Key Information

Day 1

Journey to Dahar, deep in Tunisia's south

Douriet Village, Tunisia.
Driving
6hrs

Upon arrival at Enfidha-Hammamet Airport you'll be met by your local guide, then you'll hop on a long scenic transfer south, deep into Tunisia's remote Dahar region. Here you'll find one of the oldest mountain ranges in Africa inhabited by the Amazigh, the indigenous people referred to as the Berbers. Over the course of the week you'll be hiking through a striking arid landscape, dotted by rocky foothills and desert valleys, oasis towns, wild canyons and ancient villages carved out of rock. The region's allure extends beyond its historic citadels into the boundless expanse of the Grand Erg Oriental, in the Sahara Desert. Tonight you'll bed down in a characterful family-run gite in the town of Douiret, a stunning mountaintop Berber village where you'll enjoy the unique experience of sleeping in traditional troglodyte cave-like rooms.

Day 2

Hike to the fortified Berber village of Chenini

Chenini village, Tunisia
Hiking
3hrs · 5mi · 1253ft up · 1024ft down

Enjoy a traditional Berber breakfast at your guesthouse, then set off on foot and descend the hill of Douiret, along a scenic trail immersed in a barren landscape, with rocky hills and red plateaus dotted by palm, fig, and olive trees. You'll be trekking along one of the 12 stages of the Great Dahar Crossing, Tunisia's first long-distance trail, reaching the impressive 12th century ksar (castle) of Chenini in time for lunch. This former fortified granary stretches into the tops of two mountains, separated by the white-washed mosque of the Seven Sleepers in the middle. Today, the hamlet is still inhabited by about 600 people, although much of this ancient village is in ruins. Step back in time as you wander around the cave dwellings and narrow alleys, then catch a transfer back to your cozy gite in Douiret. Tonight you'll tuck into a traditional homecooked dinner, featuring Tunisian dishes from the area.

Day 3

Hike the Berber gems of Zammour and Ksar Hallouf

Zammour, Berber town in Dahar - Tunisia
Hiking
4-5hrs · 9mi · 1719ft up · 1801ft down
Driving
2hrs

Leave Douiret after breakfast and transfer two hours north toward Zammour, an authentic Berber village hidden in the heart of the Matmata Mountains. Today's hiking trail winds through rocky hills and valleys typical of the Dahar region, with stunning panoramic views of the surrounding desert landscapes. You'll also pass an old olive press, a small oasis, and several small settlements where you can get a unique perspective of Berber farming traditions and learn about the resilience of these remote desert communities. Reach the well-preserved Ksar Hallouf in the afternoon, a former stronghold against invaders, with time to explore its unique architecture. Tonight you'll bed down in another authentic troglodyte guesthouse located on a permaculture farm on the outskirts of Zammour.

Day 4

From the heights of Jbel Mzanzen to the Sahara

Sunset in the Sahara, Tunisia
Hiking
5-6hrs · 10mi · 2133ft up · 1801ft down
Driving
2.5hrs

Start early today to embark on a more challenging yet rewarding route to the top of Jbal Mzanzen (2,001ft), one of the highest points in the Dahar region. Setting off in Zammour, the trail leads into the foothills of a prominent mountain range characterized by rocky slopes and sparse vegetation, typical of semi-arid regions. As you ascend Jbel Mzanzen, the terrain can be rugged and uneven, requiring some careful navigation. At the top, you'll be rewarded with some breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding mountains and valleys, dotted by ancient ruins and fortified granaries, testimony of a rich cultural heritage amidst the stark beauty of the desert landscape. Next, transfer to Douz, the gateway to the Great Oriental Erg. Pay a quick visit to the fascinating desert museum, then settle into your comfortable desert camp in Sabria, and tuck into dinner around the fire. Enjoy your first night under the stars, lulled by the tranquility of the desert and the twinkling of the stars.

Day 5

Sahara desert trek and a night under the starry sky

Sabria Douz Sahara landscape, Tunisia
Hiking
4-5hrs · 9mi · 164ft up · 164ft down

Grab breakfast at your camp, and get ready for an unforgettable adventure into the Tunisian desert. Today you'll hike among the monumental beauty of the Saharan dunes, accompanied by a caravan of camels which will be carrying your gear. The Grand Oriental Erg is known for its striking sand formations, sculpted by the wind, which reach impressive heights and create breathtaking vistas that extend as far as the eye can see. At sunset, you'll pitch your tents and enjoy the spectacle of the dunes bathed in a golden glow. Later, when night falls, warm up around a campfire. Far from any light pollution, watch the desert sky revealing itself in all its splendor, studded with bright stars and perhaps even a few shooting stars. Enjoy a delicious meal before you fall asleep in a comfortable bivouac, listening to the gentle rustling of the sand.

Day 6

Trek the desert dunes back to Douz and on to Tozeur

Palms and loungers by the pool of Dar Tozeour Hotel in Tunisia.
Hiking
3hrs · 6mi · 164ft up · 164ft down
Driving
2hrs

Wake up in the remoteness of the Sahara, then trek back to Douz via a different route traversing more giant dunes. Enjoy a well-deserved shower in the fixed camp, before continuing by transfer. Stop off at the vast Chot el Jerid salt lake, the largest salt lake in the Sahara with a surface area of more than 2,700 square miles. With luck, you may be able to admire its rainbow-colored salt deposits. Your scenic journey ends in the old city of Tozeur, a beautiful oasis with thousands of palm trees, known for growing the best dates in all of Tunisia. You'll have time to explore the vast oasis, as well as the old medina and its marvelous geometric architecture. Tonight you'll stay at a luxury riad, a haven of peace with hidden interior courtyards filled with vegetation, a swimming pool and a spa where you can try an (optional) traditional hammam.

Day 7

Trek up the Sidi Bouhlel canyon and head to the seaside gem of Hergla

Person hiking in the Chebika canyon, Tunisia.
Hiking
4hrs · 6mi · 1575ft up · 1575ft down
Driving
6hrs

Grab breakfast, then leave Tozeur behind and take a short transfer to Sidi Bouhlel, 12 miles northeast of town. Prepare to be blown away at each turn and bend as you hike through an impressive canyon with towering cliffs, winding paths and hidden pools amidst stunning rock formations that date back millions of years. This site is also the filming location of several famous movies, such as Star Wars and Indiana Jones. This afternoon, rest your legs as you embark on a long journey back up north. You'll spend your final night of the trip in the charming seaside town of Hergla, a hidden Tunisian gem along the Mediterranean coastline in the Gulf of Hammamet. Compared to other popular resorts nearby, Hergla preserves an authentic small-town charm and it's the perfect place to relax after a busy week exploring the arid wilderness of Dahar. If you have energy, join an optional farewell dinner with your group, then get some rest in the comfort of your local guesthouse.

Day 8

Goodbye Tunisia

Beware camels crossing sign.

After seven days in the arid mountains of Dahar and the Sahara Desert, it's time to bid farewell to your fellow travelers and head back to the airport for your flight home. Enfidha Airport is just a short drive away, so your host can arrange a transfer any time you choose to depart today. If your flight is later in the afternoon or evening, you can make the most of your time – perhaps soaking up the sun on one of Hergla's beaches. Alternatively, get lost in the town's alleys shopping for local crafts, immersed in the picturesque cobblestones, whitewashed walls, cobalt window frames and pink bougainvillea, with the sea providing the perfect backdrop.

Your host will inform you of the exact pick-up timings prior to your trip and you will then head south to the remote region of Dahar, with an expected journey time of approximately five hours. On Day 8 your final hotel is just a 20-minute drive from the airport, and a free departure transfer is included any time you choose to depart.

Transfers are included in the main price if you arrive on Day 1 and depart on Day 8. If you are arriving early or want to stay on longer, you can contact your host to request private airport transfers and refer to the Optional Extras for details on the rates.

Travel options

There are frequent direct flights to Enfidha-Hammamet International Airport from airports in the UK and Europe. If your flight doesn't land by 12:30 on Day 1, consider arriving a day earlier and spending a night in the nearby town of Hergla so that you can join the group transfer on Day 1. Your host can arrange an additional night of accommodation, subject to availability. Alternatively, you can opt to fly in to Tunis Airport and request an additional private transfer to join the group in Enfidha on Day 1 (recommended) or directly in Douiret, although the latter would involve a long and expensive transfer. What is the food like?

Tunisian shared meal

Tunisia’s cuisine reflects the diverse history and cultural influence of various civilizations that have crossed its lands, including the Berbers, Arabs, Ottoman Turks, and French. One of the defining characteristics of Tunisian cuisine is its use of spices such as cumin, ground coriander, and saffron, plus harissa, a fiery chili paste made from red peppers, garlic, and spices. While in Dahar, you'll have the opportunity to enjoy a spread of included home-cooked meals and some fresh picnic lunches. Staple dishes include couscous (semolina wheat prepared with a stew of meat or vegetables), tajine (different from Moroccan tagine – made with beaten eggs, cheese, meat, and vegetables), shorba (soups), salads, pastas, stews, kaak (pastries), and samsa (a traditional pastry). In the desert, you'll learn how to make the typical Berber 'sand bread' and warm up with some mint tea.

Vegetarians, vegans, and other dietary requirements and allergies can be accommodated – please just request this on your passenger info form.

2026 departures: we have added to the meal inclusions. Lunch is now included on Day 2 and dinner is included on Day 7.

What is the accommodation like?

Douiret

Spend the first two nights of your trip in a unique lodging in the Berber village of Douiret. Raouf and his family will welcome you warmly to the traditional troglodytic-style rooms carved out of rock (or, for the claustrophobic, in one of the ghorfa, fitted out in old granaries overlooking the yard). Accommodation will be in twin-share rooms and bathroom facilities are shared (separate for men and women). You're welcome to hang out in the many common areas in the property, including cozy, colorful decorated lounges and panoramic terraces. WiFi is available in the guesthouse's restaurant, where you'll also have your daily breakfasts and home-cooked evening meals.

Dar Ennaim Gite, Tunisia.
Zammour

Spend one night in Zammour at Dar Ennaim, a family-run rural lodge nestled in an idyllic setting, in the hollow of a mountain. Accommodation will be in authentic twin-share troglodyte dwellings, with traditional decor and private restrooms. The property has its own permaculture farm, from which the owners source fresh organic ingredients for the dinners served on-site.

Fire camp in the Sahara, Tunisia
Sahara Desert

Before embarking on your overnight Sahara Desert trek you'll spend a night at Dunes Insolites, a comfortable fixed desert camp offering twin-share tent accommodation, with hot showers and a café with shisha. On the following night, you'll venture deeper into the desert followed by a caravan of camels. Here, you'll spend a peaceful night in a bivouac, either on top of a dune for unrivaled panoramic views, or near an oasis to benefit from the freshness and surrounding greenery. Your camel drivers will prepare the refuges for the night, as well as a delicious meal cooked over a wood fire, under the stars.

Courtyard, Dar Nejma, Tozeur, Tunisia: Hotel
Tozeur

Spend one night within the medina of Tozeur at a beautiful luxury riad, usually Dar Nejma or Dar Tozeur. Behind their imposing studded door, these riads are a peaceful haven, offering several lush, interior courtyards, a swimming pool, a spa, indoor and outdoor lounges, terraces overlooking the villa and a gourmet restaurant. All the twin-share rooms come with ensuite toilets and have unique decor and character. Occasionally, due to the makeup of the group and the size of these characterful accommodation, the group may be split across two properties or accommodated at another riad of a similar standard.

Dar Jedeti Khadija, Hergla, Tunisia - Photo: Host
Hergla

On your final night, you’ll stay in Hergla in a characterful local guesthouse – usually Dar Jedeti Khadija or Dar Yessine. These properties offer simple yet nicely decorated rooms, some with a terrace or patio, as well as air conditioning. Depending on the group size, you may occasionally be split across two properties.

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room and tent at the hotels and desert camps can be booked for an extra charge, see Optional Extras for the price. Please request this at the time of booking (please note that availability is limited due to the size of the accommodation used).

This trip has been rated as Moderate

This trip requires a good level of fitness. You'll be hiking up to 5-6 hours daily along paths of easy to moderate difficulty with some occasional steep or loose sections as well as some rocky trails, and up and down sandy Sahara dunes. The heat, remoteness, and dusty conditions can make some of the days feel more tiring than expected, but overall a reasonable level of fitness and sense of adventure is all you need to enjoy the trip.

There are two long drives (up to 5 hours) on Day 1 and 7 to travel to and from the remote southern region of Dahar, plus a couple of hours transfers on most days. These will be a great chance to rest your legs while taking in dazzling views of Tunisia desert scenery and fascinating Berber settlements along the way. There may also be a few early starts to avoid the heat and make the most of the journey, so a sense of adventure and willingness here is key to enjoying the experience.

What will I need to carry?

You'll need to have a larger soft duffel bag suitable for all your belongings which will be transported for you by camels and jeeps, and then a small daypack (20-30 liters) to carry personal items during each day. During the overnight desert trek, your main luggage will stay behind at the fixed camp and you'll need a small overnight kit, plus all communal camping equipment and food will be transported for you by the camels.

Hot climate: factors to consider

This trip operates in areas where daytime temperatures can reach extreme levels, with limited shade and, at times, high humidity adding to the challenge. These conditions can affect physical performance and increase the risk of dehydration or heat-related illness. Your guide will adjust the pace and monitor the group closely, but staying well hydrated, wearing suitable clothing, and using sun protection is essential.

Before traveling, consider your ability to remain active in high temperatures and consult a medical professional if you have any concerns, especially if you have cardiovascular or heat-sensitive conditions. Arriving a day or two before the trip may help you adjust gradually to the heat.

The best time to visit southern Tunisia’s Dahar region is between October and May, when daytime temperatures are generally pleasant, averaging 64–81°F. This is a true desert environment, meaning there can be a big difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures.

While days can feel warm, winter months (December–February) can be very cold at night, particularly when camping in the desert around Douz. Temperatures can drop to around 32°F or even lower, and cool desert winds can make evenings and early mornings feel colder than expected.

To stay comfortable, it’s important to pack warm layers, including a good well-insulated jacket and thermals, alongside lighter clothing for daytime hiking. Being prepared for both warm days and cold nights will ensure you get the most out of this desert adventure.

A great mix of accommodation and terrains for hiking. Two long transfer days but this didn’t detract from the experience. Whilst hiking is classed as moderate, it was worth noting that some elements were quite technical and your need a good for heights on a couple of the sections. Packing list was not specific enough for the cold night temperatures.

The hiking was varied, from desert to dunes and canyons and a great way to see a different side to the country. Some of the travel days were longer than anticipated once rest stops were added in but the transport was comfortable and the roads good. One word of warning if travelling in the winter - it can be very cold particularly at night so layer up appropriately

A very different hiking trail compared to the ones I usually do. Hiking through the sand dunes and the wild camping experience were the highlights for me. The rest of the landscape and viewpoints were somewhat similar to the hikes. The guides were very helpful, and I enjoyed the trip throughout.

Needs Refinement

Explicit detail around the heating of accommodation is needed. The tents for the wild camping need to zip up, none of them completely closed. The two day guide for the walks was great, a real ambassador, he made a huge effort. Our guide for the whole tour would benefit from a screen detox and although helpful when approached, perhaps could engage more. The second accommodation needs to be removed, it looks nice but it really missed the mark in cleanliness and quality of the food.

Julia(December 2025)
Well organised hiking tour

The tour was well-organised and offered a lot of variety—different landscapes every day. The accommodations were cool and unique, though it was pretty cold in December, especially without heating in most places.

One thing to note: the driving time was longer than stated in the itinerary. Day 1 was over 7 hours with short lunch and toilet stops, so we didn’t get to our guest house until after 8 PM. Definitely come prepared for long drives with snacks and entertainment!

The hiking was mostly flat, but some scrambling was needed. The wind made it tougher, like a natural workout! Overall, a great trip, but be ready for cold weather in December and long drives on a couple of days.

What a wonderful trip - I loved the varied landscapes and accommodation. Be warned if you’re travelling in December - it was cold with a bitter wind when walking and the nights were also cold. Take lots of layers. I took my own sleeping bag, which I was grateful for, especially with the night wild camping as the duvets and sleeping bags provided were not very clean.

Great trip that gives you the opportunity to see authentic Tunisia. Hiking in the south through the mountains and remote Berber settlements we saw no other tourists. But bear in mind the local guesthouses do not have heating and it was very cold! Pack thermals and lots of warm clothes if doing this trip in winter. You won’t need shorts and T-shirts!

A long time ago in a Galaxy far, far away. . . . . . . a band of plucky Rebels ventured South escaping from the Empire of package holidays in the North.

This is not a Star Wars tour but with so many locations from the films in close proximity it's easy for fans to indulge. Our fantastic guide Ahmed arranging some extra stops for those needing to experience the Force.

You do feel quite the oddity arriving amongst the package holiday makers in your hiking boots but once whisked away to the south you leave all that behind you! The hikes were comfortable with a little scrambling at times but nothing technical and the terrain varied from rugged canyons to hiking barefoot in the sand dunes.

The real treat was the variety of the accomodation, rustic but so unique from cave dwellings to tents amongst the dunes under the Milky Way. The nights at Dunes Insolites and the wild camp an absolute highlight.

Whilst overall a fantastic trip with a brilliant group of like minded travellers it's worth being aware that the drive to the south (and then back again) are long. 5 hours on the itinerary but factoring in for rest stops its more like 7. That, and the fact the final two nights accomodation meant the group was split were the only slight downers on an otherwise amazing week

Rebecca B.(November 2025)
An enjoyable, interesting and well - structured tour

We hiked in dramatic, varied and and unusual landscapes and learned some interesting history. The accommodation on the tour was quite unique and it was lovely to spend the night in the beautiful riad after the wild - camping night in the desert.

Ahmed was a great guide and was very well organised.

Some of the restaurants could have catered for vegetarians a bit better as often the meat had simply been removed with no replacement.

Overall a great trip and highly recommended.

Great adventure to Tunisia! Guides were brilliant, our driver was really good. The only negative I have is the riad second from last day, we were put into two different ones although the same company one was definitely better than the other and we felt it wasn’t quite luxurious as it was made out to be. The hiking was incredible as were the views. Thankyou

From sleeping in caves, in the desert to fantastic riads this trip covers them all. The hiking also encompasses a big variety of landscapes from rocky canyons to flat deserts.

A wonderful week with wonderful people in a wonderful place

Thanks to Ahmed and the team for looking after us so well as we hiked trough a different setting everyday. Waking up and seeing the Berber village after our first night in the caves was the best start to the trip. With the absolute highlight being the desert trek with the camels and spending the night under the stars - it was incredible. We could never have discovered such authentic local experiences if travelling alone. We’re already looking at where our next MBA trip will take us.

I have travelled many times

I have travelled many times to the continent of Africa, but this was my first experience of Tunisia. Once away from the busy airport and driving down into the south, Tunisia is a beautiful country. If you love hiking through beautiful and striking landscapes, culture and history then this trip has those in abundance. The night out in the desert under the stars was amazing. Our group huddled around the campfire watching our wonderful camel drivers prepare our delicious dinner- a core memory of the trip! The accommodation was a mixture of rustic, traditional and then a couple of nights in very charming guesthouses and bring your swimming costume for a swim in the pool! The group was awesome, we had a great time together.

The most perfect trip

We had the most amazing trip bouncing through Tunisia. I cannot fault a single thing. Very well organised. Our driver and guide were both cheerful and couldn’t help us enough. Nothing was too much for them. I received almost daily emails in the week approaching the start to make sure everything was ok, we didn’t have any questions and that we knew what we were doing, how and where. I can’t recommend this enough. It’s an experience I will never forget.

Fantastic exploration of southern Tunisia , with rewarding hikes , scenic views and unique accommodations. Our local host Ahmed was very gracious, thoughtful , and especially attentive to various dietary restrictions of the group 10/10.

Recommend adjusting breakfast portions as some days it was quite light, would consider bringing more snacks and protein bars

Special adventure in the south of Tunisia

We had an amazing time. The landscapes are stunning and there is a really nice variety in what you see. The accommodations are varied and all special in their own way. The cave dwellings were so memorable, the guesthouse in the oasis town of Tozeur was luxurious. The Berber villages are beautiful but the real highlight was the treck in the Sahara. The camel drivers were so attentive, and took such good care of us. The sand is so soft, almost pillowy, and cool to the touch (in October). Ahmed is a very charming, organized guide and does a good job of introducing you to the history and culture of Tunisia. He took extra care to make sure all of my meals were vegetarian. The hikes are very manageable (the biggest challenge is the oppressive heat and sun). The food is quite good, but it can be a bit light for breakfasts and lunches on some days (would recommend packing a bunch of protein bars).

The first and last days were a bit intense with the long travel, but everything in between more than made up for it. The real fun began the moment we settled into the cave for the night — it was raw, rewarding, and far beyond expectations. Every day brought a new adventure: exploring caves, hiking to the top of the peaks, visiting Berber villages, and camping in the desert under the stars.

Our lead guide, Ahmad, was very knowledgeable and clearly knew what he was doing. The driver was always smiling and ready to help, and all the local guides were friendly and informative. The group dynamic was great, and everyone got along really well. This is my second trip with MBA within just a few months. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ — an unforgettable experience all around!

Star Wars Country and the Sahara

I travelled on the first tour in December 2024, overall this was a fantastic trip but with some room for improvement.

The landscapes were really varied, unlike anything I've experienced before. It was very quiet, we saw no other people on the hikes apart from local shepherds and very few other people at the accommodation. The locals we met were friendly, the food was good and plentiful.

Now for the not as good bits - the first two nights at Douiret are fairly rustic (especially the shared bathroom facilities), however, the views and the breakfast (the best out of everywhere we stayed) more than made up for it.

The riad was amazing but we arrived so late in the day we didn't have time to fully enjoy it. Many of the group who had been sharing a room up to this date were given their own private rooms, as someone who had paid a single supplement this felt unfair, but I suppose it's a case of 'you win some, you lose some'.

The length of hikes vary from what is stated on the itinerary (all much shorter), we also completed them in a much quicker time than stated. This however did leave us with time for ourselves, I'd recommend taking a pack of cards for entertainment.

Our guide Chedi was very much 'hands-off' and was clearly not a hiker, so much more could have been gained from this trip with a more engaging guide, I see from more recent reviews another guide is mentioned so this can only be a good thing.

The local experts for each area were all excellent other than at Sidi Bouhel, the chap here was unprofessional and made one of our group feel uncomfortable.

Despite the above, I really did love this trip, I just wish I'd brought more dates and harissa home with me!

Fantastic Trip

This one will really stay with me! The tour experience was exceptional. The landscape was stunning and dramatic as we moved from place to place. The hikes were varied and unique. They were manageable, but be sure you have good boots for rocky terrain. There are some steep, sidehill sections at elevation. The Tunisian people are so friendly and welcoming. I really enjoyed the food and appreciated the effort to accommodate a vegetarian diet. Each night's lodging was really like opening a surprise package. I was amazed and never disappointed. The local guides were key in making this trip a very authentic experience. Each guide was great. I especially enjoyed our guides into the desert with the camels. They were so friendly and warm, and they sure knew how to cook in the desert conditions! Our guide Ahmed kept the whole tour well organized and was highly responsible. He didn't fail to impart his knowledge of Tunisia and his passion for his country and people. I highly recommend this tour to adventure seekers.

North Africa's shining gem

I have traveled pretty extensively in the developing world, typically looking for opportunities that get away from the usual tourist experience. There were so few guided group tours that visited southern Tunisia that I was drawn to this itinerary, and it did not disappoint. The diversity of the landscapes made for some stunning hikes, but I was most touched by the warmth and curiosity of the Tunisians with whom I interacted. Unlike some places in the world where one feels pressured to buy in a local market or face stress getting ripped off in tourist scams, I did not once feel like I was being hustled by anyone, which is a bit unique for the region. I also felt safe as a foreign woman, and able to ask questions, practice a little Tunisian dialect (a fascinating mix of Arabic and French) and get a sense of what life is like in this part of the world. If these are primary goals of your own travels, I highly recommend this experience. Guiding is strong (Ahmed is easy to talk to and will help clear up any cultural confusion) and the local guides in particular were clearly proud of their corners of the country. Huge shout out to Fatih our driver, who was really so much more than that, joining us during dinners, helping us with our luggage and generally providing support and encouragement after a long trek.

Itinerary was perfect - every day was beautiful and totally different terrain- with no really early starts which was a bonus! Ahmed & the guides shared rich historical and local insights that you wouldn't find traveling alone. My highlights were the desert trekking led by the incredible camels, staying in Raouf's gite, exploring traditional Berber lifestyle, and the food - you won't go hungry on this trip!

I chose this trip because I have never been to Tunisia and I was intrigued to discover it on foot. The highlights were: our guide Ahmed who was both knowledgeable and funny; trekking in the Sahara with the camels, eating bread made on the coals in the sand, the unimaginable sky away from light pollution; the first two nights in the “cave hotel” and hiking in the mountain and the canyon. We had a great group — I have never had a bad one with Much Better Adventures.

The only things to be mindful of: there are two long drives at the beginning and at the end which could be enervating; you don’t need water purification tablets or towels; you need to budget for tips for this trip as well as extra dinners (as listed) and the hammam experience was nice but it wasn’t the best. You might just want to relax by a nice pool with WiFi and a cup of tea.

This is an incredible trip that takes you away from classic tourist areas of Tunisia and gives you a proper insight into it's amazing landscapes and interesting culture. The walks are varied and as described but there were so many wow moments along the way. Our magical 24hrs in the Sahara is something I'll never forget! The lead guide on this trip, Ahmed, is fantastic as was our driver Fehti. Thanks to them, MBA and all the local hosts and guides we met along the way for another fabulous adventure!

Travel insurance

Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate cover for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment cover, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.

Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travelers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield, both of which offer cover for a wide range of adventurous activities.

Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 230kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

The tap water in Tunisia is not always gentle on the stomach. You may find purified water in some of the accommodation which you can use to fill up each morning, so be sure to pack a reusable water bottle or two. To avoid plastic waste where filtered water is not available, we suggest bringing water purification tablets or a different purification system for extra safety. Please read our article on water filters for more information.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.

Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
