Touch down in Madeira and unwind with your first yoga session
Yoga1hrHotelTwin shareDinner includedShow Day 1 detailHide detail
Arrive in Madeira and settle in for the short set group transfer from Funchal to your lodging, Sentido Galosol, a comfortable 4-star property situated right on the ocean on Madeira’s South Coast. After checking in, enjoy some free time – perhaps explore the local town of Caniço and nearby viewpoints such as Miradouro do Cristo Rei and the Ponta Da Oliveira, or simply relax by the hotel's pool. Late afternoon, you'll unwind with your first yoga session in a peaceful indoor space, helping you stretch and relax after your journey. Later, meet your guide for a trip briefing and group dinner, where you'll get to know your fellow travelers.
Day 2
Hike the Levada do Norte and explore a tropical plantation

This morning, you'll join another yoga session, the perfect way to start your day with some gentle stretching and deep breathing. After breakfast you'll be driven to Serra d’Água, a lush valley known for its dramatic mountain backdrop and terraced vineyards. From here, begin your hike along the Levada do Norte, one of Madeira’s oldest and most important irrigation channels. As you climb from Fajã da Ribeira, enjoy sweeping views over the Ribeira Brava Valley and the island’s rolling green hills. Along the way, learn how these ancient waterways have shaped Madeira’s agriculture and provided essential irrigation for the island’s farmlands. The route winds through forests, small villages, and rugged cliffs before ending in Boa Morte, a peaceful rural hamlet. After the hike, transfer to Fajã dos Padres, a hidden coastal paradise accessible only by cable car or boat. Descend a stunning 984ft cliffside by cable car, revealing a secluded retreat with a lush organic farm, volcanic pebble beach, and crystal-clear waters. Stroll through the farm’s mango, banana trees then, weather permitting, there’s also time to swim in the Atlantic waters, an ideal way to cool off after the morning’s trek. Late afternoon, return to Galosol for some relaxation and perhaps enjoy the hotel’s spa facilities before enjoying a free evening to dine at the hotel or a nearby restaurant.
Day 3
Hike to the authentic coastal community of Paul do Mar
Yoga1hrHiking4-5hrs · 6mi · 656ft up · 2625ft downDriving1.5hrsHotelTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 3 detailHide detail
After your morning yoga session, transfer to the quiet village of Raposeira on the sunny slopes above Madeira’s southwest coast. From here, set off along old farming paths that thread through terraces, smallholdings, and scattered houses, where life still moves to an agricultural rhythm. As you hike towards Maloeira, the landscape opens out to Atlantic views and the steep cliffs that shape this side of the island. You’ll then join a section of Levada Nova, one of Madeira’s historic irrigation channels, built to carry water from the wetter north to the drier farmland of the south. Leaving the levada behind, descend on sections of an old caminho real – one of the royal paths that linked isolated villages before roads reached the island. The trail heads steadily downhill along stone steps and ancient tracks once used by generations of farmers and fishermen traveling between the highlands and the coast. At sea level, you’ll arrive in Paul do Mar, one of Madeira’s most authentic coastal communities, once known for its tuna fishing fleets and strong maritime traditions. If sea conditions allow, finish the hike with a swim near the harbor, where a small sheltered beach beside the old fishermen’s quarter forms a natural pool, before transferring back to your base.
Day 4
Hike the Laurisilva forest and enjoy a wine tasting
Yoga1hrHiking4-5hrs · 7mi · 328ft up · 328ft downDriving2.5hrsHotelTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
Start your morning with a yoga session, helping you ease into the day before setting off on an incredible hike along the PR18 following the Levada do Rei. Along the way, spot endemic plants, hear the calls of native birdlife, and pass hidden streams that add to the forest’s tranquil atmosphere. After the hike, reward yourself with a wine-tasting experience at Quinta do Barbusano, a small, family-run vineyard. Learn about Madeira’s winemaking traditions and sample a selection of locally produced wines while taking in stunning mountain vistas over the São Vicente valley. Later in the afternoon, transfer back to your hotel and enjoy some free time to unwind – take a swim, explore the coastline, or simply relax. Dinner is not included tonight, so you can either dine at the hotel or head out with your group to a nearby local restaurant.
Day 5
Summit Pico Ruivo (6,109 ft) and hike to Santana

After your final morning yoga session, enjoy a scenic transfer to Achada do Teixeira – the gateway to Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest peak at 6,109ft. From here, embark on the hike to the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with sweeping panoramic views of the island’s rugged landscape, dramatic cliffs, and the sparkling Atlantic Ocean in the distance. Take in the breathtaking scenery as you stand at the top of the island and once you’ve soaked in the views, descend into the lush Laurisilva Forest along the Levada do Caldeirão Verde trail. This levada path meanders through the heart of the forest, offering a serene walk through tunnels, over bridges, and past vibrant greenery. Your hike culminates in the picturesque village of Santana, known for its unique triangular houses and beautiful rural landscapes. Explore the village at your own pace before transferring back to your lodging. Conclude the day with a farewell dinner in a great local restaurant, where you will celebrate the incredible journey you’ve shared with your guide and fellow travelers.

FAQs
Is this a 'serious' retreat?
Absolutely not! This is far from a standard yoga retreat. Don't expect to follow a rigid and strict activity schedule or a restrictive detoxing diet. This adventure was designed for people who practice and love yoga, or who are just curious about it and want to experience the amazing benefits it brings for the first time. But it’s also fun, with plenty of opportunities to explore the surrounding nature trails on foot, and enjoy delicious food and wine, all in the company of like-minded people. Relaxing and not taking yourself too seriously is kind of mandatory here!
What type of yoga is included?
Throughout the trip, you’ll enjoy five yoga classes led by a certified and experienced instructor. The sessions will take place in a spacious indoor room within the hotel, featuring high ceilings and natural light. Depending on your daily itinerary, the classes will be a mix of morning or evening sessions. The primary focus will be on Vinyasa yoga, a dynamic practice that synchronizes movement with breath to create a smooth flow between poses. Special attention will be given to alignment, helping you achieve balance and efficiency while tailoring the practice to your individual needs and even total beginners. There will be also some Hatha yoga included, offering a slower, more focused practice centered around holding postures, breath control, and cultivating inner stillness. This provides a complement to the more energetic Vinyasa sessions, fostering stability, mindfulness, and deeper concentration.
What should I do about drinking water?
The tap water in Madeira is safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottle to fill up at the hotels, public fountains, and at restaurants to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.
Can my dietary requirements be accommodated on this adventure?
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip, depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully before your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
BACKGROUND
Madeiran and Portuguese cuisine is rooted in simple, hearty cooking shaped by the Atlantic climate and centuries of rural traditions. Meals often center around grilled meats, fresh fish and seafood, vegetables, soups, and bread, with olive oil, garlic, and herbs used generously. In Madeira, dishes such as vegetable soups, stews, grilled fish, salads, and side dishes are common, and meals are typically straightforward and filling rather than heavily processed.
While Portugal is not traditionally as plant-based as some Mediterranean countries, vegetarian and lactose-free diets are increasingly well understood. Vegan and gluten-free options are available but can be more limited and at times repetitive, particularly in smaller or more traditional restaurants. Your guide will help communicate your requirements, but it’s important to be flexible and prepared, especially in more rural or remote areas of the island.
Having said all this, the lodging base where you stay for the entire trip is well used to international travelers and therefore well versed in provision for special dietary requirements, so any meals there will generally not be an issue for those with dietary requirements.
SPECIAL DIETS
Vegetarian
-Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. While many traditional Portuguese dishes include meat or fish, vegetarian options are available and may include vegetable soups, salads, omelets, rice and bean dishes, grilled vegetables, cheese, bread, and side dishes prepared with olive oil and herbs. Restaurants are generally happy to adapt dishes where possible however, please note that vegetarian diets are not common in rural Madeira, so meal options in certain locations can be basic, repetitive, and lacking in protein. Packed lunches are carefully prepared under the guidance of your local host, so are always of good quality and variety.
Vegan
-Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. Options may include vegetable soups (without meat stock), salads, rice, grilled or sautéed vegetables, potatoes, sweet potatoes, and dishes prepared with olive oil, garlic, and herbs. However, vegan-specific options are much more limited than vegetarian ones, particularly in traditional eateries, so flexibility is important and you should be aware that meal options can be basic, repetitive, and lacking in protein. Packed lunches are carefully prepared under the guidance of your local host, so are always of good quality and variety. Please do consider bringing your favorite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.
Kosher
-Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are extremely rare in Madeira and therefore a Kosher diet cannot be accommodated on this trip. Vegetarian or vegan options are often the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.
Halal
-Certified Halal meat is generally not available in Madeira. Vegetarian or vegan options are often the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.
INTOLERANCES
Gluten Free (for Celiac, please see Allergies section below)
-Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, options will be more limited than for those without dietary requirements. Portuguese cuisine frequently includes bread, pastries, and flour-based products, and awareness of cross-contamination can vary. Meals will typically rely on naturally gluten-free foods such as grilled fish or meat, vegetables, rice, potatoes, salads, and vegetables rather than specialist substitutes. Lunch boxes are however carefully prepared under the guidance of your local host, so are always of good quality and variety. Gluten-free specialist products are generally limited outside major supermarkets, so please do consider bringing your favorite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.
Lactose Free
-Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. While dairy products such as cheese, butter, and milk are commonly used, many traditional dishes are naturally lactose-free or can be prepared without dairy. These include grilled fish or meats, vegetable soups, rice dishes, vegetables, salads, and vegetables prepared with olive oil rather than butter or cream. Lunch boxes are carefully prepared under the guidance of your local host, so are always of good quality and variety. Please do consider bringing your favorite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.
ALLERGIES
Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life-threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our CX team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip.
This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

Can I store my excess luggage somewhere?
You can leave any excess luggage at the hotel for the duration of the adventure.
What happens in case of bad weather?
The weather in the mountains can be quite unpredictable, with rain and cold temperatures possible at any time of the year—especially at higher altitudes (above 4,900 ft). The best you can do is to be prepared for anything and come equipped with layers of clothing, sunscreen, and waterproofs.
Your host will be monitoring the weather conditions during the course of the trip and will suggest alternative, safer hiking routes should the weather get particularly bad.

Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Who is running the trip?
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
What is the official travel advice?
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).
If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.
For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

What's the weather like?
Madeira enjoys a subtropical climate with hot summers and mild winters, usually with sunshine throughout most of the year, giving it the nickname 'the island of the eternal spring'. While the south of the island and coastal areas are usually sunnier, colder temperatures, fog, or low clouds can be expected in the interior of the island and at higher altitudes, so it's important to come equipped for all weather conditions year-round (see our gear list for more info).
In the winter months (between December and March), temperatures hover just under 68°F, still mild enough to swim in the sea or a heated outdoor pool, though there's a slightly higher possibility of rain or cloudy conditions, especially in the north of the island.
The weather in the mountains can be pretty unpredictable, with rain and cold temperatures a possibility at any time of the year – especially at higher altitudes (above 4,900 ft). The best you can do is to be prepared for anything and come equipped with layers of clothing, sunscreen and waterproofs.
Your host will be monitoring the weather conditions during the course of the trip and will suggest alternative, safer hiking routes should the weather get particularly bad.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 134kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
