Itinerary
Day 1
Welcome to Matera, the city of stone!
HotelTwin shareDinner includedShow Day 1 detailHide detail
Your adventure starts in the breathtaking city of Matera, nestled in the region of Basilicata in southern Italy. You are free to arrive at any time today, as Matera is easily accessible via frequent public bus services from Bari Airport. Matera is one of the most extraordinary locations in Italy with its ancient troglodyte settlements, known as the Sassi, carved from limestone and perched on the edge of a deep ravine. Habitation of the Sassi cave dwellings dates back to the Paleolithic era, though the district fell into neglect up until the 1970s. Substantial restorations in recent decades have transformed the town into a vibrant hub of great cultural significance, now recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the late afternoon, meet your guide and fellow travelers for a short stroll through the maze of narrow alleys, cave dwellings, and rock-hewn churches that form Matera’s enchanting old town. As the sun sets, savor a drink with a view as the Sassi come aglow, then indulge in a welcome dinner at a local restaurant, where you'll be introduced to the fresh, flavorful cuisine of the region. Buon appetito!
Day 2
Bike to San Giuliano and visit a focaccia bakery

This morning, leave the hustle of Matera behind and embark on an e-bike adventure through rolling hills. You’ll ride along the peaceful, deserted country lanes which connect Matera to San Giuliano Lake, a tranquil natural oasis and a haven for migratory birds. Along the route, you’ll stop to explore the fascinating Crypt of the Original Sin, a cave on the Murgia plateau often referred to as the 'Sistine Chapel of rock art' due to its stunning frescoes. Lunch will be a delicious affair at a local agriturismo, where you'll savor authentic regional flavors before biking back to Matera. Later in the day, join your guide to visit a local baker to try some of Matera’s famous bread, enjoying a mouthwatering taste of freshly baked focaccia. Dinner is not included this evening, but your guide will recommend some of the best restaurants in town so you can choose an unforgettable meal.
Day 3
Hike the Murgia Materana and head to Ostuni
Hiking3hrs · 6mi · 951ft up · 853ft downDriving2hrsAgriturismoTwin shareBreakfast and dinner includedShow Day 3 detailHide detail
Lace up your boots for a hike through Matera's Natural Park of the Rock Churches, part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1993. Marvel at the dramatic ravine, explore ancient caves and historic churches, and take in the spectacular views of Matera from its scenic trails, before the hike culminates in a crossing of the canyon via a suspension bridge. Afterwards, grab some lunch in town before heading into Puglia, the 'heel' of Italy, driving towards the coastal town of Polignano a Mare which is perched strikingly on cliffs above the Adriatic. Spend a couple of hours here, perhaps exploring its labyrinthine old town, visiting panoramic terraces, savoring an icy gelato or taking a dip in the crystal-clear waters at Polignano's beach. By late afternoon, you’ll reach countryside around Ostuni. For the next three nights you'll be staying at a traditional masseria – a beautifully restored agricultural estate typical of Puglia. Surrounded by ancient olive trees, vineyards, and lush vegetable gardens, it's a tranquil spot to kick back in. Cap off the day by sampling some of Puglia's finest olive oil, produced on the masseria itself.
Day 4
Hike ancient olive groves in Ostuni
Hiking4-5hrs · 8mi · 1050ft up · 951ft downAgriturismoTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
Savor today with a hike in the hills surrounding Ostuni, which offers sweeping views over vast olive groves – home to some of the oldest and most majestic olive trees in the world. The trail will lead you through the serene countryside, crossing paths lined with dry-stone walls, olive groves, almond trees and vineyards. Reaching the beautiful medieval town of Ostuni, an enchanting white citadel perched on a hilltop with a labyrinth of small intersecting streets made for exploring on foot. After some free time to explore the town you will transfer back to the masseria, where you can unwind with some well-deserved time by the pool before getting stuck in to an orecchiette-making demonstration, where you'll learn the secrets behind this beloved Apulian pasta, followed by a delicious home-cooked dinner.
Day 5
E-bike to the iconic trulli of Alberobello

On your last full day, get back on e-bikes to pedal through the stunning countryside of the Itria Valley, renowned for its trulli houses – the unique, cone-shaped dwellings that are iconic in this region. You'll cycle from the charming baroque town of Martina Franca through the picturesque village of Locorotondo, following a scenic cycling path that winds through the countryside alongside an old aqueduct. Continue on to Alberobello, where you'll find over a thousand of these distinctive trulli. Take a brief stop in the quieter Rione Aia Piccola neighborhood, where you should be able capture some photos without the big crowds. From there, pedal along scenic country lanes to a traditional rural farm, where you'll stop for lunch. A local cheese artisan will showcase the craft of making fresh cheese, before you continue your ride back to Martina Franca. Later in the afternoon back in Ostuni, to celebrate the end of this incredible foodie adventure, gather for a wine-tasting session, sampling some of the finest Apulian wines and raising a toast to your adventure. Dinner is not included this evening, but your guide will take you to a renowned restaurant where you can select your favorite dishes from an à la carte menu.

This trip begins in Matera, so you'll need to make your own way there from the airport – see the 'Getting There' section for more information.
One lunch and two dinners are not included in the cost of this trip. This is to allow you a wider choice of meals and so that you can explore local restaurants. We recommend you budget about €80 in total to cover these meals (excluding drinks).
Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion but there is an expectation to tip for good service. Your guide will help with advice, however we suggest the below as a guideline per person:
- €30 for the main guide
- €5 for the support cycling guide (Day 2 and Day 4)
- €10 for the driver
Of course, you are free to tip more or less, and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality – a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.
You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping and laundry.
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate cover for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment cover, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.
Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travelers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (opens in new tab) (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield (opens in new tab), both of which offer cover for a wide range of adventurous activities.
Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.
Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

FAQs
Aren't Puglia and Matera very touristy?
This trip is designed to showcase some of the best spots in Puglia and Basilicata, offering a perfect balance of sightseeing, culinary experiences and active adventure. While the region has gained popularity in recent years, it remains less crowded than places like the Cinque Terre or the Amalfi Coast – especially if you visit during the low season (March, October, or November). Although it's hard to guarantee a completely crowd-free experience in towns like Matera, Polignano, and Alberobello, these locations are still must-sees of the region and fully merit their inclusion in the itinerary.
To make the most of your journey, we've crafted an itinerary that minimizes time spent in busier areas, allowing you to bike along peaceful country roads, away from the urban bustle. You'll have the chance to immerse yourself in the serene countryside with three overnight stays in an authentic masseria. In addition, you'll discover hidden gems like Locorotondo, Martina Franca, and the stunning natural oasis of San Giuliano Lake.
What if things don't go as planned?
If bad weather affects any of the activities, your local guide may decide to swap around the order of the program. If biking or hiking is not possible due to safety reasons, alternative activities will be offered.
How many guides and support crew will there be on my trip?
A certified, English-speaking local guide will be with the group throughout the trip and will join all activities. In addition, for groups of nine or more people, you'll have an additional biking guide to support you during the e-bike rides on Day 2 and Day 4.

What do I need to know about e-bikes?
Your e-bike will assist with about 25% of the effort on an average ride, meaning you'll provide about 75% of the effort. There will be moments when you'll need to switch to Boost mode for short bursts of power, especially on challenging terrain or steep sections. However, most of your ride will be in Eco and Trail modes, with Eco mode often being your go-to on climbs to conserve battery life throughout the day. This balance ensures a smooth, enjoyable ride while still giving you the thrill of exploration on two wheels.
In terms of speed, the power assistance on e-bikes is typically capped at around 15mph. If you want to go faster, you'll need to pedal harder! You can adjust the power levels to match your pace and terrain. Your cycling guide will brief you on how to use the different modes to optimize your ride and make the battery last:
Eco Mode: Low power for energy efficiency, giving you longer battery life on flat terrain.
Auto Mode: Automatically adjusts the power based on terrain and your pedaling effort for a more balanced ride.
Sport Mode: Provides mid-range power, ideal for moderate hills and faster cruising.
Turbo Mode: Delivers maximum power, perfect for steep hills or when you want to ride fast.
When it comes to battery power, the e-bike batteries are typically charged overnight, usually at your accommodation. There will be a couple of spare batteries in the support vehicle just in case. However, if you manage your battery usage throughout the day (for example, by avoiding using turbo mode all the time), you’ll find that the battery lasts long enough for most rides without any issues.
What should I do about drinking water?
The tap water is safe to drink. Please bring your own reusable water bottle to fill up at the hotels or public fountains to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Who is running the trip?
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
What is the official travel advice?
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).
If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.
For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
Why are your adventures only for adults?
All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.
Who else will be on my trip?
You're always in good company on one of our adventures.
Our trips typically consist of a mix of solo travelers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.
Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves, and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.
It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.
Don't just take our word for it:
- 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
- 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
- 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends

What's the weather like?
Puglia (also known as Apulia) and Basilicata are located in the south of Italy and are some of the driest, sunniest regions of Italy. The best time for hiking, biking, and exploring is usually spring (from March to June) and fall (from September to early November), when temperatures are milder and usually range from around 59°F to the high 80°F. Some rain and chilly evenings are possible at any time of year, so the best you can do is to come prepared for varied weather conditions and bring some layers and rainproof gear.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 174kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
