Your host will meet you on arrival at Bilbao Airport and drive you to the scenic Asturian town of Cangas de Onis. Meet up with your guides to discuss the challenge ahead, and enjoy a traditional meal with your fellow hikers.

Head off early to the Covadonga Lakes to kick off the trek in the west of the Picos. Hit the trailhead at Pan de Carmen and after an hour or so of hiking, the towering peaks of the western massif reveal themselves. The trail gets a bit rockier and you might spot chamois as you approach the Mirador de Ordiales, an epic viewpoint with a 3280-foot drop to the Angon Valley below. This spot is the final resting place of the founder of the Picos de Europa National Park, Pedro Pidal. Trek up to the Cotalba peak at 6,647 ft, enjoying a cool little scramble just before you hit the top. Once you're up there, the high peaks of the western massif seem so close, and you can spot the lakes in the distance, plus the stunning Ponga Mountains. Descend to the Vegarredonda Refuge for dinner and your first night in the Picos' network of welcoming mountain huts.

    Day 3

    Vegarredonda to Vegabaño

Today is the most challenging day of the trip, so fuel up at the refuge before kicking things off with an ascent to Collado Les Merines at 6,890 ft, entering a huge limestone area through the Pozas Jou. Take a rest at the Prieta spring before continuing past the enormous peak of Vega Huerta and heading south down the Canal del Perro. Descend among the beech trees that surround the Vegabaño refuge, a welcome refuge after a killer day. Soak up this beautiful spot – next to the source of the Dobra River and by the thousand-year-old oak tree of Vegabaño – with sundowners, dinner and an overnight stay at the refuge.

    Day 4

Vegabaño to Santa Marina de Valdeon, via Jario peak

Bid farewell to the Vegabaño refuge and enter a beech grove, going up a gentle slope and passing the habitat of capercaillie birds. Time for another summit: hike steadily up to the peak of Jario at 6,276 ft. Separated from the rest of the massif by large meadows, you'll find an extraordinary viewpoint here, from which you'll see the summits of the Picos de Europa. Continue through the virgin woodland up to Dobres Rock, before starting your descent into the Valdeon Valley all the way to the village of Caldevilla. Follow the course of the Cares River to the village of Posada de Valdeón for a late lunch back in civilization, before carrying on to the small village of Santa Marina de Valdeon to settle into the refuge here for dinner and another well-earned sleep.

    Day 5

Enjoy the views from one of the Picos' most beautifully located refuges this morning with a coffee and breakfast before taking a short transfer to the Pandetrave mountain pass and continuing by farm track to Valcavao. Today's section is a wonderful route from Valcabao to Collado Jermoso mountain hut via the Canal de Pedabejo, trekking through the spectacular Vega de Liordes and along the cliffs of Colladinas until arriving at Collado Jermoso. The refuge here is blessed with sweeping views of the Valdeón valley and the Western Massif, and sunsets here are often spectacular.

One last epic day of trekking in the Picos awaits today as you head toward the finish line. Set off from Collado Jermoso mountain hut and retrace your steps until Las Colladinas, which marks the start point of an ascent to the fabulous summit of La Padiorna (7,608 ft) with stunning views of the whole Central Massif and Liebana Valley. Descend via the Canal de San Luis traversing a lunar landscape in this high part of the massif, all the way to the cable car station. Hop in the cable car and enjoy a brisk 2,460 ft descent in a matter of minutes down to Fuente Dé at the foot of the mountain range. Take a short drive to Espinama to settle into your guesthouse back in civilization after a wild week in the mountains. Detailed Logistics

Transfers

Please arrive at Bilbao airport by 16:00 on Day 1 in order to join the group transfer to Cangas de Onis for your first night. On Day 7, your host will provide a group transfer from Espinama back to Bilbao airport, dropping you off at approximately 12:00 (midday).

If you are arriving/departing at different times, on different days or flying to/from alternative airports (Asturias Airport or Santander Airport) your host can arrange private airport transfers for an additional charge, subject to availability. Please see Optional Extras for prices.

Travel options

Bilbao Airport is accessible via various direct flights from the UK and mainland Europe. Flights from outside of Europe are typically indirect. If you're looking to make your own way to Cangas de Onis and not use the group transfer at Bilbao Airport, you may wish to look into combining flight options into/out of Asturias, Santander and Bilbao airports, all of which are only an hour or two's drive away from Cangas de Onis, with public transport options between them.

Rail travelers can get to the start of this trip via Bilbao's main railway station, Bilbao Abando, which is well connected to various major cities in Spain and France. From Bilbao you can get as far as Arriondas by train, and from there it's a short bus ride to Cangas de Onis.

If you would like to book extra nights' lodging – in Cangas de Onis before the tour, or in Espinama after the tour – please contact your host for availability and prices (which tends to vary throughout the season).

Trip level explained

Level 5

Challenging

This is a significant trek, comparable to the famous trails like the Tour du Mont Blanc in terms of distance and elevation gain and the general level of fitness needed. You'll be doing five consecutive days of hiking between 6-9 hours per day with up to 3,600 ft elevation gain and loss to achieve each day, so you'll need to be comfortable with doing this on a mixture of terrain from easygoing dirt trails and pastures, to the tougher-going limestone rock areas in the higher mountain areas. You won't need any technical mountaineering knowledge but some experience of multi-day trekking will be useful, however as long as you are fit and determined with good hiking boots and a comfortable pack to trek with, this trip can be done by anyone just with some experience of long day hikes. There are some light scrambles to reach the summits along the route, no experience is needed for these and an expert guide is there to help if there are any sections where you feel you need a hand. The highest point on the route is La Padiorna at 7,550 ft. You will also need to factor in carrying your belongings in a backpack – see below.

What will I need to carry?

From Day 2 to Day 6 you will need to carry all of your necessary gear for five trekking days and four overnights in the mountain and village refuges. In addition to clothes and toiletries, you will also need to carry drinking water and a packed lunch each day.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transportation to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before traveling.

All travelers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

Where You'll Stay

Looking for a private room? See Optional Extras for details and pricing.

  • Cangas de Onis

    Stay

    Cangas de Onis

Your first night of the trip is spent at Hotel Los Lagos Nature in the center of the picturesque town of Cangas de Onis, which sits at the foot of the Picos and on the banks of the Sella River. Housed in a historic building with a characterful bar and restaurant, you'll stay in twin-share rooms with ensuite bathrooms.

  • Collado-Jermoso-01

    Mountain and Village Refuges

    Stay

    Mountain and Village Refuges

You'll spend three nights at different mountain refuges within the Picos de Europa National Park – namely Refugios Vegarredonda, Collado Jermoso, and Vegabaño – staying in mixed dorm-style bunk rooms shared by 8-12 people. You should be aware that the mountain refuges offer only basic facilities for trekkers, both in terms of home comforts and food options. The refuges have an electricity supply, but bringing a personal power bank is recommended. There are shared toilet facilities and showers available to use, although be aware that some refuges charge a small amount for hot water showers. The refuges will serve your evening meal and breakfast, and you'll also be able to buy your lunch from them each day before setting off. Card payments are not always accepted, so you should bring cash.

You'll also spend one night in a village refuge – the Refugio La Ardilla Real in Santa Marina de Valdeón. As it's a little less remote, this refuge is of a higher comfort level, more like a B&B with smaller dorms and a cozy restaurant and bar. Your host will try to arrange a same-sex sharing basis for this night, depending on availability.

  • Espinama

    Stay

    Espinama

After the more rustic stays at the mountain refuges, you'll stay at Hostal Remoña in Espinama, a charming guesthouse in a quaint village nestled under the Picos – not far from where the road comes to an end, as it meets the impassable mountains. The guesthouse is well known for its homemade, traditional Cantabrian food and extensive wine list, which you'll enjoy while taking in the views of the Picos. You'll stay in twin-share rooms with private bathrooms.

Food and Dietary info

Catering in the mountain huts is a simple affair, with limited options available for travelers who have dietary requirements (due to the mountainous locations of the refuges, supplies are flown in by helicopter just twice a season and fresh produce is not practical for storage). Breakfasts in the refuges can be basic, so you may wish to stock up before the trek begins on supplementary items such as fruit, nuts or cheese. In the evenings, you'll keep fueled with simple but very hearty dinners that typically consist of pasta, lentils, chickpeas, soups and meat-based dishes. Lunches are not included in the trip price, but you can buy your own each morning before the day's trekking either from local bakeries, or directly from the mountain refuges. You should budget around €15-20 per day for lunches and snacks, and it is best to have this in cash (Euros). If you like to eat a lot of snacks while hiking then it is recommended to bring your own stash – but factor this in to your packing weight. On the first and final days of the trip, your evening meals will be local specialties in restaurants selected by your guide. You'll enjoy a variety of tapas and pintxos (small traditional snacks popular across northern Spain), a main course usually with fish or meat, dessert and local wines.

Asturias is famous for its milk, so there are plenty of cheeses to sample throughout the trip. Another local Asturian specialty is cider; you can attempt the traditional pouring method - raising the bottle above your head and pouring into the glass from a height, so as to carbonate the cider while holding the glass low in your other hand. This is more challenging than the locals make it look!

If you have any dietary requirements, intolerances or allergies, please check the FAQ below: ‘Can my dietary requirements be catered for on this adventure?’ for specific advice relating to this trip. The availability of foods you may get at home varies in different destinations, so please read the FAQ in full before making your booking to ensure that this trip can accommodate your dietary needs.

Just back from a wonderful week in the mountains with a great group of people. Such a great escape and reset. The guides were brilliant full of information about the area and wildlife as well as planning great routes. Nothing beats the cameraderie of staying in mountain huts which all provided excellent food and were very accommodating of me being vegetarian. Would absolutely recommend this trip!

It was a fantastic 7 days with our fantastic local guides who were knowledgable, funny, patient and helpful. Unique landscape and scenery, amazing fauna, and a totally enjoyable week!

Amazing guides, fantastic views and memories for a life time! The trek was moderate/challenging but made so much easier with the help of Alejandro and Joao. I am celiac/strict gluten free and they took that very seriously and advocated for me which didn’t go unnoticed. Would recommend any hiker to do this trip. The Picos is a wonderful place.

I just came back from the Picos - adventure of a lifetime! Our guides Alejandro and João were so lovely and knowledgable about the area. They supported everyone in the group and paced the hike perfectly so we all had a lovely time. The views were fantastic and it was wonderful getting to know so many great people on the trek!

  • Alasdair

Really stunning trek in absolutely beautiful scenery of picos. Our guides Sergio and txetxu were truly brilliant - keeping it fun and ensuring positive vibes while also making sure everyone was having a good time and getting everyone through the trickier parts. It is a really fun and challenging hike, with varied terrain, sometimes scrambling & scree, requiring stamina and determination (especially in a July heatwave) but so rewarding with brilliant views and vibes. Really not overrun with tourists and it felt a lot of the time we had the place to ourselves which was a very welcome surprise! The huts are in beautiful spots, some with pretty compact & communal sleeping spots - at 6ft4 my feet were rarely in the bed… but not surprising and all part of the experience. Seeing traditional villages of the region towards the end an added bonus. Had an absolute blast with our group who were a great bunch & worthy Yahtzee opponents!

Super fun and challenging trek! Highlights: - Guides Sergio and Txetxu full of laughs, taught us about the mountains and local culture. Balanced taking amazing care of the group with having a good time with us seamlessly. - Great group, couldn't have asked for a more fun, laid-back dynamic. - Exploring an area that I had never even heard of before the trip! Also meant that it wasn't super crowded. As my group-mates said, it's definitely challenging, particularly if you get hot weather as we did. But well worth it for the views and the sense of accomplishment!

  • Judy K.

The Picos de Europa hut to hut trek far exceeded my expectations. The unending limestone peaks, clear blue skies, fun challenging scrambles and the quiet, remote trails made one feel transported. Saying that, it is important to remember that the trip is rated level 5 for a reason. Read the description closely to ensure this the trip for you. It is challenging, but 100% worth the effort and the sense of accomplishment. Sergio and Txetxu, our guides, are exceptional!!! They take their responsibilities as leaders seriously. Every evening we met to discuss the considerations for the next day. They were consistently sensitive to the needs of each trekker, regardless of the issue, and took steps to ensure all members of the group were properly supported. Sergio and Txetxu are super fun, hilarious, kind humans and a big part of why the trip left such an impression. We were fortunate to have a wonderful group and these two individuals as our guides. I highly recommend this trek. If you take it on, work on your descending skills. ; ) Happy trekking!

Xtextu "Stop faffing around people" and Sergio "It's easy" were absolutely amazing throughout. 100% engaged in making your trip a success. Please do your due dilligence by reading both the reviews and trip description a number of times, before booking. Although graded as a 5, during the summer months the heat could render this expedition at least a 5. 5. Mountain huts are huts and not luxury hotels. One or two bathrooms to share between many people, basic local food and multiple shared beds. The same the World over, it has to be said. Day 2 was my fave but all days included something challenging. The hut at Collado Jermoso is simply breathtaking on Day 5. Whether crossing, descending or ascending scree, scrambling albeit relatively easily in protected locations or undertaking a long trek amongst almost entirely rocky terrain, the Picos do not disappoint. Pack light, pack a sense of humour and above all, pack stamina, strength and humility.

  • Rachel G.

I had a wonderful time on this trek, the nature was stunning, otherworldly at times and constantly varying. The two guides Txetxu and Sergio really made the trip perfect, always prepared and making us laugh every step of the way. I could not have asked for a better pair than those two, they work quite well together and balance each other out in the best way. The hiking is definitely difficult, there is lots of elevation gain & loss, some scrambling & light rock climbing, and at times rocky paths which require lots of focus when going down. I would say this hike is probably a level 5. 5 - definitely type 2 fun at times but so worth it! We always felt very accomplished when overcoming the more difficult parts and were well supported by the guides the entire way. This is a beautiful trek located in a lesser known park, resulting in uncrowded paths and genuine local experiences. Would definitely recommend!

This trip was amazing. The views were incredible and our guides, Irene and Oscar, were informative to the group about the days plan and the national park whether it was history, geology or animals. Our guides were great at accommodating dietary needs and anticipating speeds/breaks for the whole group if needed. The views were beautiful throughout the entire trip and a great challenge to those who enjoy hiking! The routes were incredibly fun and I really enjoyed the contrast in terrain on day 2. The route and hut on day 4 really live up to its ‘Jermoso’ name! I highly recommend this trip to anyone interested. Thank you for the great memories!

  • Amazing trek with the best guides

    Magda July 2026
The trek was great from start to finish - beautiful scenery, knowledgeable guides and a fabulous team. The difficulty/challenge level was perfectly in line with the provided descriptor: a reasonably fit, steady-footed and determined person can do this for sure. But do pack reasonably! Irene and Oscar were such an amazing pair of guides, definitely among the best I've ever met. I felt very secure in their hands, especially on the more difficult terrain where they provided clear guidance and support. They also provided us with some great advice both before the departure (like packing tips) as well as during our evening briefings. Definitely take their tips to heart! They really went above and beyond, not only patiently leading, but also sharing their knowledge and experience, and often simply having interesting and fun chats with us. Their great personalities truly added something special to the trek's atmosphere. The huts were as described: very simple. Depending on which bed you end up in, you might have to practically share a bed with another person - either because the narrow beds are pushed together or in one instance we slept on double mattresses. So just make sure to take ear plugs and an eye mask and maybe prepare for a couple of challenging nights. Food in the refuges was overall decent - some meals were better, some worse (one breakfast featured just bread and jam - that was by far the lowest meal point), but certainly all were abundant so at least you won't go hungry. All huts had showers, though in the first one hot water was not available (it didn't matter as we were roasting anyway). The most important was the trek itself: otherworldly, breathtaking views; curious chamois roaming the limestone, happy cows and horses scattered around meadows, and all that we could enjoy with very few other people around (only in the huts). It was definitely worth it, and I cannot recommend enough!

I was so excited to go on this journey until the mountains introduced themselves to me…. 😄😄😄The most beautiful views, I must say. Marie and I, could not have asked for better guides/host - Sergio and Txetxu - you guys are amazing… I am sure you learnt a new kind of patience from our pace😄😄😄… First time was hard, so we would definitely do it again until we can say, “no big deal😄”. And our entire team was the best, no dull moment… Let’s do it again💪🏽
  • Absolutely magical

    Esme July 2026
Don’t really know where to begin but this week will go down as one of my favourites of all time. I’ve climbed and trekked all over the world but the Picos de Europa did not disappoint. It’s staggeringly beautiful. A decent challenge on the physical side. The guides were exceptional- motivating, kind and very funny. Thank you Sergio and Txetxu, you are wonderful people. I adored the group- we bonded so beautifully. Definitely found a group of new friends! Food is carb heavy and protein light of you’re a veggie but it’s manageable for a week. Pack as little as possible. Most of all- do the trip, it’s a gem.
  • Brilliant from start to finish

    Rob A. June 2026
My second MBA trip and it didn’t disappoint. From start to end everything worked perfectly, the hiking and scenery was amazing, the huts and food fitted the feeling of living in the mountains for a week, I wouldn’t change a thing. We had a great group led by the amazing guides Sergio and Txetxu who were not only knowledgeable and made you feel safe they were great people to be away with. Definitely recommend this trip, travel as light as you can to help on those climbs.

Fantastic trip! Felt like a real hidden gem of a mountain range. Spectacular scenery and amazing to stay in the refuges in amongst the mountains. As well as being super knowledgeable and great company, the guides Sergio and Txetxu were also patient and understanding of struggles with the high temperatures. Trip of a lifetime!
  • Just WOW!

    Katie June 2026
Fantastic adventure in the Picos. Bonded quickly with the group. Local guides Sergio and Txetxu were looked after the group well and introduced us to history and geography of the region. The routes were beautiful, but challenging in places with long ascents and scrambling. The refuges offered basic standard and hearty food (be ready for a lot of carbs). 😁 You will need it. I would not recommend this for the beginners. Pack only absolute essentials, wear comfortable shoes and socks, mosquito repellent must have.

Despite the furnace like temperatures, I had a fabulous time. Guides were knowledgeable and great company as were my fellow hikers. Would thoroughly recommend booking on this trip.
  • Pico de Europa Review - First Time Hikers 👀

    Marie L. June 2026
If you’re looking for an adventure that will push you beyond your limits while rewarding you with some of the most breathtaking scenery you’ll ever experience, the Pico de Europa Hut-to-Hut Trek is it. This was my very first multi-day hiking experience, and to say it challenged me would be an understatement. Every single day tested me physically and mentally. There were countless moments—probably over a hundred on the first day alone—when I wanted to quit. Between the relentless climbs, the blazing heat, developing heat exhaustion, feeling sick, aching muscles, and painful blisters, I genuinely questioned whether I could finish. Thankfully, we had two extraordinary guides: Textxu and Sergio. I truly cannot say enough about these two incredible men. Their patience, encouragement, professionalism, and genuine care for every member of our group made all the difference. They never rushed anyone or made anyone feel like a burden. Instead, they allowed each of us to hike at our own pace while providing guidance, motivation, and ensuring everyone’s safety throughout the journey. A very special thank you goes to Txetxu, whose kindness and nurturing spirit did not go unnoticed. When my feet developed painful blisters, he took the time to carefully treat and wrap them so I could continue hiking with less pain. Those small acts of compassion meant more than he probably realizes. When I was struggling from the intense heat and feeling physically unwell, both he and Sergio constantly checked in to make sure I was okay. Their encouragement carried me farther than my legs alone ever could. My sister, Esther, and I will never forget their support. The huts themselves were part of the adventure. As a first-time hut-to-hut hiker, it definitely took some adjusting. The first accommodations were a bit rough for me, but each stop became more comfortable, and by the end of the trek, several of the huts were wonderful places to relax after such demanding days. One suggestion I would offer is that, when possible, it might be nice to arrange sleeping accommodations with women bunking with women and men with men. I understand communal huts are part of this style of trekking, but I think that small consideration would make many first-time hikers feel even more comfortable. The food wasn’t gourmet, but it was hearty, filling, and exactly what tired hikers needed after long days on the trail. Breakfast was consistently available to fuel us each morning, and every evening offered a welcoming atmosphere where we could unwind over dinner, enjoy a glass of wine or local liqueur, laugh together, and celebrate another day’s accomplishment. Those evenings became some of my favorite memories. The villages, mountain huts, restaurants, and the camaraderie of the entire group created an atmosphere I’ll never forget. We laughed together, encouraged one another, and yes—sometimes we cried through the pain—but those shared moments made the experience even more meaningful. Would I do it again? Without hesitation—absolutely. Next time, I’d simply pack a little lighter! Every unnecessary pound in my backpack felt twice as heavy on those climbs. But that’s all part of the learning experience. The return on investment for this adventure is impossible to measure. The towering peaks, endless mountain vistas, quiet valleys, unforgettable conversations, moments of perseverance, and friendships created along the trail are memories that will stay with me for the rest of my life. Thank you, Txetxu and Sergio, for believing in me when I wasn’t sure I believed in myself. You didn’t just guide us through the Picos de Europa—you helped us discover what we were capable of. That is a gift I will never forget. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Five stars. Highly recommended.
  • A must do in the Picos.

    Jay V. June 2026
Where should I start ? The group amazing. The guides Sergio and Txetxu - Phenomenally amazing. Why you ask ? Because their priorities were keeping the group safe and making sure the group is having fun. They made sure everything was as smooth and fun as possible and they were patient and knowledgeable. They shared and lore and myths of the locals, told us what to expect the next day and everything. The itinerary was great as well. Like a few hours of certain days were a bit challenging but that’s something you expect from a trip like this. To summarise if I had to do this again, I’d book it without hesitation and would hope I get Sergio and txetxu as guides again 😂
  • Fantastic holiday with wonderful guides!

    Maeve June 2026
I had a fantastic time with the hut-to-hut MBA Picos tour. Right from the start our guides Sergio and Txetxu were brilliant at looking after everyone, explaining Spanish culture & cuisine and prioritising our safety in these beautiful, wild mountains. The walks were tough at times, especially in the hot conditions so the guides had thoughtfully planned 2 options depending on how people were feeling. They also helped us to scramble over difficult sections and even attended to my blistered feet! This meant that I was able to complete the hikes and had a wonderful time. The refuges were lovely, the food was plentiful and the scenery is stunning! Would love to come back to the area again in future! Thank you to MBA and to Sergio and Txetxu for a fantastic holiday!
  • Experience of a lifetime. Guides of a lifetime!!

  • Superb week of trekking in amazing terrain

    Simon L. June 2026
The Picos Europa mountains are spectacular, this trekking trip is well run and faultless in organisation from start to finish. The guides were brilliant, their knowledge and passion for this region made the week so enjoyable. The trekking was well planned, each days route was a nice challenge but not too much. The mountain huts are an experience and the hostel mid week was a nice change.
  • The most incredible experience!

    Catherine W. June 2026
I had the most incredible time on this trek through the stunning Picos de Europa. I had never done anything like this before, but with the great guides and the fantastic group, it was an experience like no other. Mentally and physically challenging at times, but so so rewarding, and just the most epic adventure. I miss the mountains already! I will definitely be doing more hiking in the future thanks to this brilliant experience.
  • Great trip trekking through the Picos!

    Stef June 2026
I didn't know much about the area before going on this trip, but the Picos de Europa were beautiful and provided really varied landscapes. The itinerary and accomodation on the mountains themselves allowed us to experience this to the fullest. Our two guides, Alejandro and Alberto, were fantastic - incredibly helpful and knowledgeable about the area, as well as taking time to socialise with the group during treks and downtime.
  • Fantastic trip with great guides

Everything about the trip was excellent from the scenery and the mountain huts to the very helpful and friendly guides. Highly recommended!
  • Great guides, great scenery,

    Simon June 2026
Alberto and Alejandro were both very kind, very knowledgeable and always set the right pace with the right number of rest stops. The Picos national park is a stunning landscape with soaring peaks and quaint unspoilt villages. The trek is quite tough in places and requires a decent level of fitness, but I would recommend it to anyone who is ready for a nice challenge and a fun experience.
  • Trekking to keep in the memory

Wonderful route, cozy huts, professionalism from Alberto and Alejandro. Could not have been better. Thanks to all involved in this program.
  • Hut to hut trekking in Picos de Europa

    Teresa H. June 2026
This was a really well organised trip from pick up to drop off. Alejandro and Alberto were knowledgable and enthusiastic and it was a pleasure to be guided by them. It was a physically demanding adventure with some scrambling and climbs, but well worth the effort! Views were amazing and it was great to get together with like minded people. My highlights were seeing the Chamoix and other wildlife up close in their natural habitat in an unspoiled landscape. I would highly recommend this trip for hikers who like a challenging landscape with great guides.

Wonderful walking, in spectacular mountains with our superb guides - Jamie and trainee guide Doro. Jamie led with a confident, but delicate touch, pacing perfectly. His love of and pride in his home Picos mountains was lovely to see and learn from. On tricky terrain he guided with patience and kindness. Doro was also supportive and thoughtful, offering useful tips which certainly helped. The rest of the group was also great company, full of good humour and a joy to walk with. Guided walking allowed me to enjoy the challenge without worrying about logistics and navigation. A truely unforgettable week. Thank you all!
  • Amazing Trip

Highly recommend this trip! Our guides, Jaime and Doro, were lovely people who were cheerful, accommodating, and knowledgeable. The Picos are stunning and I’m sure anyone would have an amazing time there.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully before your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form ASAP with any dietary requirements. BACKGROUND

Spain’s cuisine is shaped by a mix of Mediterranean agriculture, regional climates, and a long history of trade and cultural exchange, resulting in varied, seasonal dishes that often center on olive oil, vegetables, seafood, and cured meats. This diversity means travelers with dietary requirements can often find suitable options, particularly in larger towns, though menus can be meat- and dairy-heavy in some regions. Vegetarian and gluten-free choices are increasingly understood, but it helps to plan ahead and communicate needs clearly, with a guide on hand to assist where language or local customs present challenges.

The weather in the Picos de Europa can be very changeable, so be sure to pack for all weather. Mainly it tends to be dry and sunny on the south face of the Picos and at high altitudes over 4,900 ft. Lower altitudes and on the north face of the Picos are more humid and sometimes rainy. The maximum temperature is around 68°F and the minimum around 46-54°F. Perfect trekking temperatures!

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 150kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
