Wander the winding streets of ancient, walled kasbahs and through the pathways of dramatic deep gorges

Spend a night at a traditional Berber camp and sleep under the huge desert sky spotting shooting stars

Experience the best of Moroccan culture and nature as you soak up vast landscapes, sleep in riads and learn about ancient traditions

Key Information

Day 1

Welcome to Marrakech

Driving

15 mins

Your host will meet you at the airport and take you to your traditional riad accommodation in Marrakech’s historic medina. You'll then get the chance to spend the day exploring the city’s colorful souks, wander the UNESCO-listed main square and indulge in some amazing Moroccan food.

Day 2

From Marrakech to Ait Ben Haddou

Driving

4-5hrs · 190km

You will be picked up in a modern 4x4 or minibus before setting off on a journey that will take you up and over the Atlas Mountains before descending to the desert on the other side. Along the way you'll stop at a high mountain pass, a 17th-century kasbah, and an oasis where you'll learn a bit about Berber folklore and grab lunch. The day ends in Ait Ben Haddou, a red clay city where films and shows like Gladiator and Game of Thrones have been filmed. Relax with dinner and sunset in this picturesque walled city.

Day 3

Draa River Valley and camel trekking in the Sahara

Driving

6-7hrs · 390km

Heading to the scenic Draa River Valley today you'll check out the area’s numerous kasbahs and oases. Calm water backed by the snowy Atlas Mountains makes this valley particularly beautiful. Later in the day you will arrive in Merzouga to meet your camels and gear up for an epic night in the Sahara Desert. The 1.5-hour sunset camel trek will end at a traditional Berber camp in the dunes. Enjoy hot mint tea and fresh dinner around the fire, and sleep under the stars or in a comfortable Berber tent.

Day 4

Dades Valley and Todra Gorge

Driving

5-6hrs · 300km

After a leisurely breakfast in the camp (and an incredible sunrise if you're early enough) you’ll be picked up by your driver and taken to Todra Gorge, an impressive canyon with sheer 525 ft cliff walls. Hike around to check out the views, and when you’re done exploring continue the drive through the Dades Valley to your hotel. Known as the 'Valley a Thousand Kasbahs', this rose-red landscape is spectacular.

Day 5

Ouarzazate to Marrakech

Driving

7-8hrs · 365km

This morning’s drive will take you along the Rose Valley to Skoura Oasis, a surprisingly green village in the desert. Continue onto Ouarzazate to have lunch at a kasbah, then finish the trip with a leisurely drive back over the Atlas Mountains to Marrakech for a final night in the old town.

Day 6

Goodbye Morocco

Driving

15mins

Relax over your last Moroccan breakfast, explore the town some more if you have time, then transfer to the airport to catch your flight home.

What is the food like?

Moroccan food has a unique blend of sweet and savory flavors. Local specialties include tagine (a stew cooked in an earthenware pot), couscous, and bastillas (flaky pastries stuffed with meat and dusted with cinnamon and sugar). Food is often spiced with cumin, turmeric and ginger. For breakfast, you'll be served a selection of jellies, bread, cookies and fruit with juice, coffee and tea. The included dinners will be fresh and healthy, including dishes such as soup, classic Moroccan tagine, couscous, olives, nuts and fruit. Lunches are usually a combination of salads, vegetable dishes, lentils, beans, rice or pasta, fish, and seasonal fruit.

Vegetarians, vegans and other dietary requirements and allergies can be catered for – please just request this on your passenger info form

What is the accommodation like?

Marrakech

In Marrakech, you'll stay in a beautiful riad – a traditional Moroccan house with an interior garden or courtyard. The exact riad you stay in will be confirmed closer to the time, based on availability and group size. All are chosen for their excellent reputation, great location, lovely decor and welcoming service.

Ait Ben Haddou and Dades Valley

On Days 2 and 4 you'll sleep in small local hotels, both featuring private rooms with unique decor and private bathrooms.

Sahara Desert

You'll stay by the village of Merzouga, close to the Erg Chebbi dunes in the Sahara Desert. The Berber camp here provides permanent carpeted tents with beds – or, if you prefer, blankets so you can sleep directly under the stars.

Upgrades

For solo travellers looking for their own space, an optional private room and tent can be booked for an extra charge, see Optional Extras for the price. Please request this at the time of booking (this is subject to availability).

This trip has been rated as Easy

This is a relaxed trip that is mostly cultural exploration with a dash of activity. The camel trek, though a little uncomfortable, is easy and fun for most travelers. Any other hiking is optional and entirely up to whether you want to join or not.

The desert can get quite hot, with daytime temperatures averaging 59-104°F from March to October, and 41-68°F from November to February. Nighttime temperatures drop significantly and can even approach freezing in the winter. As much as 0.4 inches of rain can fall in any month, particularly from October to January, but generally the desert is dry.

In the summer (June, July, August), daytime temperatures have been known to approach 113°F on occasions in the desert and in the towns and cities on this trip, so please ensure that you come prepared with sun protection, light and airy clothing and electrolytes/rehydration solutions if traveling at this time of year. If it becomes unsafe to camp in the desert due to extreme summer temperatures, your host will accommodate you in a nearby hotel instead.

This was my first trip with MBA, and I have to say they didn't disappoint - the trip was fantastic and I would do it all again in a heartbeat.

Marrakesh needs at least a day to explore, so I would recommend adding a day to your itinerary to make sure that you do it justice - the Medinas and Souks are a maze, easy to get lost but so interesting seeing craftsmen making shoes, jewellery, clothes etc - although everyone you engaged with wanted to sell you something!

The adventure was superb with a great variety of scenery and landscapes from the Atlas mountains, gorges, remote villages and the vastness and colour of the Sahara desert.

Our guide and driver Houssain/Hassan were very knowledgeable and accommodating to us all, stopping numerous times at scenic spots for photos and anything we wanted to explore - highlight for me was the camel journey into the camp, the site of a camel train being led by their guide across a dune in front of me at 6am was breathtaking.

There is obviously a lot of time in the minibus, the longest day was 7 hours and 375 miles and in total we covered 875 miles in the four days, but if you want to see everything that is unavoidable and well worth the time.

We’ve just finished this trip with MBA and it was epic! We got to see the real Morocco: the craziness of Marrakech, the tiny Berber villages in the mountains, the dramatic gorges and of course the amazing Sahara desert. We had a fab group of 8 who all became a little “blended family”all overseen by our guide - the delightful Hussein and his sidekick driver Hassan - love you guys! Hotels and food are great, you will become a tagine expert by the end of the trip and the night in the desert is unforgettable. Tip - take the quad bikes back, you won’t regret it. 10/10 don’t think just book!

What an incredible experience!! This trip is truly amazing, it’s a wonderful way to experience all that Morocco has to offer, from the majestic Atlas Mountains, the endless views and beautiful oasis along The Caravan Route, to the tranquil yet harsh beauty of the red sands of the Sahara, plus all the stops along the way, this is one not to miss. Our guide and driver were brilliant, making for a seamless experience, the locals we met along the way, so friendly and always wanting to help, the food was a highlight, we ate like kings at every meal, my adventure companions were a fab group. I can honestly say that this was one of the best trips I have done.

Fun, easy going, interesting and more fun! Literally had the best time, met the best people including our tour guide and driver. It’s a well planned trip and we stuck to the schedule. Accommodation was good, Food was delicious, sightseeing was unreal. Couldn’t have asked for a better 5 days. Well worth the money and would highly recommend. My mum and stepdad have also added it to their list! Thanks 🙏

This was our third MBA trip and we have loved every single one of them. A solid 10/10 again.

This trip is amazing and highlights how incredible and varied Morocco is. The itinerary is accurate and though you spend a lot of time in the minibus, we were never ever bored as the landscape changed so much and it was fascinating to watch. Houssein, our guide, was incredible. He was really knowledgable and answered the many questions we asked. He was also so caring, lovely and had a great sense of humour. We all laughed so much. Hassan the driver was amazing too - always felt safe - Moroccan roads are better than in the UK!

The group was amazing too, which we know makes all the difference. The highlights were quad biking in the Sahara and seeing the stars at 5am, and then watching the sun rise above the dunes. It was a pinch me moment.

Tips - 1. Take a head scarf/buff for the Sahara. We did the camel trek in strong winds so the head scarf made all the difference - the sand still gave our skin an exfoliation though! It was really atmospheric though and stunning. 2. Set your alarm for a few hours before sunrise to take photos of the stars when in the Berber camp - you might never be back and it’s a once in a lifetime experience! 3. We used an eSIM which was great and you get data in the Sahara which surprised us given we can’t get reliable signal in our town at home 😆. 4. We stayed for 3 extra days in Marrakesh which was incredible. Highly recommend doing that to finish the trip. We never wanted to leave!

Overall, loved every second of this trip. Incredible guides, amazing group, incredible country, delicious food (can never eat enough tagine!) and amazing riads/hotels (far better than we expected!). Would highly recommend to everyone and would rate it 11/10 if we can could. Thanks MBA for another cracker of a trip and memories that will last a lifetime!

This was my first time in Morocco, and first Much Better Adventures trip, and it didn't disappoint! We saw so much, such varied and beautiful landscapes, from the craziness of Marrakech to the peace of the countryside, blinding deserts, snow capped mountains, and everything in between. I hadn't realised how beautiful the country would be. We were really well looked after by our lovely guide Hussein, who always had a smile. There was lots of driving, handled by Hassan the driver like a pro, but we did plenty of little stops. The camel ride and desert camp was incredible! Absolutely magical experience. Also, ensuite tents! You have the option of a camel ride or quad bike back, so make sure your insurance covers both. I was really nervous before doing this trip, not really knowing what to expect or who I'd be travelling with, but zero regrets! It was fabulous, and everyone was so lovely and we all just got along really well. 100% recommend doing this.

The trip was 10 out of 10. Very well planned and executed. We got to explore a lot of Morocco and I have fallen in love with this beautiful country and its people. Very safe for tourists, delicious food and lovely clean hotels. Our tour guide and driver (Hussein & Hassan) were brilliant. Very professional & knowledgeable and a lot of fun. If you are thinking about doing this trip, do it! It’s worth it.

Intro to Morroco

A fantastic trip that served as an excellent introduction to Moroccan culture, showcasing breath-taking landscapes from snow-covered mountains to the vast rocky plains and the stunning dunes of the Sahara. The highlight was undoubtedly the camel ride in the Sahara desert, watching the sunset and sunrise from a dune, and then camping under the stars. The entire experience was very well-organized, offering excellent value for money, great fun, outstanding staff, and top-notch accommodation throughout. Special thanks to our guide Houssain, who looked after us so well and for making the trip unforgettable.

Great short trip into Atlas Mountains and Sahara

This trip is definitely worth doing - an alternative view of Morocco away from the bustle of Marrakech. There is inevitably a lot of travelling to get to the key locations, but if you accept this the time soon passes, and the sites you visit are worth the effort. It helps if you have a good group and the group we travelled with were the best I’ve been with on a group trip. The accommodation was also of a far higher quality than I was expecting. Personal highlights for me were the camel journey and desert camp (not rough camping!), and the mountain hotel (spectacular setting). There are a couple of things to improve. The bus was quite modern but very cramped - I’m 172cm tall and I had trouble getting my knees in, and with 14 people in a 14-seater bus there was no flexibility (this is where it’s great to be with a really good group). Hussein our guide was very personable, but his communication was poor - we had to ask to get basic details, such as departure times, and he gave no information about Morocco or the places we were travelling through - I came away feeling I had learned nothing about the country and this felt like a wasted opportunity. Overall, a good trip and worth doing, but it could be even better.

Mariette C.(November 2024)
Exceptional Trip

Please do not hesitate and book this trip! Our guide and driver was fantastic and the Sahara magical. Our guide made sure we reached sites when less crowded at the best times of dat! I recommend paying the bit extra to do the quad biking.

As the other reviews have said, please expect the long drives but this is necessary in order to see everything. Please read the other reviews as there were some useful tips on packing/money.

If you are gluten free, I recommend packing GF cereal for Marrakech for the breakfasts. As soon as I was with our guide, I was looked after very well and certainly did not go hungry!

This was my first much better adventure and I am really impressed, I’m looking forward to booking another. Group was incredibly varied but all amazing company. Guide and driver were a great laugh, company and help.

The trip itself was incredible, a lot of driving, as stated clearly, but very regular breaks at lovely locations and also meant I got to see a large amount of Morocco in a relatively short time. All accommodation was lovely and staff were welcoming and friendly. Highlight was definitely the Sahara portion of the trip, after a tranquil camel ride to the camp we had a lovely dinner then danced around the fire with the staff and some other guests from Algeria. Would highly recommend this trip and incredibly great value for the activities, food and guide/driver.

Best ever adventure

The trip was amazing. From meeting like minded people to exploring new culture. The guides were very friendly, knowledgable, helpful and patient. It was very easy going and enjoyable. Not much walking at all. The highlight was staying in the Sahara desert where we could enjoy music, dance and watch the night sky. Being able to see sunrise from the desert the next morning was the cherry on top. I would definitely recommend!

My Mum & I had a truly lovely time on this trip, it was our first guided tour/adventure and it was so perfect having everything organised for us (besides the flights). Our guide (Houssaine) and driver (Youssef) were fantastic. They were incredibly warm, welcoming & knowledgeable. Youssef made the driving look effortless. In addition to the provided kit list, I took; quick dry towel, neck cushion (for the long drives), swimsuit, powder shampoo & body wash (my new fav travel items!), handheld fan & earplugs. All these extra items came in handy!

I wouldn't hesitate booking with Much Better Adventures again.

So firstly, this was my first time doing this kind of tour, or travelling without family and friends, so I was initially a bit nervous.

However, once I had met the group and we got underway, I soon eased into it. The people were lovely, and Hussain was an excellent tour guide - he really looked after us and kept us on track.

As indicated on the webpage, there is a lot of driving, but when you consider the sheer variety of sites and landscapes you get to see, this is par for the course. Also rest stops were well scheduled, so I never felt trapped in the bus.

The Sahara desert was a clear highlight - something everyone should try and experience IMO. The camel trek, the camp, quad-biking - I was blown away.

In summary, for the quality of food, accommodation, landscapes and experiences, this tour was an absolute steal. Would recommend it to anyone, especially a first-timer.

A superb 5 night adventure in Morocco.

Sure, the journey from Marrakech to Merzouga's Berber desert camp is a marathon, not a sprint. But with Hussain's expert guidance and Driss at the wheel, the miles melted away punctuated by drink and lunch breaks, epic photo ops, and jaw-dropping views.

The real magic unfolded under the desert's night sky. Stargazing with a fellow adventurer, these are the memories I'll treasure forever. The transition from Marrakech's vibrant chaos to this serene wilderness was simply unforgettable. Bonus points to Hussain for getting me exclusive access to the hotel terrace in the Dades Gorge for a 3 am stargazing session, for which I will be forever grateful.

Wow, what a fantastic experience.

Wow, what a fantastic experience. Our senses were assaulted from the minute we arrived in Marrakech, with all its hustle, bustle, noise and aromas. What a contrast with the open, barren lands through which we passed on the following days as we visited the various destinations on the tour. I couldn't pick out a highlight, it was all fantastic, from the historic sightseeing, the sunsets, the camel and quad bike rides, the film studios, the food.... I could go on, but it's always so much better to experience these things for yourself 😎 Thank you.

What a fantastic break. It was a compact introduction to Morocco with a great guide in Hussain. The group was friendly which helped, the accomodation was good, activities were well thought out. All in all a great experience. In response to people’s comments re driving, there is a lot but that’s how you get to see the country and there are breaks at various locations along the way eg the fossil factory, walk along the gorge. Highlights were definitely the sunrise at the Berber camp and walking through Ait Ben Haddou. Thanks all for making it a great experience.

I had a great experience! The group was diverse in age group, with likeminded people. Trip went just like it was planned and our guide Hussain was knowledgeable with local history, is a great person to talk throughout our journey! Hotel/Raid accommodations were fine in the Marrakesh , whilst others were much better and vibrant with local vibe. The food was great! The pace of the trip was just like needed and short breaks, though we have to accept it’s long way on the roads!

Solid trip. The Riad on arrival day was a bit disorganized (had a notably better experience at a different Riad on another trip), and the drives were long (though it was nice to watch the world go by, and it was a comfortable ride), but the Sahara Desert is a stunning place and worth it. The stops along the way were a bit touristy, which I suppose is to be expected (and I was, after all, one of them).

We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre program, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity.

What's the number?
It works out on average at 296kg of CO2 emissions per person, including all local transport, accommodation, food, activities, guides, staff and office operations.

The only thing it doesn’t include right now is flights and travel to the destination. We do make an overall estimate across all our customers separately, but as we don’t book flights, have customers from all corners of the world, and no way of reliably knowing their travel plans, we simply can’t include an individual number in the figure on display here. We’ve got a goal to fix that, so that when you book, there is a way to measure and mitigate the carbon emitted by your flight too.

But what does the number mean?
Yep, hard to picture eh? To give you an idea:

  • Driving 1000 miles/1609km would be approximately 281kg of CO2 in an average car (or 140.5kg per person, if there were two of you in it).
  • A return economy class flight between London and New York would be approximately 1619kg (1.66 tonnes) per person.
  • 10 trees in a temperate forest are estimated to remove approximately 250kg of CO2 from the air in a period of 5-10 years.

What are we doing about it?
Our trips are relatively low-carbon by design, and we're working with all our hosts to develop long term carbon reduction plans. We partner with the World Land Trust to ensure this trip achieves Net-Zero emissions. We also support their Buy an Acre programme, helping local communities to buy and protect natural habitats in perpetuity, ensuring the protection of the reserve and its wildlife.

Want to know more?
Amazingly, no international travel company has ever publicly published their carbon measurements before, as far as we know. We believe that must change, quickly. So we’re openly sharing the method we used in the hope that other companies will be able to more easily follow suit and build on what we've done so far. You'll find it all here.

Sure can. If you would like to leave anything in Marrakech, your host will take care of this for you.

Ramadan is expected to take place from February 17 to March 19, 2026. The national holiday of Eid ul-Fitr will follow for 2-3 days. Ramadan is an Islamic festival where the religious do not eat or drink during daylight hours. While this is a really interesting time to travel, especially to witness celebrations where the fast is broken in the evenings, you can expect some business hours will be shortened, alcohol is not permitted during daylight hours, and some restaurants will be closed during this festival period. Activities for local people tend to be limited during the day, and the nights are very active in cities with lots of different foods being sold and consumed. Ramadan will not affect the inclusions on your trip, although you should be aware that dinners will be served after locals break their fast in the evenings.

This trip visits locations where daytime temperatures can be extremely high during the times of year when this trip operates. High humidity and limited access to shade can also be factors, and warm temperatures can continue into the nighttime, which additionally influences the body’s ability to cool down. Personal care should be taken to keep cool as best possible in the conditions, such as wearing appropriate clothing and proper hydration. Very high temperatures can impair an individual’s physical abilities to perform an activity that they may otherwise be able to do competently at cooler temperatures. People may experience symptoms associated with dehydration and Heat Stroke. Your guide(s) are trained to mitigate the risks associated with high temperatures, by carefully managing the intensity of the activity, and to provide the appropriate support response should someone feel ill during the trip. Should you experience health issues during your trip you should inform your guide immediately so the proper care can be provided.
