Itinerary
Day 1
To Finale Ligure, a quiet corner of the Italian Riviera
HotelTwin shareDinner includedShow Day 1 detailHide detail
Meet your guide at Milano Centrale train station, then transfer by train as a group to Finale Ligure, an enchanting small coastal town nestled along the quieter, western side of the Italian Riviera. Overlooking the blue Ligurian Sea and surrounded by limestone mountains, towering cliffs and colorful hamlets, it's considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy – but despite this, Finale remains relatively unknown to international tourists. As a result, it feels far more authentic and is much less crowded than the neighboring Cinque Terre (located on the Eastern Riviera). After checking in to your lovely family-run hotel, head out for a wander among the ancient houses and porticoes, or along the picturesque seafront. Dinner tonight will be in a typical restaurant in the historic town center, where you'll be introduced to the tasty, fresh regional cuisine. Buon appetito!
Day 2
The villages trail: from Borgio Verezzi to Finalborgo
Hiking3hrs · 6mi · 984ft up · 984ft downHotelTwin shareBreakfast and dinner includedShow Day 2 detailHide detail
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel then hop on a train for the brief ride to Borgio, the starting point of today's relatively short but rewarding hike. Make your way uphill via ancient mule tracks to reach the hillside village of Verezzi, which has a beautiful panorama opening out over the gulf and views that reach as far as the French Riviera, on a clear day. Next, descend into the maritime oak forest that lines the seashore and into Finalborgo, an ancient fortified town with beautiful frescoed buildings and traditional cafes. Here, you can enjoy a late lunch or perhaps some Italian gelato. You're free to walk back to your hotel down on the marina whenever you wish – there's time to grab a cool swim, if you fancy it. Late afternoon, you'll enjoy a wine-tasting experience, followed by a pizza night with your group.
Day 3
Mediterranean coastal views along the Pilgrim's Path
Hiking4-5hrs · 7mi · 2133ft up · 2133ft downHotelTwin shareBreakfast and dinner includedShow Day 3 detailHide detail
This morning you'll hop on the local bus for a short ride to Varigotti, the starting point of the beautiful Pilgrim's Path. Climb gently through a centuries-old olive grove and the surrounding Mediterranean scrub, reaching a stunning viewpoint overlooking the stunning blue Saracens Bay below. Next, continue to the impressive site of Grotta dei Briganti (Bandits Cove), a natural hole carved into the imposing cliff resembling an open window over the Mediterranean. Follow a shady path that weaves through maritime pine forest—punctuated by more stunning viewpoints—until you reach Noli, one of the best-preserved medieval villages in all of Liguria. In the afternoon, climb up the hillsides above the promontory for more grand views and a picnic along the trail, then descend back to sea level for an optional swim. Later, transfer by bus back to Finale Ligure (about a 20-minute journey) where you can enjoy dinner out in town with your fellow travelers.
Day 4
Cliffs, Roman bridges and authentic pesto in the Ponci Valley
Hiking4hs · 8mi · 1312ft up · 1312ft downHotelTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
Enjoy breakfast then set off on foot directly from the hotel, following ancient mule tracks historically used to transport raw materials and products from mountain villages to the sea. Your destination today is the splendid Ponci Valley, which is crossed by an ancient Roman road and home to caves dating back to prehistoric times, rocky pinnacles, and old peasant villages that are still inhabited. You'll stop for lunch at a local farm offering an authentic, farm-to-table gastronomic experience. You'll also have a workshop to learn how to make pesto, the quintessential Ligurian dish famous throughout the world. Back in Finale Ligure, the evening is yours to explore the town as you wish.
Day 5
Step back into Roman times along the Via Julia Augusta
Hiking5hrs · 11mi · 1969ft up · 1969ft downHotelTwin shareBreakfast and dinner includedShow Day 5 detailHide detail
Your final hike will start from Albenga, which you'll reach via a short train ride. Start by ascending to the top of Monte Brignone (1,706 ft) surrounded by the Mediterranean shrubland, with beautiful views of the coastal towns and surrounding mountains. Enjoy a break for lunch and follow the ancient Via Julia Augusta back to Albenga. This original Roman road follows the coastline, passing by a Roman amphitheater and the remains of a necropolis dating back to the first century. The intense blue of the sea will be in sight along the route, and you can look out for the island of Gallinara; these postcard-worthy views make the perfect end to your Italian hiking adventure. Tonight, you'll toast the end of your trip over a traditional Ligurian meal in town. Buon appetito!
Day 6
Arrivederci Italia!

After breakfast, you'll transfer back to Milano Centrale station by train, usually arriving early afternoon. If you don't feel like leaving just yet, you can choose to extend your trip with a few days in the nearby Cinque Terre area, easily reachable by train.

FAQs
Who at Much Better Adventures designed this trip?
Marta Marinelli, raised in Italy’s serene Prosecco Hills, dreamed of global adventures, inspired by her father's travel stories. Her passion evolved into a career, backed by a decade of studies including degrees in international tourism and destination management. She’s worked in the adventure travel sector since 2012, living in Italy, the UK, and now sunny Portugal.
Over twenty years, Marta has explored over 60 countries, visiting remote areas like Ghana, Rwanda, Sao Tome and Principe, Haiti and Nepal’s Upper Mustang region. As a Senior Adventure Expansion Manager at Much Better Adventures, she focuses on creating life-changing experiences, ranging from multi-activity adventures and challenging treks to ultimate adventures in iconic places. She loves the challenge of finding the best local adventure hosts around the world, collaborating on adventures that offer genuine immersion, pushing beyond the beaten path and working on exclusive itineraries that challenge your comfort zone.
What makes her tick? Enabling people to live adventure-rich lives while positively impacting and empowering local communities around the world, generating sustainable opportunities for both the host, guides, community and the environment.
Isn't the Italian Riviera affected by over-tourism?
Overtourism is a growing phenomenon and one of the places in Europe where this is problematic is in the Cinque Terre, on Italy’s Eastern Ligurian coast. More than 2.5 million people visit this coastal area of Italy every year, attracted by the five famous, colorful, tiny villages and sublime coastal views. The majority are day-trippers or visit as part of a cruise excursion. The impact on the local communities is huge, creating issues such as overcrowding in the narrow streets and on local transport. Even traveling in the lower season or along the hiking trails doesn't provide much of an escape.
To avoid contributing to the issue, we've decided not to include the Cinque Terre area in our trip. Instead, you'll be based in a lesser-known but equally stunning part of the Italian Riviera, in the west. Despite being considered one of the most beautiful villages in Italy, Finale Ligure remains relatively unknown to foreign tourists and feels far more authentic and less crowded than the neighboring Cinque Terre (located on the Eastern Riviera). While it's impossible to guarantee a completely crowd-free experience, it's less likely you'll encounter as many hikers and tourists than in the Cinque Terre area. You'll be visiting lesser-known charming small villages, and will enjoy a more authentic experience and immersion in Italian culture.
What if things don't go as planned?
Overall, weather conditions should be pretty favorable in the months when this trip is scheduled to run, with plenty of sunshine and mild temperatures ranging from 61-82°F on average. However, as always, Mother Nature is unpredictable so the best you can do is to be prepared for anything and come equipped with sunscreen, a hat and waterproofs. Your host will be monitoring the weather conditions during the course of the trip and may suggest alternative, safer routes or activities should the weather get particularly bad, or change the order and timings of the hikes. During the months of March, April and November you should expect some cooler temperatures, especially in the evenings, so it's important to come prepared with layers.
What should I do about drinking water?
The local tap water is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottle to fill up at the hotels, public fountains, and at restaurants to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Who is running the trip?
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
What is the official travel advice?
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).
If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.
For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
Why are your adventures only for adults?
All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.
Who else will be on my trip?
You're always in good company on one of our adventures.
Our trips typically consist of a mix of solo travelers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.
Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves, and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.

What's the weather like?
The Italian Riviera is well known for its mild climate year-round, mainly due to the favorable location within the Gulf Stream and mountainous regions. With 300 sunny days per year, it is one of the sunniest regions in Italy, making it a suitable hiking destination even in the shoulder season between March-April and October-November. The months between May and September have overall less chance of rain and much warmer temperatures. October can be equally pleasant with people still swimming in the seas on a warm day. Of course, adverse wind, sea, or rain conditions can be unpredictable with some disruptions possible at any time of the year. The best you can do is to be prepared for anything and come equipped with layers of clothing, sunscreen, and waterproofs.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 190kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
