Good, but maybe not in October

Our guide Nedih was super knowledgeable, the guest houses were cosy and the views were stunning. However, I wouldn't recommend booking in October. We couldn't follow the planned itinerary due to bad weather, including rain, hail and knee deep snow. I'm sure it would be a great trip in summer.

Amazing trip and not what was expected!

We had an incredible guide Nic who was both brilliant at taking us about the mountains and so knowledgable about everything Albania and it's history. We learnt so much while getting our heart rate up! He was a lot of fun too. The best thing was the adaptability - while it was supposed to be 'wild swimming' we had unseasonable snow conditions the last too days and had to abandon the hike as planned. Still Nic took us up a peak nearby out guesthouse in the snow safely which was quite the experience. We then adjusted our route the last day to avoid the snow - I was amazed at his ability to take us on lots of different routes as and when needed. The holiday was great, guesthouses fantastic (cosy, warm, log fires, good food and lots of it, and great staff) and hiking incredible with beautiful scenery even with the snow. Can't recommend enough.

Despite unseasonal cloud and snow, this was a great trip. The mountains are beautiful and the itinerary well thought through. Our guide, Nick, always worked to provided a a great experience, despite what the weather gods threw at us. It was also appreciated how he shared his connection to Albania with us.

Amazing guide and a wonderful trip

I would definitely recommend this trip to anyone considering booking. Our guide Kreshnik was so knowledgeable about both the geography and history of the area, and we loved hearing his stories and opinions throughout the trip. Although the weather wasn't as great as we'd hoped so there wasn't as much opportunity for the wild swimming aspect of the trip as we'd have liked, the hiking was fantastic. We had some spectacular views (and some cloudy ones!) which made the hiking effort worthwhile. Kreshnik also did very well to adapt the plans during and after some heavy snowfall, keeping everyone happy and motivated. All our hosts at the lodges were very welcoming and amenable, with all accommodation being clean and comfortable.

Great trip!

A wonderful week exploring North Albania! Great choice of hikes across various terrain - while we didn't have the perfect weather, each day was really enjoyable and different! Our guide Kreshnik was great and adapted to the unexpected snow, providing alternative routes to explore! The guest houses were cosy and the food was comforting after a long day on the hills! Will definitely be back to explore more of Albania and catch some of the views we missed.

Initially our guide appeared tired

Initially our guide appeared tired & not very communicative. However after a day he appeared more enthusiastic & communicative. I liked him as he was patient, informative and very competent. I felt considered & safe. Sadly we were unable to follow the itinerary due to adverse weather conditions which of course was beyond our guides control

MBA initial trip to Accursed Mountans, Albania

The trip was well planned but the programme had to be abandoned due to heavy snow and gale force winds.

Rebecca S.(October 2025)
The holiday was very well

The holiday was very well organised and made everything so simple and relaxed having everything included. I enjoyed staying in the guest houses and their lovely roaring fires and home cooking.

We were thwarted by the weather which meant we couldn't do everything that had been planned but our guide was excellent at assessing the situation, safety issues and making alternative arrangements.

I understand that this is a new trip and I think it's an excellent addition to MBA's offer. The trails were excellent and would like to do it again at some point when the weather was better so I could see all the views we were unable to see this time.

    Show Day 1 detail

Your adventure kicks off at Tirana Airport, where you’ll hop on a bus and head north to Shkodër, the vibrant gateway to northern Albania. The drive takes you through the coastal basin, passing farmland, small towns, and rivers. Upon arrival, you’ll head straight to the lakeside village of Shirokë, where you can cool off with a swim in the warm lake waters or grab a light snack if you’re feeling hungry. Then it’s on to Shkodër, a city with over 2,500 years of history, nestled between two rivers, the largest lake in the Balkans, and the foothills of the Albanian Alps. As the day winds down, the city comes alive with the “xhiro,” an evening stroll through the pedestrian zone lined with cafés and bars. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious traditional Albanian dinner before settling in for the night. Please note that Shkodër is your last chance to pick up any last-minute supplies or store extra luggage before your trek officially begins tomorrow!

Leave the morning buzz of Shkodër behind as you drive through semi-rural villages along the shores of the largest lake in the Balkans, heading north toward the Montenegrin border. From there, the road winds through deep-cut valleys into the Albanian Alps. Upon arriving in Theth, your luggage will be loaded onto horses (soft bags only), and you’ll set off on one of the most scenic hikes in the Accursed Mountains, crossing from Theth to Valbona and passing from one national park to another. This trail is popular for good reason, so expect to meet other hikers along the way. From tomorrow, you’ll venture onto far wilder, rarely traveled paths. The hike begins through a shaded beech forest before gradually ascending to the famed Valbona Pass (5,941 ft), where breathtaking 360° views of rugged peaks and deep valleys await. From here, the descent winds through picturesque meadows and steep, zigzagging paths, revealing untouched landscapes stretching as far as the eye can see. Reaching Valbona, you’ll hop into local transport for an adventurous ride through the dry riverbed to your accommodation, a simple but cozy, family-run guesthouse. Settle in, soak up the mountain views, and enjoy a well-earned home-cooked meal. That’s your first big hike complete!

After breakfast, your luggage is once again loaded onto horses, and you set off on foot straight from your accommodation. The trail leads into a glacial valley, carved by ancient ice flows descending from Mount Jezerca - the highest peak in the Accursed Mountains at 8,835 ft. As you gain altitude, breathtaking views of the towering peaks unfold, while in spring, carpets of wildflowers paint the landscape in ever-changing colors. At 5,413 ft, you’ll reach a former military hut, now used by shepherds. Until the early ’90s, this was a heavily restricted border zone, where any attempt to flee Albania was punishable by death. Today, only weathered border stones and stories shared by your guide serve as reminders of its dark past. Soon, you’ll arrive at a high mountain pass on the Montenegro border. Most hikers turn back here, but not you. Instead, you’ll cross the green border and continue into Montenegro. Weather and schedule permitting, your guide will lead you on an adventurous, partly trailless detour to a stunning glacial lake at the foot of Mount Jezerca, where the bravest can dare a dip in its ice-cold waters. If, for any reason, you skip this lake, there’s an alternative stop at a karst spring further down the valley. Finally, 4x4 vehicles await for a bumpy ride down the remote Ropojana Valley to the village of Vusanje. Tonight, you’ll settle into wooden bungalows, your family-run base for another night in the wild.

After breakfast, hop on a short ride from Vusanje to the small town of Gusinje, where a mosque, a Catholic church, and an Orthodox church stand close together, reflecting the diverse ethnic and religious mix of this Balkan border triangle between Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro. Soon, you’ll arrive at the breathtaking Grebaja Valley in Prokletije National Park, where sheer limestone peaks rise dramatically from the valley floor. While these jagged karst towers are reserved for climbers, you’ll set off on a stunning hike through beech forests, following one of the Balkans’ most spectacular ridge walks. The trail crosses a series of mini peaks, each offering an even more impressive view than the last. Eventually, you’ll reach Mount Taljanka (6,749 ft), which marks the border with Albania and rewards you with a jaw-dropping 360° panorama over the remote Kelmend region - truly a postcard-perfect view! After a well-earned picnic break, descend, crossing the green border back into Albania. Passing the ruins of an old military barracks, you’ll continue through dense forest before arriving on foot in the village of Lëpushë. This is the highest settlement in Kelmend and your base for the next two nights. Tonight, you’ll settle into a cozy guesthouse with three bedrooms and shared bathrooms - your home in the heart of the Albanian Alps.

Today’s more easy-going hike takes you through some of Albania’s northernmost landscapes. Setting off from your guesthouse in Lëpushë, you’ll ascend towards the Bordoleci Pass (4,420 ft), the highest point of the road through the Kelmend Valley. From here, follow the ridgeline with sweeping views behind you as you make your way towards Mount Greben (6,037 ft). Its flat summit offers beautiful panoramas across the borderlands with Montenegro. Descending from the peak, you’ll reach a summer meadow where local families move during the school holidays - especially during the blueberry season from August onwards. If they’re around, you’ll have the chance to stop and learn more about their traditional pastoral lifestyle, a way of life that’s slowly disappearing. The path then leads down to Vermosh, Albania’s northernmost settlement, where you can cool off with a well-earned swim in the river. After relaxing by the water, a short transfer takes you back to your guesthouse in Lëpushë for some well-deserved downtime and another night in the mountains.

Your final hike of the week begins with a gentle uphill climb out of the village, leading toward the shoulder of the razor-edged Mount Golishti (6,630 ft). Once a well-trodden path lined with summer meadows and frequented by mule caravans, it has grown quieter over the years as families move away and traditional mountain life fades. Without electricity or modern comforts, life up here is harsh but also a peaceful escape from the modern world - one of the reasons Kelmend was once called the “land of the living past.” While the Valbona Pass you trekked earlier in the week was a stunning introduction to the Accursed Mountains, it’s also one of the most popular hiking routes in the Balkans. Today, by contrast, you’ll follow rarely visited trails far from the crowds, enjoying the solitude of the mountains. Reaching the village of Nikc, you can stop for a well-earned drink before hopping into the minibus for a scenic drive down through the canyon toward Tamara, with a chance for a final swim in some inviting natural pools before heading back to Shkodër. Back in the city, you’ll return to the buzz of urban life and the comforts of civilization. Tonight, raise a glass to an unforgettable journey across two countries, three national parks, and countless wild valleys - that’s your trek completed!

FAQs

Although Albania has only emerged as a top trekking destination in the last decade, the number of visitors to the Accursed Mountains is rising rapidly each year. While this growth has brought significant economic benefits to remote mountain communities, some areas have struggled with overdevelopment, congestion, and crowded trails. Many tour operators stick to the well-trodden Peaks of the Balkans route, often including multiple out-and-back hikes from Valbona and Theth. Instead, we’ve partnered with a trusted local host in Albania who is committed to sustainable tourism. We are proud to offer an itinerary that goes beyond the usual hotspots, crossing from valley to valley and even over the green border into Montenegro. This hybrid approach allows you to experience the highlights early in the trip before venturing into more remote, lesser-visited regions. By staying off the busiest trails, you’ll enjoy a more peaceful trekking experience while also supporting communities beyond Valbona and Theth, ensuring your visit has a broader and more positive impact.

During the trek you'll be trekking across the borders of Albania and Montenegro. Your host will collect a copy of your passport ahead of the trip and will apply for permits on your behalf, so there is no paperwork or applications for you to worry about.

No. You'll need to have a soft duffle bag or backpack (max. 33 lbs) suitable for all your belongings, which will be transported for you by horses or mules and sometimes a jeep, and then a small daypack (30-40 liters) to carry personal items during the day.

Since the trip starts and ends in Shkoder, you can easily store any excess luggage and items you don't need during the trek at the hotel, ready for your return on Day 7. If you need more info, just check with your host.

The tap water in the mountains is generally safe to drink. Please bring along your own reusable water bottle to fill up at the hotels and guesthouses to avoid buying single-use plastic bottles.

In adverse weather conditions, it may not be safe to ascend the most exposed paths. Your guide will monitor weather conditions and act accordingly. In the event of unusually high amounts of snow in June, you will not use crampons or ice picks on this non-technical trip and may divert routes instead. Your host will be in touch prior to departure and will let you know if any extreme weather is forecast. There are contingency plans for parts of the itinerary that are most likely to be impacted if there is unseasonable adverse weather.

There will be one lead guide for groups of up to 12 people.

At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.

Once you have booked on your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.

BACKGROUND

Albanian mountain cuisine has improved a lot in recent years, but it’s still shaped by a long tradition of simple, resourceful cooking in a rugged landscape where communities historically grew only what the mountains allowed. As a result, meals remain hearty, rustic, and limited in variety, relying on local, seasonal ingredients and the roots of ‘cucina povera’. Rural guesthouses, restaurants, and hospitality providers that mainly serve a domestic audience are often unfamiliar with dietary restrictions and preferences, and special diets are not always well understood. While the food is wholesome and filling, travelers with specific dietary requirements should not expect a wide culinary range. It is also worth noting that fresh fruit can be hard to come by in the high alpine areas - this is because as soon as it ripens, it’s often snapped up to make raki, Albania’s homemade firewater.

SPECIAL DIETS

Vegetarian Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, you should be aware that traditional Albanian dishes can be meat-centered, and vegetarian diets are not common in certain areas that this trip visits. Having said this, there are several traditional dishes that are vegetarian by default with meat usually served as a separate side dish. Vegetarian dishes are considered shared dishes and are generally served to the entire group. Vegetarians are often served the same meals as everyone else, minus the meat or fish.

Vegan Vegan diets are very difficult to cater for on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination, and you may find the food provided repetitive. Traditional Albanian dishes are meat-centered, and vegan diets are not common in certain areas that this trip visits. While it is possible to follow a Vegan diet on this trip, you need to be aware that options are very limited, lack protein, and can be quite repetitive. Without dairy and eggs, breakfast and picnic lunches are limited to bread and raw vegetables. Dinners are satisfactory in the majority of places, but the lodging hosts may require your input/guidance. Please bring calorie-dense and protein-rich supplements from home - snacks and items such as peanut butter etc - to supplement the meals and ensure you have enough fuel for the adventure.

Kosher Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and usually cannot be guaranteed. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

Halal Certified Halal supply varies by destination and cannot be guaranteed on this trip. Vegetarian or vegan options can often be the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.

INTOLERANCES

Gluten Free (for Celiac, please see Allergies section below) Gluten-free diets are difficult to cater for on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination, and you may find the food provided repetitive. At breakfast and for picnic lunches, fried doughs (such as petulla, pancakes) and bread are the staple foods. Gluten-free alternatives beyond the occasional dense and dry corn/maize bread are virtually unknown/unavailable so please do bring plenty of your favorite snacks or food supplements from home to ensure that you always have enough fuel for your adventure.

Lactose Free Lactose-free diets are difficult to cater for on this trip. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that alternative products are not available in this destination, and you may find the picnics provided somewhat limited. As cheese is a staple at breakfast and lunch, we recommend bringing your favorite snacks or supplements from home. Please also see the notes text on the vegan diet above.

ALLERGIES

Our host has confirmed that provision for certain mild and severe or life-threatening food allergies on this trip may be unreliable. Please get in touch with our CX team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.

Departures run throughout the summer season (June–September) and into early October. Summer weather in this part of the Balkans is typically dry, clear, and warm during the day, with cooler temperatures at night or at higher altitudes. Occasional rainfall is possible, and until the end of June, you may even encounter some lingering snow above 5,900 ft, especially on north-facing slopes. Your guides will monitor conditions, stay prepared, and keep you informed before each day's trek.

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 169kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
