Detailed Logistics

Transfers

On Day 1, a group transfer will be provided from Lisbon Airport to Setubal. The transfer is typically scheduled for the early afternoon (around 2:00 PM) but will depend on the group's arrival times. Once the majority of the group has arrived, you'll depart together to your hotel in Setubal.

For those arriving early, or if your flight does not align with the scheduled transfer, getting to Setubal from Lisbon Airport is straightforward and can be arranged independently. A train service connects Lisbon to Setubal in just 50 minutes (departing from the Roma-Areeiro station) which runs regularly, costing approximately €5. Once you arrive at the station in Setubal, it's just a short taxi ride or a 15-minute walk to the hotel. Alternatively, a taxi or Uber can take you directly from the airport to Setubal. The cost will vary depending on traffic, but expect to pay around €30.

On Day 7 there will be a group transfer provided to Faro Airport (or Faro train station) leaving at around 10:00 AM, subject to the group's various departure flight times.

If you are arriving before Day 1 or departing after Day 7, your host can arrange private airport transfers for an extra cost – see Optional Extras for details.

Travel options

There are regular direct flights to Portugal from major airports across the UK and Europe, as well as from New York and Toronto.

Trip level explained

Level 3

Moderate

This trip is designed for experienced cyclists who enjoy a bit of adventure. You should be comfortable cycling distances of 30 miles or more each day. The route features a variety of terrains, including gravel paths, sandy coastal trails, and quiet country lanes. Expect rolling, undulating terrain with some longer ascents and descents, as well as occasional short stretches on busier roads as you approach towns.

Safety: Check out our Cycling safety guidance (opens in new tab) and how to choose the right level of cycling trip (opens in new tab) article for further guidance.

Some departures of this adventure are run with e-bikes only; see the Dates & Prices section if you'd like to join an e-bike departure.

If I'm joining an e-bike departure, do I need to have experience riding an e-bike?
E-bikes are designed to be user-friendly and accessible for all skill levels. That said, having some off-road experience and basic bike-handling skills is important, as e-bikes tend to be heavier than regular bikes. It's also helpful to be comfortable riding a variety of trails, including downhill sections, along with managing your balance, and making sharp turns, as this will make your experience more enjoyable.

Style of riding: mixed terrain
This trip offers a varied riding experience across both paved and unpaved surfaces on a mountain bike. You'll mostly ride on quiet roads that are largely smooth with the occasional pothole, crack, or rough patch. You'll also follow some wide gravel tracks and hard-packed dirt paths that can be bumpy or uneven in places. While the terrain is diverse, it remains non-technical throughout — no singletrack or advanced bike handling skills are required.

Terrain breakdown
66% paved (tarmac or cobblestones)
34% unpaved (hard-packed gravel paths, with some sandy parts)

Want to sharpen your off-road skills – including handling climbs, descents and loose terrain? Check out our weekend adventure Intro to Off-Road Riding (opens in new tab), in the beautiful Chiltern Hills.

What if i need to skip an activity?

A support vehicle accompanies the group daily to transport luggage and assist with any bike-related issues. If needed, arrangements can be made for a group member to hop in for a section if you’re struggling with the terrain or become unwell. However, it should not be used simply to skip a day's ride.

What will I need to carry?

All your accommodations are pre-booked, and your luggage is transferred from one point to the next by vehicle. As everything will be transported by the support vehicle (which there will be access to throughout the day) you can bike completely unburdened, if you wish to. A handlebar bag is provided for carrying essential items like money, phone, sunscreen, and a snack. The van also carries tools and spare bike parts if needed.

I wouldn’t hesitate to do this again. The organization of routes, meals, transport of personal items and accommodation was superb. The leaders were highly competent and obviously cared very much about what they did. They were really concerned for our safety, well-being and enjoyment. The scenery that the routes went through was so varied and beautiful. We enjoyed stunning coastlines, peaceful grassland, and small villages. Shout out to Ricardo and Vitor from A2Z for a wonderful and memorable trip!

Wonderful tour led by Ricardo and supported by Vitor of A2Z adventures. This is a new tour to MBA but benefits from the many years of local experience of the A2Z team. The route was stunning, taking us to both coastal and inland hills and valleys. It was also carefully curated to give us lots of different terrain to ride on the hybrid bikes. I’d rate this a 3+ and recommend riders have some gravel or MTB experience so as to be comfortable right away with the terrain (though some of our group didn’t and they were comfortable soon enough!)

On our biking trips, we’ve found a local guide who has put together a perfect route and will navigate for you all the way. We also send a van that transports your overnight luggage and provide high-quality bikes and delicious snacks to keep you going. Hassle eliminated!

All you have to do is show up, pedal and take in the amazing landscape with your fellow tourers. You will bike at your own pace, with regular stops to regroup so that no-one gets left behind. These trips are not just open to spandex-clad roadies, although those are welcome too!

Have a read of our article on biking difficulty levels for further info on selecting the right level of bike adventure for you.

These bikes are equipped with a Bosch Performance CX motor (16 mph) for excellent power on climbs and descents, and a Bosch PowerTube battery for long-lasting rides. Each bike comes with a mounted LCD digital display for easy tracking of speed, distance, and battery status.

Before your trip, your host will ask for your height to ensure the correct frame size is provided. Each bike is equipped with standard flat pedals and male/standard saddles. If you prefer to use your own saddle and pedals (including SPDs), feel free to bring them, and they’ll be fitted for you.

In the event of poor weather such as heavy rain, strong winds and/or storms, it is possible that conditions may become unsafe to complete the planned rides on this trip. BACKGROUND

Portugal’s cuisine is shaped by its Atlantic coastline, mild climate, and maritime history, with centuries of trade bringing spices while fishing traditions underpin a diet rich in seafood, olive oil, and simple, seasonal produce. Meals tend to be hearty but straightforward, often centered on fish, meat stews, and bread-based dishes. Travelers with dietary requirements can usually find options, particularly in cities, though choices may be more limited in rural areas where menus are traditional. It helps to plan ahead and communicate needs clearly, but a guide can assist with translations and suitable selections.

The southwest of Portugal has a Mediterranean climate influenced by the Atlantic, ensuring mild temperatures year-round. The trip is planned for spring (March to early June) and fall (September to early December) when conditions are ideal for biking, avoiding the summer heat. In spring, temperatures range from 59-68°F, and although there may be more rain, it’s perhaps the best season for scenery, with stunning wildflowers in bloom and lush greenery. Early June and late September offer warmer days in the mid-70s°F with long, sunny hours and little rain, perfect for biking. October and November bring cooler temperatures, averaging 59°F, but with fewer crowds and plenty of clear and bright days, they still remain excellent months for biking and swimming. Occasional showers may occur, however, and the country tends to get more rainfall in the north during this time of year.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 120kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
