Paddle along stunning volcanic coastline, and wild camp on white sand beaches and islet-studded sea lochs

Discover hidden bays and wild skerries, eyes peeled for otters, porpoises, seals and sea eagles

Forage for shellfish, seaweed, and coastal plants, and brave the Atlantic Ocean for a cold water swim

One of the "Best adventure holidays in the UK for adrenaline seekers" according to The Independent

Key Information

Day 1

To the ocean!

Castle Tioram, a ruined castle on a tidal island in Loch Moidart, Scotland

Kayaking

3hrs · 8km

Driving

2.5hrs

Please note, the route below is a sample itinerary. The actual route you paddle will be subject to the weather conditions at the time. The guides also vary the routes and camp spots used throughout the season to minimize environmental impact on any one location.

Meet your host and fellow adventurers in Inverness, the northernmost city in Scotland and a great place to start your adventure in the Scottish Highlands. Jump in the van and make your way south, along the shores of Loch Ness and past Urquhart Castle – keep your eyes peeled for Nessie. Your destination today is Kinlochmoidart on Scotland's West Coast, a small settlement found on the remote Ardnamurchan Peninsula. On arrival, pack and launch your kayak onto the sheltered water of Loch Moidart for an introductory paddling and skills session, before gliding past the ruined Castle Tioram, a 13th-century fortress. After a few hours of paddling, you'll set up camp on the beach and enjoy your first night under the stars.

Day 2

To the beautiful beach of Smirisary

Kayaking

6hrs · 18km

Today is all about building your skills and exploring the refugeed bays and islands of Moidart. You'll gradually wind your way northward along rocky shores, hearing local folklore tales as you go. After a relaxed lunch stop, it's time to explore the entrance to Loch Ailort before crossing to the Ardnish peninsula and searching for a spot to camp for the night. The sunset from here is spectacular, all the more appreciated perched by the campfire.

Day 3

The Sound of Arisaig

Kayaking

6hrs · 15km

Kickstart the morning with a fresh swim in the Atlantic then hop back in your kayak to continue steadily north and west across the mouth of Loch nan Uamh, taking some time to forage in the rocks and pools at low tide. The final wild camp will be in the wonderful islet-studded Sound of Arisaig, protected by hundreds of small tidal islands known as skerries, this is a spectacular spot for your final night under the Milky Way.

Day 4

Final paddle and swim

View of a group of friends walking out into the ocean while open water swimming at dawn, in the UK.

Kayaking

2hrs · 7km

Another early morning sea dip for the brave before paddling for a couple more hours through the hidden sea lochs of Arisaig. You’ll reach a small road before lunch where you'll pack up and hit the road back to Inverness ready for your trip home.

Afternoon on Day 4

Transfers

You’ll meet your host in central Inverness at 08:30 on Day 1, in the car park at the Tesco Metro on Tomnahurich Street. You will then be transferred by minibus to the start point of the expedition; the drive will take about 2.5 hours. We recommend you arrive in Inverness the night before to ensure you don't miss your transfer.

Your trip will end in Inverness mid-afternoon of Day 4. Your host will transfer you to either Inverness Train Station, Inverness Bus Station, or your accommodation in Inverness. From central Inverness, it's easy to get a 25-minute taxi ride to Inverness Airport to catch a flight from late afternoon onwards. Please don't book any onward travel before 17:00, in case of bad weather which could result in a delayed arrival into Inverness.

It is also possible for your host to drop you off near Fort William at the end of the trip. Please request this directly after making your booking, if it's required.

Travel options

Inverness is well served by train routes and flights. There is a daily Virgin Trains East Coast from London King’s Cross to Inverness, and a number of route options within Scotland with ScotRail. The Caledonian Sleeper also offers an overnight service direct to Inverness starting at London Euston, with stops at Crewe and Preston. There are also direct flights to Inverness from across the UK.

What is the food like?

Cooking pot on a fire.

You'll enjoy fresh, quality, tasty meals throughout the expedition. For breakfast, there'll be cereal or oatmeal with various toppings, as well as hot drinks. For lunch, you can expect wraps with a whole host of tasty fillings, fruit, and some treats to keep you going. At dinner time, you can expect to refuel after an active day with a three-course meal – appetizers might include Scottish smoked salmon, pâtés, and oatcakes; mains will include fresh ingredients like fish, meats, and vegetables; dessert could be strawberries and clotted cream with shortbread, or cake and custard. Snacks and drinks will also be available between meals.

Vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary requirements can be catered for, please just request this in advance on your passenger info form.

What is the accommodation like?

Wild camp setup with kayaks on the West Coast of Scotland.
Wilderness Camp

You’ll wild camp in twin-share tents in remote, beautiful spots by the lochside and on the beaches. Accommodation is basic but the beautiful locations far make up for the lack of facilities. On most trips, your host provides a portable camping toilet for use at each of the wild camping spots. Small and packable, this camping toilet allows waste to be packed-out and disposed of properly when facilities are available (see the FAQs for more info). Single tents are available upon request at no extra cost.

Upgrades

For solo travellers wanting their own personal space, you can request your own private tent on the trip at no extra cost (subject to availability) – please just request this when booking.

This trip has been rated as Moderate

You can expect up to six hours of paddling each day, so a good level of overall fitness and stamina is required. Sea conditions can be changeable and certain choppy or windy conditions may make the paddling and distances more challenging. Needless to say, you should come prepared to encounter some waves. For safety reasons, to join this trip, you must be able to swim a distance of at least 80 feet (although you will be given a buoyancy aid). This is also a participatory camping trip, so you'll need to help with putting up and breaking down camp throughout the trip. You will also need to participate with moving the kayaks, paddles and equipment to and from the shoreline. It's all part of the adventure!

This trip is totally suitable for beginner or intermediate level sea kayakers; however, you really do not need any previous kayaking experience as full training will be provided at the beginning of the trip and while on the water. You will be in a single kayak by default. If you don’t have much kayaking experience or aren’t confident in paddling your own boat, you can request a tandem kayak from your host; these are subject to availability and dependent upon someone else being happy to paddle tandem with you, so please request this on your reservation form.

A good level of fitness is required on this trip, and building some arm strength beforehand can help with sea kayaking. Hip mobility is also important. Accompanying cardio and flexibility training will help you be in the best shape possible to enjoy this trip.

The Scottish summer is usually warm, but you can expect some rain, even if it's just a little. Prepare for anything and think ‘layers'. Conditions in April and May will be slightly cooler, with the potential for frost at night. Gear-wise, the main thing is a warm sleeping bag, or an additional bag liner if you feel the cold more.

Great adventure

Had a great time. The weather dictated we go inland rather than the coast but can’t argue with the weather. Nevertheless, Stew made sure we still had a great time paddling up the great glen. Spectacular scenery, good food and a really memorable trip. Loved it.

Due to the weather we ended up covering a lot of the Great Glen Way, but out was superb. Stew from IYE was so organised, a fab cook and a great host. He also made sure we were all happy and confident in the conditions we had. The group were all lovely too and I can't wait to book another trip.

This trip was amazing and I would 100% recommend. The scenery was incredible and it was not too physically demanding. Some tips:

  • If you are not familiar with Scotland, please google Midges in Scotland and plan accordingly. I would suggest a full midge suit. Anywhere that is not covered will get bitten. Bug spray WILL NOT help. Smidge spray allegedly prevents them from biting you.
  • If you are an avid camper, I would suggest bringing your own kit. The kit they provide is mid-level Alpkit and is pretty good, but I would have been more comfortable in my own tent on my own sleeping pad. Do not buy your own kit if you don't already have it! This is just if you have your own, high-quality stuff.
  • Bring clothing for every weather type. On our trip I wore a bikini during the day and had to layer up with wool socks, a buff, a puffer, and gloves in the evening.
  • Get a waterproof bag for your phone so you can have it on top of your kayak for easy access for photos. You can take it out of the bag for photos, but it would have been nicer if my phone were more accessible.
  • Your hands may blister! Potential consider wearing bike or lifting gloves. The host will have blister tape if so.
  • Bring extra carabiners and a clothesline w/ clips. You will have a lot of wet clothes you'll want to dry and stuff you want to clip to your boat!

I was lucky enough to join this amazing kayak tour. Everything was perfectly organized. Our guide was incredibly friendly, always helpful, and took great care of us. His kayaking instructions were super clear, which really helped me since I was pretty much a beginner.

The landscape was absolutely beautiful, and we found cozy little remote spots along the shore to set up camp – often with small sandy beaches. One evening we watched the sunset with tea or wine by a campfire. We even saw seals up close!

Our guide Lukas cooked delicious meals on a camping stove – seriously impressive.

All in all, it was an awesome trip and I’d recommend it to anyone. (I came from Germany and flew to Edinburgh. From there there is a beatiful train connection to Inverness that leeds through the Highlands. ) Thank you again.

A truly magnificent trip that was both relaxing and adventurous. We were fortunate enough to be blessed with decent weather, making the paddling an easy going time where we could take in the beautiful surroundings. We were fortunate enough to see an abundance of wildlife including seals, sea otters, porpoises and jellyfish.

Our guides, Scott and Lukas, were awesome and made the trip even more memorable. Their knowledge of both the history of the land and local fauna and flora was really informative and interesting to learn. I also need to give additional mention to the incredible meals Scott prepared for us at the camp sites which had everyone rushing back for seconds.

Magical adventure
Magical adventure

In the depths of winter I needed some inspiration and something to look forward to so I booked this kayaking trip. I had some trepidation as little experience of sea kayaking and I booked for April taking a chance on the weather. I am so glad I did. The trip was the best thing I have done in years. It was so so so much fun! The adventure takes you to remote sandy beaches through seas with abundant wildlife.

Our guide Scott was superb, his cooking was amazing (fantastic paneer curry!) and he had extensive knowledge of the geography and wildlife. Special thanks also go to Brenda for her homemade chilli which was delicious. Another guide Lukas came along on the trip and he was excellent too. The other travellers were all like minded and we had great evenings relaxing by the fire singing, drinking whisky and toasting marshmallows.

On the final morning we kayaked through the Arisaig Skerries and as I looked around and marvelled at the beauty of nature I knew that I needed to go on more adventures like this one. I was sad when we finally loaded the kayaks on the trailer to go home but am fully resolved to book my next kayaking trip. If you are thinking of going on this adventure, don't hesitate, just book it!

Thanks for such a memorable and magical experience.

Brilliant expedition

This was a great first expedition for me. Everything was really well planned, even though I joined last minute, all the main kit was provided, and our guide, Elliot, was fun (although terrible Dad jokes) and informative. We saw some really striking coastline and the occasional seal, camped on beautiful beaches and ate really well (also helped that we got lucky with the weather). Would definitely recommend. Thanks, Elliot and Scott!

Finding inner peace out in the wilderness

This trip was so special for me, it combined stunning landscape, exciting paddling and lots of laughs with the group. We even had sunny weather! Our guide Elliott was so capable and was so chilled out that everyone felt comfortable and safe. He also cooked lots of delicious food and very importantly provided plenty of coffee. My personal top tip for this trip is to volunteer to carry the snack bag in your kayak! ;)

I wish I hadn't waisted the last 2 years looking for a friend to join me on a kayak adventure. Amazing!

The trip was all I hoped for and more! It was sufficiently challenging yet enjoyable and fun, the guide was fantastically knowledgeable and talented, the meals were unbelievable and the company great. Even the weather turned out great despite the grim forecast. We had some showers which was cool for some very atmospheric photography. The sunsets. The sunrises. The wildlife. Still sorting out the million of photos and already feeling like I need to do it again!

An amazing 4 days kayaking and camping in Scottish waters. Sometimes out of my comfort zone, 4 seasons of weather in 4 days, stunning scenery and fantastic camaraderie. Our guide was fantastic - local historical and geological information, kayaking guide and instructor, chef and more - the food was fantastic!!! Be prepared to get wet and work hard, but very worthwhile trip that will live long in the memory.

A change from sea to inland kayaking - a mix of fabulous and not so ……….

Our West Coast trip was changed at short notice to the Great Glens due to adverse weather conditions. The kayaking was fabulous, but unfortunately the tents failed in the extreme weather and the porterage at locks was arduous. We opted out of the leaking tents on the third night to take refuge in a local guest house. In better weather it could have been wonderful, but this wasn’t that trip.

Reply from Much Better Adventures  (07 October 2024)

Thanks for taking the time to provide us with your feedback.

We are very sorry that your group was affected by the poor weather on the West Coast that weekend, and that it was necessary for you to do a different itinerary instead. Unfortunately this situation can occur occasionally, and we do forewarn customers of this possibility on the trip page. Nonetheless, we appreciate that it must have been disappointing for your group to not complete the trip as planned.

We would like to apologise that the tents you were given were not up to our usual standards. Our host has assured us that all equipment is fully serviced and checked prior to each departure, however on the back of this feedback, they have plans to put in place a more robust maintenance process for future seasons.

I understand that our customer experience team have been in touch with you directly to acknowledge your feedback, and we do hope to welcome you back on another MBA adventure in the near future.

What a wonderful trip! The scenery along the coast was stunning and we were blessed with fabulous weather. Rachy, our expert guide, took care of everything, including some amazing food, and made sure we were all safe. Couldn’t have wished for a nicer group of people too, we had a great time. I have many happy memories but probably the standout for me was being surrounded by a group of friendly inquisitive seals in quiet, calm, peaceful waters. Highly recommended!

First time doing a guided group trip, and it was great! Our amazing guide Stew was very knowledgeable, kept us well-fed and entertained. Stew kept a close eye on the ever changing weather forecast, and despite the conditions, Stew managed to guide us safely to some beautiful beaches 🤩. Really appreciated that he made the effort to do this, as the scenery is what we wanted to experience. He also did very well to cater to the wishes of the group, taking those wanting more ‘action’ out into bigger waves. The group dynamic was great, lots of laughs and easy to get on with everyone. Highly recommend!

Rick D.(July 2024)
Exactly what we wanted.

It was 11+ hours each way driving, the temperature didn't get above 14 degrees and it was too windy and rough for us to really get out onto the sea proper. We had rain and the absolute best time. From the start communication was excellent. This helps a lot , from the kit list to the setting up of a whatsapp group prior to the start. We had a great guide, Stewart. Ours was an older group ( with the exception of my 18 year old Grandson). This was never a problem, he got the most out of us both on and off the water. Definitely made it a trip to remember for both of us.

Andrew H.(June 2024)
Excellent

Superb trip. The weather was not on our side, but Elliot was great at working to flex the plan to make sure we still had a super adventurous 4 days of paddling, taking advantage of some more sheltered conditions through the lochs.

Great food, first class equipment, and would recommend wholeheartedly.

A great adventure

Just returned from an amazing few days! Unfortunately, due to some wild weather we had to adjust our plans and headed up the Great Glen Way. That in no way diminished what was an exhilarating time on the water. Rain, sunshine, wind we had it all. Our guide was Elliott, who was brilliant all round. We felt safe and well looked after with some very tasty (and ingenious given the surroundings) meals served along the way. I can't recommend this enough, just be sure to accept that the elements are often unpredictable and a midget net is an absolute must!!

What an amazing adventure! The scenery was breathtaking and the trip was so well organised. And it helped that the group was a grear bunch of people! Our guide Callum was brilliant, he cooked up a feast every night and had the group laughing the whole time. He also did a great job of keeping up everyone's spirits when the weather changed and the kayaking became more challenging (the weather on the coast changes by the hour so come prepared for wind and rain and sun and midges all in the same day!). The beaches, white sands and views were unforgettable, a properly 'off the beaten track' experience.

An amazing trip. Our guide Stew looked after us so well from start to finish. He was amazing, thank you. Great advice, equipment, food. Always felt safe even when the waves got choppy! Amazing locations along the lochs and coast. The route did have to be amended due to the weather conditions which was understandable, not much you can do as you have to keep safe.

We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

Rose Street Parking Lot in central Inverness is the best option for this trip.

Absolutely! We recognize that you may want to leave some of the luggage you bring to Scotland somewhere safe before you start your expedition. You will be able to leave any non-essential items you don’t want to take on the boat with you at our host's local base.

For comfort and safety reasons, unfortunately we are not able to accommodate people over 250 lbs on this trip. If you have questions regarding this, please speak to our Customer Experience team.

Scotland's weather can be unpredictable, and for this reason, unfortunately it sometimes is not possible to complete the itinerary as described. Our host has several 'Plan B' options if this situation should occur, all of which are thoroughly tried and tested, and still provide an enjoyable paddling experience. In the worst case scenario, if the weather is too poor to paddle safely on the coast, there is usually the option to paddle down the Great Glen Way. Any changes will be communicated to you as soon as possible, although you should be aware that given the nature of the Scottish weather, any decisions generally have to be made at the last minute.

While outdoor toileting is all part of a wilderness adventure, it can negatively impact the surrounding environment if not practiced carefully. To avoid this, on most trips, your host provides a portable camping toilet for use at each of the wild camping spots. Small and packable, this camping toilet allows waste to be packed out and disposed of properly when facilities are available. Not only does this help to minimize impact on the countryside, but many adventurers find it a bit more comfortable! For those who have periods, we have also written this handy guide, to help you manage these while on adventures.

Midges are very tiny winged flies, often found in Northern Scotland between May and October when conditions are damp, humid and warmish. While they don’t have a great reputation, they generally aren’t as bad as they are made out to be: they can be an annoyance, but they don’t carry any diseases. So they're pretty harmless, apart from a small itchy red bite.

They don't like direct sunlight and they can’t fly in anything more than a light wind, so on very sunny or breezy days you're unlikely to be bothered by them. They also don’t like open water, so sea kayaking is a great way to avoid midges!

There are preventative measures you can take if you do find there are some midges around. Wear white or light-coloured clothing – midges are drawn to dark colours. Use a repellent, such as Smidge (a DEET-free insect repellent developed in Scotland) – Avon's Skin So Soft is also often recommended as an effective deterrent. Antihistamine creams or tablets will help with any itchy bites. Whilst midges are so small that they can pass through a mosquito net, you can buy 'midge-proof' head nets made with a fine mesh that will keep them away.

Occasionally, participants may need to leave an expedition earlier than planned for various reasons. Although rare, when such occasions do arise, your hosts can generally arrange for you to be collected and returned to Inverness. This is subject to being able to reach an accessible location and the availability of a vehicle and driver, so it might not be immediate. Your host reserves the right to charge $150 to collect an individual (with those traveling with them) and return them to Inverness; this extra charge covers staff time and the use of a vehicle & fuel. Your host will be happy to provide a receipt for this, should you require it for insurance claim purposes and we recommend that you take out suitable travel insurance to cover vacation cancelation costs or instances like those described above. You are more than welcome to make your own arrangements to leave if necessary, however, please be aware that this trip operates in some very remote locations, and taxis/public transport are not always readily available.

Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).

If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.

For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.

We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.

We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.

If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
