Key Information
Day 1
¡Bienvenidos a Costa Rica!

Driving
Welcome to Costa Rica! Your guide and driver will be waiting for you at the airport in San José. From there, head to the small town of Turrialba on a scenic journey, passing coffee fields and sugar plantations. You'll check into your hotel right in the Turrialba Valley with views of the active Turrialba Volcano. In the evening, you'll meet up with your fellow adventurers and guide for dinner.
Day 2
Canyoneering among Costa Rican waterfalls

Canyoning
Today, you'll head out on a canyoneering adventure in the lush Costa Rican rainforest, where you'll rappel a series of five waterfalls. Gear up and get briefed by your expert guide before descending the smooth, mossy rocks into clear pools. At each of the waterfalls, your guides will set up the ropes for you safely, and you'll take a break for a traditional lunch prepared over a crackling wood stove. Keep your eyes peeled throughout the day for some of the diverse wildlife of the forest; sloths, vibrant birds, and chattering monkeys. Remember to pack quick-dry clothing, as you're going to get wet during canyoneering.
Day 3
Whitewater rafting on the Pacuare River

Rafting
After enjoying breakfast, head to the famous Pacuare River, known for its world-class whitewater rafting. Your experienced guide will give you a safety briefing before you launch your raft, descending the river and navigating through 4 miles of thrilling Class III rapids. Along the way, you'll stop on the riverbank to explore the lush forest and hike to secluded waterfalls. Back in the raft, you’ll continue down the river until you reach the remote eco-lodge with stunning views over the river. Kick back at your fully equipped eco-lodge, relaxing and unwinding in the heart of this tropical paradise. Welcome to the jungle!
Day 4
Zip-lining and a Tarzan swing through jungle canopy

Zip-lining
Hiking
Driving
Wake up to the soothing sounds of the rainforest from your lodge. After enjoying a breakfast of fresh fruits and local specialties, your guides will prepare you for an adrenaline-packed morning among the rainforest canopy. Harness up to cross the jungle on nine different zip-lines, including the longest on the Pacuare. Begin by ascending into the trees by ladder, before you glide from platform to platform through the dense foliage. The zip-line course is designed to offer a mix of speeds and heights, with some long, fast stretches and others being a slower, more scenic experience. The platforms are strategically placed to provide awesome views of the rainforest, rivers, and waterfalls. For the brave at heart, there's the incredible 'Tarzan Swing' – a massive 295-foot-long swing suspended above the ground. This jaw (and stomach) dropping experience will have you free-falling through the canopy and swinging back and forth over the jungle. Next, you'll head down to the eco-lodge and hike out to find your transportation waiting to take you three hours south, to the charming Caribbean town of Punta Cocles. Its beach, Playa Cocles, is picture-perfect – known as one of Costa Rica’s most beautiful stretches of sand. This mile-long stretch of shore, fringed with swaying palm trees, remains blissfully uncrowded and authentic thanks to its remote location and minimal development.
Day 5
Kayak and hike at Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge

Kayaking
Hiking
Enjoy a lazy breakfast before heading off to the picturesque Punta Uva beach – known for its soft, golden sand, crystal-clear turquoise waters, and lush, palm-fringed coastline. Get into a kayak to paddle towards and into the mouth of the nearby river. As you paddle through the calm waters, be on the lookout for sloths lazily hanging from the trees or howler monkeys hanging in the tropical foliage. After a stop for lunch, you'll set off on an afternoon hike in the Gandoca-Manzanillo National Wildlife Refuge. Home to a hugely diverse array of plant and animal life, keep an eye out for colorful toucans, agile spider monkeys, and the elusive jaguar as you hike. The refuge also protects important nesting sites for endangered sea turtles, such as the leatherback and green turtle. As you walk along the coast, enjoy breathtaking views of the Caribbean Sea and the lush, green hills that rise up behind the beach, stopping to cool off in one of the many natural pools along the way.
Day 6
Snorkel and hike through the coastal forest of Cahuita

Snorkelling
Hiking
Driving
Begin your day with a scenic boat ride through Cahuita National Park, a protected marine and land reserve with the largest system of coral reefs in Costa Rica. Once in the park, you’ll snorkel for an hour or so, observing coral formations and a wide range of colorful tropical fish. You might even encounter a harmless reef shark or a stingray. Later, you'll be dropped off at Punta to set off on a hike through the stunning coastal forest of Cahuita – eyes out for sloths, howler monkeys, capuchin monkeys, and various reptiles along the trails. Afterwards, continue your adventure with a scenic 3-4 hour drive to Sarapiquí, where you'll check into a rainforest eco-retreat. The family-run lodge is located in a private rainforest preserve along the Sarapiquí River, known for its biodiversity and its wealth of birdlife.
Day 7
Discover Costa Rican chocolate and night hike through the rainforest

Wildlife Watching
Today you'll discover the process of chocolate making at the local plantation which surrounds your lodge. You'll learn about the traditional methods of cacao cultivation and processing from the neighbors of the eco-retreat. They are both excellent naturalist guides who will share their knowledge – from the fruit in the trees, through all of the processing stages, right to the chocolate that is the end result. Relish plenty of opportunities for tasting, and get stuck in to the chocolate-making process. Later in the day as the sun sets, hike into the nocturnal world of the Costa Rican jungle. Joined by a local guide and equipped with flashlights, navigate the winding jungle paths on the lookout for glowing insects, croaking tree frogs, and – if you're lucky – elusive kinkajous. Your experienced guide will share insights into the behaviors and habitats of these nocturnal dwellers.
Day 8
Hike forest paths to hidden waterfalls

Hiking
Driving
After an early breakfast, you'll head out hiking through the scenic trails of Bajos del Toro region to discover some of Costa Rica's most secluded waterfalls. Trekking through the forest, stop off at the turquoise waters of the hidden El Tepezquintle waterfall, continuing on to Las Gemelas, two stunning twin waterfalls that flow side by side. As you continue your hike, you'll come across La Celestial and La Turquesa, and finally reaching La Pintada, renowned for the unique colors and patterns in the surrounding rocks. The highlight is the spectacular Catarata Del Toro, an 260ft+ cascade that thunders into an extinct volcanic crater. After completing the hike, head off on a scenic four-hour drive south towards the Pacific Coast and the beach town of Uvita – known for its laid-back atmosphere and excellent surfing conditions. Once you've checked into the hotel you can head out into the town to enjoy a relaxed dinner with your fellow travelers.
Day 9
Wildlife hike through Carara National Park

Hiking
Driving
You'll start the day with a three-hour drive to Carara National Park, where a 3-mile loop trail winds through vibrant rainforest. Keep your eyes peeled for tropical birds, monkeys, and native plant species as you hike. Afterwards, hit the road for a scenic two-and-a-half-hour journey south to the easy-going beach town of Uvita, tucked along the Pacific Coast. It's a favorite for its surf-friendly beaches, laid-back vibe, and close proximity to Marino Ballena National Park. After checking into your hotel, the evening is yours to relax—or head into town with your fellow adventurers for a chilled-out dinner.
Day 10
Lunch in an open-air cavern nestled behind twin waterfalls

Hiking
Canyoning
Today, you'll explore the Diamante Waterfalls, a series of ten sparkling waterfalls hidden deep in the jungle. To reach the falls, you'll begin with a couple of hours' hiking up a steep, rocky path through lush primary forest. Reach the highest point of Diamante and experience breathtaking views of the valley. Once at the waterfalls, you'll find an amazing open-air cave nestled between twin cascades. This jungle hideaway has a fully equipped kitchen, toilets, and benches behind the water face, so here you'll have lunch – a delicious vegetarian meal prepared by your guides using fresh produce from an organic garden on the property. After lunch, you'll get into safety equipment and rappel down the 82 ft Diamante Waterfall, with your guides on hand to advise on proper form and technique. Once you reach the bottom, there'll be a short hike leading to a spectacular viewpoint where you can take a dip in the large natural swimming hole. After a long day of adventure, drive back to your hotel where you can chill in the pool, or relax on the sun terrace.
Day 11
Downtime in Uvita and back to San Jose

Driving
After a few very action-packed days, you’ve certainly earned a sleep-in and a leisurely morning. Today, you have some free time to relax and explore the local town of Uvita or head to the nearby beaches to soak up the last of the tropical sun. Just a 15-minute walk from the hotel is Uvita Beach – a stunning stretch of sand known for its gentle waves and the famous whale tail-shaped sandbar that emerges during low tide. It’s an ideal spot for a relaxing swim or a peaceful stroll along the shore. Alternatively, a bit further south, Playa Ballena is part of the Ballena National Marine Park. This beach is more secluded, with clear waters and lush jungle surroundings – you might even spot some dolphins or sea turtles in the distance. In the late afternoon, meet your guide and transfer to San José, where you'll check into your hotel and head out for a farewell dinner.

What is the food like?

The food on this trip will be typically local dishes that use wholesome, fresh ingredients, emphasizing natural taste and simplicity. A cornerstone of Costa Rican meals is rice, often accompanied by beans. You'll find these in many meals – like the national dish, gallo pinto (typically enjoyed at breakfast, this is a flavorful mix of rice and black beans accompanied by eggs, tortillas, and sour cream). Another typical dish is casado (a platter of rice, beans, plantains, salad, and a choice of meat), served with picadillo (a finely chopped vegetable medley). Seafood is abundant along the coastal regions, with dishes like ceviche (fresh fish marinated in citrus juices, mixed with onions, cilantro, and peppers) available. You’ll also try traditional snacks and street foods: empanadas stuffed with cheese, meat, or beans and patacones (twice-fried green plantains served with a tangy dipping sauce). For something sweet, you can try tres leches cake, a moist sponge cake soaked in three types of milk, or cajeta de coco, a coconut fudge. You’ll find lots of fresh fruits, juices, and smoothies readily available using mango, papaya, pineapple, and bananas. Of course, Costa Rican coffee, renowned worldwide, is a must-try. The country's unique climate and rich volcanic soil provide perfect conditions for growing high-quality coffee beans. Costa Rica is also known for its exceptional chocolate, and the cacao bean has been cultivated in the country for centuries. Local chocolatiers produce a range of exquisite chocolates, from dark and rich to creamy and sweet, often with unique local flavors like tropical fruit or spices. Enjoy!
Your host has deliberately not included some lunches and evening meals in your trip as it's great fun to explore the food options in each place. Dinner (where not included) will be at local restaurants and will cost approx $15-$20 per person. Your guide will be with you to make suggestions of where to eat and when to arrange group meals.
If you have any dietary requirements, intolerances, or allergies, please check the FAQ below: ‘Can my dietary requirements be catered for on this adventure?’ for specific advice relating to this trip. The availability of foods you may get at home varies in different destinations, so please read the FAQ in full before making your booking to ensure that this trip can accommodate your dietary needs.

Costa Rica's weather varies significantly across its different regions due to its diverse geography. Despite this variability, temperatures and humidity are fairly constant year-round due to the country’s location in the tropics, north of the equator, as well as the trade winds that bring moisture from the Pacific Ocean. Coastal areas tend to be warmer, averaging between 77-93°F (25-34°C), while higher elevations, like the central highlands, have cooler temperatures ranging from 63-79°F (17-26°C). The humidity remains consistently high throughout the year, typically ranging from 60-80%. Costa Rica has two main seasons: the dry season (from December to April), and the rainy season (from May to November). During the dry season, you'll find the highest temperatures and lowest rainfall, making it an ideal time for outdoor activities. The Pacific slope and beach areas enjoy the best weather during this period, with sunny skies and minimal precipitation. From May to November, you'll encounter more frequent rain showers and higher humidity. The rainy season brings lush green landscapes and fewer tourists, which can be a great time for wildlife viewing and exploring the rainforests. The rains typically increase from May onwards, with the heaviest rainfall occurring in September and October. However, the Caribbean coast experiences more consistent rainfall throughout the year, and has brief dry spells in March-April and September-October. Due to Costa Rica's microclimates, weather forecasts are often inaccurate. The best approach is to be flexible and enjoy each day as it comes.

Take me back!
It's exactly what you sign up - an ultimate adventure through Costa Rica. Rainforests, Incredible white water rafting (personal highlight!), both the Caribbean and Pacific Coasts, waterfall rappelling and more! All accompanied by a great group to share the exhilarating activities with and support each other through them where fears were conquered.
We had a fantastic lead guide (Pablo) and support crew (Henry & Geovanny) who were constantly helpful, energetic, and quick at having back up plans due to the rainy weather that we had for the first 8 days which cancelled a couple of the activities.
The biodiversity and scenery were consistently breath-taking, seeing monkeys on nearly a daily basis alongside incredibly birds, lizards, etc. A lot of the trails we took and activities we took part in felt far away from the traditional tourist trail which makes you experience the true Costa Rica and made it all that more fun!
I couldn't recommend this trip enough if you're up for a proper adventure and want to explore a lot of the country
Mixed bag!!
There were 14 people in our group. Some people loved it and others hated it. I was right in the middle and this is what I thought.
-
Pablo - Head guide. Always made me feel safe. His English was great and he is a genuine adventure sportsman. Henry - second guide. Brought the humour, was always smiling. Giovanni - our driver was brilliant. Very safe and capable. The team went above and beyond for us. Thanks guys.
-
We were really unlucky with the weather and that did impact on some of the activities. Some of the advertised ‘hikes’ felt more like an old people’s coach trip, shuffling round yet another nature reserve. For me it was a bit boring and it felt like we had days and days of that in a row. Although the weather did stop us from doing the actual activities listed and Pablo did his best to find other things for us to do.
-
Best part for me was the white water rafting. It was so much fun. The eco lodge we rafted into and out of, was brilliant, basic accom but it was clean and comfortable with fab views.
-
The big one. In general I thought the accommodation was poor. I thought MBA’s USP was that you could travel like a backpacker but with a bit of luxury. There was very little luxury here. The accommodation was an average of £60 per room, per night and when you’re sharing, you’ve paid (between you for the holiday) £500 per night to be there and your accommodation is costing the company £60 per night, then I think that’s poor. I know the activities and driver etc all play a part in the cost but come on…. I think it could have been a lot better.
-
The hot springs are man made but still enjoyed it.
-
I met some great people and overall, I had a good time. MBA couldn’t do anything about the weather but you can step up the accommodation!!! Come on guys. 💪🤣

Unforgettable adventure
An Unforgettable holiday for anyone who loves adventures, outdoor activities and nature. We began in lush rainforest (a whole lot of rain!) and ended on the sunny Pacific. Highlights for me included rafting down the Pacuare River, and through jungle off the usual tourist routes to canyon down beautiful waterfall. Trip was made all the more memorable by our 2 outstanding guides Pablo and Henry who were equal parts knowledgeable, enthusiastic and fun Would recommend to anyone who wants to experience a true Costa Rican adventure
Incredible Adventure
Words cannot describe how thrilling and amazing this journey through Costa Rica was, with incredible and exhilarting activities through beuatiful Jungles and beaches and a fun group that made you feel like a true adventurer!
The trip was also hightened by our outstanding guides Pablo & Henry and our fantastic driver Giovanny that were passionate, accomadating and able to efficently deal with any problems thrown at them, whether it be change of plans due to weather or answering any concerns we had
You also get to expirence Costa Rica away from tourists making it feel like you get to experience the real Costa Rica in a way not many other could say they have done.
Overall if you want a trip that gives you a real active adventure and puts you out of your comfort zone I couldn't recommned this trip enough!

An Unforgettable Costa Rica Adventure
This Costa Rica trip was truly one to remember. Every day was packed with fun, exhilarating activities, set against some absolutely breathtaking scenery – from lush jungle to stunning coastlines, it felt like we were constantly surrounded by postcard views.
Pablo, Henry and Geovanny were honestly the best guides and drivers we could have hoped for. Pablo was incredibly knowledgeable, caring and always made sure everyone felt comfortable and safe. Henry was the perfect right-hand man – supportive, efficient and always there when you needed him.
Even when the weather got in the way of our original plans, these guys were absolute rock stars at finding great alternatives and turning every situation into another amazing experience.
I couldn’t have asked for a better team to discover Costa Rica with. Highly recommended!
It was raining
The trip was not as good as it could have been.
Most of the hotels were extremely budget and felt tired. Many were located very close to main roads, so traffic noise was an issue. The only truly enjoyable accommodation was the off-the-grid lodge in the rainforest, which felt peaceful and authentic.
The itinerary itself felt weak, with many long hours spent on the bus. Several hikes were shortened or replaced due to the weather conditions. Unfortunately, we experienced continuous heavy rain for 9 out of 11 days.
Overall, it felt like I missed the opportunity to experience the real Costa Rica.
Minibus travels that weren’t very adventurous
Firstly the trip description does not describe the experience. It is certainly not the amazing much better adventure that we bought. We were aware the trip had been downgraded too far into our travel plans to change things. The trip was a lot of road travel, little strolls and terrible accommodation. The lodge was amazing - and zip lining fantastic setup. The rafting stopped at end of grade 3 route. Met fellow travellers that continued through the grade 4 which would have been epic. Hikes were little walks . Our guide was very vague and so we never knew what / when / where we were doing. Food was often service station buffets. The accommodation was cheap nasty motels where we had to choose from limited set menu because some deal had been made. The last day was a fantastic hike up to abseil down to a cave. Unfortunately some of our group were so disheartened they opted to chill out and skip the last ‘adventure ‘. Had they been told they could have gone whale watching they would have spent the day doing that - just the suggestion would have been nice. The group we were with were fantastic fun . The cost of total accommodation was calculated - makes us question what value we had. This is my 5th trip. We cannot praise our Equador and chile experience enough.
Didn't deliver expectations
This was our fifth MBA, but unfortunately it lacked the "MB" part and was just an adventure. If this was my first MBA trip I would not have had a second.

Stunning Costa Rica, but not the experience advertised
Costa Rica is stunning, but this trip was very mixed. A few standout highlights (the Pacuare rafting, eco lodge stay, and zip-lining were excellent), but much of the itinerary was misleading. Many “hikes” were actually very short, flat strolls, snorkelling was basic and self-guided, and several activities were far less active than advertised.
Accommodation quality was extremely inconsistent, with some genuinely poor rooms and cleanliness issues. Transfers were long, winding, and frequent and so several days felt dominated by travel rather than adventure.
Our guide struggled with group management and communication where what to bring, length of walk, meet up locations changed all the time. What definitely saved the trip was the great group of people on the trip.
If only the Costa Rica in 7 days was available when we did the trip, I feel like that would’ve been much better as it cuts out much of the dull days and transfers.

Wildlife, weather and fun out on the water
What an epic trip! We went for our honeymoon and it far exceeded anything we imagined. The wildlife was colourful and everywhere, the landscape and weather were dramatic and beautiful, and our group was really enthusiastic and fun to be a part of. We made some amazing memories with lovely people that we won’t forget in a hurry. It’s not for the faint-hearted or those who want to sit on a beach for a week, it’s active, often rainy and full-on, but if you like nature, hiking and getting off the tourist trail, this is the tour to go on. It may also help if you like rice and beans… We loved it and if we can make it back, we will! Shoutout to Henry and Michael for being above-and-beyond guides. Pura vida 🤙
Most likely the best holiday I've ever been on.
Pros
High quality guide (Pablo). Very experienced, friendly, great sense of humour, organised, professional. Unreal activities!!! Highlights were kayaking up the creek, spotting toucans, sloths, howler monkeys, etc. The night walk with Willy looking for other nocturnal animals; getting amazing photos! The ziplining and Tarzan swing were also very unique and fun! The chocolate plantation tour was fascinating; again, had an unreal guide! Very welcoming guides. Having lunch at Michael's house was beautiful, and we were fortunate to briefly see Pablo's ecolodge. I appreciated the opportunity to see, and be welcomed into, a normal house in Costa Rica. The food was very yum and very healthy! The guide suggested some really great restaurants and cafes which served local cuisine. Scenery / locations / animals. Beautiful waterfalls, beaches, landscapes; beautiful animals. All were really easy to access. Accomm Pacuare Outdoor Centre is the best accommodation I have ever stayed at! Thank you for bringing that experience into my life haha!! Honourable mentions to Villas Del Caribe, and Turrialtico Lodge
Cons
Two big driving days towards the end of the tour. La Fortuna to Uvita; then Uvita to San Jose. The Adventure Inn at San Jose.
Private family group
We had such a wonderful experience with Pedro and his team - this was booked as a family holiday for my son’s 40th birthday. Unfortunately I slipped of a wet rock crossing the river on day 1 and ended up badly spraining my ankle which meant I couldn’t participate in the activities. My kids thoroughly enjoyed the activities though and the Pedro and his team took great care of me. Thank you.
My friend and I had
My friend and I had such a fun time. Some activities were challenging, some were fairly chill, but our guide Michael kept us safe and pretty much on time while still being flexible with some activities and schedules. And he always did so with a smile and good humor
Really fun activities, but mostly downtime
The activities were great! Though, there is too much driving. So many hours on the bus on this 11-day tour. There is also too much down time, where there is not much to do. We could have done more activities in some days and shortened the trip, that would be more fun an efficient. Sarapiqui stay was not worth it; it was 2 nights and we barely did anything. Guides were amazing though, very lovely people
Thanks for taking the time to share your feedback about your recent Costa Rica adventure, Bilal. We're really pleased you enjoyed the activities and appreciated the local guides. We're sorry to hear the itinerary didn't feel as fulfilling as you'd hoped. It’s designed to cover a wide range of regions, so travel time between destinations is part of the experience and the Ultimate programs we try and factor in a little more down time. That said, we’ve recently launched week-long Costa Rican adventure— a faster-paced version that might have been a better fit.
Best wishes,
- The MBA Team
Amazing adventures
If you are looking to challenge yourself with a huge swing, ziplines, white water rafting, snorkelling, rappelling and some challenging hikes this is the trip for you. Costa Rica is beautiful and this trip takes you off grid to see the natural beauty. The guides are wonderful, their local knowledge of culture, the experiences, the wildlife and the food is exceptional. A shout out to Giovanni who was our bus driver - we were lucky to have you and to Abel who was guiding us from the river rafting onwards for the first time, you were a pro! Michael is a local and has exceptional knowledge. He strives to keep you safe but give you the opportunities to experience everything you possibly can. It was my first trip with MBA and I would highly recommend and travel through them again.

Costa Rica what a ride!
From white water rafting to zipping through the canopy and from mountain hikes to snorkeling off the coast this adventure has everything. We loved it! The guides Henry and Michael were excellent and we had a great group of like-minded people to share our trip with. It did rain a lot but this didn't dampen our spirits, it is a rainforest after all, bring plenty of dry bags. The accommodation, especially the eco lodges, which were in the heart of the forest are great. I can't recommend this trip highly enough. . . and yes we saw Sloths!

A great trip!
You got to see a lot of animals, some lovely hotels and cover off 7/8 provinces in Costa Rica so a real way to experience the country. The activities are very good and you are well looked after.
The trip was much easier than I expected, all in a bus and in hotels. You can use a hard case and a lot of quick dry clothing. You don’t need a lot else. It’s very comfortable so not as adventurous as I would like it.
But would absolutely recommend people do if you don’t want more crazy adventures.

Action packed adventure in Costa Rica
My second trip with MBA didn't disappoint. It was incredible to be able to visit 6 of the 7 regions of Costa Rica with Adventures at every turn. I loved bouncing from Rainforest to coast and back again, all of the adventurous activities, being led by knowledgable and fun local guides and ofcourse our amazing group of fellow adventurers. My personal highlights were canyoning, white water rafting and the high ropes / zipline activities and learning about local culture and customs from our guides.
Ultimate Costa Rica
What a fabulous trip amazing from start to finish. Organisation an communication with Fraser prior to trip very efficient, prompt replies to any queries and any change of plans arranged with attention to detail. Our guide Henry was amazing, enthusiastic, courteous, respectful and funny, keeping us fully informed throughout. He made sure we were happy and comfortable with all activities Any group getting Henry as their guide will be well looked after. Safety was paramount as with all the guides during activities. Everyone was polite and more than helpfulduring our trip Definitely a wow factor for the jungle accommodation. Long drive for final day's activity was well worth it. This is my 3rd trip with MBA, and definitely the best, nothing bad to say 😁😁😁

Amazing Costa Rica, we got it!
What an amazing time had by all! Made great new friends. Supported through entire trip. Henry and team were fantastic, spotting so many animals, insects and reptiles on our jungle hikes. Keeping us safe (and giggling) Canyoning, white water, zip lining, paddling and snorkeling saw way more than expected. Hikes were challenging in the heat but team got me through, very proud. Food was delicious. Each accomodation bringing different dynamic, eco lodges being my fav. Overall felt thoroughly spoiled, loved Costa Rica and met amazing people. Definitely recommend!

Amazing trip
This was such a fun, adventure-packed two week trip through Costa Rica. We saw 6 of the 7 provinces and experienced new activities each day. From canyoning to white water rafting and everything in between, there was never a dull moment. Our guide Henry in particular made this trip incredible for all of us. For a brand new itinerary, it was seamlessly organized. I can’t wait to come back to explore what more CR has to offer.

Tips
Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion but there is an expectation to tip for good service. We recommend budgeting approximately:
- $8-10 USD per person, per day for the trip leader
- $6-8 USD for support staff
Of course, you are free to tip more or less, and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality – a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.
Travel insurance
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate cover for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment cover, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.
Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travelers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield, both of which offer cover for a wide range of adventurous activities.
Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.
Visas
Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 169kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
In Costa Rica, tap water quality varies depending on the region. In many tourist areas and larger cities like San José, the tap water is generally safe to drink; however, in more remote areas it's advisable to stick to filtered water as a precaution. There will be drinking water available at each night's accommodation, and your host will carry refill water where possible as well. Remember to bring a reusable water bottle (1-2 liters) to carry with you during activities as this will help reduce waste from single-use plastic bottles.
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and accommodation, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully before your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
BACKGROUND
Costa Rican, or Tico, cuisine is shaped by tropical farming, coastal access, and a history of small-scale agriculture, resulting in simple, filling meals built around rice, beans, plantains, seasonal fruit, and modest portions of meat or fish, often eaten as set plates or hearty soups.
SPECIAL DIETS
Vegetarian -Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Vegetarian travelers generally find options based on rice, beans, and vegetables.
Vegan -Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance.
Kosher -Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and usually cannot be guaranteed unless expressly confirmed in advance by your host. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. The Host is unable to guarantee a separate, certified cooking/preparation area or the use of certified kosher products. They can, however, provide meals that exclude non-Kosher ingredients (such as pork and shellfish) and avoid mixing meat and dairy. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.
Halal -Certified Halal supply varies by location and may not always be possible. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.
INTOLERANCES
Gluten Free (for Celiac, please see Allergies section below) -Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Gluten-free diets and allergies can be more challenging due to wheat-based breads, fried snacks, and shared cooking oil, especially in rural areas, so it helps to plan ahead.
Lactose Free -Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Many traditional dishes are naturally lactose-free or can easily be prepared without dairy, such as grilled meats, rice, and vegetable dishes though eggs are common.
ALLERGIES Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life-threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our Customer Experience team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip.
This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.
Your host will provide sit-on-top kayaks, which are great for both beginners and experienced paddlers. These kayaks are lightweight, stable, and easy to maneuver. Before you set off, your guide will give you all the necessary info to use the kayaks safely.
Overtourism is increasingly affecting popular locations like Costa Rica, making it challenging to enjoy its natural wonders peacefully. The high influx of visitors can strain local resources, degrade the environment and raise costs for residents. To avoid contributing to these issues, we have deliberately chosen not to include some of Costa Rica's more well-known and heavily visited spots (such as Manuel Antonio National Park and Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve). Instead, we opt for lesser-known but equally breathtaking locations like Turrialba, the Pacuare River, Punta Cocles, Sarapiquí, Del Toro Waterfalls, Cahuita National Park, Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge and Uvita.
These areas offer stunning natural beauty and often emphasize conservation. For instance, the Pacuare River is within a protected forest reserve managed by local indigenous communities, who enforce visitor limits and sustainable practices to preserve the rainforest ecosystem. In Sarapiquí, several private nature reserves, such as La Selva Biological Station, restrict access and prioritize conservation, supporting both research and small-scale ecotourism. In Uvita, Marino Ballena National Park has regulations to prevent overcrowding on whale-watching tours, allowing for ethical observation of marine life. This way, you’ll experience Costa Rica’s incredible biodiversity and landscapes through a more sustainable approach to travel, benefiting the country’s residents, visitors and precious natural environment.
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).
If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.
For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
