Arrive in Las Vegas, the indulgent oasis in the middle of the Mojave Desert. Meet your fellow adventurers and host at the hotel downtown in the early evening to discuss the adventure ahead. Leave the city lights behind and hit the road for your first taste of a classic American adventure. Cross the border from Nevada into Utah on your way to your first hike among the huge sandstone cliffs of Zion National Park. Weave through lush riparian woodland, catching glimpses of cascading falls, before tackling a climb up to an epic viewpoint across the canyon. Back in the van, you'll drive the final stretch to your first campground of the trip – just outside of Bryce Canyon National Park. Get to grips with setting up camp, then settle in for dinner and stories around the campfire in the great American outdoors – the first of many such nights to come.

    Day 3

Wake up early to catch the sunrise and its dazzling display over Bryce Canyon's multi-colored landscape. Today, you'll venture deeper into Bryce Canyon National Park along a series of trails, through a myriad of colors and rock formations. The park is a showcase of some of the youngest sedimentary layers along the Grand Staircase, a unique region of canyons, arches, plateaus, and cliffs. Your hike will see you descend below the rim into this otherworldly realm, connecting the Peekaboo, Navajo Loop, and Queen's Garden trails.

Pack down camp and bid farewell to Utah, hopping in the van for the drive to Page, Arizona. Head out for a short hike at Horseshoe Bend, the iconic lookout spot above the winding Colorado River. Next up is Antelope Canyon, a narrow slot canyon formed by millions of years of water and wind erosion. Accessible only with a specialist local guide, the tour begins with a jeep ride to the entrance of Antelope Canyon, then you'll navigate this surreal formation on foot. Rain and flooding still carve out the canyon, leaving behind ever-changing edifices which resemble brush strokes along a rock canvas, leading up narrow walls to glimpses of the light above. Back on the road again, you'll head towards the big one: eyes peeled for your first views of the Grand Canyon, before an evening arrival at camp.

Explore one of the USA's most famous sights today. The Grand Canyon, sculpted over millennia by the Colorado River, exposes some two billion years of the Earth's history. Spend the day appreciating the mesmerizing verandas along various trails. Tour leaders are not permitted to guide inside Grand Canyon National Park, so the hikes today are self-guided – but your guide will tell you the best paths to follow, and provide full details before you hit the trails. You'll find them easy to navigate together as a group. Back at camp, tuck into dinner under the stars after an epic day. The road trip continues tomorrow...

A journey through America's western states is packed with famous sights and iconic places, and Route 66 is the ultimate road trip. Known as 'The Mother Road', it is recognized as a National Monument in its entirety from Chicago to LA, representing generations of stories stemming from the complex history of the United States' western expansion. The small town of Seligman, Arizona has been instrumental in preserving its legacy, so you'll stop here for a dose of Americana and Route 66 flavor. Later, you'll stop at the nearly ghost town of Oatman, Arizona, which offers more insight into the history of human pursuits westward. True to the American-style road trip, you'll rest your head at a roadside hotel this evening.

Finish up this portion of the road trip with a resupply stop and the final stretch of road to cover, crossing into California and continuing on as the mountains of the Sierra Nevada come into view. Eventually, you'll begin to roll past the great forests of Sequoia National Park – one of the oldest protected natural areas in the world, and host to the largest living organism by volume on the planet, the General Sherman Tree. Many of the ancient sequoia trees that reside here have watched over the forest for thousands of years. Stretch your legs after all the driving with a hike up to Moro Rock, offering a brilliant view over the San Joaquin Valley via an ascent up 350 stairs to the top of the granite dome. You'll set up camp tonight in the foothills outside the park.

You have the option to hit a longer route in Sequoia National Park, or to join your guide on a drive between both parks to have a chance to navigate multiple shorter trails. A UNESCO International Biosphere Reserve, this diverse ecosystem is teeming with wildlife including black bears, wolves, coyotes and beavers.

Arguably, the best is saved for last on this trip. Yosemite National Park is the jewel in the crown of America's great wilderness landscapes, with sheer granite walls that rise more than 3,000 ft above the glacially sculpted valley floor. Regal waterfalls, hundreds of feet tall, attempt to steal the scene while rocky domes and peaks impose their will across the skyline. Take in your first impressions of Yosemite and get your bearings of the valley on a hike to see the impressive Yosemite Falls, before setting up your final camp spot of the trip near the western entrance to the park.

Head back into Yosemite National Park early, for a full day to explore the best trails. The Yosemite Valley shuttle system facilitates trail access around the Valley Loop, so you'll hop on the shuttles to reach trailheads which lead to some of the most epic parts of the park, including Vernal Falls and Mirror Lake. The sense of adventure is ever-present in Yosemite – from John Muir's exploits in the 1870s (which led to the creation of the National Park), through to modern-day feats by the likes of Alex Honnold (who in 2017 climbed El Capitan solo, without a rope). Yosemite oozes adventure and the great American outdoors from its every pore.

The trip officially ends in central San Francisco at 3:00 PM, giving you plenty of time to catch an evening flight. Food and Dietary info

While camping, your guide will prepare nutritious and varied meals. As it is participatory camping, your help with washing up afterward will be appreciated by the guide! Breakfasts are served buffet-style each day with varying items, allowing for a quick start before getting out on the trails, and typically include hot drinks, fruit juice, bread, croissants, cereal, granola, yogurt, and fruit. Lunches will be cold picnics, prepared earlier so that you can carry them with you and stop somewhere during the hikes. These usually involve wraps, sandwiches, salads, cereal bars, and fruit. For dinners, the guide will plan an appetizer, main, and dessert. The main dish is typically meat or fish with sides of rice or potatoes and vegetables. Some nights they may make a pasta or curry dish.

Vegetarian diets can be catered for, please request this in advance on your passenger info form once you've made your reservation. Lactose-free, nut-free, and mild gluten-intolerant diets can also be accommodated by advance request. However, due to the limited cooking facilities in the camp kitchen, very strict vegan or celiac diets cannot be accommodated on this trip, as it's not possible to ensure separate cooking equipment to prevent cross-contamination.

Trip level explained

Level 2

Easy-Moderate

A good general level of fitness is recommended, as you'll be spending up to five hours per day walking on mountain trails – some of which involve moderate elevation gains. You'll be hiking for consecutive days, though there are sizable road trips to tackle as well, which break things up. The hikes are all non-technical, with no previous trekking experience required. The selected trails are 'there and back' day hikes, meaning that there is often the flexibility to shorten your hike, sit out a section, or even stay back at the campsite, should you want a rest.

What will I need to carry?

You'll need to have a larger bag suitable for all your belongings which will be transported for you, and then a small daypack in which to carry personal items during each day of hiking.

Hot climate: factors to consider

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme levels, with limited shade and, at times, high humidity adding to the challenge. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but staying well hydrated, wearing suitable clothing, and using sun protection is essential.

Before traveling, consider your ability to remain active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have any concerns, especially if you have cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two before the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transportation to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before traveling.

All travelers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

Loved my trip. A great small group we really bonded quick and helped each other with the camping -putting tents up down etc. The camp ground at Grand Canyon was very basic. . . but the other facilities compensated for that. The tour guide was knowledgeable but I often felt as I was an imposition. There was very little down time, a lot was time tabled with little flexibility. Needs to be a bit more chilled. Food was really good top notch. We needed perhaps more info on what kit to bring for that day ahead.

I've just returned from a wonderful trip with Much Better Adventures. The scenery was incredible across all the National Parks. If you are considering this trip, then book it. 10 individuals pitched up in Las Vegas, all were solo travellers. Very quickly we were a great team. We helped one another, democratically made decisions. Nobody was left out. The group ranged from mid 20's to 64 (myself). I chose the camping option as I thought it would bring people together more quickly. I was right. Everyone helped out whether it was setting up camp, packing up, food preparation or washing up. Our guide, Katie, was amazing. She worked like a trojan, yet she was part of the team. My personal highlight was the hike in Bryce Canyon, but it was tge people that made it. Two examples. . . as we drove thru a tunnel in Yosemite, Katie played the theme from 2001 A Space Oddessy, then we emerged to a view of El Capitan and Half Dome. . . . . a stroke of genius. As the weather changed for our stay in Yosemite, Much Better Adventures gave us an upgrade from camping to prepared wooden huts, to keep us dry and warm. A fantastic trip, great group, and a wonderful guide provided by a caring company. Just book it 😀

This trip was all I hoped for and more. I could never have fit in all the amazing hikes in so many parks on my own and the group and guide added so much to the experience.

This was truly an epic adventure and a great way to explore so much of western USA. Everything was so well organized and we learnt so much from our excellent guide David. The camping element really helped me personally switch off and immerse into nature. I would highly recommend to anyone considering this, especially as a solo traveler. I personally like a challenging hike so it was good to have option on some of the days to disperse according to personal preference. I wish I could do it all over again!

This was a full on 10 night trip that seemed to just get better and better. It was hard to believe we could fit so much into such a short amount of time. There was a good range of activities available, some of which we chose ourselves and self guided and others that we undertook as a group. There was always a lot to do, with the participatory camping, and the group worked well as a team. Our guide, David, was very experienced and knowledgeable of all the areas we travelled to. This is a great way to see five of the most beautiful national parks, as well as experiencing the iconic Route 66.

David was an excellent tour guide who's knowledge of the parks history and wildlife added an extra layer of magic to the trip It was my first solo trip and adventure to the states - the group dynamics were spot on and I cant recommend this tour enough. David provided ample options/suggestions for hikes depending on each persons needs or requests. For those wanting to challenge themselves he would have the perfect test waiting, similarly for the days where you wanted something more relaxing there were options that would provide excellent views and chances to still see wildlife along the way Would highly recommend this trip :)

If you want to test the limits of your legs, your ability to function without a mattress, and your tolerance for seeing yet another gorgeous view, this is the trip for you. As an introvert who is very particular about toilet facilities, I was nervous about this trip, but I needn’t have worried. The group dynamic was brilliant: 12 of us plus David, our guide, who was equal parts mountain goat, chef, therapist, and human GPS. Our group was always up for a laugh, whether we were pitching tents in semi-darkness or debating whether the Vengaboys belonged on our Route 66 playlist (they did. ) The hikes were challenging but completely doable, though I did consider rolling down a switchback or two to save time. Each stop felt unique. My top moment was the surreal Antelope Canyon, where sunbeams filtered through the rock and turned the canyon into a living art installation. Oh, and the wildlife - I loved it all. The campsites had clean showers, toilets, and usually a shop. Nights and mornings could be chilly, but by mid-morning, we were peeling off layers faster than a Vegas showgirl. Bring bug spray, anti-bac wipes for the more ‘rustic’ park toilets, and a sense of humour. You’ll need all three.

If you’re thinking about booking this trip, just do it, it was INCREDIBLE. The scenery was out of this world. Our guide (Manny - who is the coolest person on earth by the way) was awesome, he took us on some great hikes, drove us to some epic viewpoints, was always involved with us as part of our group, was well organised providing ample food and water etc. it was the trip of a lifetime, thoroughly enjoyed it. Lots of wild swimming spots for a dip in the river post-hike. A couple of the campsites also had swimming pools so take your swimwear! A couple of extra things to think about, we were offered a helicopter ride over the Grand Canyon at an additional cost when we got there, if that’s available, don’t think about the price, just do it, number 1 thing I’ve ever done in my entire life! We also subbed in rafting through Yosemite on the last afternoon, this was also WELL worth doing đŸ™ŒđŸŒ the camping is pretty basic, but the facilities are all working. (Tip: to save on luggage space, I bought a sleeping bag from Walmart on the first day (we stop there to buy food) for $15 and donated it in San Fran on the last day before coming home!) Overall I’d do it all over again, the whole group got on so well together which was a massive bonus. If you’re in any doubt, take this review as a sign you should just book this trip. Amazing.

If you have any desire to visit places that inevitably leave you dumbfounded, then go. Our guide Manny was such a fun person to be around and allowed us all to have the adventure we wanted. A fantastic life defining experience made better by the people.

Amazing.
  • Go!

If you have any desire to visit places that inevitably leave you dumbfounded, then go. Our guide Manny was such a fun person to be around and allowed us all to have the adventure we wanted. A fantastic life defining experience made better by the people.
  • Bucket list holiday complete!

    Lizzie B. May 2025
This was an absolutely incredible trip made so much easier by booking a tour rather than trying to navigate the driving, campaign bookings and everything myself. Our guide, Charlie, was an absolute legend who made the whole experience more fun. At the beginning of the trip I mentioned how much I love wild swimming and he went out of his way to find opportunities for me to get in the water. The itinerary was well thought out, all of the long drive days were straight after our biggest hiking days so it was a great way to rest up after being active.
  • Great Variety

    Nathan November 2024
What a great way to get so many places ticked off of the bucket list! It's hard to pick out my top moment from the trip but I'd have to say that first view of the grand canyon probably takes it. On a practical note I went on the trip in October when the days were hot and the nights were cold particularly in Bryce (around 2°c). I can imagine in the peak of summer though some of the hikes can be particularly challenging due to heat
  • A perfect tour of the national parks of west USA!

    Nicholas B. October 2024
This trip delivered everything we were looking for when it comes to a tour of the western USA national parks. The trip delivered beautiful views and challenging (but achievable) hikes. The stops at national parks were mixed with travel days between each location, but the travel days were often straight after a full day of hiking, so the rest was usually appreciated. This was a camping trip and each campsite delivered a great balance of outdoor location near to the parks and good amenities (showers, toilets etc.). David was our guide and he was fantastic, fun, approachable, knowledgeable and accommodating for everyone's needs, trying his hardest to give us the best trip possible. He is also a great cook and put together a great menu in camp, with interesting an filling meals. He played a big part in making the trip so great! There was a total of 5 of us on this trip (6 including David!) and the group dynamic was really good, everyone got along we were all good friends by the end of the trip. Highlights for me were the hiking days in Bryce Canyon, Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Parks. The views were all spectacular, and so different from each other. We went on this trip in October and had amazing weather, pretty much clear skies every day. At this time of year, expect pretty cold mornings and hot afternoons, so pack clothes for both conditions, with layers you can remove as the temperature increases! Overall I couldn't fault this trip, it delivered everything I wanted. Thank you!
  • An amazing trip!

    Rebecca L. October 2024
This trip was great from start to finish. We covered so much ground but it didn’t feel rushed, we had a great amount of time to explore and hike. I was part of a lovely group led by David, who was such a great and experienced tour guide. His knowledge of the areas and wildlife really made the trip and I feel like I learnt so much about every place we went. The trip involved participatory camping, which I was nervous about as an inexperienced camper, but honestly it was a lot of fun. I didn’t quite pack enough layers for Bryce (high altitude so gets cold at night) but the tents were easy to put up, the food was great in camp and all pitching in together really helped you to get to know the group and was part of the experience. Would highly recommend this trip :)
  • Beautiful Places, Rough Camping

    Christie E. September 2024
Our lovely group hiked through fantastic and diverse landscapes. Guide Zach kept us safe and showed us hidden gems. The campsites and equipment varied from great to unmentionable - bring your own sleeping pad or buy one at the first stop, for sure. Some hikes were challenging, especially due to the midday heat. The road trip and walks gave ample time to rest tired legs. I'll fondly remember this trip and these people forever.
  • Amazing Experience with great Host

    Kollita M. June 2024
The views were absolutely stunning, with every location offering breathtaking scenery that felt like it was straight out of a postcard. Our host was fantastic—friendly, welcoming, helpful and a great cook! The trip was well organised, the atmosphere was perfect, balancing relaxation and adventure seamlessly. Overall, it was an amazing experience with incredible views, I highly recommend this trip to anyone looking for a memorable and enjoyable adventure, packed with must-see locations! The only aspect that was not quite right was an issue with dietary accommodations. Before booking, I asked about specific dietary requirements and was informed that there would be no additional charges. However, after booking, I was asked to pay extra. While the extra cost itself wasn't a major concern, it felt very non-transparent to change the information only after the booking was made.

FAQs

Tap water in the United States is safe to drink. There will be refill points at each of the campgrounds that you'll stay at, so make sure to bring a water bottle or two to carry enough water on each of the hikes.

No. Since this adventure starts in Las Vegas and ends nearly 620 miles away in San Francisco, there is no option to store your luggage at the start of the trip. Your luggage will be transferred for you throughout the trip and safely stored in the group vehicle.

The weather in the mountains can be quite unpredictable, with rain, wind, and extreme temperatures possible at any time of the year. The best you can do is to be prepared for anything and come equipped with layers of clothing, sunscreen, and waterproof gear. Your host will be monitoring the weather conditions during the course of the trip and will suggest alternative, safer hiking routes or activities should the weather get particularly bad. In poor weather conditions the cycling activity may not be possible for safety reasons, in this scenario your local host will advise your group of the alternate options available that day.

You'll have one tour leader and hiking guide throughout the trip. An additional specialist local guide joins the group for the trip to Antelope Canyon in Zion National Park.

During this trip, you'll be camping in locations where wildlife may be present in their natural habitat. Both smaller animals (i.e. birds and rodents) and larger ones (such as bears, deer, moose, and elk) are primarily attracted to food, not humans. To protect the local wildlife, you need to ensure your food is kept out of their reach. When camping, the key is to be vigilant about not leaving any food or scented items (like toothpaste and other toiletries) in tents or exposed at the campsite. Your guides will typically designate a safe place to store these items overnight away from the tents, which campers can access if needed. Occasionally a larger animal may pass through or near your campsite, especially in areas that overlap with their natural travel routes. In these cases, just like when encountering wildlife on the trail, it's important to maintain a safe distance, respect the animal's space, and calmly make your presence known if necessary. Your guides will provide more details and directives once at camp so everyone can follow best practices camping and do their bit to help keep wild animals wild.

From May to October, conditions vary widely across the desert and mountain parks on this itinerary. In Zion and the Grand Canyon, May already brings warm days with highs of 70–90°F and cooler nights of 40–50°F. By June, temperatures rise to 80–100°F during the day and 45–65°F at night. July can peak at around 104°F, with hot, dry weather often broken by sudden thunderstorms. In September and October, the desert heat eases, with warm days and cooler nights making for more comfortable hiking conditions.

In other parks, such as Bryce, Sequoia and Yosemite, May still feels like spring at times, with daytime highs of 60–75°F, nighttime lows of 32–45°F, and the chance of lingering snow at higher elevations. June usually sees 70–90°F days and 40–50°F nights. In July, highs reach 80–90°F, with cooler nights of 50–60°F. By September and October, daytime temperatures are warm but moderate, while evenings turn crisp, with autumn colors appearing later in the season. Weather across all parks can be unpredictable, so packing layers, waterproofs and sun protection is essential.

Evenings can be particularly cold at higher elevation campgrounds, including Bryce and the Grand Canyon. Bring warm clothing such as a hat, gloves and insulated jacket, along with a season 3 sleeping bag for a comfortable night at camp. See the kit list for further guidance.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 159kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
