Today marks the beginning of your Madeiran adventure. Airport transfers run at four set times throughout the day to coincide with guest arrivals, before heading to your base for the week - Hotel Saccharum, a 5-star coastal retreat set above the Atlantic on Madeira's sunny southwest coast. After checking in, enjoy some free time to explore the surroundings, take a dip in the ocean-view pool or simply unwind after your journey. In the early evening, meet your guide for a briefing about the days ahead, followed by a welcome dinner at a local restaurant - the perfect opportunity to get to know your fellow hikers and raise a glass to the adventure ahead.

After breakfast, leave the hotel and transfer to Achadas da Cruz, one of the most spectacular coastal areas on Madeira's rugged northwest coast. Board the cable car for a dramatic descent to the remote seaside settlement of Calhau das Achadas da Cruz, perched between towering volcanic cliffs and the churning Atlantic below. From here, the hike begins with a steady climb towards Santa, passing through wild coastal scenery before continuing along the clifftops to Porto Moniz. On arrival, take some well-earned time to cool off in Porto Moniz's famous natural volcanic pools - one of Madeira's most iconic spots, where ancient lava formations create a series of sheltered ocean-fed pools perfect for a refreshing swim. In the afternoon, transfer back to the hotel with plenty of time to relax, unwind and enjoy the facilities before a free evening to dine at the hotel or a nearby restaurant.

After yesterday's coastal drama, today you'll head deep into Madeira's mountainous interior for a completely different side of the island. After breakfast, transfer to Boca da Corrida, the starting point for one of Madeira's most rewarding mountain hikes. From here, the trail winds through dramatic mountain scenery, with sweeping views across the island's rugged interior, before descending into Curral das Freiras - the legendary "Nun's Valley", a remote and breathtaking village hidden deep within a natural amphitheatre of towering peaks. The valley's remarkable isolation, once accessible only on foot, gives it an atmosphere unlike anywhere else on the island. On arrival, sit down to a traditional espetada lunch in the nearby hamlet of Fajã Escura - skewered beef grilled over laurel wood, a true taste of Madeiran mountain culture. After lunch, transfer back to the hotel and enjoy the rest of the afternoon to relax, soak in the pool or make use of the hotel's spa and wellness facilities.

Today's hike starts just a short drive from the hotel, on the sunny southwestern slopes of Madeira. Old farming paths thread through terraces and smallholdings where life still moves to an unhurried agricultural rhythm, before the trail opens out to sweeping Atlantic views and the dramatic cliffs that define this side of the island. You'll then join a stretch of Levada Nova — one of Madeira's historic irrigation channels built to carry water from the wetter north to the drier south — before the route drops steadily downhill along ancient caminho real tracks, royal paths once trodden by generations of farmers and fishermen travelling between the highlands and the sea. At the bottom, the village of Paul do Mar comes into view; one of Madeira's most authentic coastal communities, once renowned for its tuna fishing fleets and rich maritime heritage. Sit down to a well-earned lunch at a local restaurant in the village, before heading to the harbour for a swim if the sea allows. Transfer back to the hotel and enjoy the rest of the afternoon at leisure — perhaps with a well-earned cocktail in hand.

Today is the crown jewel of the week - one of the most spectacular mountain walks in all of Europe. We leave the hotel early and drive up to Pico do Areeiro, Madeira's third highest peak at 1,818m, where on a clear day the views stretch endlessly above a sea of clouds. From here, the trail follows the dramatic PR1 ridge route — a breathtaking series of peaks, staircases and tunnels carved through rock faces and vertiginous viewpoints — as you make your way towards Pico Ruivo, the island's highest point at 1,862m. The sense of achievement on reaching the summit is hard to match, with panoramic views in every direction over Madeira's mountainous interior, the north and south coasts and, on a clear day, the neighbouring island of Porto Santo. From Pico Ruivo, the trail descends to Achada do Teixeira, where your transfer will be waiting to bring you back to the hotel. In the evening, gather together one last time for a farewell dinner with your guide at a local restaurant — a fitting celebration of an extraordinary week on foot in Madeira.

Detailed Logistics

Transfers

Airport transfers run at four set times until 17:00 on Day 1 - typically two in the morning and two in the afternoon — designed to meet the majority of incoming flights. Your host will confirm the exact transfer times prior to your arrival. Please note that waiting times of up to 40 minutes may apply if multiple flights land around the same time. We recommend booking a flight that arrives by 16:00 at the latest to ensure you have time to settle in before the evening briefing and welcome dinner. If you arrive significantly earlier or later than the set transfer times, a private transfer can be arranged at an additional cost (see Optional Extras). Return transfers to the airport also run at four set times throughout the day, typically after breakfast, with exact timings confirmed by your host in advance. For those with a later flight or wishing to explore a little further, a complimentary drop-off in Funchal is included, giving you time to discover the capital at your own pace before heading home. Once your flights are confirmed, please share the details with your host so transfers can be arranged accordingly.

Travel options

There are regular flights to Funchal from major airports across the UK and Europe. From the US and Canada, the most common routing is via Lisbon, London or other major European hubs, with onward connections to Funchal. Trip level explained

Level 3

Moderate

This hiking holiday features four of the best trails across Madeira's dramatic coast, hidden valleys and iconic mountain ridges. Most days are moderate in pace and length, with three more demanding days (Curral das Freiras, Achada da Cruz and Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo) involving more significant ascent and descent. Do not underestimate the cumulative effect of steep terrain and elevation change throughout the week, which can be taxing on the legs and knees. Trail conditions are generally well-maintained levada paths and mountain tracks, but some sections include uneven and exposed terrain requiring confident footing and a comfortable head for heights. Hiking duration is typically between 4 to 6 hours per day including stops, with distances around 10km daily and elevation changes provided in the itinerary. Most days finish in the mid-afternoon, leaving some time to unwind, relax and enjoy the hotel facilities before dinner. Some walks, including Porto Moniz and Paul do Mar, finish by the sea, with the opportunity to swim if conditions allow. Madeira's weather is generally warm and mild year round but the island's mountainous interior is prone to sudden changes in cloud, wind and rain, which can impact trail conditions and visibility. Some prior hiking experience, and coming well prepared for the conditions, is highly recommended to enjoy the itinerary to the fullest.

What if i need to skip an activity?

As the trip is based in a single hotel throughout the itinerary, you are free to opt out from any of the hikes if you prefer. Please speak to your guide if you decide to skip any of the included activities.

What will I need to carry?

You'll need to have a larger bag suitable for all your belongings which will remain at the hotel and then a small rucksack to carry personal items during each day of activity.

Hot climate: factors to consider

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme levels, with limited shade and, at times, high humidity adding to the challenge. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but staying well hydrated, wearing suitable clothing, and using sun protection is essential.

Before traveling, consider your ability to remain active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have any concerns, especially if you have cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two before the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

FAQs

Yes - and that matters to us. Every element of this trip has been designed to keep your spend within the local Madeiran economy, from where you sleep to who guides you on the trail. Your booking directly supports:

  • A locally owned hotel - Hotel Saccharum is part of Savoy Signature, owned by Grupo AFA, a Madeiran company with roots on the island since the 1980s. Your money doesn't flow to a multinational chain's shareholders in the US, UK, or France
  • Local jobs - Savoy Signature is one of the island's largest employers, from hospitality staff to local management, and sources Madeiran produce, regional wines and local black scabbard fish for its restaurants
  • A local host - your trip is run by a local specialist operator who knows Madeira intimately, ensuring your spend supports island businesses rather than an overseas tour operator
  • Local guides - every guided experience on this trip is led by local guides, whose knowledge of the island's trails, culture and communities goes far beyond any guidebook
  • Local restaurants - when we eat out, we eat local. The restaurants on this trip are independently owned Madeiran establishments, not international chains
  • Local taxes - because all our partners are headquartered in Portugal, the tourism levies and taxes generated by your trip stay within the Madeiran fiscal system, funding island infrastructure and public services

The tap water in Madeira is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottle to fill up at the hotels, public fountains and at restaurants to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip, depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND

Madeiran and Portuguese cuisine is rooted in simple, hearty cooking shaped by the Atlantic climate and centuries of rural traditions. Meals often centre around grilled meats, fresh fish and seafood, vegetables, soups and bread, with olive oil, garlic and herbs used generously. In Madeira, dishes such as vegetable soups, stews, grilled fish, salads and side dishes are common, and meals are typically straightforward and filling rather than heavily processed.

While Portugal is not traditionally as plant-based as some Mediterranean countries, vegetarian and lactose-free diets are increasingly well understood. Vegan and gluten-free options are available but can be more limited and at times repetitive, particularly in smaller or more traditional restaurants. Your guide will help communicate your requirements, but it’s important to be flexible and prepared, especially in more rural or remote areas of the island.

Having said all this, the accommodation base where you stay for the entire trip is well used to international travellers and therefore well versed in provision for special dietary requirements, so any meals there will generally not be an issue for those with dietary requirements.

SPECIAL DIETS

Vegetarian

-Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. While many traditional Portuguese dishes include meat or fish, vegetarian options are available and may include vegetable soups, salads, omelettes, rice and bean dishes, grilled vegetables, cheese, bread, and side dishes prepared with olive oil and herbs. Restaurants are generally happy to adapt dishes where possible however, please note that vegetarian diets are not common in rural Madeira, so meal options in certain locations can be basic, repetitive and lacking in protein. Packed lunches are carefully prepared under the guidance of your local host, so are always of good quality and variety.

Vegan

-Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Options may include vegetable soups (without meat stock), salads, rice, grilled or sautéed vegetables, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and dishes prepared with olive oil, garlic and herbs. However, vegan-specific options are much more limited than vegetarian ones, particularly in traditional eateries, so flexibility is important and you should be aware that meal options can be basic, repetitive and lacking in protein. Packed lunches are carefully prepared under the guidance of your local host, so are always of good quality and variety. Please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

Kosher

-Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are extremely rare in Madeira and therefore a Kosher diet cannot be accommodated on this trip. Vegetarian or vegan options are often the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

Halal

-Certified Halal meat is generally not available in Madeira. Vegetarian or vegan options are often the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten Free (for Coeliac, please see Allergies section below)

-Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, options will be more limited than for those without dietary requirements. Portuguese cuisine frequently includes bread, pastries and flour-based products, and awareness of cross-contamination can vary. Meals will typically rely on naturally gluten-free foods such as grilled fish or meat, vegetables, rice, potatoes, salads and vegetables rather than specialist substitutes. Lunch boxes are however carefully prepared under the guidance of your local host, so are always of good quality and variety. Gluten-free specialist products are generally limited outside major supermarkets, so please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

Lactose Free

-Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. While dairy products such as cheese, butter and milk are commonly used, many traditional dishes are naturally lactose-free or can be prepared without dairy. These include grilled fish or meats, vegetable soups, rice dishes, vegetables, salads and vegetables prepared with olive oil rather than butter or cream. Lunch boxes are carefully prepared under the guidance of your local host, so are always of good quality and variety. Please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our CX team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip.

This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

Madeira's subtropical climate earns it the nickname 'the island of eternal spring', with sunshine year-round and mild temperatures in every season.Madeira's subtropical climate earns it the nickname 'the island of eternal spring', with sunshine year-round and mild temperatures in every season. The south and coastal areas tend to be sunnier, while the interior and higher altitudes can bring cooler temperatures, fog and low cloud — so it's important to come prepared for all conditions regardless of when you travel (see our kit list for more information). In winter (December to March), temperatures hover around 20°C (68°F) — still mild enough to swim in the sea or an outdoor pool — though there is a slightly higher chance of rain, particularly in the north. In the mountains, weather can change quickly at any time of year, especially above 1,500m where rain and cold are always a possibility. Packing layers, sunscreen and a good waterproof is essential. Your guide will monitor conditions throughout the trip and will adapt the route if needed to ensure the day remains safe and enjoyable.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 156kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
