Itinerary
Day 1
Settle into your beautiful base in Quito
HotelTwin shareDinner includedShow Day 1 detailHide detail
After touching down at the airport in Quito, your host will meet you and transfer you to your first beautiful base: San José de Puembo, a former hacienda dating back to the 17th century. It’s just outside the city and ideally located for easy access to the airport for your onward journeys to and from the Galapagos in the days ahead. The rest of the day is yours to enjoy the gardens, the lovely pool and the hotel’s spa facilities, and to shake off any jet lag. There’ll be a group meet up at 7:00 PM where you can get to know your guides and fellow adventurers.
Day 2
Explore Quito and visit the equator
HotelTwin shareBreakfast and dinner includedShow Day 2 detailHide detail
Kick things off by exploring Quito’s Old Town, with its cobbled streets, colonial churches, and vibrant plazas. Enjoy a delicious Andean lunch at a popular spot in the city, a favorite haunt of your host, before climbing to the city’s best perch: Panecillo Hill, with some incredible sweeping views over Ecuador's capital. In the afternoon, you’ll head over to La Mitad del Mundo - the middle of the world, sitting right on the equator line that gives Ecuador its name. Stand with a foot in each of Earth’s hemispheres before heading back to your base for dinner and an early night, you’re off to the Galapagos first thing tomorrow…

Board a flight to Baltra Island in the Galapagos - it’s a breathtaking journey, soaring over the vast Pacific for a couple of hours before the islands begin to appear on the horizon. After touching down, hop on a short ferry across to Santa Cruz Island and kick off your Galapagos adventure. First stop: Los Gemelos (The Twins), a pair of dramatic volcanic sinkholes nestled in the highlands. Stretch your legs on a short hike through the surrounding forest, then continue on to El Chato Giant Tortoise Reserve to see these iconic creatures roaming freely in their natural habitat. Drop into the Charles Darwin Research Station later in the day before finishing up in Puerto Ayora, the main town on Santa Cruz Island, where your Standout Stay waterfront hideaway awaits. Blu Hotel Galapagos is a stunning waterfront lodge perched right on the edge of the ocean, a place where pelicans fly past your breakfast table and sunsets steal the show every evening. Settle in for a delicious meal in the hotel’s excellent restaurant and enjoy your first night in the Galapagos Islands.
Day 4
Cross to Isabela Island for bike rides and snorkeling

This morning, catch a scenic public boat across the Pacific to Isabela Island, the largest and one of the wildest in the archipelago. Upon arrival, hop on a bike and pedal along a coastal trail toward the Muro de las Lágrimas, the haunting 'Wall of Tears'. Built from volcanic rock by prisoners between 1946 and 1959, this 33ft high structure stands as a somber reminder of the island’s darker past. Along the way, pass by Poza de Flamingos, where you’ll spot vibrant flamingos and other wetland birds feeding in the shallows, and keep an eye out for giant tortoises ambling through the surrounding scrub. After cycling back to town, tuck into a well-earned lunch before heading out again, this time by boat, to explore Las Tintoreras, a tiny islet just offshore. This rocky outcrop is home to white-tipped reef sharks, Galapagos penguins, blue-footed boobies, and basking marine iguanas. Jump into the water for a snorkeling session in the calm, clear bay. Glide alongside sea turtles, shimmering tropical fish, and with any luck even manta rays, all thriving in this protected marine paradise. Later on, settle into your stunning beachfront base at Iguana Crossing, a boutique eco-lodge perched right on the sand, where marine iguanas laze on the path and waves roll in just beyond the deck; the perfect spot to unwind after your latest island adventures.
Day 5
Hike the twin volcanoes of Sierra Negra and Chico
Hiking5-6hrs · 10mi · 1312ft up · 1312ft downEco LodgeTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 5 detailHide detail
Lace up your boots and set off to explore one of Isabela Island’s most awe-inspiring natural wonders, Sierra Negra Volcano, home to the second-largest volcanic caldera on Earth. This is one of five volcanoes on the island and among the most active in the Galapagos, with its most recent eruption occurring in 2018. The trail winds gradually uphill through lush highland vegetation until you emerge at the vast rim of the caldera, a jaw-dropping view stretching out over a surreal volcanic landscape. From here, continue on to the Chico Volcano, a geologically fascinating area dotted with fumaroles, lava tubes, and fields of twisted rock in striking reds and blacks. Along the way, your guide will share the story of how these dramatic formations trace the birth and evolution of the islands. Soak up your final night at your eco-lodge, relax to the sound of the waves, spot penguins and pelicans from your balcony, and cool off in the infinity pool.
Day 6
Coffee, bike rides and wild sandy beaches
Cycling3-4hrs · 16mi · 1394ft up · 1394ft downBoutique HotelTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 6 detailHide detail
Hop on an early speedboat back to Santa Cruz Island and enjoy breakfast on arrival before heading inland to explore the lush highlands. Your first stop is a local organic coffee plantation, where you'll learn how beans are grown, harvested, and roasted in the Galapagos’ unique volcanic soil. Sip a fresh cup right on the farm, surrounded by the sights and sounds of nature, the perfect blend of flavor and tranquility. After lunch, saddle up for a scenic bike ride through the highlands towards Garrapatero Beach. The route winds gently downhill, and it’s not uncommon to find giant tortoises ambling across your path - just one of those only-in-the-Galapagos moments. At the end of the trail, cool off with a dip in the calm waters of Garrapatero, a peaceful white-sand beach flanked by lava rocks and mangroves. Take time to explore the area’s rich ecosystem; if you’re lucky, you might even spot flamingos feeding in a hidden coastal lagoon nearby. Return to Puerto Ayora in the late afternoon to be reunited with your epic lodging from earlier in the trip; you’re here for two nights this time, so settle in now that you know your way around the place.
Day 7
Explore a remote island and snorkel with sea turtles
Snorkelling1hrBoutique HotelTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 7 detailHide detail
Rise early for a 6:15 AM pick-up from your hotel in Puerto Ayora. After a scenic drive across Santa Cruz, you’ll reach the Itabaca Channel, where you’ll hop aboard a luxury yacht bound for one of the nearby uninhabited islands. The destination depends on permits and conditions for the day. The two-hour journey takes you past the Daphne Islands, a pair of dramatic volcanic cones rising from the sea, well known for their birdlife and diving spots. Keep your eyes peeled for frigatebirds soaring overhead and dolphins playing in the boat’s wake. Upon arrival, disembark for a short guided walk through the island’s surreal volcanic terrain. Your guide will introduce you to the island’s unique ecosystem and geological history as you explore lava fields, cactus forests, and coastal cliffs. Back on the boat, enjoy a freshly prepared lunch on deck with views of the island’s colorful volcanic coastline - the perfect recharge before the next adventure. Afterwards, dive into the clear turquoise waters for an epic snorkeling session. Glide through marine canyons alongside white-tipped reef sharks, sea turtles, and schools of vibrant fish, then follow the trail through lava cactus gardens for one last look at this remarkable place. Return by boat to the Itabaca Channel and drive back to Puerto Ayora for one last dreamy evening at Blu Galapagos.
Day 8
Goodbye Galapagos
HotelTwin shareBreakfast and dinner includedShow Day 8 detailHide detail
Wave goodbye to the islands as you board your flight back to mainland Ecuador, leaving the sea lions, marine iguanas, and giant tortoises behind (though they’ll live on in your camera roll forever). Touch down in Quito and enjoy a relaxed afternoon. You're free to head into the city to explore more of the capital’s lively markets and hidden corners, grab a final taste of Andean street food, or simply unwind in the hotel gardens with a coffee or a cold beer in hand. As the sun sets on your adventure, gather with your group for one last evening together, swapping stories from sea and shore, and passing around plenty of tortoise photos at the table.

What's not included
Our trips do not include flights, trains, or other travel to the start point and back from the end point.
There are some payments that you'll need to make locally on this trip. Much Better Adventures usually include everything to make for a hassle-free trip, however sometimes there are payments that must be made in person at borders or national parks which require cash payment along with your passport. Entry to the Galapagos is operated like this by the Ecuadorian government. Please make sure you bring along the following:
-
$200 USD in cash for the Galapagos National Park entry fee. This fee is paid by each adult visiting the Galapagos, and this payment goes towards protecting the wider national park and marine reserve. You must pay this fee on arrival at Baltra Airport while presenting your passport for immigration control. It can only be paid individually by the passport holder.
-
$10 USD in cash for a municipal tax to enter Isabela Island on Day 5. This is payable when presenting your passport upon arrival on the island.
Tips are not included in the trip cost. These are entirely at your discretion but there is an expectation to tip for good service. Your guide will help with advice, however, we suggest the below as a guideline per person:
Guides:
- $5 USD per day in the mainland
- $15 USD per day in the Galapagos Islands
Of course, you are free to tip more or less, and the amount should be reflective of your perception of service and quality - a tip is not compulsory and should only be given when you receive excellent service.
You know your own spending habits best, so please budget an appropriate amount for things like optional meals and drinks, shopping, optional activities, and laundry.
Travel insurance is compulsory for all of our adventures, and you'll need to provide your policy details before departure. Your insurance should offer adequate cover for overseas medical treatment, evacuation/repatriation, your baggage and equipment, and the specific activities involved in your adventure. We also recommend ensuring your policy includes cancellation and curtailment cover, in case you're unable to join your trip due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness.
Standard travel insurance may not cover all the activities included in your adventure, so it's essential to check the details carefully. There are adventure-specific providers that many travelers have used in the past, such as True Traveller (opens in new tab) (for those based in the UK or Europe), or Rise + Shield (opens in new tab), both of which offer cover for a wide range of adventurous activities.
Please make sure your chosen policy meets your individual needs and covers all aspects of your trip.
Visa requirements often change, and you are responsible for obtaining any required visas for this trip. Please check with your nearest embassy or consulate for up-to-date advice.

Will my Itinerary differ slightly from the one advertised?
Due to flight schedules and yacht logistics, the exact itinerary may differ slightly from the one advertised. All inclusions will remain the same. Your local host will share the finalised schedule in your pre-departure message ahead of the trip.
What should I do about drinking water?
The tap water in mainland Ecuador and the Galapagos is not always gentle on the stomach, especially for those who haven’t been in Latin America for a while. Purified water is available in each of the hotels for you to refill your bottle each morning, so be sure to pack one or two reusable water bottles.
Can I leave my excess luggage somewhere?
Yes, you can leave excess luggage in Quito at the start of the trip, to be collected when you return to Quito after your week in the Galapagos.
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Who is running the trip?
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
What is the official travel advice?
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).
If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.
For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.
Why are your adventures only for adults?
All of our group adventures are specially designed for adults to enjoy as we want these adventures to bring together outdoorsy people who are truly like-minded. You must be over 18 to join one of our trips.
Who else will be on my trip?
You're always in good company on one of our adventures.
Our trips typically consist of a mix of solo travelers and small groups of 2 or 3 friends, with most in their 30s-50s.
Our sociable adventures are solo-friendly by design and naturally attract outdoorsy people with a shared mindset; a love for adventure, a desire to push themselves, and meet awesome, like-minded people along the way.
It’s this camaraderie that has so often turned a great adventure into a life-changing one.
Don't just take our word for it:
- 95% of people rate the group dynamics on our trips 5/5
- 90% of people recommend joining a trip to make new friends
- 75% of people have met people on our trips that they would now consider friends
See here for more info about the Much Better Adventures tribe.
What's the weather like?
Seasons in the Galapagos are split into the cool, dry season (June to November) and the warm, wet season (December to May). The seas are warmer, calmer, and offer better visibility during the warm, wet season. Rain showers at this time of year tend to pass quickly and are often a welcome break from the heat and sun.
Average temperatures in the warm, wet season (December to May) range from a low of 72°F to a high of 88°F.
Average temperatures in the cool, dry season (June to November) range from a low of 66°F to a high of 81°F.
Wildlife in the Galapagos can be seen year-round, as many of the main attractions are resident species, with few migratory ones.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 554kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
