, and flocks of waterbirds while keeping a lookout for wildlife on the banks coming to drink in the heat of the late afternoon. Returning to the lodge at dusk after an epic day of wildlife spotting, enjoy sundowners and dinner together at the lodge.
Day 4
A magical morning walking safari before heading north

Wildlife Tracking
Driving
Wake again to the chorus of birds at dawn and head out on a guided bush walk with your guide and armed ranger, to see Nyerere from eye level. This intimate encounter on foot lets you discover the smaller wonders of the African bush. Bird lovers are in paradise here, with 440 species including kingfishers, herons, and bee-eaters. Small game such as impala and kudu can be spotted, and your expert wildlife guide will be on the lookout for signs of other wildlife during the morning activity in the bush. Afterward, following a late breakfast, you'll bid Sable Mountain Lodge and Nyerere a fond farewell as you begin your journey north, traveling through the Uluguru Mountains, stopping for a packed lunch in the shade of Kibungo Forest before arriving at Edelweiss Lodge in Morogoro for a comfortable overnight stop amid the welcome cool mountain air.
Day 5
First glimpses of the Indian Ocean at Saadani National Park

Driving
Hiking
After breakfast, you'll continue by road to reach a truly unique next destination. While the driving times look long on paper, this trip is a real journey through a diverse network of spectacular landscapes and locations, making the road trips more than worthwhile. Around lunchtime, you'll have reached Saadani National Park, a true hidden gem and a rare African safari destination blessed with a long stretch of coastline. You'll settle in at Simply Saadani, an elegant beachside hideaway, before enjoying a guided walk down to the wildlife research center to learn about your host's local conservation efforts here, including a lion research project. You'll also learn about the green turtle project and the breeding beach in Saadani, when between July and September baby turtles hatch from their nests and wander down to the sea. If visiting during these months, you may get to see this fantastic phenomenon. Enjoy sundowners and dinner overlooking the Indian Ocean as the next chapter of the trip begins.
Day 6
Saadani game drives and a boat safari
Wildlife Tracking
Boat Ride
Time to explore Saadani to its fullest and soak up being in a premier wildlife viewing destination, while feeling as though you have it all to yourself. It’s a relatively small park at 425 square miles, but has a diverse range of wildlife such as healthy lion prides, leopards, giraffes, zebras, antelopes, black and white colobus monkeys, and yellow baboons as well as a stunning number of birds, while crocodiles and hippopotamus (truly one of Africa's most fascinating animals) populate the Wami River. Saadani is one of only two parks in Tanzania which permit boat safaris, and is one of the best places to see large elephant herds which can be up to 80 strong. First up you'll take to the waters of the Wami, gliding past pods of hippopotamus and crocodiles on the safari boat, while birdlife fills the skies above. Next up, you'll set off on an extended game drive through Saadani’s varied landscapes, keeping your eyes peeled for those bucket-list leopard and lion sightings. Late in the afternoon, you'll reach your next safari lodge of the trip: Babs Camp. Grab a sundowner and head up their on-site viewing tower for an epic vista of the savannah.
Day 7
Walking safaris and night watch for lions

Hiking
Wildlife Tracking
Your time in Saadani is an evolving experience with no two safaris the same. Following yesterday's classic game drive and riverboat safari, today is all about a walking safari and a memorable night vigil to complete a quadrilogy of wildlife experiences. Your guide will lead the way across the Saadani salt flats first thing this morning, talking you through the intricacies of the African bush as you track various species. You’ll likely see giraffes, zebras, antelopes, buffalo, elephants, impala and countless bird species. Your guide will look out for tracks from the early morning activity for signs of big cats in the area – lion and leopard sightings occur regularly in this part of the park. After your time immersed in the bush, return to your lodge for lunch and some downtime here, relaxing during the hot part of the day. Late afternoon, you'll head out again in the 4x4 for a game drive and special night vigil looking for the resident lion pride, elephants and much more. Enjoy a memorable dinner around a campfire on the salt flats, keeping watch for wildlife as the sky turns to stars.
Day 8
A private boat to Zanzibar

Boat Ride
Snorkelling
Tuck into one last breakfast here before you bid farewell to Saadani and the Tanzanian mainland, boarding your private boat for a memorable journey north to Zanzibar. Your crew will make stops along the way for snorkeling in the coral gardens and swimming in turquoise waters, while lunch today is taken on a remote sandbar. Eventually, you'll reach the north end of Zanzibar, Tanzania's famous Indian Ocean idyll. You'll check into The Zanzibari in Nungwi, a gorgeous boutique hotel just steps from the beach, before enjoying a relaxed dinner.
Day 9
Island hopping the archipelago to reach Pemba Island

Boat Ride
Snorkelling
Back on board your private boat, it's time to explore the archipelago further as you island-hop to your Standout Stay and climax of the trip coming up later today. First up is a crossing to Misali Island, a pristine snorkeling paradise known for vibrant reefs and abundant marine life. Spend blissful hours here taking in the life beneath the ocean's surface and relaxing on the island's sun‑washed beaches with a picnic lunch, before continuing by boat. Your final destination is Pemba Island, Zanzibar's quiet and undeveloped neighbor, a beautiful natural haven in which to spend your final two nights of the trip. You'll check into the idyllic Fundu Lagoon for some serious R&R, where you can grab a sundowner overlooking paradise – before dinner and an evening listening to the lap of the waves.
Day 10
A free day in paradise on Pemba Island

After such an epic journey taking in so much of Tanzania's natural wonders, you've earned yourself a free day in paradise. Do totally as you please – relax on the beach with a book, go for a stroll around the island, enjoy a spa treatment, head out snorkeling from the shore or even go diving if you are qualified (there is a dive school here; you will need your PADI or SSI certification). Later tonight, you'll gather together with your host for a farewell meal at Fundu Lagoon, recounting all the magical memories from the past 10 days.
Day 11
The journey ends in Stone Town, Zanzibar

Boat Ride
Enjoy breakfast and maybe take one last swim in the sea before saying goodbye to Pemba Island and setting sail one last time for Zanzibar Harbor in the island's capital, Stone Town. From here, you’ll transfer to Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in time for any evening flights. Arrangements can be made for a day room in Stone Town if you are flying late in the day, or you can also choose to stay longer in Zanzibar with additional nights of lodging – see Optional Extras for details.

Transfers
On Day 1, your host will meet you on arrival at Dar es Salaam's International Airport (DAR) to transfer you to your hotel in the city.
On Day 11, you'll leave Pemba Island in the morning after checking out of your beach retreat, hopping on a private boat for the journey by sea and road to reach Stone Town in Zanzibar. Your host will aim to transfer the group to Stone Town Airport (ZNZ) at 2:00 PM. We recommend booking flights that depart after 8:00 PM if you are flying on this day. Sea conditions and traffic in Stone Town can affect the exact arrival time at the airport on the final day of the trip, so avoiding departures before 8:00 PM will ensure a stress-free end to the trip. If you are staying on longer in Zanzibar, you can liaise with your host to be dropped off at your onward accommodation on the island. It is possible to book this as an add-on via your host – please see Optional Extras for prices.
Travel options
You’ll need to fly into Julius Nyerere International Airport (DAR) in Tanzania's capital, Dar es Salaam. There are direct flights to Dar es Salaam from major hubs Amsterdam, Doha, Istanbul and Dubai, plus Johannesburg, Cape Town, Nairobi and Addis Ababa in other African destinations. There are no direct flights to the UK or North American airports, so North American and UK travelers can connect in any of the above hubs. Your return flight will need to depart from Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar (ZNZ).
Many flight comparison websites and airlines offer the option to book a multi-city ticket. In other words, a return flight out to Dar es Salaam International Airport (DAR), and back from Abeid Amani Karume International Airport in Zanzibar (ZNZ). This can often work out cheaper than buying two separate one-way tickets.

Tanzania is a year-round destination, with each season offering something a little different. The dry season from June to October is widely considered the best time to visit, particularly for wildlife viewing in Nyerere and Saadani National Parks. During these months, the weather is hot and dry, with daytime temperatures between 77–86°F and cooler mornings ideal for game drives and walking safaris. Animals tend to gather around water sources, making them easier to spot, and travel conditions are typically smooth.
That said, traveling outside of the peak dry season can be equally rewarding. From November to March, the parks are quieter, the landscapes greener, and birdlife at its best, with migratory species arriving in large numbers. Daytime temperatures typically range from 82–91°F during this period. Short rains can fall in November and December, but they’re usually brief and unlikely to disrupt most activities. This is also a fantastic time for photography, with dramatic skies and fewer vehicles on safari routes.
On the coast and in the Zanzibar Archipelago, the weather stays warm and humid year-round. Temperatures hover around 82–90°F, with steady sea breezes making conditions feel comfortable. The sea temperature ranges from 79–86°F, ideal for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. The clearest water for underwater activities is usually between January and March. While the main rainy season runs from March to May, showers are often short-lived and the islands are quieter — perfect for a more peaceful beach escape.
Sea conditions around Zanzibar and Pemba are generally calm from November to March, especially between December and February when the northeast monsoon (kaskazi) brings stable weather. However, choppier crossings can occur at the start and end of the season, particularly if the monsoon winds shift early or late.
We’re still waiting to collect any reviews from other travellers on this trip. However, all our hosts go through an extensive vetting process to ensure that your adventure is awesome.

Our trips do not include flights, trains or other travel to the start point and back from the end point.
Tips
Tips are not included in the trip cost; these are entirely at your discretion. If you would like to tip, the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality.
If you are happy with the quality of the guiding you receive on this trip, we suggest $15-20 USD per day to be a suitable amount to budget for tipping your main tour leader, driver and service staff at the accommodations.
Personal expenses
You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional food and drinks, shopping, and laundry.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 291kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and accommodation, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
BACKGROUND
Throughout your journey, you’ll be well-fed with fresh, hearty meals that reflect the landscapes you’re exploring. Days typically begin with a generous breakfast of tropical fruit, eggs cooked to order, baked goods, and rich Tanzanian coffee, ready before early morning game drives or foot safaris. Lunches vary from relaxed spreads at camp to picnic-style meals served in wild settings, with fresh salads, grilled meats, or local staples to keep you fueled for the afternoon. Come evening, you’ll sit down to three-course dinners often prepared with Swahili, Indian, and British influences, featuring catch of the day, seasonal veg, and homemade desserts.
On safari, meals are timed around your activities and served while out and about exploring the national parks. There’s always something cold to drink at sundown on this trip, and plenty of fruit and snacks between activities. At the coast, expect refined but relaxed dining with an emphasis on seafood, spices, and slow meals enjoyed with your toes in the sand.

Nyerere National Park (formerly called Selous) is the largest national park in Africa, with a rich variety of habitats and an impressive range of wildlife. Game viewing is best in the dry season (June to October), when animals concentrate around rivers and waterholes and the vegetation thins out. You’ve got a good chance of seeing four of the Big Five here: elephants, lions, buffalo and leopards, along with giraffes, zebras, hippos, crocodiles, wild dogs and plenty of plains game. Rhino are rarely seen in Nyerere, so a full Big Five is unlikely, but the diversity more than makes up for it. Walking safaris and boat safaris add a different perspective to the traditional game drive.
Saadani National Park offers a wilder, more off-the-beaten-path experience. It’s the only park in East Africa with a beach, where you can spot giraffes and elephants with the Indian Ocean as your backdrop. Game is less concentrated than in Nyerere, but sightings can still be special, with baboons playing on the beach, lions hidden in palm thickets, and crocodiles sunning themselves on riverbanks. Birdlife is excellent year-round, and the park is home to ongoing lion and turtle conservation work. It’s a great contrast to Nyerere, more about raw wilderness and variety than ticking off sightings.
Outside of the dry season, from November to March, the parks are greener and quieter, with fantastic birdwatching and atmospheric skies for photography. Wildlife is still active, but a bit more spread out, and short rains are possible – often in the late afternoon. It’s a lovely time to experience the landscape at its lushest, with fewer vehicles on the tracks and a more relaxed pace.
Nyerere and Saadani offer a very different safari experience compared to Tanzania’s more famous parks. While the Serengeti and Ngorongoro are iconic (for good reason), they’re also among the busiest wildlife destinations in Africa. Nyerere and Saadani are far less visited, allowing for a more peaceful, immersive, and crowd-free experience. Nyerere National Park (part of the wider Selous Game Reserve) is Africa’s largest national park, with vast, untouched landscapes and exceptional wildlife. Here, safaris feel more exploratory, with long stretches where you may not see another vehicle all day. It’s also one of two parks in Tanzania – the other being Saadani – offering boat safaris, providing a completely different perspective on the wildlife.
Saadani National Park is uniquely positioned where the African bush meets the Indian Ocean. It’s the only national park in East Africa with a coastline, offering the rare chance to combine traditional game drives with beachside wilderness, something you simply won’t find in the Serengeti or Ngorongoro.
This combination is ideal for travelers who want a quieter, more exclusive safari experience; value space, solitude, and a sense of discovery; and are looking for a fresh alternative to the classic safari circuit.
The tap water in Tanzania is not safe for international travelers to drink. Your host will provide drinking water throughout, while each of the accommodations on the trip also have safe drinking water for guests. You'll need to bring along a water bottle to fill up with to have with you on the activities, journeys, and game drives on this trip.
You'll have one main guide throughout the trip, a driver for the overland vehicle, and a boat captain and crew for the Zanzibar archipelago section of the trip. You'll also have dedicated safari guides for each of the safaris in Nyerere and Saadani National Parks.
Due to the geography of this trip, starting in Dar es Salaam and ending in Stone Town on Zanzibar, it is not possible to leave excess luggage at the start of the trip to be collected later. However, your luggage is transferred for you throughout the trip.
The boat used on the Zanzibar archipelago is a small motorboat, capable of carrying up to 20 people including crew. It has a small deck for relaxing on and an enclosed seating area for whenever the crossings are slightly choppier. The motorboat is able to reach the islands and sandbars on this section of the trip easier than a traditional sailboat without relying on wind speeds and direction.
Your host is an expert in adventure travel in Tanzania, with three decades of experience running trips all over the country. If adverse conditions affect any of the regions or activities on this itinerary, alternatives will be arranged. You have an experienced crew and skipper for the boat section of the trip, and this part has been planned with marine conditions in mind in terms of times of day for certain crossings. If the sea conditions are not fit for certain plans during this section of the trip, your skipper will have sole control of changing the route or timings as necessary to maintain the level of experience and keep everyone safe.
