After breakfast in Pristina you'll be driven to the village of Shterpce, close to the border with North Macedonia, where your hike into the wild Sharr Mountains begins. Starting at 3,280 ft, you'll hike up through an enchanting forest (eyes peeled for lynx and bears) before the trail opens to a panoramic view of the entire Sharr range. You'll hike up to the summit of Ljuboten, a local favorite, which at 8,196 ft stands alone from the peaks around it and can be seen from both Pristina and Skopje. Having climbed up in Kosovo, you descend into North Macedonia, as you make your way to the country's oldest mountain hut. The historic Ljuboten Mountain Hut – built in 1931 – promises a warm and cozy evening of traditional food, good company and intriguing tales of the surrounding mountains and their adventurous history.

    Day 3

Hike the border ridge and cool off at Livadica Lake

After a hearty mountain breakfast, you'll set off on a single-track trail to warm up your legs before tackling a rocky scramble. As you climb, keep an eye out for Ljuboten’s oddly named rock formations – Ljuboten’s Neck, Goat Rock, and Pointed Rock among them. Midday brings a well-earned break at Livadica Lake, where you can refuel and, if you're feeling brave, take a dip in the chilly water. The views from this vantage point are nothing short of spectacular. After lunch, it’s all downhill as you cross back into Kosovo and descend to the mountain village of Brezovica, where your hotel and a well-earned rest await.

    Day 4

Leaving Prevalla behind, you’ll follow a gentler trail along the northern slopes of the Sharr Mountains. The landscape opens up into heath and meadows, with quiet stretches along narrow paths – and at times no path at all – below the ridgeline. Today’s goal is Gornje Ljubinje, a traditional Kosovar mountain village that offers a glimpse of everyday life in the hills. You’ll camp on a peaceful mountainside, tucked above the village, with wide-open views and a real sense of calm.

You'll set off from camp in one of the greenest and most striking corners of the Sharr Mountains. The trail leads through dense forest, winding beneath tall trees in peaceful, shaded surroundings. As you climb, the canopy opens to reveal sweeping views of rugged peaks. A natural spring and small lake provide a welcome spot for a quick rest before the final push to the pass marking the border with North Macedonia. From the pass, it's a steady descent to the charming Macedonian village of Vetjse.

    Day 6

    Waterfalls and glacial lakes

A short transfer brings you to the start of today’s trail, which winds beneath some of the Sharr Mountains’ most dramatic peaks. You’ll hike through open pasture, over rocky ground and past cascading waterfalls before arriving at the glacial waters of Karanikola Lake. After a solid day’s exploring in the northern Sharr Mountains, you’ll descend to the remote village of Bozovce, where your lodging awaits.

    Day 7

Soak up your last day on the trail

Fuel up with an early breakfast in Bozovce before heading out on your final day of hiking. First up is Krivashia Waterfall, where water plunges into a cave below—a striking sight to kick things off. From there, you’ll continue toward the spring of the Pena River, one of the key waterways in the Sharr Mountains. The trail then leads into the Leshnica Valley, a long, scenic stretch flanked by towering rock formations that line your path like silent sentinels. Midway through the valley, you’ll pass the Dinjbeg alpine hut—built in 2020 using traditional techniques, designed to serve as a resting point for hikers. After crossing back into Kosovo, descend through open meadows to the mountain village of Brod. Celebrate the finish with a well-earned beer, plus baklava and boza—two classic local treats—before your host transfers you to Prizren for an evening soaking up the city’s atmosphere over a traditional Kosovan dinner.

Trip level explained

Level 4

Moderate-Challenging

This trek has multiple long days with plenty of climbing up and down, so you should be in good shape and used to walking in the hills for consecutive days. Although not technically difficult, the hiking and topping a number of peaks is bound to make you puff so some strong walking legs will go a long way.

What will I need to carry?

You'll need to have a larger bag suitable for all your belongings which will be transported for you, and then a good-sized and comfortable backpack to carry personal items as well as some overnight gear during each day of hiking. Your larger, main luggage will be collected before you set out on the hike on Day 2, you'll have access to it on the evening of Day 4, and then it will be returned to you at the end of the hike on the evening of Day 7.

This means that between these evenings (i.e. Days 2 to 4 and Days 5 to 7), you'll need to carry some personal overnight belongings as well as your daily items, lunch, and water.

You won't need to carry any camping or sleeping gear at all during your hikes. Your tent, sleeping bag, and sleeping mat will be carried for you.

High altitude (over 8,200 ft): factors to consider

This trip visits locations at or above 8,200ft, where some people may experience symptoms of Altitude Sickness (opens in new tab), also known as Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS).

Previous experience at altitude doesn’t guarantee the same response again – your body can react differently on each trip. However, having been at altitude before is still valuable: it gives you a better understanding of how your body might respond, what symptoms to look out for, and how to manage your pace and energy levels.

Your guide is trained to manage the risk of altitude sickness by controlling the rate of ascent, monitoring group well-being, and responding appropriately if anyone feels unwell.

Before booking, we recommend considering your personal health, particularly if you have any pre-existing conditions, and consulting a medical professional if you’re unsure. Arriving early to allow your body to acclimatize can also make a big difference.

Your travel insurance must cover the maximum altitude reached on this trip and include emergency evacuation.

Hot climate: factors to consider

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme levels, with limited shade and, at times, high humidity adding to the challenge. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but staying well hydrated, wearing suitable clothing, and using sun protection is essential.

Before traveling, consider your ability to remain active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have any concerns, especially if you have cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two before the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

Remote environment: factors to consider

Some parts of this trip take place in areas where access to medical facilities and emergency services may be limited. This may mean that reaching medical care takes longer than you might normally expect, or that local medical facilities have fewer resources than those you may be used to at home.

If someone becomes unwell or injured, initial treatment may be provided locally before onward travel to a larger hospital or city for further care. Evacuation could involve changing the planned route or using different forms of transportation to reach appropriate medical facilities. Mobile phone coverage may also be intermittent in some locations.

Your guide is trained to manage situations in remote environments and will monitor the group and respond appropriately if any issues arise. However, it’s important that you let your guide know straight away if you feel unwell or experience any health concerns during the trip.

Before booking, consider your personal health and ability to travel in locations where access to medical care may be delayed. If you have any pre-existing medical conditions or concerns, we recommend seeking advice from a medical professional and discussing them with your host before traveling.

All travelers must have suitable travel insurance that covers the activities included in the trip and emergency medical evacuation if required.

If someone had told me this would end up being one of the best trips I’ve ever taken, I probably would have smiled politely and assumed they were overselling it. They weren’t. I’ve traveled quite a bit and have done guided trips before, including another adventure with Much Better Adventures, but this one somehow managed to exceed every expectation. The hiking itself was extraordinary. Day after day it felt like we had an entire mountain range to ourselves. Instead of crowds, we shared the trails with grazing cows, wild goats balancing effortlessly on impossible cliffs, and local villagers who greeted us with genuine warmth everywhere we went. There were moments where we’d stop, look around, and realize there wasn’t another hiking group in sight—just endless mountains stretching in every direction. It’s becoming increasingly rare to find places that still feel truly wild, and Kosovo and North Macedonia absolutely delivered. A huge part of what made this trip so special was our guide, Uta. Knowing she summited all fourteen of the world’s 8,000-meter peaks is impressive on paper, but spending a week with her is what really leaves the lasting impression. She never made the trip about her achievements. Instead, she quietly shared her experience whenever it could help us become better hikers or better understand the mountains we were walking through. She knew exactly when to encourage us, when to slow the pace, and when to gently push us beyond what we thought we were capable of. Throughout the trip I never questioned our safety for a second. She was calm, professional, incredibly knowledgeable, and genuinely kind. One thing I love about Much Better Adventures is that they consistently make complicated travel feel effortless. This was my second trip with them, and once again they absolutely nailed the logistics. Every transfer, every accommodation, every meal, every detail seemed to happen exactly when it should. If there were problems behind the scenes, we never knew about them because they were already solved before they reached us. That allows you to spend your energy enjoying the experience instead of worrying about it. The accommodations somehow matched the adventure perfectly. One night you’re wild camping beneath an incredible sky, and the next you’re soaking in a spa at a five-star hotel. It never felt random; it felt like the perfect balance between adventure and comfort. But what surprised me most was the people. I honestly joked by the end that Much Better Adventures must secretly interview everyone before accepting them, because I can’t explain how our group came together so naturally. Everyone clicked almost immediately. We came from different places and different backgrounds, yet every dinner was filled with laughter, stories, and conversations that somehow never ran out. By the end of the trip, saying goodbye felt surprisingly difficult. These weren’t just people I hiked with, they became friends I’ll genuinely stay in touch with. When I think back on this adventure, I don’t just remember the incredible landscapes. I remember laughing around the dinner table after long hiking days. I remember watching the sunrise over silent mountains. I remember the lessons Uta shared. I remember realizing how lucky we were to experience a part of Europe that still feels authentic, uncrowded, and wonderfully untouched. That’s what makes this trip so memorable. It’s not just a hiking holiday. It’s one of those rare experiences that reminds you why you travel in the first place. To Uta, the entire local team, and everyone at Much Better Adventures, thank you for creating something I’ll be talking about for years. I’ll absolutely be back.

If you’re even thinking about booking this trek, stop debating and just do it. I just got back from hiking through the Sharr Mountains, and it was one of the most incredible travel experiences of my life. Much Better Adventures has once again exceeded every expectation. They have a way of creating trips that are so much more than a vacation—they’re experiences that challenge you, inspire you, and stay with you long after you’ve returned home. Our guide, Uta, was truly exceptional. She struck the perfect balance of encouraging us to push beyond what we thought we were capable of while always making sure everyone felt supported, safe, and included. Her knowledge, passion for the mountains, and genuine care for the group made this trip unforgettable. One of the biggest surprises was the people. We came from all over the world, but our shared love of adventure brought us together almost instantly. By the end of the trek, we weren’t just a group of strangers—we were a team, cheering each other on through every climb, swapping stories over dinner, laughing nonstop, and creating friendships and memories I’ll treasure forever. Every day felt like a new adventure. The landscapes were absolutely breathtaking, with endless ridgelines, alpine meadows, glacial lakes, and panoramic views that rarely had another person in sight. It genuinely felt like we had an entire mountain range to ourselves. The accommodations were warm and welcoming, the local food was outstanding, and the hospitality everywhere we went made us feel at home. If you’re looking for a destination that feels untouched, offers spectacular hiking, immerses you in local culture, and connects you with an amazing group of like-minded travelers, this is the tour. It will push you physically, reward you with some of the most stunning scenery you’ll ever see, and leave you wondering why more people haven’t discovered this hidden gem. Without question, this was an adventure I’ll remember for the rest of my life.

One of the hardest multi days I’ve done. Mostly because of the “Balkan uphill” (essentially all ascent is direct and along the steepest line) and the relentless pace of our great leader. But the rewards are brilliant. Hiking in pristine environments, with very few other people. Really witnessing a true undeveloped corner of Europe. Very mixed bag accommodation. From stunning hotels and mountain lodges to some guest houses that require you to really lower expectations! But delicious food all round!

  • Derek S.

This week-long trek kicked my butt, but in the best way! The views somehow got better and better as the days went on, our guide Uta was truly a mountaineering legend, and our group was a wonderful mix of people from all walks of life. Highly recommended!

This trip to the Sharr Mountains was truly something special, and I couldn't recommend it more if you're looking for an off-the-beaten-track adventure. The mountains are incredibly beautiful, with trails winding through endless wildflower meadows and some of the most stunning views I've ever seen. Every day felt like walking through a postcard. Uta is simply the best guide you could hope for. With her impressive mountaineering experience and genuine love for her home mountains, she guided us with so much care, warmth, and passion. The guesthouses are simple, but that's part of the charm. The hospitality was so genuine, with wonderful home-cooked dinners shared around long tables outside, with great conversations and the mountains all around us. And, as always, the group was full of kind, adventurous, like-minded people. The combination of the incredible scenery, the wonderful company, and Uta's guidance made this a trip I'll never forget.

Uta was an inspirational guide to the Sharr mountains. We had an excellent group and I thoroughly enjoyed it.

This hiking trip is a truly magical adventure. As you criss-cross between the borders of Kosovo and North Macedonia, you’ll rarely see another soul, meaning this untouched wilderness is all yours to drink in and explore. We had an amazing guide, Uta, who is an absolute mountaineering beast. She expertly guided us on trails that sometimes looked like they weren’t even there, taking us through fields of flowers, stream crossings, zigzags up peaks, and to hidden mountain lakes and waterfalls. She’s got some serious mountains under her belt, including Everest, so you know you’re in good hands. She also handled all the logistics so smoothly and with a smile, meaning our group of about 15 really never had to worry about anything. The scenery is just incredible in the Sharr Mountains, and every day brought us something new. I’d say the first day is probably the hardest because you’ll do a fair bit of hiking just straight up the mountain, but the rest of the climbs are a bit more gentle or involve zig zagging up. Don’t get me wrong, you’ll be tired at the end of the day, but we had a couple newbie multi-day hikers on the trip, and they were able to complete all the hikes (blisters and all). The accommodations were simple, clean, and comfortable, and honestly cooked us some amazing homestyle meals. I’m vegetarian, and I never went hungry on this trip. The hearty vegetarian stew at the historic Ljuboten Mountain Hut after the first day of hiking was one of our favorite dishes of the entire trip (including the meat eaters!). It also helped that after every day of hiking, wherever we stayed offered up cold beers for around 2 euros. We made some great memories playing cards at tables outside as the sun set and we polished off a Peja or Zlaten Dab. The Balkans truly feel like an undiscovered gem, but I have a feeling it won’t stay that way for long. So if you’re on the fence about the trip, I’d just go for it sooner rather than later. From the incredible friends I made to the stunning hiking we tackled, I’m seriously going to remember this trip for a long time!

Wonderful trip with wonderful people! Amazing trip, beautiful scenery and lots of laughter thanks to a great group. Uta is a fantastic guide who made this trip even better, everything was well organized. Beautiful and great accommodation - sometimes rather basic but always clean, with great food, and at fantastic spots!

  • Hilary S.

A truly stunning part of the world with very few people in it! Walks were varied and accommodation too, giving a real insight into Albanian villages.

  • Daryn A.

I had an amazing time on this trip. The hiking and routes were brilliant and stunning every day. The food was great & the accommodation each night was always very clean and comfortable. Uta was the perfect guide with bags of knowledge & a great sense of humour. We had a great team spirit in a group of like minded people.

  • Very good type 2 fun!

    Thomas E. July 2026
  • True wilderness + amazing people!

    Derek S. July 2026
This week-long trek kicked my butt, but in the best way! The views somehow got better and better as the days went on, our guide Uta was truly a mountaineering legend, and our group was a wonderful mix of people from all walks of life. Highly recommended!
  • A Hidden Gem in the Balkans

    Lene Z. July 2026
  • Uta was an inspirational guide

    ANDREW W. July 2026
Uta was an inspirational guide to the Sharr mountains. We had an excellent group and I thoroughly enjoyed it.
  • Magical Hiking Hopping Borders

    Grace W. July 2026
  • Great trip with great people!

    Lars G. July 2026
  • Hidden gem

    Hilary S. July 2026
A truly stunning part of the world with very few people in it! Walks were varied and accommodation too, giving a real insight into Albanian villages.
  • Perfect!

    Daryn A. July 2026
I had an amazing time on this trip. The hiking and routes were brilliant and stunning every day. The food was great & the accommodation each night was always very clean and comfortable. Uta was the perfect guide with bags of knowledge & a great sense of humour. We had a great team spirit in a group of like minded people.
  • Wonderful week in the Sharr Mountains

    Annette P. July 2026
We had a great time in a beautiful landscape. Thanks to our incredible and wonderful guide Uta.
  • Incredible Scenery

    Dominic L. June 2026
Had raised eyebrows from friends and family before this trip. “Why Kosovo?” But my instincts were right! If you are looking for a trip with breathtaking mountainous views, wild flower meadows, and forests with waterfalls, then this trip will not disappoint. I had to pinch myself on the views being offered on our hikes. Some of the days are hard and long, but all offer a rewarding backdrop of steep rocky faces, mountain tops, and forests, intertwined with working life in the Balkans - in fact we met more cows and sheepdogs than other hikers. It was peaceful and uninterrupted . The villages are all hospitable. At the end of a hike, locals come forward to ask where you are from and are curious to know your thoughts on their country. My answer to them was always: “incredible, beautiful. ” The border hopping into North Macedonia and back into Kosovo also added to the excitement and achievement. The food was generally excellent . The accommodation on some nights was basic, with limited facilities, but in a way that added to the charm. Lucky to also have a group who was so relaxed — all solo travellers, up for fun, adventure, and sharing experiences. Highly recommend.
  • Exceeded Expectations

    Katie N. June 2026
This hiking trip was amazing. The views were spectacular and did really exceed what I had expected. You are imersed into the local culture which is a very special part of it. Each day had its own special moment.

Great tour with great people, loved every moment of it!
  • Autumn adventures with a twist!

    Kate E. October 2025
Although the weather significantly changed the state of play (autumn hiking to winter hiking), our travels, adventures and experiences were not compromised a a consequence. In fact our guide Uta made the trip even more memorable and meaningful. We were guided through the conditions expertly to ensure not only did we see and climb as much as we should have, we also got some winter skills training and the opportunity to experience a whole new realm of mountain activity. Thanks to Uta and welcoming Kosovan and North Macedonian hospitality we had a five star experience and came away much richer in knowledge both about the mountains and the countries. Highly recommend! Definitely planning a visit again.
  • GREAT TRIP!!!

    Jakub K. October 2025
What a trip! We were all expecting warm weather, but instead, we got snow – definitely not what we packed for! ❄️😅 Because of that, the original programme had to change a bit, but honestly, it turned out even better than expected. Big shoutout to our guide Uta, who was absolutely amazing! She quickly reorganised everything so we could still go trekking despite the surprise weather. The new plan worked out perfectly – we still got to experience the beauty of the area, just with a wintery twist! The food throughout the trip was so good – every meal was a treat. And the group? Just awesome. Great vibes, lots of laughs, and an all-around fun crew to travel with. Despite the unexpected snow, it was a fantastic trip. Would definitely recommend it – just maybe pack for all seasons, just in case! 😉
  • Hiking in Kosovo and North Macedonia

    Ian L. October 2025
This was a great trip, we had very early snowfall for October which changed the schedule for the week and made the hiking slightly harder. Our guide Uta was exceptional, and worked so hard for us, having to change most of the accommodation and planned hikes for the entire week as well as sorting out extra transport. But she still took us on some incredible hikes! She is an incredible person. The food in the huts, hostels and hotels was plentiful and very nice.
  • I loved it!

    Hannah J. October 2025
Just loved it. I adored the wildcard weather event which flipped the itinerary on its head. Uta handled it with ease and grace and it turned out to be a brilliant trip. Winter hiking was so fun and added an extra special touch to this adventure. Thank you Uta for keeping it incredible despite some very obvious challenges.
  • Unforgettable experience

    Joanna K. October 2025
Everything about that trip was absolutely incredible. What was meant to be an autumn hike unexpectedly turned into a snowy adventure — and it couldn’t have been more magical! ❄️ Uta was phenomenal; her vast experience shone through every step of the way, and I felt completely safe with her guidance. The Sharr Mountains did not disappoint, and the food was honestly the best I’ve ever had on a trip. I’m giving Uta and MBA a solid ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for this unforgettable experience!
  • It was a much changed

    Benjamin S. October 2025
It was a much changed itinerary due to unprecedented early snowfall. So, this review is left mainly to praise our guide, Uta, for her ability to rearrange alternative treks and accommodation. She was excellent, first class. I've got around 25 'small group' trips under my belt with various companies and have not come across a finer guide.
  • Loved it

    Nicole M. September 2025
A great trip with beautiful scenery and some adorable places to stay each night.
  • Great trek

    Andyzonfrillo September 2025
First adventure with much better adventures. Was fantastic. Will be looking at more of their trips.
  • Excellent trip in a gorgeous area

    kathleen z. September 2025
This was our first MBA trip and we were more than impressed. Kosovo and N Macedonia are absolutely stunning - the scenery and mountains are beautiful and totally untouched by tourism. We rarely saw other walkers. The hikes took us through varied terrain and topography. The food was beyond amazing - local, fresh and different every day. The accommodation was perfectly rustic and local - such lovely people along the way. Our fellow hikers were an amazing group - great fun and truly fantastic people. Maybe best of all was our guide Nadir - an unassuming local with an endless depth of knowledge about the area and mountains. We felt in good hands with this mountain ranger who kept us safe and entertained us with his stories - a real sweetheart with a great smile and better laugh. Can’t say enough good things about this trip - thank you Nadir, Uta and Meto - a fantastic introduction to MBA and hiking in the Balkans
  • amazing trip and great views

    SOPHIE B. September 2025
loved the trip, the group were all lovely, good variety of accom and food! Nadir the guide was great, he knew the area very well and had lots of facts to tell us! There was a decent amount of places to fill up water on the hikes but did need to carry a decent amount of water with us.
  • Awesome

    Sarah W. September 2025
What an incredible week with Uta as our guide in the Sharr Mountains. It was definitely challenging but I just loved the remoteness and how unspoilt the landscape is. Just incredible.
  • One of the best hikes

    Wayne P. September 2025
This is my 3rd trip with MBA and perhaps the best so far. To hike where there are next to no people is great. Mountains are so quiet with some paths difficult to find because they are hardly used. the hiking was challenging. The mountain accomidation was basic and we could have done with more than one loo between the 14 of us a couple of evenings when we all wanted a shower but the views made up for it. Only grumble was the first nights hotel. I expect more from a city hotel, even a basic one, only one key per room and with reception shut most of the time it was a pain. limited facilities and very average rooms. did not spoil a really good week.
  • Great Hiking Adventure

    David L. August 2025
I would really recommend this trip. Great hiking through stunning and totally unspoilt terrain. Well organized and Uta is an excellent guide.
  • An amazing hiking adventure

    Victoria L. August 2025
This was a fantastic experience from start to finish. Uta is truly a legend of a guide and has so much to share about hiking but also about her passion for developing sustainable tourism in Kosovo. The hikes are challenging, and it was hot , but they were manageable and the experience of deserted trails and untouched landscapes was well worth the effort. A truly unique trip and one that you will feel privileged to experience. We had a fantastic group to travel with as well, everyone was so welcoming and enthusiastic.
  • Wonderful mountains

    Sharon N. August 2025
The trip was fantastic - beautiful walking, friendly people and great atmosphere in the group. The hotel in Prishtina was disappointing, but the trip still gets five stars overall because everything else was so brilliant. The mountains are lovely, and hiking through them we had varied landscapes, and a chance for a dip in two mountain lakes. We saw few other people, and often felt like we had the mountain to ourselves. Uta is an amazing guide - so passionate about the mountains and about Kosovo. She looked after the group not only in the mountains, but also in the evenings, making sure that all goes smoothly in the accommodations. She was respected by everyone we came across. Would definitely recommend this trip to any keen hiker.
  • Amazing adventure

    Emily M. August 2025
Honestly one of the best MBA treks I've been on. An awesome group, with so much to share and so many laughs. An incredibly remote trek, where we saw so few people. Brilliant hospitality in the various mountain huts and guesthouses (and I have quite tricky dietary requirements to accommodate). Fantastic guide, who knew what she was about and kept us all together beautifully. Stunning scenery, with not only gorgeous trekking but also mountain lakes to take a dip in. I couldn't imagine a better experience.

FAQs

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location and accommodation, and in some places options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND
Kosovo’s cuisine is rooted in Balkan mountain farming and shaped by Ottoman-era influences. Thanks to its continental climate and a long tradition of preserving food for winter, meals are often hearty, built around grilled meats, dairy such as yoghurt and cheese, beans, peppers and pastry pies. You’ll also see plenty of seasonal produce, pickles and relishes, plus simple soups and slow-cooked stews that make sense for cold months and rural life.

SPECIAL DIETS

Vegetarian
Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided your host is aware in advance. There are plenty of appealing meat-free dishes to look forward to including burek-style pies filled with spinach and cheese, comforting bean stews, baked stuffed peppers, cabbage and vine leaves, and delicious spreads and pickles served with breads and salads.

Vegan
Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance, but you should expect fewer options and variety that you may be used to, especially in more rural areas where meals are traditionally built around meat and dairy. Vegan-friendly choices are becoming more commonplace however - look for sarma (cabbage or vine leaves stuffed with rice and veg), vegetable and rice bakes, ajvar (roasted red pepper relish) and turshi (mixed pickles) spreads, lentil or bean soups, and grilled seasonal vegetables.

Kosher
Fully certified kosher options are limited in Kosovo and are mainly found in larger cities. On this trip, kosher-supervised kitchens and ingredients may not be available, so vegetarian or vegan meals can be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above, and plan ahead with your guide.

Halal
Kosovo is a majority Muslim community, so halal food is widely available and pork is rarely consumed. Most local, traditional and kebab shops, including mountain accommodations, are naturally halal-friendly. Dedicated, halal-certified restaurants are more common in cities like Prizren and Prishtina.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten-Free
Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, options may be more limited compared to those without dietary requirements. While your local hosts will do their best, it’s worth knowing that gluten-free provision may vary as it can be difficult to source specialist products and when in restaurants, some kitchens may be unable to guarantee no cross-contamination, especially in rural areas. Therefore, meals will more-often be based on naturally gluten-free dishes more often than specialist substitutes. That said, many standard meals already include several options without gluten, even without special preparation, including meats, potato dishes, rice, eggs and salads. Please do consider bringing your favourite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

Lactose-Free
Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Many traditional dishes are naturally lactose-free or can easily be prepared without dairy, such as vegetable dishes, pasta, rice and potato dishes, legumes, and salads.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy (including Coeliac disease), please get in touch with our Customer team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority.

*Please note that when travelling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods and labelling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. Whilst your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

Yes, you can leave any luggage that you don't need during the hike with the host, it will be transported by vehicle and available on Days 4 and 7.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

The Sharr Mountains are pretty similar to most European mountain climates: cold and snowy in the winter and sunny and pleasant in the summer.

This trip runs between May and October, when daytime temperatures average between 70-81°F in Pristina, and are usually in the region of 50-63°F in the mountains. It gets cool at night with the potential for temperatures to hover only a few degrees above freezing, so make sure you pack some warm clothing too.

Like any mountain environment, be prepared for sudden changes in the weather. Although the summers are generally nice and warm, the rain can set in without a moment's notice, so do pack accordingly. A layering system is essential in the mountains.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 220.86kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
