Start the day bright and early with your first and highest peak of the week: Mount Korab (9,068ft). The ascent is long and strenuous due to the elevation, but not technically difficult. Following a path from the village, you’ll pass through shady woodland and across open pastures dotted with traditional shepherd huts before pushing on to the summit for sweeping views of North Macedonia's Mavrovo National Park and the high peaks of the Korab - Koritnik Range. Celebrate at the top with a picnic lunch, then begin your descent back into the valley. Later, travel by bus along the scenic River Drin and cross into Europe’s youngest nation, Kosovo, continuing to the historic quarter of Gjakova, your home for the night.

  2. Day 3

Set off early to drive to the bottom of Mt. Gjeravica, then lace-up your boots and get ready to tackle your second summit of the week. With your luggage loaded onto horses and eyes set on the peak, you’ll stride across blueberry-covered meadows to the ridgeline. The path winds through a boulder field up to a tranquil, heart-shaped mountain lake reflecting Gjeravica's dark and imposing roof. The final stretch to the summit becomes steeper, rugged and rough underfoot but once at the top your efforts will be quickly repaid by sweeping views of the Dinaric and Albanian Alps. After the obligatory summit photo, you’ll start your descent via an old Yugoslav border patrol route, before spending the night below the point at which Albania, Kosovo and Montenegro meet.

The surrounding fir woodlands are home to brown bears, chamois, wolves, and Albania's national bird, the golden eagle, a symbol of the country. With glimpses of tomorrow’s summit on the horizon, you’ll finish the day in the peaceful village of Cerem, welcomed into a simple guesthouse by a warm local family.

Bid farewell to your host family, today you face the longest and hardest stage of the trek. You’ll start with a gradual ascent to the Bori Pass then cross into Montenegro through a labyrinth-like karst field with brief scrambling sections. From Persllopit Pass (6,709ft) you’ll see the summit of Zla Kolata and commence a steady 2.5-hour climb, tackling steep craggy karst terrain on your way to the hardest summit of the trip. Once at the top you’ll be rewarded with views across Albania’s Accursed Mountains, and into Prokletije and Valbona National Park. A steep descent over meadows, through forest and rocky mule paths will lead to your home for the night, a comfortable guesthouse in the beautiful Valbona Valley. Enjoy a substantial home-cooked meal and celebrate the bagging of your third and final summit - you made it!

Detailed Logistics

Transfers

On Day 1, you can choose to be picked up either from Tirana Airport, or from Tirana's Rinas Bus Station if you're already in town. If you’re flying in on the first day of the trip, please make sure you book a flight that lands by 1:20 PM at the latest. Your host will confirm transfer details before your trip, but the four-hour group transfer to Radomire is generally scheduled for early- to mid-afternoon, after all morning flights have landed.

Airport transfers between your lodging in the city and the airport are not included on Day 7. Please see below for more details on the excellent links between Tirana Airport and the City.

If you are arriving or departing outside these times or days, getting to Tirana city from the airport can easily be arranged locally. You can take a taxi direct from the airport (between €15-30), or you can take the Rinas Express shuttle bus. Rinas Express tickets cost around 400 Albanian Lek (Euros are also accepted) and you can simply get on the bus and buy your ticket. The journey takes 30 minutes and departs from the airport every hour, on the hour from 6:00 AM until 12:00 AM. The drop-off point is Skanderbeg Square, Tirana's central square, which is around a 10-15 minute walk away from your hotel. Alternatively, your host can arrange private airport transfers for an extra cost.

Travel options

There are regular flights to Tirana from major airports across the UK and Europe. There are no direct flights from North America to Tirana International Airport (TIA), so you'll need to connect through a major European hub. London, Frankfurt, Munich, Vienna, Zurich and Istanbul all have regular onward flights. One-stop routes are available from cities like New York, Newark, Boston, Washington D.C., Chicago and Miami.

Trip level explained

Level 6

Challenging-Tough

This trek is a serious challenge! It includes long, strenuous back-to-back walking days of at least 7–10 hours, with elevation gains of up to 4,921ft on certain days. The climb to the top of Zla Kolata (8,314ft) is the most difficult of the trip. Adverse weather conditions and exposed paths may be part of the tour, although there is no technical climbing involved. Around 90% of the trails on this trip are also used by packhorses, meaning the paths are reasonably wide for hikers. There are a few exposed stretches with steep drops, which are almost exclusively part of the optional final ascents to the summits. These can be skipped if you don’t feel comfortable with them.

At this difficulty level, previous multi-day trekking experience is essential. However, this is a non-technical trip and, while you may use your hands for balance on the ascent to the optional summits, there’s no climbing or need for technical gear. It's mostly about having the ability to negotiate uneven paths or craggy karst terrain, along with good stamina to manage the long days.

Training is essential to ensure physical readiness and to fully enjoy the experience. A focused fitness regime should begin at least 8–12 weeks prior to departure. The best way to prepare for this trip is to get out walking in the hills at home and try to replicate the daily distances and elevation gains. We’d recommend including at least a couple of back-to-back days over weekends in the build-up to the trip.

What will I need to carry?

You'll need to have a duffel bag or backpack (max. 33 lbs) suitable for all your belongings which will be transported for you by vehicle, horses or mules, and then a small daypack (30-40 liters) to carry personal items during the day.

High altitude (over 8,200 ft): factors to consider

This trip visits locations at or above 8,200ft, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness (opens in new tab), also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group well-being, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatize can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

Hot climate: factors to consider

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme levels, with limited shade and, at times, high humidity adding to the challenge. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but staying well hydrated, wearing suitable clothing, and using sun protection is essential.

Before traveling, consider your ability to remain active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have any concerns, especially if you have cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two before the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transportation to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before traveling.

All travelers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

The Balkan 3 Peaks Challenge was a beautiful adventure with a fantastic group of people, incredible landscapes, and great guides. The hikes were challenging, and the views and sense of achievement made it all worthwhile. From lush green valleys to rocky mountain terrain, the scenery was incredibly diverse. The guides were excellent and professional. The accommodation exceeded expectations, with comfortable beds and the bonus of a shower every evening after long days on the trail. A few logistical challenges are to be expected in such a remote region, but things were managed quite smoothly. I loved discovering this part of the Balkans for the first time and would highly recommend this adventure!

If you want a genuinely tough 4 days of hiking (with just enough lounging to keep it real) and another day of celebrating, then this is the trip for you. Touching four countries, but mostly centred on stunning Albania, this itinerary gives you peaks, alpine lakes, comfortable accomm, mountain streams, tasty treats, fascinating history, goats and an unbelievably good time.

  • Joe B.

Very well organised trip from start to finish. Amazing, contrasting scenery every day. Awesome mountains. Like minded group of people. Nice mountain huts. Chilled out guides. Would highly recommended.

Donart and Roy were fantastic. Both very experienced and capable. One even volunteers for mountain rescue. We knew we were in safe hands. The professionalism shown was second to none, but at no point were we short of laughs. The team was great and I’ve shared some core memories with them. This is something that can’t be planned but luck was on our side. I feel very privileged to have experienced this adventure, it was challenging at times but I’ve finished without so much as a blister. I’d highly recommend MBA and hope to plan my next trip soon.

From start to finish this trip was an absolute pleasure. Everything ran smoothly and it didn't take long at all to settle into the routine of the itinerary. Various thoughts for people considering it, in no particular order: * The scenery is absolutely stunning and far surpassed expectations. It is significantly more varied than I would have guessed. * The food was a huge plus, with the dinners in particular being big & delicious * Breakfast generally was excellent, with only one day where the options were slightly limited. Note you'll essentially eat the same thing for lunch. * Didn't have a bad guesthouse experience and that first post-hike beer was a treat. * The single-supplement for 2 nights was great value for money. * Hot showers every evening, but cold water in the morning. * The MBA itinerary does not accurately reflect the actual distances or elevation changes and is probably overly conservative. * Don't skip the waterproof trousers * My first time using hiking poles and they were a godsend. Individually our group was wonderful, and the dynamic was a huge part of my enjoyment of the trip, so if any of you are reading this - thank you. I wish I could write a separate, 6-star review for our guides Roy & Donart, who were consummate professionals. Endlessly patient, encouraging & fun, it would not have been the same without them. This was my first experience with MBA, but surely not my last.

What a phenomenal week! I had so much fun tackling challenging hikes, swimming in mountain lakes and enjoying the spectacular views and wildflowers - pictures do not do justice to the stunning Accursed Mountains. Roy and Donart were wonderful, enthusiastic guides (as well as snack legends), and our group was fantastic, laughing together like we'd known each other for years. Being met every evening with warm guesthouse welcomes and homemade Albanian feasts was perfect after big hiking days. 4 new countries visited, 15 new friends made, 3(+2) peaks summited. . . the Balkans have my heart.

This trip exceeded expectations in every way! These hikes are very tough but absolutely worth it. I cannot express enough gratitude to our guides, Deni and Donart. They ensured we were always taken care of and pivoted to meet individual needs as necessary. They communicated all the details we needed to be prepared for each day's challenges and I felt I was always in good hands if anything where to go awry. The guest houses exceeded expectations with hot showers, wifi, and hearty dinners and breakfasts. I would absolutely do this trip again!

  • Hayley E.

We were incredibly fortunate with the conditions and only experienced a short spell of light rain during one decent. Due to icy conditions, we were unable to climb Zla Kolata but the views from neighbouring Rosni Peak were incredible. Transport was well organised and the beautiful ferry trip and lunch at Mrizi I Zanave on the last day were a welcome treat. Some minor issues at the guesthouses on Day 3 and 4 but the rest of the accommodation was really nice. Thank you to Deni and Donart, our wonderful guides. They took us on a bonus climb to Three Border Peak on Day 5 and were helpful, friendly and great fun.

  • Oliver B.

A absolute must do trip. Fantastic scenery, a fulfilling challenge, and memories made. Huge shoutout to our guides Deni and Donart for being knowledgeable and adaptable, meeting all the needs of the group. Would highly recommend!

The Balkan 3 peaks challenge trip exceeded all my expectations. The guides Deni and Donart were the best guides I’ve had on a trip. The accommodation was the best I’ve had on a trip. • Rewarding adventure!

    Bethan C. July 2026
Had a fantastic week trekking the peaks of the Balkans, truly unforgettable thanks to our guides Preveza and Renis. Hiking was tough, really good level of fitness was needed. Weather pretty good, extreme heat at the base of the mountains and in the towns but slid down snow at the peaks, also had some really intense rain at times, pack for all eventualities! Accommodation was surprisingly good, even in the mountains. Vegetarian food was rather limited and monotonous but plentiful, loads of fruit and veg.
  • Amazing way to spend a week!

    George N. July 2026
Although we were only able to climb 1 of the 3 peaks due to bad weather, the plan B (and sometimes C!) routes were great alternatives. The quality of the accommodation surprised me, with hot showers, power and even WiFi at all guesthouses. The guides were also super knowledgeable and I felt safe under their leadership. Would thoroughly recommend!
  • Breathtaking!

    Jasmin G. June 2026
A wonderful trip in an incredible part of the country I probably would not have been able to explore on my own. This trip exceeded expectations with every hike offering a new challenge and a new incredible view and experience of the Albanian Alps. The food was plentiful and delicious, the guides were well informed, encouraging and made us feel very safe in some of the steeper areas or areas with snow hiking, and the guest house accommodation exceeded expectations. Due to being early in the season we did some of the "Plan B" hikes that were not on the original itinerary but the alternatives were still brilliant and very worth the adventure, it is clear whatever you get up to in this region it will not disappoint. The pace on some days was definitely challenging (especially the days with a car transfer) but otherwise the difficulty was as expected. Would night recommend!

Accommodation was better than expected, never required the sleeping bag as mentioned, all well equipped. Food was plentiful and pretty decent. The hiking was well structured and will push you to your limits and stunning scenery our guides Kreshnik and Roy were top class great fun and very knowledgeable and I can’t praise them enough. Total value for money. Albania totally surprised me. Tirana is beautiful and if you get a chance well worth a visit. Due to more snow than usual at this time of the year. Two of the hills were ruled our but our guides had a plan B and they were a definite challenge.
  • Tough but oh so beautiful!

    Ivona G. November 2025
Beautiful scenery! I enjoyed the whole trip. Tough terrain and steep uphills/ downhills, so good level of fitness and hiking experience is required. The accommodation standards vary as on a few nights there were 5 of us sharing a room and 1 bathroom and on some nights we had really nice hotels. Renis, the tour guide did an amazing job! Very supportive group of people to spend the trip with! Will visit Balkans again.

Beautiful hikes, great company, food was surprisingly good and our guides Blendi and Xhoni were always there for us, making alternative arrangements when weather wasn't so great. Excellent value for money, managed to discover a bit about the culture of the region too alongside enjoying the landscape. Some guesthouses better than others but overall pretty good for in the mountains and seems that infrastructure getting better.
  • Great trip

Everything was fantastic - very long strenuous hikes, guide (Nedih) was superb, accommodation was great (only tiny negative was 2nd night of hike where they turned the generator off - and therefore all power - at 8:50pm!!!). Incredible meals on last day. Brilliant!!
  • Beautiful countries

Highly recommend this trip - the hiking and scenery is incredible with the three peaks as the cherry on top. Our guides Blendi and Renis were amazing, they really made the trip! Hiking in August was pretty hot but we even got to cool off with a few swims in the mountain lakes. You need decent fitness but it's so worth it!

This was one of the toughest challenges I’ve ever done but I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Be prepared for long days and tough inclines, but also spectacular views and wonderful new friends. Deni and Elena were the most professional and personable guides.
  • Fabulous trip - start to finish!

    Jose C. September 2025
A highly organized trip, from Eda's swift responses to the various modes of transport, everything worked perfectly. We had two great guides in Deni and Elena - with their mountain and weather wisdom, Albanian dance lessons, and Balkan history, and encouragement, they enriched the hiking experience tremendously. Our accommodations were nicer than anticipated and the food was very good, sometimes terrific. I especially appreciated the abundance of veg options. The hike itself was very difficult largely due to the pace and a few of us did not reach all summits. In retrospect, I should have commenced the hike upon arriving in Europe, rather than after three "tourist" weeks. Nonetheless, it was gorgeous, the trails were uncrowded and it was so worth it. This was our second hike with MBA. And like on the first trek, the hikers were fabulous. We quickly became a tight group, full of laughter, happy to share, super supportive. Ready to book it?
  • July 13th-19th Review

    Samuel J. September 2025
This is super late, but I've finally got around to writing it up. Had the most epic week back in July doing the Balkins 3 Peaks. Firstly, the two guides Anton and Prevesa made our trip - two incredible and delightful human beings and every minute spent with them was a genuine pleasure - they really looked after us and made our trip. Secondly, the trip was so well organised, each day of hiking offered something a little different and the guides (especially Anton) were extremely knowledgeable about so many aspects of the trip (all things Albania and Kosovo). The scenery was stunning and all the peaks had their own different vibe, so there were no two days the same. Lastly, we travelled as a group of 5, so there were 10 other travelers outside of us and we were completely blessed with how great everyone was. We all jelled instantly and grew a very tight bond over the course of the trip - everyone offered to the trip and it was so awesome getting to know them all (I realise MBA can't control this, but I wanted to share anyway). Overall, we all had the most magic week back in July and I genuinely couldn't recommend this trip enough. I very nearly missed out 'umming' and 'ahhing' over whether to book, but I bit the bullet and booked one of the last slots. I count my lucky stars I did, as I had no idea how incredible it would be. If you're doubting whether to book this up or not as well - don't! It's genuinely worth every penny!

Before You Travel

What to Pack

Backpack with hiking gear laid out

Know before you go! Some stuff we'll provide, other things you'll need to bring.

Kit List

What do I need to bring?

BAGS

  • Duffel bag or rucksack (maximum of 33 lbs). Please bring a soft, reasonably sized duffel bag rather than a hard-shell suitcase, as luggage is transported on rough mountain tracks in open-bed vehicles, carried up narrow guesthouse stairs, and space is limited - hard cases and oversized bags are prone to damage and create logistical issues.
  • Hiking pack (30-40 liters)
  • Waterproof liner or drybags for duffel bag/daypack

CLOTHES

  • Lightweight down or synthetic jacket
  • Lightweight waterproof and windproof jacket
  • Breathable wicking layers
  • Fleece jacket or similar
  • Buff or neck scarf
  • Lightweight pants/shorts/skirts for hiking
  • T-shirts
  • Underwear and socks
  • Sunglasses
  • Sunhat
  • Warm hat and gloves
  • Something to sleep in
  • Swimwear (optional - if you would like to swim in mountain lakes)
  • Hiking boots (worn-in)
  • Lightweight shoes for overnight stays

OTHER

  • Universal travel plug adapter
  • Power bank or solar charger
  • Passports (and visas)
  • Travel insurance documents
  • Sunscreen
  • Personal first-aid kit (including blister treatment)
  • Personal items (biodegradable toiletries, sanitary wear etc)
  • Toilet kit (toilet paper, biodegradable bags to carry paper out to dispose of)
  • Quick-dry towel
  • Alcohol hand-gel
  • Face mask
  • Headlamp or flashlight
  • Two reusable water bottles (1 liter)
  • Trekking poles (these are usually required to be packed in checked-in luggage, please check with your airline)
  • Insect repellent

OPTIONAL

  • Earplugs
  • Energy bars and snacks (there are limited opportunities to buy snacks in remote mountain locations, however, Tirana has supermarkets and the guide brings a small supply of dried fruits on the trek)
  • Lunch box (to avoid using packaging and plastic bags for your meals during the trek)
  • Eye mask for sleeping (some rooms may not have curtains)
  • Sleeping bag liner (for if you feel the cold)
  • Sleeping bag (2/3-season) - for early June and Sep departures only (you may wish to check the forecast before deciding whether to pack this)

The list is written in the mindset of hope for the best, plan for the worst. In a best-case scenario, you won't need all the items on the list, but better safe than sorry! The alpine zone can see cold temperatures at any time of the year and often can experience temperature differences of 77°F within a day. Sunshine and 86°F can quickly plummet to 41°F with wind chill in a heavy thunderstorm. Please bring more warm clothing when traveling in early or late season than in the summer months, but it’s better to overpack rather than underpack!

Marta Marinelli, raised in Italy’s serene Prosecco Hills, dreamed of global adventures, inspired by her father's travel stories. Her passion evolved into a career, backed by a decade of studies including degrees in international tourism and destination management. She’s worked in the adventure travel sector since 2012, living in Italy, the UK, and now sunny Portugal.

Over twenty years, Marta has explored over 55 countries, visiting remote areas like Ghana, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Haiti and Nepal’s Upper Mustang region. As a Senior Adventure Expansion Manager at Much Better Adventures, she focuses on creating life-changing experiences, ranging from multi-activity adventures, challenging treks to ultimate adventures in iconic places. She loves the challenge of finding the best local adventure hosts around the world, collaborating on adventures that offer genuine immersion, pushing beyond the beaten path and working on exclusive itineraries that challenge your comfort zone.

What makes her tick? Enabling people to live adventure-rich lives while positively impacting and empowering local communities around the world, generating sustainable opportunities for both the host, guides, community, and the environment.

The tap water in the mountains is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottle to fill up at the hotels and guesthouses to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.

During the trek you'll be trekking across the borders of Albania, North Macedonia, Montenegro, and Kosovo. Your host will collect a copy of your passport ahead of the trip and will apply for permits on your behalf, so there is no paperwork or applications for you to worry about.

There is generally no convenient way to store excess luggage on this trip. It may depend on which hotel is booked in Tirana as some have limited space for luggage storage, which cannot be booked, and some don't at all. Please inquire with your host for more information.

For groups of up to eight people, there will be one lead guide. For groups of nine or more, there will also be an assistant guide.

In adverse weather conditions, it may not be safe to ascend the exposed peaks, especially Mt. Kollata. Your guide will monitor weather conditions and act accordingly.

In the event of unusually high amounts of snow in spring, you will not use crampons or ice picks on this non-technical trip and may divert routes instead. Your host will be in touch prior to departure and will let you know if any extreme weather is forecast. In the event of heavy snow, you may be advised to bring waterproof shoes, gaiters, and walking microspikes.

The following are contingency plans for parts of the itinerary that are most likely to be impacted if there is unseasonable adverse weather: Day 3: When the traverse behind Mt. Gjeravica is under heavy snowpack, you may transfer to another starting point and climb Mt. Trekufiri (7,760 ft), the point where Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro meet. Day 5: If the Persllopit Pass is closed, you may take a transfer from Cerem to Valbona and aim to ascend Mt. Roshit (8,280 ft). This is a return hike and can be shortened if needed but would adjust the hiking on this day to: 9.5 hrs · 9 mi · 4,757 ft up · 4,757 ft down. Day 5: If the Persllopit Pass is open but the ascent of Mt. Kollata is snow-covered and deemed too dangerous, the summit is skipped. This would mean the hiking on this day is adjusted to: 7 hrs · 8 mi · 3,527 ft up · 3,681 ft down.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully before your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form as soon as possible with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND

Albanian mountain cuisine has improved a lot in recent years, but it’s still shaped by a long tradition of simple, resourceful cooking in a rugged landscape where communities historically grew only what the mountains allowed. As a result, meals remain hearty, rustic, and limited in variety, relying on local, seasonal ingredients and the roots of ‘cucina povera’. Rural guesthouses, restaurants, and hospitality providers that mainly serve a domestic audience are often unfamiliar with dietary restrictions and preferences, and special diets are not always well understood. While the food is wholesome and filling, travelers with specific dietary requirements should not expect a wide culinary range. It is also worth noting that fresh fruit can be hard to come by in the high alpine areas - this is because as soon as it ripens, it’s often snapped up to make raki, Albania’s homemade firewater.

SPECIAL DIETS

Vegetarian Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, you should be aware that traditional Albanian dishes can be meat-centered, and vegetarian diets are not common in certain areas that this trip visits. Having said this, there are several traditional dishes that are vegetarian by default with meat usually served as a separate side dish. Vegetarian dishes are considered shared dishes and are generally served to the entire group. Vegetarians are often served the same meals as everyone else, minus the meat or fish.

Vegan Vegan diets are very difficult to cater for on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination, and you may find the food provided repetitive. Traditional Albanian dishes are meat-centered, and vegan diets are not common in certain areas that this trip visits. While it is possible to follow a Vegan diet on this trip, you need to be aware that options are very limited, lack protein, and can be quite repetitive. Without dairy and eggs, breakfast and picnic lunches are limited to bread and raw vegetables. Dinners are satisfactory in the majority of places, but the lodging hosts may require your input/guidance. Please bring calorie-dense and protein-rich supplements from home - snacks and items such as peanut butter etc - to supplement the meals and ensure you have enough fuel for the adventure.

Kosher Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and usually cannot be guaranteed. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

Halal Certified Halal supply varies by destination and cannot be guaranteed on this trip. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten Free (for Celiac, please see Allergies section below) Gluten-free diets are difficult to cater for on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination, and you may find the food provided repetitive. At breakfast and for picnic lunches, fried doughs (such as petulla, pancakes) and bread are the staple foods. Gluten-free alternatives beyond the occasional dense and dry corn/maize bread are virtually unknown/unavailable so please do bring plenty of your favorite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

Lactose Free Lactose-free diets are difficult to cater for on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that alternative products are not available in this destination, and you may find the picnics provided somewhat limited. As cheese is a staple at breakfast and lunch, we recommend bringing your favorite snacks or supplements from home. Please also see the notes text on the vegan diet above.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life-threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our CX team before booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

Departures are scheduled throughout the summer season only (Jun-Sep). Typical summer weather conditions in this part of the Balkans are dry, clear, and warm during the daytime, with the temperature dropping at night or as you climb higher to the summits. However, rainfall and thunderstorms are common throughout the summer season, so do bring your wet weather gear!

You may encounter some snow on altitudes above 5,906ft until the end of June, especially on northern-facing slopes. Your guides monitor the conditions in order to stay prepared and share information with your group before you set out on your trek, in case any changes to the route are required – please see the FAQ below on 'Plan B'.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 244kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
