Key Information

Day 1

Welcome to Egypt!

View of Cairo, Egypt. Photo: shutterstock_1394486126

Touch down in Cairo and make your way through arrivals, where you'll be met and transferred to your hotel near the Pyramids of Giza, catching your first unforgettable glimpse of Egypt's ancient icons. Settle in and freshen up, then meet your fellow travelers to head up to a rooftop restaurant overlooking the pyramids for your first evening together. The silhouettes of Giza rise against the desert sky as you sit down to a tasty welcome dinner of classic Egyptian dishes, getting to know your group and hearing what lies ahead – your guide will run through the plan for the days to come. As this itinerary spends limited time exploring Cairo itself, we'd highly recommend arriving in the morning or perhaps a day early to visit the Grand Egyptian Museum, along with any other city highlights you'd like to explore independently.

Day 2

The Pyramids, Saqqara and street food in Cairo

Driving
2hrs

Set off early this morning to reach the Giza Plateau as soon as it opens, arriving before the big crowds and heat build. Standing at the base of the Great Pyramid – the last remaining Ancient Wonder of the World – is a scale-of-the-moment experience. Led by your expert Egyptologist guide, unpack the stories behind these colossal structures, explore the plateau and take in the desert stretching beyond the city skyline, with the Sphinx watching on. Later, travel to Saqqara to step into one of Egypt’s most important ancient necropolises. Explore richly decorated tombs and stand before the Step Pyramid, the world’s earliest large-scale stone monument. With generally fewer crowds and open desert all around, it offers a deeper, more atmospheric glimpse into how pyramid building began. In the evening, swap ancient history for the energy of downtown Cairo: you’ll head into the city’s buzzing streets for a foodie tour with a local, women-led initiative, tasting classic Egyptian dishes. It’s the perfect way to end the day, with full bellies, new flavors, and seeing a different side of Cairo.

Leave Cairo behind early this morning and drive southwest to Fayoum, one of Egypt’s most underrated regions. Far from the classic tourist trail, this oasis is known for its blend of desert landscapes, lakes, and fertile farmland – a completely different side of the country than most see. On arrival, jump into 4x4 Jeeps and head off-road into the Western Desert. Today is all about adventure as you explore vast desert tracks, dramatic rock formations, and rolling sand dunes. Your destination is Wadi El Hitan (Valley of Whales), a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Egypt’s most extraordinary landscapes. Scattered across the desert floor lie fossilized whale skeletons, remnants of a prehistoric ocean that once covered this land millions of years ago. After exploring the valley on foot, continue by jeep across the dunes before stopping at the striking Magic Lake. There’s time for sandboarding, a refreshing swim if you fancy it, or simply soaking up the scenery. Enjoy a late Bedouin-style barbecue lunch by the lake before heading to your lodging in Tunis Village – a characterful, family-run eco-lodge surrounded by farmland. Built in traditional style and known for its warm hospitality, it’s a peaceful base after a full day out.

Rise early for a final adventure in Fayoum, heading into the protected landscapes of Wadi El Rayan. Today you'll hike from the waterfalls towards Medawara Mountain (Jabal al-Mudawara), a striking rock formation rising above the desert. The route is roughly 6 miles across a mix of packed dirt tracks, hard sand, and softer dune sections, with gentle rolling terrain and a short but steeper climb near the end. From the top, you’ll get wide views over the Magic Lake and surrounding dunes. Soak in Fayoum’s wild scenery before returning to the lodge. Back in Tunis Village, there’s time to relax, shower, and grab lunch locally, or explore the village’s pottery workshops. Later this afternoon, you'll drive back to Cairo to board your overnight sleeper train to Aswan. You'll stay in private twin-berth cabins with bunk beds, air conditioning, and basic wash facilities. It's not luxury, but it’s a classic and more eco-friendly Egyptian travel experience – a nostalgic way to cover the long distance south while you sleep. As the train rolls through the Nile Valley, you’ll wake up in Upper Egypt, ready for the next chapter of the journey.

Day 5

Nubian island life & kayaking on the Nile

Kayaking the Nile. Photo: host, travel trails
Kayaking
2-3hrs

Arrive in Aswan this morning and head to your hotel for the next two nights, set along the banks of the Nile. With its views across the river, it offers a comfortable base to relax after the journey south, with easy access to Aswan’s markets, cafes, and riverside promenade. After check-in, there’s time to settle in and explore the surroundings at your own pace. You may wish to take a stroll along the Corniche, browse the nearby souks, or simply unwind by the hotel’s pool overlooking the Nile. This afternoon, take to the water for a gentle guided kayaking session on the Nile. Paddling here is calm and surprisingly scenic, giving you the chance to experience one of the world's most iconic rivers up close as you glide past islands and along the shoreline. Back at the hotel, enjoy some downtime before sitting down to dinner together, with views across the river providing a fitting backdrop to the evening.

Day 6

Desert hike to St Simeon & Nubian family dinner

Hiking
3hrs · 5mi · 328ft up · 328ft down

This morning, swap riverbanks for desert. Setting off on foot from near the Nile, you’ll hike through soft, golden sands and rocky paths toward the Monastery of St Simeon (Anba Hatre), a fortified 7th-century Coptic monastery rising from the desert plateau. One of the most striking parts of the experience is the shift in scenery – within minutes, you move from the Nile's lush, palm-lined banks to arid land. At the top, explore the atmospheric ruins of the monastery with your guide, learning about its strategic position, defensive walls, and the monastic life lived here centuries ago. With far fewer visitors than Egypt’s major temples, it feels remote and quietly impressive. Later, hike back toward the river and return to your base for some free time, where you can choose to relax at the resort, take a swim, or simply slow the pace. Late afternoon, take a motorboat to a lesser-visited Nubian island where you’ll be welcomed into a local family home for dinner. It’s a chance to share food, stories, and conversation, offering a more personal insight into local life along the Nile.

Day 7

Felucca sailing on the Nile

Sailing
6hrs

Enjoy a slower start to today – you might choose to relax at the hotel or alternatively, there’s the option to visit nearby Philae Temple, one of Egypt’s most iconic and elegant temple complexes (not included, payable locally). By late morning, you'll board your traditional felucca and begin sailing north along the Nile. These simple wooden sailboats have been used for centuries and offer a peaceful, wind-powered way to travel. The pace is unhurried as you drift past palm-lined banks, golden dunes and small riverside villages, watching daily life unfold along the water. Feluccas are very basic, which is all part of the charm. You'll sleep camping-style on deck, with mattresses, pillows and blankets provided. There’ll be time to socialize with your group, relax with a book, or simply lie back and watch the scenery glide by. By evening, you’ll moor near a quiet riverbank for the night – falling asleep under open skies as the Nile gently laps the boat.

Day 8

Explore Luxor's ancient wonders

Luxor Temple, Egypt. Photo: Shutterstock 2424131043
Driving
4hrs

Wake up on the Nile and enjoy a relaxed morning on deck as the felucca continues its journey north. After breakfast, disembark for the drive to Luxor, once known as the ancient city of Thebes and still one of Egypt’s most impressive archaeological centers. Arrive at your hotel and check in, with the afternoon free to rest and recharge after your adventure on the river. If you do have the energy, this is a great chance to make the most of your time in Luxor and opt to visit Karnak Temple independently. One of the largest temple complexes ever built, it's an essential stop for anyone interested in ancient Egypt. This evening, regroup for a guided visit to nearby Luxor Temple, beautifully illuminated after dark. Visiting at night gives the site a completely different atmosphere, with towering columns and statues dramatically lit against the evening sky. After the tour, continue into the lively souks, wandering through narrow alleys packed with spices, textiles, and local crafts, before sitting down for a final group meal at a local restaurant. However, the adventure is not quite over yet! There’s an early start tomorrow for one last morning of exploration.

Day 9

Cycle the Valley of the Kings

Hot air balloons, Luxor, Egypt. Photo: Shutterstock 2613761927
Cycling
1.5-2hrs

For those who want to end the trip in unforgettable style, there’s the option to join a sunrise hot air balloon flight over Luxor (payable locally; weather dependent). Watching first light hit the Nile and the temples below is one of Egypt’s most iconic experiences, along with sweeping views over the West Bank, desert landscapes, and patchwork of farmland. After the balloon flight, everyone regroups before setting off together for a bike ride through Luxor’s West Bank villages, run in partnership with a local community-led NGO project. This is more than just a scenic ride – it’s a chance to experience the area at ground level while supporting an initiative that benefits those living here. Pedal along quiet village lanes and through green fields, passing mudbrick houses, date palms, and everyday rural life unfolding around you. Next, arrive at the legendary Valley of the Kings, the burial site of Egypt’s pharaohs. With your guide, explore several of the richly decorated tombs, stepping down into chambers where intricate hieroglyphics and colorful wall paintings have survived for thousands of years. You’ll be back at the hotel by around noon. You can book an onward flight from Luxor (usually via Cairo) to return home departing from mid-afternoon onwards, or choose to extend your stay. That’s your adventure through Egypt completed!

Transfers

Private airport transfers are included on Day 1 (when you arrive in Cairo) and Day 9 (if you're departing from Luxor). Please provide your flight details at the time of booking, so your local host can arrange these services in advance. As the welcome briefing and dinner takes place on the evening of Day 1, we recommend arriving in Cairo by mid-afternoon at the latest to allow time for the drive to your hotel and to settle in. On Day 9, the trip concludes at approximately 12:00 PM (noon) in Luxor, so please book onward flights from Luxor Airport departing after 2:30 PM at the earliest, or you might consider extending your stay.

If you’d prefer to arrive early or extend your trip in Cairo or Luxor and see more of the amazing cultural sites these cities offer, your host can assist with arranging additional nights’ lodging and private transfers. Please see the Optional Extras section for further details.

Travel options

This trip starts in Cairo (CAI) and ends in Luxor (LXR), so we recommend booking an open-jaw (multi-city) flight: flying into Cairo and returning home from Luxor. This is often the easiest and most time-efficient option and can be searched for using the 'multi-city' tool on most flight booking websites.

Cairo International Airport is well connected, with direct and one-stop flight options from the UK, Europe, and the US. Airlines such as EgyptAir offer good connectivity into Cairo, including direct flights from London and select US gateways. At the end of the trip, Luxor Airport has more limited direct connections, but there are regular domestic flights between Luxor and Cairo, making it easy to connect onward with the same airline. For UK travelers, there are also direct flights between Luxor and London Gatwick operated by airlines such as EasyJet (often seasonal), which can make flying home from Luxor a convenient option. It is possible to fly in and out with different airlines; however, booking both legs with the same airline is often more affordable.

What is the food like?

Egyptian food. Photo: Shutterstock-2192873973

Food is a central part of this journey, from street eats in Cairo to home cooking in the Nubian islands and simple meals on the Nile. Egyptian cuisine is often mezze-style, with a spread of hot and cold dishes built around beans, eggs, cheeses, salads, vegetables, and plenty of fresh bread. In Cairo, you’ll join a special foodie tour, heading beyond the obvious spots to sample local favorites and neighborhood staples while learning about the city’s culinary culture. During your time in the Fayoum and on the felucca, meals are hearty and home-style, often featuring fragrant vegetable stews, rice, pasta, and flatbreads. One evening in Aswan, you’ll share dinner with a Nubian family – a chance to experience traditional recipes and warm hospitality in a relaxed, informal setting. Breakfasts typically include bread, jams, cheese, tea, and coffee. When lunch is not included, you’re free to choose where to eat, and your leader will be on hand to recommend trusted local spots. For specific information about alcohol availability throughout the trip, please check the FAQ on this trip page.

If you have any dietary requirements, intolerances, or allergies, please check the FAQ below: ‘Can my dietary requirements be catered for on this adventure?’ for specific advice relating to this trip. The availability of foods you may get at home varies in different destinations, so please read the FAQ in full before making your booking to ensure that this trip can accommodate your dietary needs.

What is the accommodation like?

Saray Hotel, Giza. Photo: Saray Hotel
Cairo

You'll spend the first two nights of the trip at the Saray Hotel in Giza, a comfortable and well-located base just a short distance from the pyramids. The hotel offers modern, en suite rooms with air conditioning, along with a rooftop terrace where you can take in views of the pyramids rising above the city skyline. After busy days exploring Cairo and its ancient sites, it's a relaxed spot to unwind, enjoy the atmosphere and watch the light fade over Giza. A tasty breakfast is served each morning, setting you up for the day ahead.

Kom El Dikka Agri Lodge in Tunis Village, Fayoum. Photo: hotel's facebook
Fayoum

You’ll stay one night at Kom El Dikka Agri Lodge in Tunis Village, a peaceful, family-run spot overlooking Lake Qarun in the Fayoum. Set among farmland and palm trees, the lodge blends traditional mud-brick architecture with simple, comfortable interiors. Twin-share rooms are en suite and air-conditioned, and there’s a leafy garden and terrace with pool where you can relax after time out in the desert. Meals are freshly prepared using local ingredients from their own farm whenever possible, and your hosts are on hand to share insight into village life in this creative corner of rural Egypt.

Elite class cabin, overnight sleper train, Egypt. Photo: host, Travel Trails
Overnight sleeper train

You’ll travel south from Cairo to Aswan by overnight sleeper train in Elite class, using cars newly introduced in 2026. Lodging is in twin cabins with bunk beds – compact and simple rather than luxurious, but all part of the experience of traveling the Nile the old-fashioned way. Each car has 10 cabins and two shared toilets, one for men and one for women. There’s a small club car where you can chat with your group and watch the landscape drift past. Tea, coffee, and soft drinks are available, though alcohol is not served. Dinner and breakfast are included and delivered to your cabin as airline-style set trays. Expect a functional night’s sleep rather than hotel-level comfort – an eye mask and earplugs are recommended – before waking to the morning light along the Nile as the train rolls into Upper Egypt.

Obelisk Hotel Exterior. Photo: hotels' website

Spend two nights at the Obelisk Hotel, a comfortable and well-located stay set along the banks of the Nile in central Aswan. With its classic style and spacious setting, the hotel offers a relaxed base with twin-share en suite rooms, air conditioning and views across the river. There’s a swimming pool overlooking the Nile, as well as gardens and terraces where you can unwind after a day of exploring temples and islands. Its central location also makes it easy to step out and experience Aswan’s lively atmosphere, from the nearby souks to the riverside promenade. Combining comfort, facilities and a prime riverside setting, it’s an ideal place to recharge while staying connected to life along the Nile.

Felucca sailing boat, Egypt. Photo: host, Travel Trails
Felucca overnight

You'll spend one night on a traditional felucca – the kind of wooden, wind-powered sailboats that have traveled the Nile for generations. This is slow, simple river travel rather than luxury, but it's a memorable way to experience life on the water. The boat itself is very basic, and you'll sleep camping-style on deck, where mattresses, pillows, and blankets are laid out beneath a canopy that offers shade by day and some shelter from the wind. A mosquito net is placed around the sleeping area at night for added comfort and privacy. Depending on your group size, you may be split onto multiple boats. There are no toilets or showers on board the felucca; instead, a private support boat travels close by, equipped with two toilets, two showers, and a covered dining area with tables and chairs. Meals are prepared on the support boat and served during your time on the river. Life jackets are provided for all passengers. This is a back-to-basics but worthwhile experience; an eye mask, earplugs, and a warm layer for the evening are recommended.

Please note that sailing is entirely wind dependent and subject to weather conditions, river traffic, and official permits issued on the morning of departure after inspection by the river authorities. Itineraries must therefore remain flexible. If conditions prevent sailing, alternative transportation and hotel lodging will be arranged, with meals provided as planned. If the wind drops or weather changes while you are already on the river, the captain will dock for safety and you may continue the day exploring nearby farm islands and small villages with your guide. Overnight will usually remain on the felucca, unless conditions make this impractical, in which case a hotel stay will be arranged. During colder winter months, particularly December and January, a hotel may be provided instead of sleeping on deck if temperatures are too low for a comfortable night.

Hotel Sheherazade pool, Luxor. Photo: hotel's website
Luxor

You'll spend the final night of the trip at the Sheherazade Hotel, located on the west bank of the Nile in Luxor – a quieter setting away from the busier east bank. To reach some of the main temples, you'll take a short local ferry across the river, while being ideally positioned closer to the hot air balloon launch sites and cycling routes on the west bank. You'll stay in simply decorated, twin-share rooms which are en suite, with air conditioning. The hotel features a nice garden and a swimming pool, a peaceful place to unwind after your journey through Egypt.

Upgrades

Solo travellers who would prefer their own space can book a private room for seven nights of the trip, including a private cabin on the overnight train, for an additional charge. Please see Optional Extras for the price. This does not apply to the overnight felucca stay, where sleeping is on a shared deck. Please request the single supplement at the time of booking, as it is subject to availability.

This trip runs between October and May, when temperatures are more comfortable for exploring Egypt’s archaeological sites and desert landscapes: typically ranging between 68–95°F during the day. Your guides will plan activities to avoid the hottest parts of the day where possible, with early starts for key sites like the pyramids and the Valley of the Kings. In desert regions such as Fayoum and on the Nile, evenings can cool down significantly, particularly between December and February, with temperatures sometimes dropping to around 41–50°F overnight. Warm layers are recommended, especially for the felucca sailing night and desert lodge stay. Blankets are provided on the felucca, but bringing a warm sleeping bag liner or lightweight sleeping bag is advisable in the cooler months (see the Kit List for more details).

This trip is brand new

Travel to and from the trip

Meals

Five lunches are not included in the cost of this trip, giving you the flexibility to explore local restaurants and choose dishes that suit your tastes: there will be plenty of affordable options available throughout the journey. Egypt offers excellent value when it comes to food, and we recommend budgeting around $100–150 (USD) per person in total (approximately EGP 5,000–7,500) to cover these meals, excluding drinks. Your guide will be on hand throughout to recommend good local spots and help organize group meals where appropriate.

Optional activities

There are a few optional activities available throughout the trip for those who would like to add extra experiences. These can be arranged locally with your guide, unless stated otherwise.

  • Fayoum (Day 4): pottery class in Tunis Village – approximately $15/750 EGP per person. Try your hand at traditional pottery in a local workshop in this creative desert village.

  • Aswan (Day 6): guided tour of Philae Temple, including transportation and entrance fees. Organized by your guide, the pricing does vary depending on the number of participants.
    • 1–3 people: $100/5,000 EGP per person

    • 7–14 people: $45/2,250 EGP per person

  • Luxor (Day 9): sunrise hot air balloon over the West Bank – approximately $105/5,250 EGP per person. Includes balloon flight ticket, transfers, and light snacks. Operated by a reputable licensed local balloon company, booking and payment is made locally. Please note that all balloon flights are weather dependent and subject to local authority approval.

Tips

Tipping is a way of life in Egypt and is both customary and widely expected. It is normal to tip small service providers such as restaurant and bar staff, hotel reception and cleaning teams, bell boys, van drivers, and the felucca crew.

To make the process simple and avoid awkward situations, we operate a tipping kitty system on our trips. At the start of the trip, your guide will collect a contribution from each guest. This pooled fund is then used to tip service providers who assist the group as a whole throughout the journey. If at any point you feel that a service provider has not delivered an acceptable standard of service, please inform your guide immediately. Adjustments to tipping can be made where appropriate. We recommend budgeting approximately $50 (USD) per person for the entire trip.

At the end of the trip, if you feel your guide has provided an excellent experience, an additional personal tip is both appreciated and customary. While the exact amount is entirely at your discretion, a general guideline is $5–10 per person per day.

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate coverage for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and gear, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment coverage, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.

Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travelers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield, both of which offer coverage for a wide range of adventurous activities.

Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip, including the optional hot air ballooning if you wish to join this.

Visas

Eligible travelers can obtain a 30-day tourist visa on arrival at Egyptian airports.

•	Cost: $30 (USD; cash only)
•	Where to purchase: bank kiosks inside the airport before immigration
•	Validity: 30 days
•	Passport requirement: your passport must be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry into Egypt.

Currently, citizens of the UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, and all EU countries are eligible for a visa on arrival. If you hold a different passport, please check with your local Egyptian consulate before traveling.

Please note that visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

An airport representative will be available to assist customers who are arranging their visa on arrival and guide you through the process. Alternatively, you can choose to apply in advance for an e-Visa online via the official government website. Please allow approximately seven working days for processing.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 396kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully before your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND

Egyptian cuisine is deeply rooted in ancient agricultural traditions shaped by the Nile, with a strong emphasis on legumes, vegetables, and simple, filling dishes designed to sustain everyday life. Staples such as beans, lentils, rice, and flatbreads form the backbone of many meals, often flavored with herbs and spices rather than heavy sauces. This makes Egypt reasonably suitable for vegetarian and dairy-free travelers, though meals can be repetitive and bread is almost always present. Awareness of gluten-free diets and severe allergies is more limited, particularly outside hotels and tourist centers, so travelers with specific or complex dietary requirements should be prepared to explain their needs clearly and manage their expectations.

SPECIAL DIETS

Vegetarian
Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided your host is made aware in advance. On this trip, protein sources will mainly include lentils, beans, and whole wheat bread. If you require a higher protein intake, please consider bringing your favorite protein bars or protein supplements from home.

Vegan
Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. On this trip, protein sources will mainly include lentils, beans, and whole wheat bread. If you require a higher protein intake, please consider bringing your favorite protein bars or protein supplements from home.

Kosher
Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and cannot be guaranteed. Vegetarian or vegan options are the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you; please read the related sections above.

Halal
Halal diets can be catered for on this trip. Halal food is widely available in Egypt, and in practice, almost all food served throughout the country is Halal. As a predominantly Muslim country, restaurants, hotels, and food suppliers follow Halal standards as a norm, making it easy for you to dine with confidence.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten Free (for Celiac, please see Allergies section below)
Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, though options are more limited. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that gluten-free produce and ingredients are not widely available in this destination, and meals may feel repetitive. For example, baked potatoes are often substituted for bread or pasta. We recommend bringing your favorite gluten-free snacks or food supplements from home to ensure you have enough fuel for your adventure.

Lactose Free
Lactose-Free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. The main dairy product served is cheese, which is offered daily at breakfast. This can be easily avoided, as there are always alternative breakfast options available.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life-threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our Customer Experience team before booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

Certain regions of Egypt operate under enhanced tourism security measures as part of the Egyptian government’s official Tourism Protection Plan. In some areas (such as Fayoum), a uniformed tourism police officer may accompany the group while traveling within the region. The officer may travel on the bus and remain with the group during activities in that area. This is a standard procedure and part of the local tourism security framework. In these situations, your guide works closely with the officer and will introduce them to the group. They effectively become part of the support team during that section of the trip. In other parts of the itinerary, there is no police escort. However, you may notice security checkpoints along certain routes where vehicles are routinely stopped and documentation is checked. These are totally normal procedures in Egypt and form part of the country’s broader tourism safety measures. These arrangements are designed to support visitor safety and ensure smooth travel throughout the country.

In terms of safety aboard the felucca, your overnight stay takes place in a designated docking area that our crew knows well and uses regularly. A dedicated support boat accompanies the felucca throughout the experience, providing additional security and lighting during the night. You will also be supervised at all times by the felucca crew and your tour guide. The excursion will operate with official police permission that specifies approved docking and overnight locations, and the area falls within the Tourism Police protection zone. As with any outdoor experience, we recommend following your guide’s instructions at all times to ensure a safe and enjoyable stay.

Tap water is not drinkable anywhere in Egypt. Water will be provided by your host throughout your time in Fayoum and on the felucca, in the form of bottled water in large bottles, which you can use to refill your own water bottles. Some hotels may also have filtered water available for free. We do encourage you to bring a refillable bottle to reduce plastic waste.

This trip is designed to ensure your time in Egypt supports local people and small businesses, not just the major tourist sites. Throughout the itinerary, you’ll stay in locally run lodging and travel with local guides, drivers, and activity providers, helping tourism income remain within the communities you visit. Several of the standout experiences are directly community-based, including a cooking class in Cairo, a Bedouin-style lunch in Fayoum, and a Nubian dinner hosted by a local family in Aswan. These experiences offer a more personal connection with local culture while supporting family-run businesses and traditional ways of life.

In Luxor, the cycling experience on the West Bank is delivered in partnership with the Fantasia project. Fantasia is a local initiative designed to create sustainable livelihoods for communities living around Luxor by offering meaningful, low-impact tourism experiences. The project supports local employment through trained guides, bike mechanics, and community-run services, while also helping to protect the character of rural villages that sit just beyond Luxor’s major archaeological sites.

Ramadan is a month of fasting observed by Muslims around the world. During this time, followers of Islam do not eat or drink between sunrise and sunset. In 2027, Ramadan is expected to take place approximately from February 8 to March 8-10 (dates may vary slightly depending on moon sightings). There may be some limitations to services and minor disruptions to schedules during Ramadan. However, this trip will operate effectively throughout this period, and food is available to non-Muslims during the day.

Opening and closing times of certain sites may differ during Ramadan, and your itinerary may be adjusted accordingly without changing the overall trip dynamic or daily inclusions. Please note that it is very important to display increased cultural sensitivity during this time. Please wear loose-fitting clothing that covers shoulders and knees, and try to avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during daylight hours out of respect for those who are fasting.

In Egypt, it is a legal requirement for all hotels and tourism operators to take a copy of guests' passports (or local ID for domestic travelers), which they must submit to the tourist police.

In addition, your host must submit a copy of your passport to the National Park authorities for permission to travel in the area visited on this trip. The application for this permission must be completed at least a day in advance, so your host asks for these in advance of travel to ensure trip preparations are complete in time for your arrival. Passport scan copies held by Much Better Adventures are deleted after your trip has finished.

Egypt is a predominantly Muslim country and, while major cities such as Cairo, Luxor, and Aswan are very accustomed to tourism, dressing modestly is recommended as a sign of cultural respect. In general, both men and women should aim to cover from the shoulders to below the knees when out in public. Lightweight, breathable clothing that covers the skin is highly recommended not only for cultural reasons but also for protection against the strong sun.

For women, long skirts, maxi dresses, loose linen pants, and blouses are ideal. Clothing should be loose-fitting and not see-through, and it’s best to avoid very tight, low-cut, or sheer garments.

For men, long pants or jeans are most appropriate, although knee-length shorts are generally acceptable in cities when paired with a t-shirt or polo shirt. Very short shorts and sleeveless tops are not recommended outside beach or resort areas.

When visiting mosques and other religious sites, both men and women must dress more conservatively. Women are required to cover their hair, arms, and legs, while men should wear long pants. Shoes must be removed before entering. Your guide will advise you when specific dress adjustments are required.

Swimwear is acceptable at hotel pools and private beaches. However, modest dress is still expected when leaving the hotel grounds.

Egypt’s most famous sites – particularly the Pyramids of Giza, Saqqara, the Valley of the Kings, and Luxor Temple – can be busy, especially during peak season. However, this itinerary has been structured to help you experience these highlights in the best possible way, often visiting early in the day or at quieter times where possible. Outside of the major monuments, much of the trip feels more peaceful. Fayoum’s desert landscapes, kayaking on the Nile in Aswan, and sailing by felucca are all experiences that offer a strong sense of space and escape from the crowds. Overall, you should expect a mix: a few iconic, lively sightseeing moments balanced by plenty of quieter experiences where Egypt feels calmer, authentic, and removed from mass tourism.

Swimming in the Nile is not included as part of the trip. While some sections of the Nile (particularly fast-flowing, fresh water areas) are considered lower risk, the river can carry waterborne parasites such as bilharzia (schistosomiasis), particularly in slower-moving or stagnant water. During the felucca experience, your guide will provide a safety briefing explaining the potential risks associated with entering the water. Any decision to swim is entirely at your own discretion. We recommend avoiding contact with the river water if you have any open cuts or wounds. If you are unsure, it is always safest not to enter the water.

Yes, there is the option to take a sunrise hot air balloon flight over Luxor’s West Bank, one of the most iconic experiences in Egypt. This is an optional add-on, but we recommend getting in contact with your host prior to the trip if you'd like to request it. Balloon flights run very early in the morning, often requiring a 3:00–4:00 am pick-up (depending on the season and the day’s sunrise time). You’ll be transferred to the launch area on the West Bank, where you’ll have a short safety briefing and watch the balloons being prepared before take-off. The flight itself typically lasts 45–60 minutes, though total time from hotel pick-up to return is usually around 3-4 hours. As with all balloon flights, the experience is highly weather-dependent. Strong winds, poor visibility or safety concerns may result in delays or cancellations, sometimes at short notice. For this reason, this activity is not included in the trip cost and is instead bookable and payable locally.

While alcohol is legal in Egypt, it is primarily available in 5-star hotels, licensed tourist restaurants, and bars, where local beers and wines are popular and generally affordable options. Licensed liquor stores, such as Drinkies, also sell spirits (gin, vodka, whiskey) and ready-to-drink flavored beverages (often referred to locally as 'ID drinks'). However, alcohol is not available everywhere; most 3-star and boutique hotels do not hold a license to serve alcoholic beverages. The hotels used on this trip are dry hotels, meaning alcohol is not sold or served on the premises, although guests are free to bring their own drinks, and there are no restrictions on consuming your own alcohol within the property. The sleeper train also does not serve alcoholic beverages, but again, travelers are welcome to purchase drinks in advance and bring them onboard. On the felucca and accompanying support boat, local beer and wine are available to purchase and a price list will be provided to guests upon embarkation. Please note that drinking alcohol in public spaces (outside of licensed bars and restaurants) is discouraged. During the Islamic holy month of Ramadan, alcohol sales are restricted to licensed tourist establishments. In some cases, purchasing alcohol may require presentation of a foreign passport. As always, we encourage guests to drink responsibly and be respectful of local customs and cultural norms.

Adventure travel always involves a degree of flexibility – especially in destinations shaped by weather, river conditions, and local regulations. The felucca sailing experience, for example, depends on wind conditions on the Nile. If there isn’t enough wind, parts of the journey may be assisted by a support boat, or the schedule may be adjusted slightly. Safety is always the priority, and your guide will make decisions in collaboration with the sailing crew to ensure a smooth experience. Temperatures can also vary more than people expect, particularly in winter. While days are often warm, desert mornings and evenings – especially in Fayoum and on the felucca – can be surprisingly cold. Packing layers is essential. In the unlikely event of changes to official travel advice or local travel regulations, the local team and our operations staff closely monitor the situation. Routes, activities, or transportation may be adjusted if required to prioritize safety, while maintaining the overall experience wherever possible.

Flexibility is part of the journey, and your guide will keep you informed throughout. In most cases, small changes simply become part of the adventure, and often lead to equally memorable experiences.
