Day 1
Welcome to Albania!
Driving2hrsHotelTwin shareDinner includedShow Day 1 detailHide detail
Touch down in Tirana, where your host will meet you either at the airport or in the city center. From here, you’ll drive south through high mountains and green valleys to the ancient, fortified city of Berat. Set on the banks of the Osum River, Berat is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for its well-preserved Ottoman houses with rows of large windows that earned it the nickname ‘Town of a Thousand Windows’. Stretch your legs with a gentle wander through the cobbled streets and up to the hilltop castle nearby. This evening, tuck into a traditional Albanian meal at Castle Park Hotel - your base for the next two nights.
Day 2
Osumi Canyon
Hiking2.5hrs · 984ft upDriving3hrsHotelTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 2 detailHide detail
Leaving Berat, you’ll travel south to Osumi Canyon, where sheer cliffs, lush forests, and a milky turquoise river create a proper playground for adventure. Depending on the season and water levels (check the FAQs for details), you’ll either river hike or raft your way through the canyon, with time to explore caves and waterfalls tucked along the route. Refuel with a traditional lunch in the small town of Corovode before returning to Berat. You’ll have a bit of downtime at the hotel, then head out to visit one of the region’s best wineries. Dinner is on you tonight.
Day 3
Explore the sacred Tomorr Mountains
Hiking5hrs · 6mi · 860ft up · 1844ft downDriving3hrsGlampingTwin shareBreakfast and lunch includedShow Day 3 detailHide detail
Hop in a 4x4 and head deep into the wild Tomorr Mountains, where rugged terrain and age-old folklore still echo through the pine forests. These remote peaks are home to bears and wolves, though sightings are rare. You’ll hike through sweeping valleys, stopping in a small mountain village for lunch and soaking up views of Mount Tomori – one of Albania’s most striking summits. After a short break back in Berat, jump back into the 4x4 for a scenic off-road ride to Permet. Tonight, you’ll settle into a glamping site with wide-open views and a well-earned rest under the stars.
Day 4
Kayaking the Vjosa River
Kayaking2.5hrs · 5miDriving1.5hrsGlampingTwin shareAll meals includedShow Day 4 detailHide detail
Set off to Kelcyre Gorge for a kayak along the Vjosa - Europe’s last wild river. You’ll paddle a calm, scenic stretch of turquoise water before heading to the historic town of Tepelena for lunch. Perched where the Vjosa and Drino rivers meet, it’s known for its Ottoman-era castle and big mountain views. This afternoon, visit the mystical Langarica Canyon and soak in the natural thermal baths at Benja - a dreamy mix of wild landscapes and warm, mineral-rich pools. Back at your glamping site, take in the mountain views and toast to another cracking day.
Day 5
Rafting the Vjosa River

Hit the Vjosa again today - this time by raft, setting off from the village of Kaludh. Depending on the season (see the FAQ below for more details), you’ll take on Class II–III rapids as you paddle through Albania’s first wild river national park, surrounded by untouched mountain scenery. After finishing up in Leshnice, stop for lunch before heading to Leusa - a hilltop village steeped in history. A peaceful hike winds up to the 18th-century church of Leusa, tucked among ancient olive trees. Back at camp, gather for a farewell dinner and your final night under the stars.

FAQs
Will we go rafting or do a river hike when at Osumi Canyon?
For departures from November to June, you'll generally go rafting within the canyon, as the typically higher water levels at this time of year create a safe environment for rafting. For departures between July and October, when there has been less rainfall, you'll go river hiking. This involves hiking along the riverbed within the canyon and jumping into pools along the way.
In summary, the season and water levels determine the activity: rafting in the wetter months, river hiking in the drier months – so you’ll enjoy the canyon at its best, whatever the time of year.
Please note that these months are intended as a general guide and may vary depending on weather conditions and rainfall.
How does the rafting experience vary by season?
Water levels on the Vjosa River change throughout the year, affecting both the duration of the activity and the grade of rapids, due to the speed and volume of water flowing. In general, the more rainfall there has been, the higher the grade of the rapids.
Seasonal overview: Spring (March–May): Shorter rafting (1–1.5 hrs) with more challenging rapids (Class III–IV). Summer (June–September): Longer rafting (around 2.5 hrs) with gentler rapids (Class II–III). Autumn (October): Dependent on rainfall – usually moderate rapids (Class III–III½). Winter (November–February): Shorter rafting (1–1.5 hrs) with more challenging rapids (Class III–IV).
Please note that these months are intended as a general guide and may vary depending on weather conditions and rainfall. Whatever time you travel, your host will ensure your day is full and that you have plenty of time to explore and enjoy the outdoors.
How does the kayaking experience vary by season?
Kayaking takes place in the beautiful Këlcyrë Gorge, which is ideal for paddling year-round. Water levels change with the seasons, so the pace and length of the experience can vary: higher water usually means a faster, shorter journey, while lower water allows for a slower, more leisurely one.
Seasonal overview: Spring (March–May): Faster-moving water and a lively paddling experience. Summer (June–September): Calmer flows, with longer time on the water. Autumn (October): Variable conditions depending on recent rainfall. Winter (November–February): Cooler weather and a brisker pace on the river.
Please note that these months are intended as a general guide and may vary depending on weather conditions and rainfall. Whatever the season, your hosts will ensure you enjoy a full day out, with plenty of time to explore and enjoy the outdoors.
Can my dietary requirements be accommodated on this adventure?
At Much Better Adventures, we work hard to accommodate dietary requirements and allergies so your trip is safe, inclusive, and enjoyable. That said, options can vary by country, location, and lodging, and in some places, options may be limited or unavailable. The information below has been provided by your host so you’re fully informed about what will be possible on your trip depending on your individual requirements. This information should be read carefully prior to your trip to ensure that you are adequately prepared for the situation ‘on the ground’.
Once you have booked your trip, please fill out your passenger information form asap with any dietary requirements. Once you complete your passenger information, your dietary needs and any allergies are automatically shared with your host and, in turn, your guide. Please submit this as early as possible so they can plan accordingly and deliver the best experience. Please also remind your guide about your dietary requirements upon arrival, as mentioning these in person allows your guide to comprehend individual preferences and limitations as soon as you arrive.
BACKGROUND
Albanian cuisine is shaped by a long tradition of simple, resourceful cooking in a rugged landscape where communities historically grew only what the mountains allowed. As a result, meals remain hearty, rustic, and limited in variety, relying on local, seasonal ingredients and the roots of ‘cucina povera’. Rural guesthouses, restaurants, and hospitality providers that mainly serve a domestic audience are often unfamiliar with dietary restrictions and preferences, and special diets are not always well understood. While the food is wholesome and filling, travelers with specific dietary requirements should not expect a wide culinary range. Having said this, in Berat and Permet, you will be well looked after as your host provides the meals and has a broad and good understanding of various dietary requirements.
SPECIAL DIETS
Vegetarian -Vegetarian diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, you should be aware that traditional Albanian dishes can be very meat-heavy, and vegetarian diets are not common in certain areas that this trip visits. Having said this, there are several traditional dishes that are vegetarian by default with meat usually served as a separate side dish. Vegetarian dishes are considered shared dishes and are generally served to the entire group. Vegetarians are often served the same meals as everyone else, minus the meat or fish.
Vegan -Vegan diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. While your host will do their best to meet these requirements, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination, and you may find the food provided repetitive. Traditional Albanian dishes are very meat-heavy, and vegan diets are not common in certain areas that this trip visits. Please bring snacks and protein-rich supplements from home to supplement the meals and ensure you have enough fuel for the adventure.
Kosher -Fully certified Kosher kitchens and supervision are rare and cannot be guaranteed unless expressly confirmed in advance by your host. Vegetarian or vegan options are the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.
Halal -Certified Halal supply varies by location and may not always be possible. Vegetarian or vegan options are the most reliable alternative if this is acceptable to you. Please read the related sections above.
INTOLERANCES
Lactose Free -Lactose-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination. Please also see the text on the vegan diet above.
Gluten Free (for Celiac, please see Allergies section below) -Gluten-free diets can be catered for on this trip, provided that your host is made aware in advance. However, please be aware that the required produce and ingredients are not abundant in this destination. Gluten-free alternatives beyond the occasional dense and dry corn/maize bread are virtually unknown/unavailable and supplements from home are recommended.
ALLERGIES Our host has confirmed that they are able to accommodate mild allergies to the 14 allergens identified by the UK Food Standards Agency, where these are disclosed in advance. However, if you have a severe or life-threatening food allergy, please get in touch with our CX team prior to booking to discuss whether your requirements can be accommodated safely on this trip. This will allow us to carefully consider the sensitivity and severity of your allergy, the available provision on the trip, and the accessibility of medical care should a reaction occur. Your safety is always our top priority. Please note that when traveling overseas, local ingredients, food preparation methods, and labeling standards may vary, particularly in remote areas. It is also worth noting that any allergies may result in more limited options and repetitive provision in some areas. While your guide will help communicate dietary requirements where possible, customers remain responsible for managing their own allergies during the trip.
Can I book on my own?
Sure can! Over 70% of our travellers travel solo, it’s a great way to meet like-minded people.
Who is running the trip?
Our team of Adventure Hunters co-create exclusive adventures which are run by highly vetted, specialist hosts. The trip is run by our trusted host partner in the destination. We only work with independent, local, in-destination experts who know the very best places to explore and how to stay safe. Read more information about the local teams we partner with. You’ll be introduced to the host straight after making a booking via the Much Better Adventures platform.
What is the official travel advice?
Much Better Adventures refer to the UK Government’s official travel advice when designing trips and monitoring trip operations. We recommend that all customers review the practical information available on the UK Government’s FCDO website, where you can find up-to-date advice by searching for your destination(s).
If you are based in the United States, you can also check the latest travel advisories from the U.S. Department of State.
For customers joining from other international locations, we recommend checking the official travel advice issued by your country of residence, as guidance may vary.
What vaccinations do I need?
We recommend checking out the country-specific information and also talking to a travel nurse.
How are the trips priced?
We automatically convert prices from the local currency that a host receives to your chosen currency. We update our exchange rates daily, so prices displayed on the site are subject to currency fluctuations, which is why you may see them change over time.
If you wish to change the currency you pay in, head to the bottom of the page.

What's the weather like?
The best months for hiking in Albania are February to June, and September to November, when the weather is warm and sunny, reaching temperatures of around 86ºF. July and August can be hotter; however, this is usually broken up by cool coastal breezes.
What's the carbon footprint for this trip?
We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.
What's the number?
It works out on average at 135kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.
The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.
But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:
- Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
- A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
- 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.
What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.
Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.
